Diner Reviews
  • "Been to this restaurant five times and food consistently good with helpful fun service. Informal atmosphere"

  • "The menu is small but every dish is something special. They really know their wine and are very helpful. The wait staff and chefs love what they do."

  • "Menu is small and changes daily with only a few selections in each category but everything we tried was delicious."

  • "We went there prior to going to the Pantages Theatre show. The food was great, with innovative combination of ingredients. The distance is only a few long blocks to the theatre so you would not want to walk to it."

  • "Dinner for two was wonderful. Food - hanger steak and Halibut was cooked to perfection. Terrific wine list."

  • "You could walk past this place a thousand times and not even notice that it's there. But is you do venture in then you're in for a treat. The decor is very shabby. But this seems to be by design. The focus here is the food."

  • "The food is absolutely fresh and deliciously prepared. You feel as fi you're sitting in the ckef's private kitchen. I'm very impressed with personable charm of the entire staff."

  • "Took a business associate here who was a vegetarian. Sometimes vegetarian meals can seem like an afterthought but this one was excellent and well thought out. My meal (not vegetarian ) was also delicious. I love this place."

  • "The food is consistently good, but I am sorry that they have gone away from the fixed price formula. It makes it a far less reasonable evening than it used to be!"

  • "We've long been fans of Papilles - the food, the staff and the unpretentious bistro atmosphere. A few months ago they opted to move away from their prix fixe menu onto a more standard pricing model. This change allows them to offer up some additional dishes which wouldn't have fit into the old model. The food was as good or better than ever while the plating was a even more attractive than before. Not fussy, just pretty plates of fully flavored bistro food. This time, she had a salad with octopus, crab and duck to start while I loved their house-made head cheese with pickled vegetables. Both delicious in very different ways. For our main courses, halibut for one and lamb loin on lentils were fab. Highly recommend Papilles to anyone."

  • "So if you're into food, this is a cool place. A limited, focused menu, prepared just for you, with care. It feels different than most places because of the small setting and individualized service. I think they prepared my lamb sous vide style, and it was cooked just right. The fish and steak were both great, too (I tried them all), and the starters were interesting and great tasting, too! The only real unfortunate part is where they are located. In a dumpy corner on Argyle and Franklin, across from the gas station to the south and a mechanic to the east. But they dressed up the inside pretty well, so you didn't feel like you were in a crappy corner off the 101. I will go again. Yes, it's pricey, but really good!"

  • "Although the menu selection was very limited at this hard to find hole in the wall, Papilles definitely delivered a fantastic culinary experience. When one thinks French food, they think small plates, but that was not the case with Papilles. My family all left very full after only an appetizer, main course and dessert. The quality of the food was also excellent, with perfectly cooked meat on every plate. Wine selection was also extensive, but I would have liked a list. This was a great find after a long day at Universal Studios."

  • "Would recommend Papilles for great food , intimate setting and casual dining with friends. Menu is small and thus Food is made to perfection. Very reasonably priced for the calibre of food."

  • "We're regulars at Papilles, but hadn't been in since the recent remodel, and all I can say is "good job!" The lighter walls suit the small dining room better than the previous dark ones, the new ceiling takes me back to Paris, and the new lights are a kick (although perhaps dim them just a bit?). What's that - the food? Oh, yes. It's Spring, so the fiddleheads lured us in, and the asparagus with bernaise kept us happy. Chef Tim knows how to cook octopus - if all you've ever had was a rubbery chewy mess, come here and be amazed."

  • "The food was awesome and the service was great. It is a good place to dine in a special occasion. It was our first time at the restaurant and we will definitely go back. We highly recommend this place, and the butterscotch pot de creme dessert was Amazing."

  • "After hearing from numerous friends what a gem of an establishment Papilles is, my girlfriend and I decided to make a visit with a friend who was visiting from New York. While the ambiance isn't that of any highbrow Hollywood restaurant, we were absolutely blown away by the food. The menu is small, but in the end both the simple menu and cozy ambiance made the meal that much more enjoyable. Highly recommend."

  • "Good for small groups. Food was excellent. Menu is limited but that's ok because it was all great! It was like eating dinner in someone's home. The wines we drank were excellent as well. Will definitely go back."

  • "Our waiter was on it!! He knew that if we were eating at 6pm that we were probably going to the Pantages for the 8pm show. Yep. The food was lovely, the ambiance is NYC french and the desserts were probably to die for if we had indulged. We were too full sadly. We'll go back, especially if we are going to the Pantages again."

  • "The food was excellent... Cordon Bleu quality, but the menu was fixed (only two choices in each category). Excellent wine list and a very friendly staff. On the whole, a very enjoyable dinning experience."

  • "Expensive night, but worth it. Would not recommend to someone interested in a "scene," but to someone who really cares about good food and wine. Our server was great at recommending an incredible bottle of wine, and the service throughout the night was very smooth. He faltered slightly in failing to address both my boyfriend and I, possibly because he assumed that my boyfriend would be paying. The food is what made the experience here. We will be back."

