Diner Reviews
  • "The food and service at Passionfish is the excellent. We look forward to our trips to the area just to eat there! Can't count how many times we have recommended this place to friends and family and will continue to do so."

  • "First time had the Scallop starter and one of the fish entrees. It was so good I had to return for the scallop entree. It did not disappoint."

  • "I like that the food is local, organic, sustainable when possible and the restaurant is green certified. They offer plenty of options for people with food allergies and take it seriously with a separate menu clearly labeled. We ordered the rainbow trout and rockfish, which were delicious. Portions are right. The presentation could have been a tad more creative for the caliber of that restaurant. Service was efficient but not overly friendly. Pricing is surprisingly affordable for the quality of the food. The wine list is extensive and decently priced, but there are only a few options by the glass. The setting is modern and elegant. I enjoyed my experience at Passionfish, but I would bring more creativity into the presentation of the dishes."

  • "Lovely casual, ambiance. Fish cooked to perfection with delicious sides. Prompt and friendly server. Definitely wish to return when in Pacific Grove."

  • "One of new favorite restaurants anywhere in CA. Besides being a virtual pioneer as partner of the Monterey Bay Aquarium sustainability programs, the cooking is world class, and the wine list is my favorite- of all time, and of the hundreds of places I've been. Great wine prices and more importantly, they GET IT when it comes to balance and food pairings. All the unusual and excellent small batch producers and some real surprises. Servers trained and incredibly knowledgable about things such as celiac disease, seafood and wine pairings. There is nothing ordinary about Passionfish. It is superb."

  • "We love Passionfish's sensitive preparations of sustainable seafood and other dishes, broad list of reasonably priced wines and friendly, professional service. Kudos to maitre d' Nate and crew for another wonderful dining experience. We'll be back soon for sure!"

  • "The place does tend to get packed at night it seems so a reservation would be recommended if you don't want to wait. Otherwise the meal my gf and I had was spectacular. The 12 hour lamb was so freaking tender, they give you a spoon to eat it with. The scallop over the risotto cake was really good. I can't recall everything we had but we really really liked everything. We were also surprised about the pricing, not too bad for a place like that. Definitely will repeat when we are in the area."

  • "This was our second visit to the restaurant. Aperitifs were excellent. The fish soup was exceptional. We soaked up every last drop in bread. The entrees were also great. Sturgeon, Wild Alaskan Salmon and Scallops. Fresh, creative sauces and sides. Totally different vibe from the standard seafood places I have been to. A MUST have if you are in the Monterrey area."

  • "I have eaten here 3 times, but last ate at Passionfish almost 3 years ago and loved it. Coming back to Monterey I found the menu more elaborate, but the wonderful seafood now lost in heavy sauces. We had scallops and Maine lobster, and the heavy sauce did not help since the lobster was overcooked and dry. We had fruit cobbler for desert which server described as light, but had a big piece of inch thick heavy dough surrounded by a little fruit. Sad to see a great restaurant losing its touch."

  • "We had a wonderful experience here. The crudo on the specials list was spectacular - one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. The fish was of the highest quality and the accompanying ingredients were creative; an unexpected burst of deliciousness! We could have had three more plates of it. The scallops and banana bread dessert were also fantastic. The local wild king salmon and corn/tomato side, though of exceptional quality and perfectly cooked, was a little bland for my taste. Our server took one of our apps off the bill because we waited a little longer than usual for our entrees. We were surprised as we had not complained about the timing, but that gesture reflected their great service and high standards. We loved the artwork!"

  • "This is a truly outstanding restaurant. The staff are great people. Food is just wonderful, and the wine list and pricing is the way things should be. Excellent selection and very fair prices. Only attitude found here is good!"

  • "We arrived a few minutes ahead of our 6:30 reservation and were seated at a nice table for 2. The placed filled up within a half hour and had a great vibe to it but still not too noisy. Tables are a touch close together. We could hear our neighbours conversation as if they were speaking to us. Many locals judging by the conversations with the waiter and waitresses. My wive had a fantastic set of vegetarian dishes. Very tasty though the vegetarian selection was limited. I had the best tasting halibut I have had in my life. Done to perfection and melted in my mouth. Very attentive, but not intrusive service. We had a half bottle as I was driving and the wine selection was spectacular."

