Diner Reviews
  • "This is a good place to go if you love seafood and modern cooking. For me, despite the availability of allergy information it did not go well. I couldn't eat my starter because the salsa listed on the menu was not on the side but integrated into the dish which made it far too hot for me to eat. My main, of wild salmon, was disappointing. The fish was nice but needed to be cooked more. I don't enjoy the modern way of serving fish 'underdone' like steak. The accompanying veggies were way too sweet- stew of corn onions and celery and a VERY small amount of potatoes. My companions enjoyed their seafood dinners. No dairy-free dessert available despite my request when booking. A neighbouring coffee shop (closed in the evening ) had vegan cake!"

  • "Best meal in a very long time. Between my wife and me, we had five different times, all of which were great. Most were prepared in a very unique way. There is a great wine list which is reasonably priced. The server was extremely helpful in suggesting pairings."

  • "My wife has food allergies, and the waitress made sure the food was prepared as needed. She had scallops and green beans, and the portions were perfect. She also said the scallops were the best she'd ever had. I had the spicy fish soup and the halibut and both were delicious. My wife also had a glass of the sparkling chardonnay and said it was wonderful. To top it off, we shared a dessert that was light and delicious and a great way to finish the meal. For the first time in our 35-year marriage, we left no food on our plates while dining out. Passionfish is a great place to eat--we are so glad we found it. We'll be back next time we visit Monterey. Thank you for a perfect evening!"

  • "The noise level is a little high, the food is outstanding, the service was very good, the price was average, corkage was $20, nice touch on the personalized menu for our 34th wedding anniversary. Will return."

  • "Great as always! Service and Food were excellent. The four of us selected fish main course meals and were all very pleased."

  • "We enjoyed our repeat visits to Passionfish for the good food and service. We have yet to be disappointed with anything on the menu or with the service."

  • "Dinner was amazing. The waitstaff knew the food very well. We will go back next time we are in the area."

  • "I was at Passionfish a couple of months ago and had a good experience. I returned on Friday with my wife and another couple from out of town. The room was incredibly noisy and extremely warm and stuffy. The food was boring and mundane -- the presentation was very unappealing. It would have been nice had the two people at the front desk said good night to us -- but no such nicety. With so many excellent restaurants in the area, I'll not return to Passionfish."

  • "This was our first time at Passionfish and it didn't disappoint. We stayed close by and were able to walk to the restaurant. The food was outstanding (Duck Confit and 18 hour lamb breast). I will definitely recommend the restaurant to friends!"

  • "The salads were the highlight of our meal. Tomato/Beet with fried olives was superb and the salad greens with honeyed nuts and curry flavored dressing was delicious. The added pastry with gorgonzola did not mix well and could have been omitted. The main dishes (sturgeon, halibut)were both very good, but we both found there were too many flavors in the dishes. Overall, very pleasant, very interesting......Next time we come, we'll try the "orange wine" selection."

  • "My wife and I dined here. End-to-end, everything was excellent. Reasonably priced wine list. Locally sourced food prepared perfectly. I would recommend it and return on future trips."

  • "I had the most interesting rock fish recipe in my experience. Other items were excellent. Very noisy environment, though"

  • "Passionfish simply delivers with sustainable seafood expertly prepared; a well-balanced and reasonably-priced wine list; friendly, professional service; and a nice downtown PG location with lots of natural light in the dining rooms. It continues to be one of our favorites on the Monterey Peninsula. We'll be back!"

  • "Very creative and well balanced tastes, excellent service, tasteful decor, quiet, nice art. We liked having 6 choices of fish dinners. One of the best dinners on our 2 week California trip. Highly recommended."

  • "We booked on the day of and got a table. It was packed when we arrived which made us feel more comfortable not knowing the area very well. There is no bar nor a decent bar nearby which was a bummer. We brought our own wine and paid the $20 corkage fee. The food was very good. The salads and bread were super. The portions are very small so be prepared for that. My scallop entrée came with two small and one medium size scallops for $26. Disappointed with the volume, but the flavor was very good. My wife loved her halibut. Service is excellent start to finish. With the above said we recommend Passionfish."

  • "I loved the fact that this restaurant had sustainable seafood selections. The food was amazing and they care about the environment and the way in which the fish are caught. The staff was phenomenal and attended to our every need!"

  • "My friend Ruthann had the Talapia entree. It was visually lovely, delicious and memorable. I had the Rockfish entree recommended by our waitress. Unfortunately it was boring in presentation and flavor. We liked the restaurant environment and service. I enjoyed my spicy fish soup. Just wish I could have had a 'wow' dinner."

  • "Reputation for creative menu choices & outstanding, affordable wine list holds up. Great: attentive, knowledgeable waitstaff; sturgeon entree cooked perfectly w/ luscious veg and bean garnish; clever flavor combinations (fantastic potatoes and purslane served w/ rib-eye steak); lemon verbena creme brulee; atmosphere & decoration. Not great: smoked trout tostada appetizer w/ great tostada base, jalapeño pesto and salsa brava but robbed the fish of center stage; rib-eye steak ordered medium rare served rare but promptly re-fired, though not as tender as hoped for. When I pointed out that the restaurant is known for fish, after all, my dining companion noted, "If it can't be prepared perfectly for $38, it should not be on the menu.""

  • "The food was great but I had expected a little more beef in the wagyu beef. When we arrived to check in, our reservation wasn't found. Fortunately there was no problem seating us."

  • "We ordered the scallops, striped bass crudo, duck confit, lamb breast and bread pudding. And I can honestly say that everything was delicious, very well done, beautiful presentation and plenty of quantify for the $$. the waiter wasn't very nice, she rolled her eyes and didn't like to be approach, but since the food was so good and didn't really care about the waiter."

