Diner Reviews
  • "Not only the best crab cakes in Baltimore, but a complete menu of outstanding food. This time I treated myself to the crab Imperial. An amazing meal filled with mostly lump crab meat, seasoned to perfection, topped with a creamy sauce and baked to a light brown glaze. It had to weigh nearly a pound. The end of the meal was complemented by a serving of one of the best rice puddings I've had and tasty coffee."

  • "Don't believe any other restaurant who says they have the best crabcakes in Baltimore. The service here is very attentive. If you want a more casual atmosphere (rather than tablecloths), go to the Sports Bar. Most of the menu is served there."

  • "Another enjoyable meal at Pappas. Nothing fancy and a little tight on seating when busy, but good food at good prices."

  • "The food was outstanding from the broiled seafood platter to the fried oysters. We have never had a bad experience at Pappas. Their drinks are excellent and reasonably priced. Waiter was attentive and friendly."

  • "When I come to Baltimore Pappas's is the 1st place I go for a crab cake. They never disappoint, and the friendly staff makes the meal even more enjoyable."

  • "This popular spot was busy, but did more than an adequate job. The crab cakes are the best in a city known for crab cakes."

  • "Walking inside I had a feeling that this place would be like many other "greatest crab cake ever" white linen table clothed restaurants in MD. Full to the brim with a crowd of 50 year olds and up we stuck out as a group of 4 in their 20s. We were seated approximately 15 minutes past reservation time, which is not a big issue. Waitress was nice enough, not exceptional service but she was around. Crab cake was okay, nothing special and I have definitely had better - but there was little filler involved that was a plus. Pappa's salad was good, no complaints. Wife got a turkey/bread/gravy type deal that wasn't very good; came out with cold potatoes and dry turkey. We were ushered out with multiple "have a good night"s, we left unimpressed."

  • "We heard how wonderful Pappa's crabcakes were and we went specifically for them. We were told about the $9.99 special w/2 sides. So we went just for that. When we were waited on the server told us the special was only $2.00 off and that they didn't offer the $9.99 special in years. When our friends joined later they said that the $9.99 special was offered in the bar only and that they had taken advantage of it a few weeks earlier. Our server did not mention this; I think any good server would normally clear up the confusion since I asked specifically about that special. I felt mislead and taken, I was very upset as $2.00 off made our crabcakes $14.99 I think big difference for those on a budget."

  • "My husband, his 95 year old aunt & I have gone here on many occasions. Their price of $18.99 for their excellent crabcake, two sides and hot bread is quite a good bargain. They even serve a cucumber salad before anything else (free) and it's quite refreshing and gets the palate ready for the rest of the meal. At least a few times on every occasion I eat one of their crabcakes, I get a huge bite of crab lump that I shake my head at in disbelief. And, all the rest of the bites are substantial and tasty as well. The sides are very healthy portions and the vegetables are all fresh- but as a fan of al dente veggies, even I find that their zucchini and green beans could benefit from a little longer in the pan. We all highly recommend Pappas'."

  • "As usual, Pappa's crab cakes were as big as softballs and very flavorful. The crab cakes are so good, it's difficult to order anything else; even though their menu is very extensive. Our waitress was attentive and our service was great as always."

  • "Pappas has the best crabcake for the money in my opinion: not to mention a great fra diablo. My wife and I go there at least once a month and have never been disappointed. I recommend the home made rice pudding."

  • "Recently had a special dinner for our friends. Our 3rd time at Pappas. We were seated, ordered our Cocktails. Asked for water, Server brought a tray with 9 glasses of water when 1/2 of the tray spilled over our friend. We gave her our napkins and he brought her some paper napkins. Her chair was changed. He was very sorry, but our friend was still wearing wet clothes. Our dinner was served and same friend opened a bottle of ketchup everywhere. We gave our table napkins, she had to use the bathroom to wash her shirt and returned wet unable to finish her dinner . Dining room manager was rounding on our experience and explained what happened. Our friends left early. We had a stack of dirty napkins on table never removed."

  • "Searched online reviews & websites for best crabcakes in MD. Pappas' we're large, colossal chunks of crab meat, no filler! Delicious & filling! Wonderful service. Looking around I could tell the restaurant prides itself on consistency of great, quality food and service! Go there! Also- able to order some to ship home. Awesome!"

  • "Brought two out-of towners for the "best Baltimore cabcakes". The WERE good but we were served a little over an hour from the time we ordered---the soup came when we were almost finished our entree---forgot a salad-------not their best night. nor ours."

