Parallel 38 will be the first to create an atmosphere where all the iconic regions within this parallel will merge. It will not only be a place to relish great food, amazing wine and fantastic beverages, but will also serve as a destination to discover and share the pleasures of these unique regions. A contemporary yet casual environment will allow guests to explore the sometimes perplexing world of wine without pretension. Our wine program will offer over 70 wines by the glass, along with 100 bottles from handpicked boutique wineries with an assortment of over performing staples, exotic varietals and unexplored regions.Continued

  • "I will only write a review when a restaurant is really good or really bad. I'm pleased to report Parallel 38 is really good. My wife and I recently attended a wine dinner at this newly opened restaurant and the meal was excellent. We decided to return and to see if ordering off the menu would produce the same positive experience. Everything we had was terrific. I have not been a gnocchi fan but I am now. Highly recommend the small lamb chop, the shrimp, the panzanella and the white anchovies. This is a tapas restaurant so if you have ever written in a review "the portions are too small", it's probably not for you. The prices are reasonable for the portion size and food quality. Our server, Johnny, was excellent. Will return soon."

  • "Food was expertly prepared, drink list was fantastic! This is a tapas restaurant, so plates will be small (and prices somewhat higher for the relative portion size), but everything we had (besides the goat meatballs, which were dry) was delicious!!! I highly recommend the anchovies, sea bass, olive tapenade, any of the cheeses. It was a super-fun restaurant/atmosphere, and the service was AMAZING (a welcome change for normal Charlottesville Restaurants). It was a bit pricey, but pretty much on par with what you'll get at an upscale restaurant around town anyways. I would definitely recommend this place as a "must try once" at least! It definitely gives "Mas Tapas" a run for its money, without the wait and hard-to-find parking!!!"

  • "Parallel 38 offered a great array of vegetable and protein dishes. I especially enjoyed the zucchini & tomato dish with lebneh as well as the lamb tartar. I would also highly recommend the lemon olive oil cake! Personally, I would reserve this restaurant for special occasions as it is a bit pricey."

  • "This is a tapas place so the two of us had maybe 6 plates + dessert - shrimp + chorizo, lamb chops, scallops, etc. I can honestly say each and every plate was delicious. I didn't care for dessert, though, which was a goat cheese creme brulee. It seemed from the menu like they were trying a little too hard to squeeze the Mediterranean theme in. The poached pears apparently have dehydrated olives, etc. I do like a savory dessert, but the goat cheese overpowered the custard. The place is in the movie theater shopping center on 29, so the atmosphere is miles away from being on the downtown mall, but I think the quality of the food makes up for that. There were a couple tables of groups and the set up seems good for that FYI."

  • "We visited on a rather quiet Tuesday evening and had a nice meal. The wine list was was decently extensive and had more than the usual cast of characters. The Greek whites we chose turned out to be very nice. The special soup was a tad salty for my taste but had excellent flavor regardless. In my mind the labneh stole the show. Very attentive waitstaff make this a nice spot to share small plates."

  • "I really enjoy Parallel 38. I've only been there twice now - but the food is very tasty and the atmosphere is such that it allowed three women (in reunion mode) to converse most of the night without much interruption. (Admittedly, I left an additional tip because we stayed for about another hour after we paid the bill - while we noshed and drank water.) The only complaint I have is that I would like to see a larger variety of wine by the glass (ala the former Sips on the Downtown Mall). Too many Italian reds. I understand the focus is on the 38th parallel - please provide us with more variety. Otherwise, a wonderful experience!"

  • "I really didn't know what to expect on my first visit, but I was totally blown away by the amazing flavors of my dishes. After my first bite, I melted. I didn't want the meal to end! The service and decor were the cherry on top of my experience. I will absolutely recommend this restaurant to all my friends!"

  • "We had a Gintonic, which came with a beautiful charred orange, and a Jamey was a Ginger, which was the perfect modern whiskey cocktail. We ate in the dining room which was cozy and much more intimate than I expected. The room has great energy but we had no issue speaking to each other. The Wine list is amazing with selections from all over the world ranging from $7 to $70 a glass but it is the FOOD that steals the show. Everything was delicious and the next thing was always better than the last. Standouts would be the gnocci, gambas, and the most amazing pork belly I have ever had. Combine all this with phenomenal, sincere service and you not only have our new favorite tapas restaurant but possibly our new favorite restaurant overall."

