A word from Pastaio
Pastaio is the Italian word for "pasta maker" which reflects our Chef's experience working as Pastaio for restaurants in New York including Eataly, where she would turn out roughly 3,000 pounds weekly. We now bring fresh handmade pasta daily to the Jersey Shore incorporating the freshest seasonal ingredients to our menu that changes each week. At Pastaio we strive to support our local produce, fish and meat, purveyors on an organic and sustainable basis.

Our Menu reflects our kitchen staff experience with classical french training and the bounty of the Garden State. We are proud to utilize Pat LaFrieda Meats of New York for our meat and poultry.

Ask about having your next event in our Private Party Room which can accommodate up to 50.

  • "We arrived for our 745 reservation. We proceeded to sit (party of 5) for 35 minutes. No menu. No water. No waiter. No wine glasses. Nothing. For 35 minutes we never saw our server. Upon an attempt to walk to the kitchen to find someone, a guest in my party was yelled at. We left immediately (not that anyone noticed). The rest of the restaurant told us is we were smart we would leave. Some were waiting in excess of 1.5 hours / 2 hours. for food."

  • "Food was awesome, but the service was terribly slow ands inattentive. As people, the staff was very nice and cordial, but there appeared to be too few waiters and waitresses for the volume of tables. The wait staff doubled as host and server and or server and bus. It is a management issue, and as such, a manager and or host would likely solve this dilemma. The high quality food, however, significantly reduced the impact of the borderline incompetent service. With all that said, I would dine here again in a heartbeat."

  • "Heard mixed reviews but decided on a mid-week dinner. Formaggi platter included a warmed brie topped with parmesan ; lightly breaded chevre, tastefully seasoned and golden brown on the outside, yet warm and creamy on the inside; two slices of hard cheese and a couple of slices of homemade crostini were non-descript. A couple of chunks of Regianno, crisp crostini and fig jam might would be better. Stuffed zucchini flowers were a nice find on the menu. Highlights were the home made pasta- EXCEPTIONAL and cooked perfectly. The capellini and two large meatballs were outstanding. Meatballs were homemade and perfectly browned and seasoned. Paparradelle in pink sauce and was perfect with a delicate pink sauce that glazed each wide pasta."

  • "I heard the pasta was very good. This restaurant should stick to what they know. Their overpriced fixed price dinner for this past Valentine's Day was more than they kitchen or the withstand could manage. Many complained and some simply left after waiting far too long for even a first course. We'll not return until we see consistent positive reviews again. Again, a message for the chef...please stick to what you do best."

Known for fresh pastas but unfort only one offering on a prix fix menu with lobster which many folks cannot eat My halibut was dry apparently over cooked Red velvet dessert choice was served without cream cheese icing! For red velvet lovers that is unacceptable"

  • "An abandoned retail store that was filled with leftover diner chairs.Wife’s’ food was laughable. She ordered a salad that was the size of a beach ball. The giant square gnocchi was like eating marshmallows’ of dough! The food came out in very odd time intervals. Once we received the check, the waiter then came around with an IPAD (which we’re addicted to our own, so no problems there) only to have the waiter hover over, grilling us about the tip you’re going to leave. I always, at a minimum leave 20% tip (and often more having been a waiter) but very much wished I had only left 10% for this circus. When restaurants’ think they can charge a lot for mediocre product for no other reason then the their location, it quickly becomes apparent!"

  • "Heard about this restaurant via word of mouth, and was told I had to try it. So glad we did We are locals that like to try out all the new places we can off season, and I would highly recommend it. Service was a bit off, as our server forgot our pasta course, but we waited for it (papardelle with a wonderful vodka-type sauce) and it was well worth it. The ricotta crostini appetizer was simply amazing. Prices are moderate, but it's a BYOB so that is a plus. Will definitely go back."