  • "I would never have thought that such a wonderful little restaurant would be in a strip mall next to the on ramp to the 101 Freeway. The food is always amazing. The menu, which undergoes changes frequently, is refined without being pretentious. The atmosphere is very intimate and even when the restaurant was full I had no difficulty maintaining a conversation with the other people at our table. No one had to yell. The chefs are right there and interact with customers in a very friendly way, particularly once you've gone in there a few times. It feels like they are genuinely happy to see you. Our server knew his wine pairings and was able to guide us on the menu when we torn between some options. I would whole heartedly recommend Papilles!"

  • "Place is great, been there twice now. Only complaint is the food was not hot enough and I wish the menu has just a few more choices."

  • "Tucked away in the corner of a tiny shopping center, Papilles would be easy to miss - but you shouldn't. The food was creative and delicious. The place was packed, so obviously word is out: Papilles is terrific."

  • "Loved Papilles when it was prix fixe only, often a wiht surprise on the menu--sweet breads, or tongue with stone fruit--and now the menu provides more options with still the same excellent quality and surprises: Octopus with boudin and orange gelée, soup, their soups are sublime!) or salad with market vegetables. The menu changes weekly, sometimes more often; expect a meat, fowl and fish/seafood option. Great cheeses for third course, but I always default to the sweet; this time is was chocolate pot de creme. Love dining here, attneitve service, great wine selection, and best of all amazing food. OMG, hedgehog mushrooms!!"

  • "It was really excellent food.the plate comes out and you don't expect it to fill you up.but by the end of the plate, you're really trying hard to eat those last few bites. And nornally, I wouldn't put myself thru that, but the food is so flavorful that you just wanna eat it even if there's no more room for it. Also, excellent service"

  • "We were on our way to Pantages and wanted to eat someplace other than the W hotel or other soul-less restaurant. We were very lucky to find this place. Food was great and service attentive and helpful."

  • "Excellent French food. Quiet and small restaurant. It is in a mini mall so not the best ambiance, but the food is outstanding!"

  • "Although the menu at first is somewhat discerning...i.e. not too many choices. My husband who loves choices , at first glance gave me a look like "where did you bring me too?" Everything we ordered albeit was delicious and changed his initial demeanor. They only had one salad - we ordered it - lovely....they had maybe 3 appetizers - the one we ordered was divine, Pork Rilletes, I believe and it was divine and our flank steak cooked to a medium rare was delicious. Its a quaint hole in the wall the inside was very bistro like and intimate. Overall would come back to dine."

  • "Incredible wine menu featuring a variety of worldly labels. A great little gem amongst the mix of larger, more well known restaurants. Highly recommend, great for couples or small groups! The food was fantastic across the board!"

  • "We've been big fans of Papilles pretty much since they opened, but I have to say, I love the expanded menu choices. Except for the part where I have to choose, because I love pretty much everything Chef Tim does, which makes narrowing things down tough. Our dinner the other night was no exception - I had the smoked sea trout (yum!), hubby had the pork rillettes (double yum!) but we had to leave the veloute and salad behind. See, tough choices! The entrees weren't any easier, in choosing the flat iron with escargot (yay!) and the black sea bass (wow!) we had to forgo the Mary's chicken and the vegetarian plate. But I'm not regretting the road not taken, because the road taken gave us a fabulous feast. Thanks again, Papilles!"

  • "We went to Papilles for the first time on Saturday night. The food was amazing. My fiance had the chicken because the waiter highly recommended it recognizing the skeptical look from us. It was absolutely fantastic. Nice thing about it was that while it was a half chicken, the chef boned it so every bit of it could be enjoyed. We also ordered oysters for an appetizer and these were the absolute freshest I have ever had. Can't wait to return"

  • "Chef Tim really knows how to whip up an excellent meal. I have been there 4 times now and have an excellent ( not just good) meal each time. The menu is limited but don't let that scare you away. Also, try the soup - always the best!"

  • "Fantastic chef in his Dodgers cap and charming host/waiter - coupled with the changing pre fix menu and atmosphere - it's one of my favorites"

  • "Really good meals. Very attentive and friendly atmosphere. Funky (in a good way) atmosphere. But the choice of only two price fixe dinners was too limiting. The menu needed a bit more variety."

  • "Our second Christmas Eve at Papilles, and I think it's a tradition now! We love the intimacy of this restaurant almost as much as we love Chef Tim's food, so it's the perfect place to celebrate. Thanks for another great evening!"

  • "We made a reservation at Papilles through OT because it was near our house. The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of a small, unassuming mini mall in Hollywood. The feel inside is that of a tiny neighborhood bistro. There is a limited daily menu to choose from. Wine is selected by perusing the stock on shelves in the dining room. Service was casual but friendly and informative. My wife and I both enjoyed our meals and felt the quality and overall experience exceeded our expectations. We'll be looking to return to try what Papilles is cooking next!"