  • "The food at Parallel 38 was excellent, and my two friends and I really enjoyed that aspect of our dinner. We were all surprised, however, at how small the portions were, given the prices. I went with a friend who is Spanish and a friend who has lived in Europe for several years, and I think it is telling that they thought the prices were high for the size of the portions. Additionally, the service was friendly but mediocre. The model of our waiter entering orders on a tablet and an expeditor bringing the food worked well, but the waiter was not as attentive as we would have liked. I would recommend this to someone looking to have a pleasant, slow evening out and where the occasion merits spending $75-$100 on dinner for 2 plus 1 or 2 drinks."

  • "This is a small plates Mediterranean restaurant. The interior is stark, loud, but the service was excellent. Most of the dishes were interesting but the flavoring was bland. The serving portions were small even for small plates. Compare to Mas, the tapas restaurant across town, Paralled 38 does not give you much for your money."

  • "We were just in town for the evening to attend a sporting event the next day at UVA. Staying close by turned to Open Table to see what was close and casual. The claim of extensive wine list (it is) and the Tapas Style approach to the menu caught our attention. Reservations were easy and so was parking. The whole concept of the 38th Parallel was fitting and perfect. The selection of wines and food from the 38th, with a strong influence from the Mediterranean region, worked. Very interesting, eclectic mix. Our server was just 5 stars, and was so friendly and helpful. The same is true of the owner, and in house wine sommelier. Knowledgable, friendly, proud, warm and engaging. He's a pro, and it show."

The wine list was exquisite and the service, except for a delay in my wife receiving her entree, was outstanding. The building design is the popular warehouse style. So if you looking for a good time with a bunch of friends, then this is the place. But if you prefer a quite, romantic place, this not the place."

  • "The menu was very limited for a small naltrexone restaurant. We ordered the meatballs and they were over cooked and rubbery, the octopus was okay, not very seasoned. Everything else was okay, nothing was great. It seemed very expensive, the decor is very simple, seemed to be lacking something. The menu gave no descriptions with the wines so I asked our server who said he didn't know. He also kept coming by to tell us how needy his other tables were and how busy he was, it was very odd. Our food came out so fast that we were felt rushed because he table was so small and they kept asking if we were done with our other food, even when we still had some on the serving plates."

  • "This was my first time at Parallel 38. Host was very gracious, we had reservations and were easily seated. We were meeting u with a friend and had to wait a little bt. Our waiter was good, not great. Asked if we wanted to order a wine, and whle we were looking at the menu taking a sec, just walked off (didn't say, I'll be back or anything to that effect). Cheese plate was small but good. Humous and red pepper appetizers were very good, not great. OK for a post movie quick bite, but doesn't beat Mas or Bang for my buck."

  • "Did not check out menu prior to coming which we should have, the food was not really what we liked and we were hoping for more of a meal. The waiter was nice and professional but probably could have helped sell us on the food better. We really wanted the mozzarella salad but the mozzarella balls were not set enough to be served yet which was a disappointment for us. The hummus was abit sweeter than we are use to."

  • "The food was decent, but don't expect to fill up without several plates per person. The wine list is extensive but very over priced. For example, we paid $37 for a bottle of Zin that I saw at the wine store for $10. I expect to pay a premium, but 3.7x seems like robbery. The atmosphere is very open and modern. I agree with the other reviews in that the pork belly is excellent and probably my most memorable part of the evening. Overall the experience was good but not great."

  • "I would highly recommend this place to food and wine lovers alike! The wine list is second to none. Most of the wine is available by the glass which is great, especially in a Tapas style restaurant where you want to have several different drinks and several dishes to try. If you are a wine novice like me, don't worry! The wait staff is very helpful and the owner is a professionally trained and very knowledgeable sommelier who will help to make selections! The dishes are simple but absolutely delicious, particularly the Arni Psimeno - a section of a rack of lamb. Overall, I would highly recommend this as one of the best places in town!"