  • "My friends and I had been wanting to try Passionfish, so we finally decided to try it out for my friend's birthday. When I reserved a table through OpenTable, I put in the comments that it was his birthday, and when we got the menus, they said "Happy Birthday" across the top of them. We enjoyed a tasty bottle of wine from the "Strange and Wonderful" list and all of the food was fresh and delicious! I will go back again."

  • "I had made a reservation with notes that this was my girl friend's birthday. They went the extra mile to make my reservation Just perfect. When we got to the restaurant we mentioned my reservation name. They said it would only be a minute to set up. I had to run out to the car to bring in some wine (which we decided to pick a sparkling wine instead from the menu), upon getting back in, my friend was already at our table. She responded that she got the table that she wanted, cozy and romantic, not too noisy. When we looked at the menus, at the top it said happy birthday instead of the restaurant name. The waitress came over to introduce herself and responded happy birthday! My friend was a bit astonished that she knew. It was perfect!"

  • "Overstated and undelivered on ALL the local hipe. Yes, GREAT wine list!! But, The BEST Food Experiences remains in Carmel by the Sea."

  • "I've dined at Passionfish with my women's group that gathers each spring in Monterey and looked forward to sharing the experience with my husband. Our waitress took time to help us choose a wine from a comprehensive list. Passionfish marks up its wines at a much lower percentage than do most other restaurants. We were impressed with her familiarity with the items on the menu. Small slices of raw fish (I forget what kind) topped with a granita that tasted of ginger was so good. The dungeness crab and avocado salad with spicy ginger vinaigrette contained chunks of fresh crab and perfectly ripe avocado. For main plates we shared the sea scallops with tomato-truffle butter and the sturgeon with lemon-white bean salad."

  • "For over a decade, Passionfish has served up responsibly sourced seafood to the most discerning foodies. We've been freq diners over those ~15 yrs. Feel no shame as you enjoy beautifully prep'd seafood apps or entrees, as PF assures that your fish was properly farmed or caught w/o harm to our aqua-ecosystem! Janae & friends have gone a step further by providing wonderful & extensive wine choices at well-below market price. The professional staff are knowledgeable & passionate about both the food & the wine on offer. Sea scallop on artichoke risotto cake? Super! Rainbow trout stuffed with basil? Fantastic. My favorite? Rockfish with Ted's fantastic Black pepper rum sauce. Finally, their vegetarian choices are always impeccable."

  • "Passionfish is dedicated to serving sustainable seafood, and they do it very well. The food is excellent and the portions are not overly large. Your plate is likely to be clean when you are finished, The wine list is excellent and the prices not exorbitant. The service is friendly and knowledgeable. It is one of our favorite restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula, and one we typically recommend to visitors if they are interested in seafood (the non-sea food items are excellent as well)"

  • "I know, who orders a steak at a restaurant that is known for fish? Well, just in case you think about it, DON"T. I ordered the ribeye and it was awful - no flavor at all. How does one mess up a good ribeye? My wife had the scallops and even though the portion was quite small (3 scallops), it was very good."

  • "Passionfish has been a reliable destination for every trip I make to Monterey. As always, the décor was elegant, the service impeccable, and the food beautifully presented. Yet tonight: the food was a bit disappointing. My appetizer was a single large crab cake, surely beautiful but . . . well, a bit bland (even I make a more tasty crab cake!) After eyeing the three huge scallops served to the guest at the next table, I ordered the scallops for my entrée ($26). I was disappointed to receive three small scallops; I struggled to make three bites out of each one (they could have easily have been consumed in 5-6 bites.) My partner ordered the halibut ($32)--tasty and beautifully prepared, but the portion was again remarkable small."

  • "All the food is fresh and great, but the appetizers stand out! The scallop appetizer is worth the whole trip. Two orders make a whole meal at less than an entree in cost. The tomato soup is heavenly and the Fish soup spicy, tasty and amazingly good ( be sure to dip their great breat bread in it!). Salads innovative and tasty as well. Make a meal of a table of appetizers and all share it to be able to try more. Or just go with an entre, as they are superb as well. I go there every time in get to Montery area. Prices reasonable. Consistently great."