  • "Had the sturgeon and my partner had the salmon, both were expertly prepared and the sauces did not overwhelm the delicate flavors. The crab & avocado salad was light and elegant with arugula & a drizzle of syrupy balsamic vinegar. Dessert was light and flavorful with the banana walnut bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and the lemon verbena creme brûlée striking the perfect after note. Wines were reasonably priced and complimented each dish. The service was wonderfully welcoming and helpful. A nice touch, which is missing in a lot of establishments, were the very warm plates, that kept the food palatable to the very last bite. Being from San Francisco, the prices were on par for the service and deliciousness of the dishes. We will return!"

  • "Everything we had was very tasty, especially the scallops and the heirloom tomato salad. The staff was friendly and perfectly attentive. Plus they had cool bathrooms."

  • "Had a return visit as we really enjoyed our dinner here last year. This year the seafood selection was less broad. I had hoped to have a sea bass or other white fish fillet. The only thing close was halibut, which I passed on and selected the scallops. They were very tender and flavorful, perhaps a little on the small side. My wife had sturgeon which she enjoyed (I tasted it and it tasted like normal fresh sturgeon, but I am glad I did not have it)."

  • "Passionfish was recommended by some friends of ours and it turned out even better that we'd hoped. The food was wonderfully prepared (e.g., perfectly cooked scallops, yum) and the service really great. One of us is allergic to shellfish and the waitress was on top of everything that might come in contact with shrimp, etc. and was able to offer substitutions. The service was also efficient, gracious and never "missing in action." We will definitely go back when we are in Monterey again. Oh, and the prices...they really could charge twice as much. Shhhhhhh!"

  • "We came upon Passionfish when we could not book another restaurant after looking at positive reviews. Unfortunately our experience was not so good. First of all, if you are young avoid this one, we are in our 40s and everyone around us was about 20-30 years older. Secondly, the appetizers, scallops and ceviche was good but the entrees were really disappointing. "Spatzle with beef" was supposed to be German egg noodles with beef, it turned out like awful pieces of gnocchi like texture with something inside that we could not figure out. The beef was extremely fatty and not tasteful at all. I ordered "Tabuleh" which supposed to have bulgur with italian parsley etc.. I understand chef's creating their own but this was really bad. Avoid !!"

  • "Thank you for a beautiful time celebrating my fiancee's birthday. Personalized menu was a beautiful touch, noticed and appreciated. Excellent food, good service. Outstanding Busboy "Eddie". Excellent wine list. Next time I hope to leave room for more dessert. Order the Scallop appetizer... trust this foodie."

  • "This a great fish restaurant in a region with many great fish restaurants, but the quality of the food, the unique preparation, and the friendly service makes it a step above. They also have a robust collection of wines to go with your meal. Great for couples or families. Noise level was also good for normal conversations. If you find yourself in the Monterey area, this would be a great place for your meal."

  • "Its always a great food experience at Passionfish. Chef / owner Ted is creative and consistent. The staff is knowledgable and very efficient without hovering. The restaurant is sustainable which is an aded bonus."

  • "All in all, a positive experience. The service was attentive, but casual at the same time. We had the smoked trout ceviche tostaditas, duck confit, and rockfish. Everything was cooked very nicely though I did feel like I was eating California cuisine from the 90s. The menu was a bit outdated and nothing really stood out. I wouldn't go back just for the food. What was worth going there for was the wine list! It is extensive and incredibly affordable. Their prices are not much above retail - you couldn't ask for more in a wine program."

  • "First time had the Scallop starter and one of the fish entrees. It was so good I had to return for the scallop entree. It did not disappoint."

  • "I like that the food is local, organic, sustainable when possible and the restaurant is green certified. They offer plenty of options for people with food allergies and take it seriously with a separate menu clearly labeled. We ordered the rainbow trout and rockfish, which were delicious. Portions are right. The presentation could have been a tad more creative for the caliber of that restaurant. Service was efficient but not overly friendly. Pricing is surprisingly affordable for the quality of the food. The wine list is extensive and decently priced, but there are only a few options by the glass. The setting is modern and elegant. I enjoyed my experience at Passionfish, but I would bring more creativity into the presentation of the dishes."

  • "This was our second visit to the restaurant. Aperitifs were excellent. The fish soup was exceptional. We soaked up every last drop in bread. The entrees were also great. Sturgeon, Wild Alaskan Salmon and Scallops. Fresh, creative sauces and sides. Totally different vibe from the standard seafood places I have been to. A MUST have if you are in the Monterrey area."

  • "We had a wonderful experience here. The crudo on the specials list was spectacular - one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. The fish was of the highest quality and the accompanying ingredients were creative; an unexpected burst of deliciousness! We could have had three more plates of it. The scallops and banana bread dessert were also fantastic. The local wild king salmon and corn/tomato side, though of exceptional quality and perfectly cooked, was a little bland for my taste. Our server took one of our apps off the bill because we waited a little longer than usual for our entrees. We were surprised as we had not complained about the timing, but that gesture reflected their great service and high standards. We loved the artwork!"

  • "The place does tend to get packed at night it seems so a reservation would be recommended if you don't want to wait. Otherwise the meal my gf and I had was spectacular. The 12 hour lamb was so freaking tender, they give you a spoon to eat it with. The scallop over the risotto cake was really good. I can't recall everything we had but we really really liked everything. We were also surprised about the pricing, not too bad for a place like that. Definitely will repeat when we are in the area."
