Diner Reviews
  • "The food was quite good. My salmon was extraordinary. My husband's halibut was a tad overcooked. The salad was excellent. The champagne by the glass was excellent; the chardonay by the glass was unremarkable. Only real downside was we felt rushed."

  • "This was my first time dining here, and I had heard so many great reviews I wanted to take my bf here for his bday. Even though I am not much if a seafood eater they had a lot of options! The wine, the dinner and dessert were quite spectacular and the service was awesome!"

  • "again a wonderful dining experience! great service, interesting - and ever-changing - wine list with price points for everyone. But - the best part is the food - we go there often and there's enough variety in the menu not to get tired of the same things. applaud having sustainable choices always thoughtfully prepared."

  • "In California for 12 days...the best food during our entire stay....."

  • "We selected Passionfish for our 40th anniversary dinner, and it did not disappoint. Creative flavor combinations, perfectly prepared fish, beautiful presentations and attentive service..... who could ask for anything more!? The only off note was struck by an ongoing loud conversation at the adjacent table. Fortunately for us, we were able to scoot away from it once the table to the other side of us was vacated. Our waitress graciously helped us transfer plates etc. The complimentary dessert was a nice finish to a memorable meal. Thank you!"

  • "This is by far my favorite restaurant in the Carmel area! I eat here every time I am in town and have never been disappointed. The food is always exceptional and the service is top notch (last time I ate there our cab was 40 min out so the Manager had one of her staff give us a ride back to Carmel in her own car!). The wine list is notable in that all bottles are priced at retail with some real gems you probably have never heard of."

  • "Loved the beautiful local ingredients and the thoughtfulness in the preparation of their seasonal dishes. Unfortunately the service was an issue. One member of our party received a random dish that was not ordered. When the server finally returned to our table she gave a ridiculous excuse as to why the dish that was ordered had not arrived and never addressed the fact the wrong dish was sent to our table. By the time the missing entree made it the meal was over!"

  • "Great Californian gush restaurant with knowledgeable passionate staff, perhaps a little over hyped in reputation, but certainly worth a visit or two"

  • "A truly outstanding dining experience. We drove hundreds of miles out of our way just to be able to dine at Passion Fish."
    Dined on 8/11/2014
  • "Steak place can cook great seafood, a fish place should stick to fish. The appetizers are fantastic and could make a meal out of just ordering the top partof the menu. The seafood dishes are above average and very good but the non seafood dishes should be dropped all together. The special was rib eye and took three chances and the brisket was awful. The waitress explained the rib eye takes along time to cook and we need to eat the over cooked meat. What? They ruined the meat and we need to accept it. The service at that point went from excellent to good."

  • "This is the 2nd time in 4 days that we have dined at Passionfish during our stay in the Monterey Peninsula. We always dine here every time we visit Monterey. Our dining experience each time has always been exceptional. The restaurant features sustainable seafood & fresh local vegetables & fruit. Highly recommend it!"

  • "After dining at Passionfish three times, my husband and I have come to the conclusion that they serve the most creative, fresh, delicious seafood dishes in the area! During our last visit, we also discovered the fantastic lemon creme brûlée! The food is matched only by their outstanding, caring service. We've enjoyed introducing family members and friends to this restaurant because we can always count on having a wonderful dining experience here!"

  • "passionfish was a great choice for my husband and i for our 16th year anniversary. the fish selection was nice with unique fish, sauces and sides. the wine list was good -- nice prices. our server was super nice and knowledgeable! the only odd thing was that we were about 15 minutes early and they did not seat us until about 10 minutes after our reservation -- and there were plenty of tables. That is fine, but they were kind of rude when we were early. There is no bar if you are early."

  • "The food was really tasty and the presentation was beautiful. Kudos to the chef and to the wait staff, wait staff was very efficient and friendly. We enjoyed our dining experience, thank you!"

  • "You won't find a better food experience at the price. If you like varied innovative food with a gourmet but unpretentious style, then you should love this restaurant. Beyond that the wine list is unique and shockingly affordable-- think good just regular retail prices. The food flavor profile is adventurous with spicing that can vary from continent to continent (like we had a sort of Asian sashimi app with a more Moroccan influenced lamb entree). For this symphony of flavor we paid just 12 for reasonable sized apps and only 18 for the entree. Portion sizes are perfect such that we ate apps, entrees and desserts and felt satiated but not over stuffed. For average prices, we felt we had a truly impeccable food experience"

  • "The food was excellent, the wine list was quite good, but the service left something to be desired. It may not be the fault of this restaurant, though. I dined alone. Most waiters / waitresses do not know how to wait on a person dining alone. training is needed. They do not understand that the rhythm of service for a person dining alone is different from that of a group. There is no conversation between courses. The courses should come somewhat more quickly. I must also say, in the restaurant's favor that this is, so far, the only restaurant I have been in that offered pu ehre tea."

  • " A well known restaurant by all the locals. It was worth the drive from carmel. We had the fried oysters, trout ceviche, and crab and avocado salad to start. We were impressed right from the start! I went on to enjoy the duck. We would go back again and again. Service was great as well."

