A word from Passage to India - Bethesda
Passage to India serves a great selection of Indian food in an elegant decor, reminiscent of the dining rooms of the Maharajahs. Chef Sudhir Seth introduced the concept of Regional Cuisines of the Indian subcontinent and showcases food from all over India with local ingredients and home blended spices. The restaurant is located Bethesda's restaurant row, just 3 blocks from the Bethesda metro (Red Line).Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Only Indian restaurant that has all India regional dishes. Would love to see a selection/silver platter from all regions on the menu. The silver platter special provides diverse sample of flavors, meat or vegetarian, and four course meal (starter, appetizer, entree, dessert). Comfortable and not rushed to have a quiet dinner."

  • "We took my dad there for his birthday and we all loved it. The food was so delicious and full of flavor. I found this place using an online restaurant guide and I have never been disappointed. The food is great and service is impeccable."

  • "We meet friends there about every six months as it is a mutually convenient distance for both of us. They love the place and so do we. The staff recognizes us and gives us excellent service every time. We love it. Indian food is a favorite and they have a fantastic variety. Their tandoori chicken and salmon are the best. Kudos to the chef."

  • "The scallop appetizer was amazing. Our main entrees were delicious as well (mine was chicken masala and a lamb dish). I asked for mine spicy, and they did as some spice, but it wasn't spicy enough for me. I just know next time to tell them I am a 10 out of 10. Wine was reasonably priced. Staff was friendly and the service was great. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This was my first visit to Passage to India but it surely won't be my last. Beautiful decor. Impeccable service. Extensive menu. Extraordinary food. Here's a clue-- early on a snowy Sunday evening every single table was taken! Definitely need reservations."

  • "Will definitely come back. The waiters were great about accommodating my food allergies, and everything we had was so tasty! Would love to recreate the apple and sweet potato salad appetizer at home!"

  • "Went on a Friday night around 7 -- it wasn't super busy but wasn't quiet either, and was the perfect combination of laid back and more classy than we might normally go for to unwind after a week. I had the vegetable sampler platter and my husband had a paneer dish with naan. All the food we had was delicious. Service was great too -- we weren't rushed but if anything our servers were more prompt than necessary, as we were in no hurry whatsoever and could probably have lingered longer. I like how the menu is organized by region, and there seemed to be some unique dishes that I haven't seen elsewhere (being moderately familiar with indian cuisine). Fair prices for Bethesda and the fact that it's so delicious. We look forward to coming back!"

  • "Lamb chops were a little dry but everything else was perfect. A very good variety of foods from all regions of the sub-continent. The service was the highlight of our meal. Very knowledgeable and attentive but NOT overly attentive, let alone intrusive."

  • "The menu is unique for an Indian restaurant where they provide multiple entrees from each different region within India. The spices are very unique and bring out very flavorful tastes within a curry cream sauce of some type. In my opinion this is the best Indian restaurant in the Bethesda/Chevy Chase/Silver Spring region. The prices may be a bit higher than most of the other Indian restaurants but the food is typically outstanding. The decoration is beautiful and has many pictures of historical events. Some nights during the week are fairly quiet. Friday's and Saturdays tend to be very busy and you will need reservations like most restaurants in Bethesda. Good for a date place though not for romance but for an impressive meal."

  • "If you like Indian and appreciate the differences in regional cuisine, Passage to Indian is worth a look. Moderately priced with a varied menu, your curry needs will be met."

  • "I have always liked the food here. We had the samosa appetizer, chicken tikka masala, and lamb saag with lentils and garlic naan. It was all very good and the service was also very good. This is my fav Indian place in the area."

  • "Best meal we ever ate there. The selection if food is wonderful, the noise level was reasonable and the service terrific.. Much better than the last time we were there."

  • "I had not eaten at Passage to India before. The food, service and everything was great. Unlike some other Indian restaurants, the menu was well organized and comprehensible. The wine list was quite good. The chicken dish we had was one of the best chicken dishes I have ever had. The rest of the food was uniformly excellent."