  • "The layout, decor and ambience of the restaurant was a little cramped and nondescript. More like a bistro than a fine dining establishment. Service was good, but not"

  • "Passionfish manages to astound whenever we are able to get there for dinner. We've tried crab cakes at every seafood restaurant we've ever gone to, from Seattle to Los Angeles, but the crab cakes with lime relish at Passionfish are the BEST in the WEST! The crab and avocado salad is to die for, the scallops were amazing and the dessert tray was full of scrumptious, decadent delights. The menu changes frequently to reflect the best of local, sustainable catches. We've tried many different entrees from the menu and daily specials over the years and have never been disappointed! The Chefs are imaginative and creative, using locally grown fresh produce and fruit whenever possible. The wait staff is superb."

  • "We always enjoy going to Passionfish when we are in Pacific Grove. Only complaint is that it is always too warm in the dinning rooms. The staff tries to accommodate and adjust the room temperature when asked, but if you are in one of the back rooms it may take the entire meal to feel any relief."

  • "We've dined here maybe 10 times over 9 years, and this is the first time we've felt we were being rushed. I remember friendlier and more relaxed service. Perhaps they over-booked. Also, the wines by the glass selection has decreased significantly - disappointing. A big reason we go is the wine list and reasonable prices. Don't always want a whole bottle, though. The food was amazing as always. Please let us relax, enjoy our meal and celebrate."

  • "The menu was pretty all-inclusive for a fish place, very pricey. However when you enter a restaurant, and they have a large, glassed display of wine bottles, and they hand you a wine list that looks like a small volume, you kind of expect that they will have more than 7 wines by the glass. Well, they DON'T. I understand that this is wine country, or close. I understand that a lot of serious wine people will order a bottle. But for people who are still "exploring" when it comes to what they like in wine ( and don't you think we all should be???), or for people whose spouse does not drink wine, don't you think they could give us a few more choices by the glass????? Very disappointing."

  • "Monterey/Carmel was our last stop in our 2 week holiday to the SF area and we've eaten at quite a few highly-rated restaurants but the dish that stood out most for me from the entire trip is the crabmeat and avocado salad at Passionfish. We also had the calamari as a starter. The dip that accompanied this dish was unusual but good. My daughter had the lobster tail and my husband, the scallops which they both enjoyed very much. The only downside to this dining experience is that though the establishment does not turn away children, they offer only a very limited choice for them; 2 if I'm not mistaken. My young son chose to have the buttered pasta with cheese and did not complain but I do wish they can do better in that aspect."

  • "We both started with the crab avocado salad and agreed this was the best salad EVER! We followed with the scallops and the lobster which were equally as great. For dessert we had the chocolate cake and banana bread pudding and everything from beginning to end was outstanding. Will definitely return when back in the Carmel area."

  • "A group of four dined at Passionfish this week and we were very pleased. The service is impeccable: just the right blend of very knowledgeable (our server could recommend wines with great detail about taste, and knew which dishes were gluten free), caring but non-intrusive. The food was interesting and nicely plated, and the portions fair for the price. I loved every bite of my goat cheese salad and scallop dinner. My husband loved his catfish starter and liked the rock cod dinner. Our friends loved their dishes as well. I would go there again in a heartbeat."

  • "Known for sustainable food this restaurant featured a fantastic wine list and a good choice of entrees for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. I had the scallops and they were very good. No view was the only negative, it just sits on the street in pacific grieve like so many other restaurants."

  • "The food came fast which is good but we finally had a babysitter so it was our date night and it went by too fast. My fish was okay. Not great but not bad. My husband got lamb and it tasted amazing which surprised me. His beer was also really good. Other than that it was okay. Probably wouldn't go back. Wasn't worth the money."

  • "We visit the Carmel Peninsula about 5 times a year and no visit would be complete without eating at Passionfish. They are sustainable, always great ambiance and most of all...fabulous, creative food. I am hooked on the crab/avocado stack, but always try another dish as well. Service is always professional, helpful, friendly, but not overbearing….just LOVE this place."
