  • "Paragon has the best views and excellent drinks, but dont expect a gourmet meal here. Best to stick to burgers, fries. Everything else is a disaster. Service is pleasant and professional. Too bad hotel and chefs can't produce quality meals."

  • "How can the Claremont Hotel be overlooked...when it has everything! Even validated parking for the busy UC Berkeley area. I would like to keep this place a secret, so there would always be room for us!"

  • "I was visiting from Texas and wanted to return to The Paragon. Once again, the food was delicious, the outdoor seating comfortable, and the view breathtaking. If you are in the East Bay area, it is the perfect place to dine and enjoy the beautiful bay scene without the crowds and traffic of San Francisco."

  • "I hate to write this review, this had been one of my favorite restaurants since it opened. The original chef was excellent, the food was great quality and tasted great! The last few years the food has been terrible, lacking in flavor, quality and decent preparation. I keep trying hoping they get a new kitchen staff and I am more and more disappointed each time I go. Saturday was my last trip to Paragon. A friend and I ordered a ceasar salad, burger and mac and cheese to split. The kitchen split all of our food for us. The salad was split and was so small that we each got about 8 bites of salad (a dinner salad is much larger than that), the burger was so well done it was inedible and the mac and cheese was completely flavorless."

  • "Food, view and ambiance were all amazing! Service was a bit slow, but the server was kind."

  • "Great dinner, great service, good ambience, nice place BUT very noisy and surprisingly after pay a big bill also we had to pay parking..."

  • "Upon arriving, the glass door was locked, and so had to walk through the hotel, as did others. Hostess saw it happen to others, but they did nothing. Staff was unengaging. Waiter seemed to be going through the motions....didn't suggest anything or note any specials. Nice view but I got to a restaurant for the food and service, so unless forced to, likely wont go back."

  • "We did not enjoy the food on this occassion and will think twice before returning."

  • "The hostess was not too friendly. She didn't smile. We asked for a table by the window as we specified in the reservations we made a month in advance. She looked at us like we were bothering her and said she would't have a window table for quite a while. We asked to speak to a manager. He magically found a window table within minutes. Our waiter was dry. No personality to speak of but luckily the food was good and the view was incredible. Wouldn't recommend unless you are going for a special occasion or a romantic evening. Would have been a better experience if the restaurant had better people."

  • "I invited friends to come over from San Francisco to join us for lunch. Big mistake. After getting a babysitter and meeting up with our friends, we arrived at the Paragon hoping to be seated on the outdoor deck. They had no outside seating and sat us at the one table with no view. We sat there for about 15 minutes just waiting for water. Finally someone brought water, but no one took a drink order or checked in with us. One of our party actually had to get up and find someone to take our order. We had to go find someone anytime we needed something. The food was fine, but the service was just indifferent. I was embarrassed that I had asked my friends to go there. Only go if you know you'll have an outside table--and plenty of time to wait."

  • "Burger is one of best around. One spicy cocktail was outstanding, another one was bland in comparison. Beautiful deck with lovely view."

  • "The food was quite good, but it took too long to get it! We were unable to order dessert and coffee because the lunch took far too long. There was really no excuse for this; there were enough servers and it was not too crowded; they were just not paying attention. A shame."

  • "I suppose a restaurant that bills itself as a "gastropub" is being honest, but still, for being at the Claremont Hotel, and for the prices, things could have been better. The best thing about this place is the view - and we had excellent service from our waiter. The food was good and adequately sized. It is not an extensive menu, but an interesting selection of items. So what didn't I like? The place felt like a cafeteria to me - laminate tables close together, and for most of the room, only one person can see the stunning view. TV on in the bar and hard to miss from most of the seats. A better bet would be to eat outside, thus avoiding the cafeteria feel and concentrating on the food and the view."

  • "We had a lovely dinner at Paragon. The food was very good, attentive service and overall a great experience! It was cloudy so we didn't see a sunset, but usually the sunsets are beautiful from the restaurant!"

  • "We sat outside . The weather was perfect we could see the bay bridge. The waiter was ok. But the food and drinks were great !! All together a great night"

  • "Took my friend there to celebrate her birthday. I thought it being in the Claremont Hotel it would be something special. It was not! the décor was cold and uninviting. The food was more than just okay, but the soup wasn't hot. The service was very poor. I don't know if there was more than one server, but we had to wait quite a while between our entrée and getting a desert menu."

  • "I look forward to date nights at the Paragon. The view is unbeatable, and I enjoy the bar area. The bartenders are friendly and make a great Sidecar! The service was excellent on this visit. Everyone (staff included) just seemed to be having a good time. The menu is limited though it's all delicious. The burger and garlic fries are among my favorites."