  • "The ambiance, low noise level, and smooth service are very relaxing--more so than any other restaurant in Bethesda. However, the food is the most important reason for coming. The kitchen balances strong flavors with skill so that no single one overwhelms the others. We particularly liked the lentil, eggplant and lamb dishes we had on this visit. While the wine list is not extensive, it is well chosen and very reasonably priced. There are many good wines priced at less than $40."

  • "The dinner for my wife and myself for St. Valentine's Day was the best we've ever had there, and we have had many fine dinners with the two of us and with friends. The staff are both knowledgeable and friendly, and glad to answer questions about the components of the sauces and chutney."

  • "We went there with a Living Social deal, and it was very well worth it. I made a reservation at 8 PM in advance because we were there on Valentine's Day. The ambiance was nice, dimly lit (but just enough), romantic and had interesting decor. The service was quick to help and the wait for food did not take long. I would recommend for a special occasion, or if there were another deal."

  • "This restaurant has never disappointed. Always very clean, food is always very fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. Staff is always very helpful and well informed. It is the best in Bethesda for Indian food."

  • "Food from every region, prepared perfectly and served with a story (when asked). We had the calamari appetizer (not breaded and deep fat fried - but sauteed in a luscious spicy sauce), baby eggplants that were cooked whole in yet a different wonderful sauce, and then shrimp that had been cooked with ginger - a totally different flavor. The only improvement I can imagine would be to add fried spinach to the menu!! I'll be attending the Smithsonian Flavors of India event next week and plan to take a copy of the Passage menu with me."

  • "The restaurant staff was courteous, prompt and helpful. The food was good, but not spectacular. If you want Indian food, and a sampling of it from different regions, this is definitely a good place to go. Several reviews have cited it as being very expensive, but that was not our experience."

  • "It was our first visit after many years. There are many choices. Something for vegetarians, ditto for meat lovers or those who like fish or seafood. From the appetizers to the entrees, everything was delicious. Our server was excellent in terms of pacing the dishes and being attentive. The restaurant manager gave us directions to a nearby shop for gellato."

  • "We visited Passage to India on the evening of New Year's. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. The staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and were very good in explaining the dishes and with their suggestions. It is one of our favorite restaurants to go to... We will visit soon for some great tasting Indian food with a very different menu than all the other run of the mill restaurants. Very unusual dishes from all different parts of India."

  • "The best Indian food in DC and exceptional service. Very attractive dining room with lots of space between tables. Menu features dishes from north, south, east and west -- most unusual. Only negative is that it closes at 9:30!"

  • "What bought me to this place is a living social coupon. I'm glad I decided to give this place a try. It was a cozy place with friendly servers but even better food. The portions are a good sized and flavorful. Make sure to try the calamari."

  • "Used a LivingSocial deal to try out Passage to India, and we were not disappointed! Food was delicious, excellent variety, and came out quickly. Wait service was friendly. Our only complaint was that we needed change for the parking meter, and the restaurant would only change $1 for us...seemed a little strange, considering we were paying customers."

  • "Went in for lunch with a few friends. Everyone enjoyed their food. One guy LOVES Indian food and he was very satisfied. I don't know much about it, but had a great meal. I would recommend getting some naan bread. The service was great. So good that I sort of felt like maybe we should have dressed up a little more for the meal. They have very nice table wear and the servers are in nice suits. I would say this is a good place for people who really know & like Indian food and people that have no idea what to get and never eat it (myself). Very enjoyable experience. The ambiance/decor is nice as well."

  • "Passage to India has some of the best Indian food in Bethesda. It has a very traditional feel, which is nice, except the waiters are a little anachronistic in the way they deal with men and women (which feels a little weird)."

  • "Always interesting menu featuring choices from distinct regions of the Indian sub-continent; Can find in each of the four regional quadrants one or more tasty dishes of chicken, lamb, fish, and at least two outstanding vegetarian choices."

  • "This restaurant has a varied menu that provides an introduction to the regions of India. The cuisine is excellent and the service is efficient and attentive. Unlike many other modern restaurants, this one is fairly quiet so that one can carry out a conversation and the decor provides the illusion that one is in India."

  • "Excellent, better than ever. Quiet intimate setting for a wonderful meal and relaxed conversation. Make sure to have the spinach with black salt and the baby gourds."