  • "Wife and I walked from Cannery Row, enjoyed seeing Pacific Grove on foot. About one half hour. Food was delightful. Service first rate. My lovely wife enjoyed an avocado/crab stack as a starter, really tasty. Main course were the scallops, truly memorable. I enjoyed the Morro Bay Fried Oysters as a starter and the Rockfish main entree. Fully recommend the place."

  • "This was second birthday dinner at the Passion Fish. The food is delicious and very reasonable in price. Our server suggested a nice white wine for us that paired nicely with our dinner. This is now my favorite place to have dinner when I visit Monterey."

  • "I had the lobster tail and it was the most succulent well cooked tail i've had. wine was great, service a bit slow but it was super busy. i wish there were a sommelier present to answer my wine questions but eventually the waiter was able to help :). love this restaurant, love the food."

  • "My husband and I were in the Monterey area for a weekend away, and had dinner at Passionfish. We were impressed with the friendly service and beautiful dishes. Our favorite dish was the duck confit. Very well cooked, tender, crisp and delicious. If I were in the area for dinner again, I would definitely go back for this dish."

  • "I will continue to dream about the crab avocado salad for months. A perfect beginning to a great meal. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and did not steer us wrong at any turn. She was attentive without being intrusive. We had mentioned that this was a 20th anniversary outing, and we were presented with a special menu that wished us well, received greetings from the host and server, and there was a subtle candle in our dessert. On a crowded Saturday night, we were escorted to a corner table and made to feel special at every turn. A perfect dining experience!"

  • "The restaurant menu had something for everybody: fish, duck, steak. The ambience was nice if a bit tightly packed. The wait-person was knowledgable and swift. Between the three of us we had halibut, duck and rainbow trout, all of which were well prepared. The portions were on the small side. We would go again, although we live in Santa Cruz, an hour away."

  • "I had long driven by Passion Fish and had never been able to go. I was in town with my Parents and they were really in the mood for some good seafood. The restaurants was crowded and busy when we arrived at our reservation time. They were running about 10 minutes behind. The server was bubbly and energetic and described the specials beautifully and we proceeded to have an outstanding salad with arugula and fresh goat chees burratta. Marinated peaches circled the bed of greens and toasty spiced pecans rounded out the amazing flavors. We had sturgeon, grilled trout, and scallops. All presented beautifully. My only note of improvement would be that the air was kind of stuffy and could have used some overhead fans."

  • "Passionfish served excellent food, fresh, mostly local and sustainable (they are committed to sustainable seafood). The fact that they sell wine on their list close to retail prices makes this restaurant an excellent deal--only more so because of the attention to detail in their menu. Highly recommended."

  • "Choosing PassionaFish to celebrate our 20th Anniversary and my husband's Birthday was one of the highlight's of our special weekend trip from San Diego to Pacific Grove. The staff was so sweet and wonderful, the wine selection was Ahhhhh-Mazing and the food, Oh my Goodness! Sooo good, the lobster was so tender and fresh, I'm certain that it was in the ocean hours before it was on my plate. They greeted us with menu's that read "Happy Anniversary" on mine and "Happy Birthday" on his, such a sweet thing to do! We had a very fine meal and the fact that it was packed with happy faces as we glanced around, confirmed our opinion was not unique. PassionFish is a wonderful reason to visit Pacific Grove as soon as possible. We can't wait to return."

  • "We were told we would love it and that is true! The greeting was warm, the service was friendly and knowledgable and fast without feeling rushed. The fresh fish was superb. We very much enjoyed the rockfish in an Asian glaze with a good rice side and wonderfully prepared veggies. The scallops were heavenly in a tomato truffle sauce accompanied by a terrific risotto. A real find in delightful Pacific Grove. Can't wait to return and try other choices!"

  • "With the past reviews and ratings, I expected everything to be phenomenal, but the only thing that was, was the fish stew soup. That was awesome! I did not enjoy the compliments if how my sturgeon was prepped nor how it tasted. Wish it came whole instead of sliced. The lamb was nice and render. Delish!"

  • "It's been twelve years since our last visit to Passionfish. It was a memorable evening meal back then, which is why we had to return again to see if it still measured up to the memory. Tuesday night's meal did not disappoint. I had trout two ways. The Smoked trout ceviche tostadita appetizers had flavors bursting in my mouth, while the basil stuffed Rainbow Trout and braised vegetables was savored to the very last. My wife's Dungeness crab salad with avocado and ginger vinaigrette was equally delectable."

  • "Chef is creative. Menu was superb. I tried the local fish (Rockfish) and the Asian-inspired preparation was delicious. My wife had the Maine lobster special and could not get enough. We will definitely dine here again when we return to the area."

  • "This sustainable seafood restaurant is located in a quiet commercial area and a few miles from touristy Cannery Row. Better quality and price than Fisherman's What area. I was celebrating a friend's birthday and was pleasantly surprise to see "happy birthday" printed on the menu above the date. Everything is fresh and local if possible. Try local Monterey calamari or Monterey spot prawns when in season. The wild king salmon I ordered was thick and moist fillet with a hint of citrus marinade. It was served over fresh corn with baby potatoes. My partner had several tender pieces of sturgeon over a medley of veggies with preserved lemons. The is a vegetarian dish and grass fed beef if you are not into seafood."