  • "Dined on Christmas Day at Pastaio with my wife. Didn't know what to expect with all of the mixed reviews but unfortunately most of the negative review items were still apparent - inattentive staff (it wasn't very busy), so-so food( when I was hoping for something really memorable and worth making this a go-to spot) and one of the worst dining room spots at which I've been seated (at least from my table wedged against the screen leading back to the kitchen. Can't speak for the rest of the room as all I had to look at was the back wall. There just shouldn't be a table in this spot in my opinion. Especially on a slow Christmas Day service.) It's the little things that make a restaurant special and Pastaio got them all wrong on this day."

  • "The food was absolutely fantastic! Love that it was BYOB! Great homemade pasta and amazing meatballs made from short rib and brisket! I would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a romantic Italian evening. Menu changes frequently so the ingredients are always fresh! We will absolutely be back!"

  • "This the third time to Pastaio. The food is constantly good. This time we enjoyed the spicy shrimp and the salmon. The latter was over broccoli rave and fava beans. Grilled to perfection. We shared a field greens salad. Not limp at all. Chocolate gelato - creamy and rich. The only thing that may be an issue is service. I have noticed that once the night reaches the usual 7:00 pm rush service slows significantly. The kitchen slow and there does not appear to be enough wait staff to deal with a full restaurant. This does not particularly bother is. We just male reservations at 6:00 and everything is fine. By the time the rush hits we are basically done. So, if you are in a hurry, just dine earlier. Pastaio is worth it. We will be back."

  • "Don't get me wrong the food is very delicious. Homemade at it's very best and Byob!!! Sat down and waited 12 minutes for Someone to fill our water and open our wine. Not very good. We almost got up and left. Went on a Saturday night and there were only two waitresses and no bus boys. Not good planning. The Ambiance is very dark and barely any at all. Need to make the place a little more home like or romantic in order to well in this town. Hope they can fix some of these problems."

  • "We have dined here a couple,of times and the service has not improved one bit. We had to search for someone to seat us, wait and then request a menu and wine to be opened. It was a cold, snowy night and there wasn't any soup on the menu because the chef needs to prepare it every day and didn't have the time and although we had an early reservation, the meals we ordered weren't available . The pasta was dry, with overlooked shrimp. No olive oil and bread on the table at an Italian restaurant? The prices have gone up without an improvement in service and very spotty food experience."

  • "This was my second time here, first time food was good and service was less than stellar but we could handle it. This time is was horrible. To start it was a 7:15 reservation on NYE, a special menu which should have made it easy on the staff and kitchen. To start we sat for 15 minutes before anyone came to our table. Finally when the server did show up, she was clueless. I dont want to waste much time here, but the owners need to figure out how to better prepare the staff before no one comes back again. The worst dinning experience with regards to service in my life. Lucky the food was good. I might try one more time before they go on the never again list."

  • "My mother and I were visiting Spring Lake and had an absolutely wonderful dining experience here - on par with any fine restaurant in the greater NYC area. The food was all fantastic - we had the Pastaio Salad (you know a restaurant is really good when their simplest dish - a very basic green salad - is absolutely outstanding), famous Meatballs over homemade pasta, and Espresso Fudge Sundae. Of all the dishes, the Meatballs were the most impressive - just incredible! The service was a bit lacking - seemed a bit amateur and rushed. Even though the town was nearly desolate on this December weekend, the restaurant filled up by 8pm, and the food still came out promptly - very appreciated. Highly recommended!"

  • "We dined on Christmas Day. The decor was very nice and the staff was friendly. Meatballs and pasta were very good. The service was not so good. Several people waited on us so it was difficult to tell who was doing what. Food was very, very slow coming out and the wait staff seemed scattered and confused. Pasta was a bit pricey and overall the restaurant was not worth a second visit."

  • "For Christmas Eve. The advertised "seven fish" dinner was not available. They said you had to order individually. That was the first clue. My 3 person party was not going to order seven menu items. Even if we were willing seven different types of fish were not available. Same waitress but some tables that arrived after us were long gone before we got our entres. We were there for 3 hours and the place wasn't even full. Finally we got the receptionist's attention and she agreed to check on our meals. When she came back she actually said the she couldnt find our meals but that there was a lot of activity in the kitchen so "hopefully your meals will arrive shortly" with a doubtfull grin. I was amazed! Food was awful."

