Diner Reviews
  • "This sustainable seafood restaurant is located in a quiet commercial area and a few miles from touristy Cannery Row. Better quality and price than Fisherman's What area. I was celebrating a friend's birthday and was pleasantly surprise to see "happy birthday" printed on the menu above the date. Everything is fresh and local if possible. Try local Monterey calamari or Monterey spot prawns when in season. The wild king salmon I ordered was thick and moist fillet with a hint of citrus marinade. It was served over fresh corn with baby potatoes. My partner had several tender pieces of sturgeon over a medley of veggies with preserved lemons. The is a vegetarian dish and grass fed beef if you are not into seafood."

  • "Appetizers were wonderful! We split a crab cake which was served with an amazing tomato relish. The heirloom tomato salad was lightly dressed to enhance the perfect tomato flavor. The wine list was very reasonable, so we shared a bottle of rosé with our fish entrees. Altogether a nice dinner."

  • "Good food in small portions. The Rib Eye was very fatty and difficult to cut, even with a steak knife. The scallops were three medium sized morsels. The lobster was shelled and amounted to about three table spoons. The soups were plentiful."

  • "Everything about this restaurant is excellent. I will definitely go back and take visiting guests to enjoy the superb quality and execution of the food, the service and their amazing wine list. The noise level is overwhelming, way beyond "energetic", we basically needed to shout in order to be able to hear what we were saying to each other or the waitress."

  • "Certainly after a day at the Monterey Aquarium , the desire for fresh fish is strong! This is the place then."

  • "Truly remarkable food, well excuted and tasty. Service equal to food and great French inspired wine list and reasonably priced."

  • "Nice atmosphere, very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly waiter. Accompaniments with food fit perfectly. Treasure of a find for us as we were looking for a seafood experience beyond the norm and we found it here. Highly recommended."

  • "Passionfish is always our first dinner when we visit Pacific Grove. Their wine list is excellent and affordable, and the food and service are tops. We always recommend Passionfish to friends and relatives, and we get praises from them after they've eaten at Passionfish. We also recommend Passionfish to other guests at our favorite B & B in Pacific Grove -- Old St. Angela's Inn."

  • "I had the rock fish with a wonderful peppery spice rum sauce that was out of this world. My friend had the halibut that she said was to die for. Great service from our server but when checking in I was told that they did not have my reservation. After a few minutes, they found it but for a couple of moments I was not happy after receiving two emails confirming my reservation."

  • "My wife and I and a colleague ate at Passionfish while in Pacific Grove over a long weekend. We were more than pleased. My wife and colleague went for the halibut dish which was superb, so much so that I braved her wrath and poached a few forkfuls. Nicely seared, with a terrific tamarind sauce. Yum! I had small plates and got an heirloom tomato & beet salad with fried olives sprinkled in there topped with mega-delicious balsamic & oil dressing. A fat, tender scallop on a dumpling of spiced cheese-rice, and finished up with a filo-encased cheese buried in perfectly dressed raw spinach. We topped it all off by sharing two helpings of the best peach cobbler ever with vanilla bean ice cream. Like the ex-governator said, "I'll be back!""

  • "Fresh, inventive seafood dishes combined with top-notch service and a quiet calm ambience made our dinner here very special. They emphasize sustainable seafood (naturally) prepared to showcase the tastiness and freshness of the ingredients. They bemoaned the fact that on the night we went, they only offered one dish made from local-caught fish (rockfish) but the others were from not very far away. We had rockfish, scallops, and sturgeon for entrees. The wine list is comprehensive and our waitress was spot-on with the description of a Russian river pinot noir we weren't familiar with."

  • "This is a good place to go if you love seafood and modern cooking. For me, despite the availability of allergy information it did not go well. I couldn't eat my starter because the salsa listed on the menu was not on the side but integrated into the dish which made it far too hot for me to eat. My main, of wild salmon, was disappointing. The fish was nice but needed to be cooked more. I don't enjoy the modern way of serving fish 'underdone' like steak. The accompanying veggies were way too sweet- stew of corn onions and celery and a VERY small amount of potatoes. My companions enjoyed their seafood dinners. No dairy-free dessert available despite my request when booking. A neighbouring coffee shop (closed in the evening ) had vegan cake!"

  • "Best meal in a very long time. Between my wife and me, we had five different times, all of which were great. Most were prepared in a very unique way. There is a great wine list which is reasonably priced. The server was extremely helpful in suggesting pairings."

  • "My wife has food allergies, and the waitress made sure the food was prepared as needed. She had scallops and green beans, and the portions were perfect. She also said the scallops were the best she'd ever had. I had the spicy fish soup and the halibut and both were delicious. My wife also had a glass of the sparkling chardonnay and said it was wonderful. To top it off, we shared a dessert that was light and delicious and a great way to finish the meal. For the first time in our 35-year marriage, we left no food on our plates while dining out. Passionfish is a great place to eat--we are so glad we found it. We'll be back next time we visit Monterey. Thank you for a perfect evening!"

  • "We spent a week touring Napa Valley, San Francisco, Monterey & Carmel, and this was honestly the best meal we had in our entire time there. The menu was eclectic, and a little daunting, but the waitress walked us through the menu and recommended some of her favorites. The halibut & scallops that we ordered were some of the freshest that I have ever tasted. And, the prices were reasonable for what we ordered. Would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "The noise level is a little high, the food is outstanding, the service was very good, the price was average, corkage was $20, nice touch on the personalized menu for our 34th wedding anniversary. Will return."