  • "I found the food and beverages to be mediocre at best and the drinks in particular to be way over-priced. A basic Cosmopolitan with the cheapest 'well' vodka was $13.00. This is more than one would pay at even the most high-end Chicago restaurants - definitely the highest that I have ever paid. The food was less than memorable. The $19.00 parking fee did not add to the experience. While the view from the restaurant is quite stunning, there are several other vantage points in the area that offer the same view at a far lower cost."

  • "Bland, overpriced food. Inattentive waiter. But the view was nice. If you're looking for a special occasion place, look elsewhere."

  • "We ar a small group who go out to lunch once a month. W e ad a reservation prior to Christmas that had to be cancelled. We would like to have had lunch in the Meritage Dining Room. The Paragon had more of the atmosphere of a sports bar."

  • "Dinner prix fixe at Paragon was spectacular... Starter Chicory & Shaved Fennel Salad Blood oranges, feta cheese & tarragon dressing Entrée Braised Lamb Shoulder parsnips, turnips, cippolini onions & French breakfast radishes Dessert New York Cheesecake with chocolate honey sauce My waiter traded our the cheesecake for and had the Key lime pie with macadamia nut crust...excellent!"

  • "The bartender and waiters were exceptionally helpful. This is a fantastic place for a date. Just bring warm clothes, as the outdoor heaters don't work very well."

  • "Whether business or personal, I love Paragon for lunch, especially on a clear day when the views are spectacular. The food and service are consistently high quality, too."

  • "Five ladies met for lunch. It was just "O.K." Food was nothing special. Any one of us could have made the same thing at home easily. Small portions, overpriced too. Service was good. The reason we went there had to do with nostalgia. We'd spent many wonderful evenings at the hotel in years past, dancing, attending weddings, New Year's Eve, etc. The spectacular view was the draw. You can see the Bay and the entire San Francisco skyline from the terrace. Everything was fine but did not rise above any place we could have gone to lunch in Lafayette and Walnut Creek. Two of our party came some distance to meet (Santa Rosa and El Dorado Hills) and very much enjoyed the view. I would give the food and service a B-."

  • "Love to go to this place. Only for special occasions because it can get a bit pricey, but well worth it. Food and service is great!"

  • "Unfortunately, we did not have the best experience this time. The table next to us had parents that didn't care what the kids did - like coming over to our table and trying to take our food. The waitress had too many tables and our food came out cold. We've had better experiences there, but this time it was not good. Maybe next time."

  • "I really like the Paragon. Its's got a great bar and big screen TVs. Even though it can get a bit noisy, it still offers a cozy ambience for a romantic dinner for two or a table of friends. The burgers are delicious, especially with the potato fries poutine. The best part is the panoramic views of San Francisco Bay."

  • "The chowder was ho-hum, the new york was cooked as specified but was mostly gristle and bone. Baked potato was huge, and dry. Wines OK. Their "special" desert was chef made ice cream sandwich which was hard as a rock, even when the ice cream had melted. Creme Brulee was thickened with flour. Not my best experience at The Claremont."

  • "We went to Paragon recently for a special family lunch. In particular, we were looking forward to the mussels and raw oysters. Everyone was very satisfied with what they ordered, whether it was a standard burger or the seafood. It was a very nice experience."

  • "there was virtually no nod to the holidays in any of the decor....the menu is limited.....the food indifferent at best.....my salad was drowning in "green goddess" (who even eats that stuff anymore!) the service also indifferent.....it is, in essence, a (very) overpriced coffee shop......"

  • "It took 10 minutes for someone to take our drink and appetizer order at the rather unpacked lounge. Our dinner waiter wreaked of stale cigarettes and had a dumpy appearance. He then gave our order to the wrong table, but did not inform us of his error until he arrived with our food nearly an hour after we placed our order (again the restaurant was not packed). He did offer us two house reds for his error, but this just doesn't change our experience. I have worked as a waiter myself understand the job and can appreciate the position. This reflects upon the management as well as the waiter. I would not go out of my way to dine there again."

  • "The service is great. The food was okay. I had been here a few years ago for dinner and it was AMAZING and I would have totally eat here again based on that experience. This time the food was well, but the flavor profile that was there last time was not there. Also, I went for lunch. So maybe there are different chefs."

  • "We thought it would be festive and fun to have lunch at the Claremont Hotel during the holidays so we made a reservation at Paragon. We found the experience to be lackluster. The menu was OK, but the presentation of the food wasn't great. One sandwich was dry and fell apart. Would have been better executed in salad form. The service was just so-so. Nice but not happy and fun. I doubt that I'd go back until summer when you can sit out on the deck and really enjoy the view"

  • "Five of us came to the Claremont from Redwood City specifically for a sunset dinner/Birthday celebration. We were not disappointed by either the hotel staff or the restaurant staff. Both were helpful and friendly without being intrusive or overbearing. The sunset view during drinks was breathtaking. The food during dinner was among the best we ever had! This experience will certainly bring us back again. We're even thinking of an overnight at this Gem!"
