A word from Parkside
Parkside, a gastro pub in Austin’s lively downtown area is home to chef/owner Shawn Cirkiel. Located directly on Sixth Street it offers a casual venue for his unpretentious, but bold take on New American Cuisine. Offerings include a sumptuous raw bar—which often carries as many as 16 varieties of oysters. While the menu changes seasonally—even daily--diners can enjoy both dramatic dishes like seared scallops with butternut puree, jalapeno, and lime or comfort basics such as a cheeseburger or fried egg sandwich.   • "We had been referred to Parkside from our hotel concierge. Restaurant was nice & the service couldn't have been better. We started with cocktails & oysters. They were delicious! We had some another night at Perlas--we both agreed these were better). My boyfriend ordered the lamb & I ordered the tuna (waiter highly recommended). Lamb was okay; not awful but not noteworthy. I ordered my tuna medium rare. It was delivered so cooked that I thought they had brought me chicken instead. I can't remember the last time I've ever sent food back but I couldn't eat it. The waiter was very kind & took it back. The manager came by to see hoew things were going. They brought me a second plate which was a bit better but still way overcooked."

  • "I came here with a party of 6 for a birthday dinner. We were seated, greeted immediately, and told that we made it right before happy hour was up. Drinks were inventive (aviation, strawberry sunshine, new old fashioned), and the apps delicious (classic ceviche, marrow bones, oyster platter). It was a nice bonus to nab those at reduced prices. Dinner made its way over, and everyone was pretty happy. I'm told that the cheeseburger (bar menu) is the best one in Austin. Others ordered scallops and creamed corn, pork jowl, leg of lamb, and tuna steak. For sides we got macaroni and cheese, asparagus, and Parkside fries."

  • "Had shrimp remoulade starter which was nice enough if a little bland. Main course was the leg of lamb, good taste but out of the 4 slices 2 were quite tough and one had quite a bit of gristly material, the other two were tender. Had requested asparagus instead of fennel and not only was the asparagus very nicely seasoned and grilled but it also was an extremely generous portion. Really enjoyed decor and ambiance, overally liked my dining experience but maybe just a little on the high side pricewise."

  • "Parkside had great food, service, and ambiance. The dishes were artfully prepared and gorgeous and obviously had a price to match-- which is why my friends and I were really put off by the sports bar like yelling match that was going on around the bar. I realize this is Texas and the Spurs were playing, but it was totally ridiculous. I couldn't even hear across the table. I would still recommend Parkside to a friend, but maybe advise them to make sure their dining plans didn't overlap any major sporting events."

  • "We were celebrating our sixth anniversary and decided to push the boat out. This place has a great buzz about it but its not exactly the spot for a romantic dinner. The cocktails were great, and so was the food in general apart from the lamb main course which was tough and dry. Overall a good experience and at $150 for dinner for two, we'll have to wait for another six years to return!"

  • "Marlene was our server, and she was one of the best I have ever had. She was stealthy, thorough, we never had a moment where we were waiting for her, yet she never hovered. That's a hard job, and she is a zen master. Our party of 7 included 3 older kids, and they were all happy with her suggestions and attention. She really elevated an already good experience. On the food, the crab fritters were piping hot, rich and perfect. My spring chicken was steaming hot, tender, and well seasoned. My daughter's bar steak was perfect for her - a small filet, extremely tender yet stil well done to her request. The goat cheesecake was superlative. It was an excellent meal we will happily recall."

  • "My husband and I split a half-dozen oysters. They were from British Columbia. I should have sent them back as they were no larger than a nickel in diameter, some as small as a dime. How they ever got out of the kitchen is puzzling. On a more positive note, we were initially going to be seated in a booth that was built around a column. As such, one side has very little clearance for whomever sits on that side. It needs to be reconstructed as only children or Mr. Bill could slide in comfortably. We were moved on request, although the first person I asked tried to argue that both sides of the booth had even clearance. They did not."

  • "Our party of four dined at Parkside on a recent Sunday evening. The restaurant is casual and very comfortable. The food was delicious and service was freindly and efficient. Our server even accommodated request for gluten free and dairy free versions of certain dishes. The most wonderful part of the dinner was dessert. We ordered four different dessert selections and each one was delicious and the presentation was amazing! Parkside is definitely a "must go" for me whenever I am in Austin."

  • "We had made a reservation for 6 pm for 2 people and were seated on time. Problem was the table was not in a good location--right next to the kitchen and heavy traffic area. I requested another table and although the restaurant was largely empty (it was still early), we were told there were no other tables available. So we just decided to have appetizers at the bar and then went somewhere else for dinner."

Started off with the oyster sampler and steak tartare. Ended up ordering every item on the raw bar. Bass was by far my favorite and the fluke was my wife's. Presentation was great. Flavors were amazing! Can't wait to go back and actually try their cooked options."

Having been to Uchi and Uchiko by that point, we figured Parkside would have tasty but fairly standard fare, expected the flavors to be the usual California-touch fare we know pretty well. We were pleasantly surprised by the flavors. My boyfriend's scallop dish in particular was insanely yummy. I liked that they accommodated my lo-carb, pescaterian diet by switching around some of the sides on my dish for those that looked more interesting and within my diet from other dishes. The mushrooms that accompanied my salmon dish were also remarkable."

  • "Parkside takes their food seriously yet the surrounding 6th Street heavy party/drinking vibe doesn't make for the ideal night out for a good meal setting. Nevertheless, the wait staff is attentive and helpful, the menu is interesting and varied (gnocchi and kale salad dishes were uniquely prepared). Proportions are on the smaller side, which isn't a bad thing. I had three appetizers to make a meal and felt comfortable -- far from overstuffed. The sound bounces around hard surfaces thus not a place for intimate mood/conversation. Yet, overall, this is a special place for foodies who are headed to a show at the Paramount or other entertainment spots conveniently located within a short walk. "

  • "My wife & I were looking forward to visiting Parkside for our wedding anniversary, and we are so glad we went! Because we began our dinner near the end of happy hour we were able to enjoy three half-price appetizers to start with - the crab fritters, ceviche (salmon I think), and a split order of a lovely Caesar salad. Our server was attentive without being intrusive, and friendly without being overbearing. Just perfect. She was kind enough to warn us that some patrons find the entrees run a little small, but we were more than fine! Perhaps big-chain portion sizes have spoiled most folk's expectations. After dessert & coffee, it was a wonderful anniversary dinner - more like a mini-vacation than just a trip to a restaurant."

  • "I went to Parkside on a recommendation. After exploring the menu, I realized they were known for their seafood/raw bar, and it does not disappoint. We ordered the small oyster platter, which comes with 9 oysters (3 different varieties) and 3 samples from the raw bar -- all chef's choice. It was amazing. My friend, who recently had a disappointing experience with oysters at another establishment, raved about these oysters. The wait staff is very knowledgeable as to where the oysters come from, how they'll taste, etc. Our waitress even recommended the order in which we should eat the oysters in order to experience the full tasting experience each oyster had to offer. I will definitely be returning."

  • "This place has never let me down or any of the many guests I've taken. We only did the small plates and appetizers, since there was 6 of us, but not one person would have had it any other way. The fritters, calamari, shrimp remoulade, sweetbreads, oyster platter, bone marrow, blond pate and steak tartar could not have beaten this night. Plus 3 desserts that were of epic scale. Great wine, great atmosphere and great company equaled a, well... great night!"