  • "We celebrated grandmother's 80th birthday. The table was reserved for us and we were seated right away. Service was excellent. We had one of the best servers I have ever had anywhere. Crab cakes were exceptional. Steamed shrimps were big and succulent. Linguini Alfredo was average. Seafood Combo Fra Diablo was very spicy even for a jalapeño lover. It's a great place to go for a good meal at reasonable price."

  • "The food at Pappas' is as always good, but the service has become really awful. Waited 10+ minutes for anyone to come by the table. Food did not take too long, but any follow up service was non existent. We got a bowl of butter but no rolls. Had to ask a passing bus girl for water. Waitress seemed to forget we were her table. Finally asked another staff member to take our payment. Very disappointing. As a long time patron, I really hope it improves."

  • "We took a group of 4 to Pappas this past weekend and were just as pleased as ever. Their Maryland crab cakes were superb, and the stuffed shrimp was also excellent. This is a family business and they take pride in getting everything right. We ate upstairs this time, and enjoyed a quieter atmosphere and more room between tables. I'm sure we will be going back again to Pappas. They can ship their dishes all of the US in case you can't there in person."

  • "Baltimore's best crab cakes - end of discussion. Lumps and more colossal clumps of crab meat just held together for a fabulous local culinary experience."

  • "We travel about 80 miles to enjoy dinner at Pappas' Restaurant. This occasion was my wife's birthday. Everything was great. My only disappointment was that soft shell crabs were not in season. Crab cakes and salmon were masterful. Service was friendly and attentive given the fact that the house was packed. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This was the first time my husband and I brought someone else to dine with us at Pappas and it went well. A friend of mine was in from out of state and she wanted a good Maryland crab cake. She got one. She said it was the best crab cake she ever had. I enjoyed mine as well (no surprise there as it is all I ever order). My husband ordered the veal. He liked his entree very much and rated it a little over 9 out of 10. I think my friend and I both would rate our entrees a 10, so the average (rounded up) is close enough that I gave the food a 5. The service was excellent. The ambiance in the first floor dining area is terrible, hence the rating of 3. They should use the upstairs instead of packing everyone in like sardines on a Friday eve."

  • "Had not been in years and had remembered it being better. In great need of some updating! The service was horrendous. Started at the bar because they were running late on reservation. Sat 10 minutes without even bartender eye contact. Then we were called and sat 10 minutes again do for server who never smiled or apologized for the latemess. They were out of our first two choices after we ordered not before. Food took 45 minutes for two people. Never got bread for water and had to ask for cocktail for crab cake and ketchup for fries or drink refills. The crab cake was ok but advertised at half pound. NO WAY!! Very disappointing for a restaurant that has been in business so long. I guess it was just a bad night."

  • "We went there for the crab cakes, but I succumbed to temptation and got the seafood platter. All kinds of seafood, all excellent. Nice ambiance. Moderate noise level. My only quibble with them is that the cocktail sauce was a bit watery and not spicy enough."

  • "This is our fallback restaurant for family occasions and lunch and dinner with mom. The food is conventional but excellent Maryland fare. Their crab cake can't be bested by any other restaurant in town. We must dine here 5-6 times per month. And I need to mention that the drinks are very good and reasonably priced - essential when dining with the in-laws."

  • "The food was very good. It was a special occasion, it was my Mom's 71st birthday. I called the restaurant the day before to request that a piece of cheesecake be brought out to her and it never happened. The lady taking the request asked for the birthday girls name, so I assumed it would be taken care of. The service was fair."

  • "My family has dined here over the years and we came back over the weekend the food and drinks were great. My service however i ended up a little disappointed because i asked for water several times but did not receive any with my meal. it did not take away from wanting to come back just hoping for better service when i ask for it. The renovation over the years really made the restaurant look new and inviting. "

  • "This is a neighborhood restaurant with, i imagine, lots of locals. We were interested in a nice meal for a recent graduate. As a party of seven we put the wait staff to task and they were up for the challenge. The food, overall, was very good. I would recommend trying the stuff mushroom appetizer - that was awesome. They couldn't service ribs as they were out and our Gluten Free member had to work through some options as the menu wasn't setup for Gluten free. The wine list is pretty weak (for Cab's anyway) but the selections that were there were priced nice. Crab cakes were a hit, but, the mushroom appetizer is the way to go to just get a taste as they don't offer a crab cake appetizer."

  • "We enjoyed our crab cakes, cole slaw and potatoes, but the peas tasted like canned peas. The warm rolls were average. Tables were very close together and we found it difficult not to hear everyone's conversations. Service was very good and everyone was very polite."