  • "It doesn't have an extensive tapas menu, but through electronic ordering in the hands of its servers it offers an advantage over other similar themed restaurants. The service was friendly and efficient and capable of offering good suggestions based upon food preferences - spicy, seafood vs. meat, etc. They were more than willing to have us order a couple of items at a time stopping back to see how we liked the current plates, suggesting others, and then placing orders for additional tapas. That helped us pace ourselves and alter what we had originally thought we wanted as we went through the evening. It is a little loud, but if you work with the server I think you'll enjoy the overall experience."

We hardly ever get a night out and don't like to feel rushed when we do. We understand they're new and will give a second chance to hope they've worked out the newness bugs"

  • "The plates seemed a bit small, even for tapas. Although the price was certainly reasonable and the food was tasty, we weren't exactly blown away by what we had ordered thus far and opted not to get more than 7 tapas (we were 3 girls). I would recommend for a small group on a not so empty stomach. Nice atmosphere and friendly waiter, however, which certainly helped make it into a very nice dinner!"

  • "Be warned -- you can't read the menu and understand it -- you'll have to experience it. The wait staff is helpful. It is an intriguing concept, and an unusual dining experience. More for foodies, and the wine selections were better than most restaurants. We like a softer touch to our surroundings. But the bar scene looked active, and that might attract some regulars. The food: The Motsarela was lacking something, like a real mozzarella taste. The Htipiti was bland. The Labneh was good. The Beikon was delicious. The Lomo Serrano was quite good. In fairness, this place probably needs to be visited several times before you conclude how much you might like it. There is a diversity of menu selection that needs to be appreciated over time."

  • "We ordered a meat and cheese plate with a bottle of wine to start, but when food was delivered, it was not what we'd ordered. Our waiter never checked back with us. After about 20 minutes, we finally flagged down another server to go retrieve him. He apologized, said he would send over the GM to speak with us, but the manager never appeared and we left. I really can't fairly rate the food, as I had only a slice of ham and a piece of cheese, but the service was incredibly disappointing. Also - no additional bread provided for meat & cheese, so I am not sure what we were supposed to spread the condiments on? The restaurant is extraordinarily loud, difficult to carry on a conversation."

  • "Very tasty small plates allow you to try a myriad of things. While our server was taking our order, our first plate arrived because she had entered it electronically! Brilliant! Then the plates started arriving regularly, included 3 or 4 we had not ordered. If we weren't careful, we may have eaten those too. Atmosphere is loud/energetic - but we sat in the middle of the restaurant not too disturbed by the rest of the crowd. Drinks came to us very slowly; server said the bar was busy - but would've been nice to have a glass of wine before all the plates arrived. Dessert (the pear) was not good. We returned it after one nibble. I want to emphasize, though, the small plates were remarkable, and many are vegetarian friendly."

  • "P38 just opened a week before we dined there. They had just rolled out the full wine list, not too long but with a good variety. The food comes on small plates so there is a good chance to sample. The foods are a bit different so it is more for the person that likes to explore new flavors and preparations. The pork belly melted in our mouths. You have to like olives to eat all of them if there is only 2 of you. The service was very good, it felt upscale but still a dress casual environment. Our server was appropriately attentive and informative."

  • "We were surprised at how smoky it was when we first arrived (5:45 reservation) - the atmosphere is what I would call "nouveau industrial" - high exposed ceilings, open kitchen... I think they could use some better ventilation in the kitchen. However, that was the only down side of the evening. Their wine list is extensive (especially by the glass) and when the server was unable to help me in choosing a wine, she sent the sommelier who suggested several nice wines based on my specifications. We ordered 8 dishes between us, most notable were the cauliflower (dry spiced and roasted), trout and the pork bellies (you MUST try them!) - but all of the dishes were wonderful. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Great dining experience. Food was really good and the menu offers something different from the usual staff you find around. I think this is a very brave choice in a world of fettucini Alfredo, burgers and cesar salads. Everything has a very balanced taste with no single ingredient overwhelming your palate (such as garlic). Good job!"
