Certainly, other fine San Jose restaurants have opened in recent years, but none have defined that great Italian dinner for generation after generation as well as the one launched by Giacchino Paolo Aiello, better known as Jack Allen, and his wife, Geraldine. Only a scant few have that indefinable quality the Italians call il cuore - heart - exemplified by Paolo’s. Since 1958 Paolo’s has remained a favorite of Silicon Valley locals and visitors alike.   • "I'm honestly confused as to why this place is rated so highly, and who exactly are the patrons that find the food here pleasing. I included a comment that it was for a birthday meal and while we received a warm welcome (they thought we were for a party in the adjacent bar area, we were not - no harm done) and attentive, very polite service, the food itself was just bad. There was not even a birthday wish or any acknowledgement but our waiter did note that it was our first time there, so he must have seen that on the reservation. I'm a stickler for attention to detail, so that was disappointing. All in all, the service was great but the temperature, flavor, and portions of food were just not good. The only saving grace was the warm donut."

Here is the ideal family special occasion place if your family spans generations. This time we split the Grigliata Di Funghi Alla Toscana (super tasty mushroom app), my wife had the Pollo Alla Tripiano (featuring a wicked smooth polenta) and I had the fish of the day which I think was a sea bass and was cooked so nicely i did not care what it's name was! The bread here is a life sustaining necessity. A great place to celebrate my birthday!"

  • "Me and my wife wanted to have a romantic dinner. It was the night before valentine's day and was an early dinner so we could catch a show afterwards. We decided on Paolo's after reading the reviews. Only one other couple was dining at the time, which was a little awkward. But, we were there on what is probably a very slow night so I'll give them a pass on that. I have no complaints about the food or service, both were very good. The homemade pasta is definitely the highlight and the sauces we tried were unique and flavorful. The wine list is extensive. The one downside was the atmosphere was pretty standard. Not what you'd expect given the upscale prices."

  • "We were looking for a place to have a nice slow evening with drinks and dinner and Paolo's surpassed expectations. Love their Wine flight with 5 pours. We enjoyed the wine through the evening with our five courses and it made for a really relaxing experience. Our waiter, Sean, knew how to pace things perfectly as well as when to check on us and when to give us space. Veal Saltimbocca was prepared and presented well, with complex flavors. (All the other times I've had this dish it had sage, for some reason they used rosemary - but it was still good)."

They knew ahead of time and everyone that served us from the maitre de to our waiter greeted us with a Happy Anniversary, including the owner! We felt very special. The food was delicious and wine pairing by our waiter perfect. The service was paced so that we could really enjoy ourselves without feeling rushed.   • "You have to walk through the garage...then through the lobby out toward the river and then turn right to get to the front door of Paolo's (if you drove to get there). It is well worth the effort. They make you feel right at home...starting with a unique house cocktail...can't tell you all the ingredients but it was delicious and fun to drink something new. Then, we moved to the dining room where we started with an antipasti tray and then some calamari...both were great. Oh, and the soup of the day was butternut squash, it was highly recommend by our server and we all ordered it. Not a drop was left in anyone's bowl. My entrée was the duck it was delicious, too. Crisp on the outside, tender on the inside in a slightly sweet sauce."

  • "I organized an event at Paolo's for my company but was not able to attend it. Everyone at work was very happy with the food and the service so my co-worker and I went to check the place out. I made a reservation through OpenTable and made a note to the restaurant since my co-worker has diet restrictions and it was her birthday. It was a pleasant surprise for both of us that they actually read my comments and did their best to accommodate us. In addition they treated us with the desert. Food was very good: we had a soup, signature spinach salad and fried calamari. Sorbet and coconut panna cotta were excellent! Our server Flower was warm and very professional."

  • "Took my wife here for some Italian cuisine. The menu has an interesting mix of traditional Italian fare (a few from their original 1958 menu), and some more modern selections. The presentation of the food was nice with an appropriate amount served. The quality didn't meet my expectations, however. Some friends had raved about the quality of the food, but as far as flair goes, I didn't find it raised to a higher level as they indicated. My wife had the Saltimbocca, and you could taste poetry seasoning in the gravy. I ordered the flatiron steak medium rare. It was barely medium. The service was great. Our waitress was attentive and courteous. She was very busy: they could have used an additional server for the number of patrons dining."

The restaurant is beautiful inside, the food was delicious (pasta hand made in house!), and the servers were *wonderful*. A couple of people were quite late in arriving, and the staff was gracious to hold our table for us, and to let us remain in the bar until everyone arrived."

Our dinner on the whole was quite good, couldn't wait to have the twisted sesame bread again and the wine recommended by our server was great. The entrees were satisfactory, but not great. The food was easily among the top 5 restaurants I have ever enjoyed as well. By the end of the night we were on a first name basis with our server, Shawn, I had cried tears of joy from one of the dishes, and we had met the owner. It was an amazing experience! I would highly recommend this to anyone! A great place for a date night, nice dinner after work or the movies. The staff is so attentive and warm. They made us feel relaxed and at home. It was the best kind of dinner - a 2 hour experience of culinary delight!"

  • "Dining light on a Friday Night starting with Grigliata Di Funghi Alla Toscana split between us. I had the Pesce Del Giorno (Grilled Salmon done fine and flaky with a textbook sear) and my wife enjoyed the Orecchiette with sausage and broccolirab. Impeccable service as usual, if you have not come here you NEED to. The wine flight of 5 glasses goes very well with anything you can order because you can create the assortment from the list of wines by the glass. Great coffee also."