  • "First time visit that was extremely good. The upbeat feel, terrific service and great food make for a fabulous dinner. Everyone was very nice and the food was cooked perfectly. Keeping the wine prices moderate for very good wines was also appreciated and noted as something different from most experiences. Will definitely visit again. Chose if from a web-site review, and the feel of the people there really comes through in the dining experience."

  • "I was at Passionfish a couple of months ago and had a good experience. I returned on Friday with my wife and another couple from out of town. The room was incredibly noisy and extremely warm and stuffy. The food was boring and mundane -- the presentation was very unappealing. It would have been nice had the two people at the front desk said good night to us -- but no such nicety. With so many excellent restaurants in the area, I'll not return to Passionfish."

  • "This was our first time at Passionfish and it didn't disappoint. We stayed close by and were able to walk to the restaurant. The food was outstanding (Duck Confit and 18 hour lamb breast). I will definitely recommend the restaurant to friends!"

  • "The salads were the highlight of our meal. Tomato/Beet with fried olives was superb and the salad greens with honeyed nuts and curry flavored dressing was delicious. The added pastry with gorgonzola did not mix well and could have been omitted. The main dishes (sturgeon, halibut)were both very good, but we both found there were too many flavors in the dishes. Overall, very pleasant, very interesting......Next time we come, we'll try the "orange wine" selection."

  • "Passionfish simply delivers with sustainable seafood expertly prepared; a well-balanced and reasonably-priced wine list; friendly, professional service; and a nice downtown PG location with lots of natural light in the dining rooms. It continues to be one of our favorites on the Monterey Peninsula. We'll be back!"

  • "Very creative and well balanced tastes, excellent service, tasteful decor, quiet, nice art. We liked having 6 choices of fish dinners. One of the best dinners on our 2 week California trip. Highly recommended."

  • "We booked on the day of and got a table. It was packed when we arrived which made us feel more comfortable not knowing the area very well. There is no bar nor a decent bar nearby which was a bummer. We brought our own wine and paid the $20 corkage fee. The food was very good. The salads and bread were super. The portions are very small so be prepared for that. My scallop entrée came with two small and one medium size scallops for $26. Disappointed with the volume, but the flavor was very good. My wife loved her halibut. Service is excellent start to finish. With the above said we recommend Passionfish."

  • "I loved the fact that this restaurant had sustainable seafood selections. The food was amazing and they care about the environment and the way in which the fish are caught. The staff was phenomenal and attended to our every need!"

  • "My friend Ruthann had the Talapia entree. It was visually lovely, delicious and memorable. I had the Rockfish entree recommended by our waitress. Unfortunately it was boring in presentation and flavor. We liked the restaurant environment and service. I enjoyed my spicy fish soup. Just wish I could have had a 'wow' dinner."

  • "Reputation for creative menu choices & outstanding, affordable wine list holds up. Great: attentive, knowledgeable waitstaff; sturgeon entree cooked perfectly w/ luscious veg and bean garnish; clever flavor combinations (fantastic potatoes and purslane served w/ rib-eye steak); lemon verbena creme brulee; atmosphere & decoration. Not great: smoked trout tostada appetizer w/ great tostada base, jalapeño pesto and salsa brava but robbed the fish of center stage; rib-eye steak ordered medium rare served rare but promptly re-fired, though not as tender as hoped for. When I pointed out that the restaurant is known for fish, after all, my dining companion noted, "If it can't be prepared perfectly for $38, it should not be on the menu.""

  • "The food was great but I had expected a little more beef in the wagyu beef. When we arrived to check in, our reservation wasn't found. Fortunately there was no problem seating us."

  • "We ordered the scallops, striped bass crudo, duck confit, lamb breast and bread pudding. And I can honestly say that everything was delicious, very well done, beautiful presentation and plenty of quantify for the $$. the waiter wasn't very nice, she rolled her eyes and didn't like to be approach, but since the food was so good and didn't really care about the waiter."

  • "Had the sturgeon and my partner had the salmon, both were expertly prepared and the sauces did not overwhelm the delicate flavors. The crab & avocado salad was light and elegant with arugula & a drizzle of syrupy balsamic vinegar. Dessert was light and flavorful with the banana walnut bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and the lemon verbena creme brûlée striking the perfect after note. Wines were reasonably priced and complimented each dish. The service was wonderfully welcoming and helpful. A nice touch, which is missing in a lot of establishments, were the very warm plates, that kept the food palatable to the very last bite. Being from San Francisco, the prices were on par for the service and deliciousness of the dishes. We will return!"

  • "Had a return visit as we really enjoyed our dinner here last year. This year the seafood selection was less broad. I had hoped to have a sea bass or other white fish fillet. The only thing close was halibut, which I passed on and selected the scallops. They were very tender and flavorful, perhaps a little on the small side. My wife had sturgeon which she enjoyed (I tasted it and it tasted like normal fresh sturgeon, but I am glad I did not have it)."

  • "Passionfish was recommended by some friends of ours and it turned out even better that we'd hoped. The food was wonderfully prepared (e.g., perfectly cooked scallops, yum) and the service really great. One of us is allergic to shellfish and the waitress was on top of everything that might come in contact with shrimp, etc. and was able to offer substitutions. The service was also efficient, gracious and never "missing in action." We will definitely go back when we are in Monterey again. Oh, and the prices...they really could charge twice as much. Shhhhhhh!"