  • ""Special Thanksgiving Menu" advertised, but actually only one entree (turkey stuffed with sausage over a pumpkin puree and broccoli) was on the menu! Every other side was a la carte. All other entrees were pasta centric. My guests wanted to leave and go elsewhere, but we decided to stay. That faux pas aside, everything was delicious. Most tender, moist turkey I have ever tasted, puree was superb, side veggies of asparagus and spinach were excellent. Stuffing nicely seasoned. Service was attentive, as restaurant was almost empty. BYOB. Noted other menu items (pasta centric) seemed a tad pricey ($24 for ravioli?) but guess that is offset by the BYOB feature. Will return next Thanksgiving. Will also try a pasta meal next summer."

  • "I enjoyed dining at Pastaio. Perfect place for a "girls dinner out." The food was delicious and 3 of us ordered the Gnocchi dish and loved it! The atmosphere was calm, quiet and very relaxing. Its a BYOB so we brought our favorite wine. Service was excellent and timed very well. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Perfect for date night, or just a night out with friends. Will definitely be going back to try more of their signature pasta dishes."

  • "The home made pasata was excellent and the salad was delicious too. The staff is very friendly, unfortunately the service is horrendous. There is no concept of time and how to manage a table. A training session is needed to teach the staff on how to run a dinner service. Also, the bench booths need cushions. Sorry, but we will not return."

  • "We were definitely blown away by the outstanding food at Pastaio, an unassuming storefront restaurant in Spring Lake. The staff couldn't have been any more attentive or helpful. My husband's clam stew appetizer was delicious and more like an entree. The homemade pasta melts in your mouth. We had the cheese ravioli, which were incredible, and the meatball was like nothing I've ever tasted. The chocolate marquis dessert was also fabulous. Bravo, bravo!!"

  • "We dine out often and support local businesses on the Shore. I don't like to do this to an owner. But this was a comically bad evening. From the robotic, unfriendly hostess, to the loud, odd mix of music, to the cold temperature of the room, to the most uncomfortable chairs ever, it was awful. When Ben the bus boy - who was lovely - is the best thing about the night, you know you are in trouble. The actual server took our bottle of wine, did not open it in front of us but instead returned with it in a pitcher saying the cork had broke. We never saw the bottle or her again. The table in front of us remained uncleared, full of half eaten food for our whole meal. We can get mediocre food elsewhere with far better ambiance and service. Go Ben!"

  • "We gathered for a birthday celebration and when we arrived we were told they did not take any requests from Open Table. The table I wanted, which was empty, was unavailable. The first course was great, Zucchini Blossoms. The second, shrimp with vodka sauce was shrimp with red sauce. The waiter refused to see that the vodka sauce and the red sauce my friend had were the same. Even at dessert, they could not serve my party all at once. The ice cream was good. The cannoli took forever. Poorly done overall."

  • "Would highly recommend this restaurant. It has a changing menu based on what is fresh and in season. BYOB which provides you the opportunity to enjoy your favorite wine. It was well staffed receiving prompt attentive service. My husband had the chef's specialty, which was meat balls and homemade pasta.I sampled his dinner and they were the most delicious meatballs I ever ate. I had the swordfish and it was impeccably prepared. It was served over spaghetti squash and potatoes. The flavor was scrumptious. We had gelato for dessert. There were many, many flavors and actually the best I have ever tasted."

  • "We had a 70 minute wait for our apps. No updates of any kind from waitress. After an additional 50 minute wait no sign of main course. Two hours into our "dining experience" we called it a day. The waitress said the chef apologized for the delay. This was our third trip to Pastaio- unfortunately, it will be our last."

I also didn't feel rushed, we wanted to relax. The waitress asked us if it was ok to prepare our entrees, she sensed we wanted to take our time, which I really appreciated. We will definitely come back."
