The Parrot Cage Restaurant is a creation and operation of the highly acclaimed Washburne Culinary Institute, one of the nation’s best and oldest cooking schools.The elegantly appointed gourmet dining restaurant features American French cuisine at affordable prices. It has received the industry's prestigious Zagat rating of "excellent or better" for three consecutive years and, its Sunday brunch has twice received the OpenTable Diners Top Choice award!

The Parrot Cage Restaurant is located in the South Shore Cultural Center -- a Chicago historic landmark and architectural treasure. It is positioned between Lake Michigan’s picturesque beach front and the lush greenery of the South Shore golf course.

  • "I've eaten at the Parrot Cage several times, always for dinner. The food has always been great. I invited a friend to join me for the highly rated jazz brunch. She had never been. The first disappointment was that the jazz is not there during the summer months (we were told this information is on the website). The next disappointment was that it is BYOB (we were told this information is on the website). The food was good. The best item was the peach cobbler made with fresh peaches."

  • "We had such a pleasurable night out and felt pampered in a low key gardeny setting right on the lake within a gorgeous historic building. Within the South Shore Cultural center which is a fantasticly decadent relic of the past is this resaurant opperated by students. The restaurant has the feel of a grand country club tea room with enormous windows overlooking the park and lake. Great food, great price and very pleasant atmosphere. Service with a personable southern touch."

Went for Sunday brunch, lots of well prepared food...oddly southern in theme with fried chicken, grits, peach cobbler. Very tasty, as much as you wanted to eat...great bargain. Service was a bit slow, but this is a culinary instructional program with students learning how to work in a commercial restaurant environment so that was understandable. What they lacked in attentiveness they made up for in enthusiasm."

  • "I have enjoyed dinner here often and, though the kitchen is usually slow, the food is very good and the staff attentive. However, my party was very disappointed with Sunday Brunch. Buffet is served from 1 to 3 p.m. and by 1:30 many dishes were low or empty and staff had to be notified. Omelets were made at another table so we placed orders while awaiting restocking of buffet table. Food was bland and mediocre and did not warrant the $20 per person set price. I love the ambience of this intimate room and will return for dinner but not lunch."

I always bring my friends and husband here and tell everyone about it because I LOVE the food, the decor and the Staff. I hope you expand!!!"

  • "The services was very good and the wait staff was very attentive. The food was very delicious with the exception of the side dishes. We ordered the roasted potatoes and dirty rice. The potatoes were not hot and a little hard and the dirty rice had very little flavor. Our appetizers, salads, and entrees were very delicious. Overall, the dining experience was excellent. The Parrot Cage is a hidden gem of the south shore area."

  • "We had 7:30 p.m. reservations for two and were seated immediately. The service was good and the food was decent. Since this is a teaching restaurant, I noticed that the available food items were a bit limited and light--in my opinion--on portions. If you are into the neuveau cuisine approach to dining, this is the place for you. Personally, I prefer large portions of food when dining out. With that being said, all courses were well arranged and the food, what there was of it, was very tasty. Next time I will try the standard menu instead of the special (in this case, Valentine's Day special) menu and maybe I will get more of the well prepared meal this place serves."

  • "Six of us went to dinner at the Parrot Cage for a GREAT night out. The steaks and Pork Chops were divine--melted like butter tender! The crab cakes, soup--chowder, sides, particularly the asparagus, were tasty, well-seasoned and appropriate temperature. The dessert offerings varied from a healthier fair to the truly decadent. An adequate wine list that was reasonably priced. Culinary students run this place? Really? Bon Appetite!"

  • "My husband and I have been coming to the Parrot Cage regularly since we moved to the area in 2010. It's an adorable place in the same location as the original Bird Cage restaurant that was part of the South Shore Country Club back in the day. The Washburne students are always eager to ensure a pleasant experience for all of us, and the food is delicious and plentiful. I went in with my family just last night for my birthday and took advantage of their 3 course meals for $30/person. There's nowhere else I know in Chicago where you can get amazing crab cakes, a grilled caesar salad, and a 15-ounce steak with two types of potatoes and asparagus on the side for just $30. Brunch is an amazing experience too, not to be missed!"

  • "I took my mom to the Parrot Cage for her birthday. The setting was nice and quiet. The music was soft, stimulating jazz. The food was outstanding. My mom ordered the ribeye steak prepared medium. The steak was perfectly seasoned and was broiled to medium standards. The steak rested on what appeared to be a 12 in platter. The steak filled the entire platter. I ordered tilapia which was also perfectly seasoned and prepared. The service can be brought up a notch but it is a training ground; so, with the affordable prices, the view, and a restaurant nestled in the South Shore Cultural Center it was definitely worth it."

  • "Had brunch yesterday at Parrot Cage. Always love the ambiance and setting. Brunch was a bit disappointing though. Our server, MaryLee could not have been nicer and more attentive, as was the hostess whose name I did not get. The problem though was in the execution. We had a 2pm reservation. When we got to the buffet line, the bacon was gone, the potatoes were gone, the chicken was down to just a couple of pieces. Others came in after us as well. They need to have a supervisor checking the chafing dishes on a regular basis so the food can be replenished."

Under cooked chicken Over cooked pasta- Mac & Cheese/Spinach Lasagne Very watery cranberry juice Carving station beef was also over cooked. No option for medium or medium well Service was very good. Server was friendly and attentive I would definitely recommend that there is a line to offer a donation to scholarship. In most case people that frequent these events would pay more than what is calculated by the school. It's is a turn off to me as an educator, to have it suggested that I only contribute 10% towards scholarship."

Overall service was slow even though there were only six other small tables with diners. Bar drink was not well made (martini). Would love to have been there during its heyday as a country club and building was in its prime."

Food was very good, although 3 of the 4 of us ordered the rib eye only to be told there were only 2 left (our reservation was for 7:15 pm). So 2 had salmon, which was very good."

  • "Dining at the historic old country club where the First Couple had their wedding is out of the ordinary. We got there a little early and strolled through the adjacent shoreline butterfly sanctuary. Surprising nature in the city's south side. The food was delicious and beautifully prepared, but the waitstaff needs more instruction or supervision. On arrival we were not greeted, and had to go looking for a maitre d to be seated. Overall, however, a great value."

The experience at that time was good, however, for some reason we did not return until recently, and I must say that the experience has gone from good to excellent. The greeter was very well dressed and quite professional, the wait staff was attentive, and the food was outstanding."

Many times as my party needed help the various servers would put their heads down and ignore you rather then serve you. I believe that you pay more for the service and attention you receive because many restaurants have good food. The way you are treated is Very important at least to me."
