Diner Reviews
  • "Paola's is consistently wonderful. The food is delicious. The people watching is fun. The waitstaff is attentive. Only complaint - the tables are too close together. Don't come here if you want a private conversation. But come here for high quality food excellently prepared and good atmosphere."

  • "Perfect for adults who like very good food and want to easily conduct a conversation over a meal. Service is friendly and professional. We 'll go back as often as possible."

  • "In our experience, the Upper East Side may have moneyed people, but it doesn't have great restaurants. Paola's, however, is more than adequate. It has a nice menu, decent service, a nice ambience. We got a table near the door, which was NOT great. We will go back, especially when we need to go to events at the 92nd. St. Y."

  • "We were a party of 4, they frequent Paola's fairly often and they were able to get a corner table making it a little less noisy than sitting in the center of the restaurant. Every appetizer and main dish was delicious and beautifully served and we all selected different dishes. We truly enjoyed our experience and the location of Paola's makes it easy for my husband and me to drive there and back from New Jersey. We will definitely be back and will be happy to bring friends with us!"

  • "This is a real neighborhood gem that deserves repeat visits."

  • "I've lived on UES for 10 years. This is one of my top 3 favorite Italian restaurants (in this price range) on UES. True Italian food both in preparation on menu offerings. Bar service was excellent. There was confusion with table service (guys who bring out food) but head waiter was knowledgeable."

  • "we are fortunate to have a restaurant of this caliber in our neighborhood -- but would go anywhere for the lovely dining experience we had at Paola's. the menu is fresh, the food is beautifully prepared and the service is excellent."

  • "First rate food and service. Have been back many times and the menu is consistently excellent."

  • "Outstanding food and service, and outdoor dining, too! Paola's is the best which explains the many waiting for a table...it's worth it!!"

  • "One of the best in Carnegie Hill. Food was amazing...the artichokes & pasta were to die. Service was lovely and the wine list was plentiful."

  • "Food was great, but expensive for rather small pasta portions"

  • "Interesting Italian--not your generic menu. Same for wines, though few bargains on the list. Careful reading in less well regions like Sardinia pays off. Our waiter excellent and knowledgeable though that hasn't been the case on prior visits."

  • "I have nothing to add to my previous comments about this wonderful Italian Restaurant."

  • "The tables were packed together, less than a foot apart. Twice during dinner I had to assist older women with canes leaving an adjacent table, which needed to be pushed aside (by me and my companion) - no staff came to assist them. My water glass was empty most of the time. Twice I had to ask for refills. Repeatedly the staff reached over my shoulder, knocking me, to grab used plates and not-quite empty glasses. For these prices, they should be courteous and be more on top of things. The food was good but not amazing."

  • "This is where we go for an exciting Italian meal in an elegant setting. Menu always changes, so there is always something new to try."

  • "Looking forward to an intimate Anniversary Dinner? Not the place...too tight and too noisy...but great food. So go with your taste buds and ear plugs."

  • "Nothing like Paola's for wonderful, authentic, Italian! Home made pastas are the best in the City! Now it's even better because you can dine outside. The hostess/owner/ executive Chef, Paola Bottero, is originally from Rome and provides exciting and delicious culinary creations Roman style with flavors from other great regions in Italy using the best fresh market ingredients. • "Food is absolutely delicious. The only minus is the table we were given....next to the front door OpenTable should negotiate better placement for customers who use the app for a reservation."

  • "They were so busy, our reservation was for 8:30 and they did not get us in till 9:00; and then they had to rush the food -our fish was undercooked and I returned it for the pasta which was good. I have to say, this was not my usual experience there and it is a neighborhood hot spot- so I probably will go back again; I generally have a positive experience so will chalk this up to a bad day! Every business has a bad day and well, as they say- 3 strikes and your out- so if the tides are turning we will soon find out"

  • "Best Italian food outside of Italy. They also have Gluten free pasta!"

  • "Wonderful homemade pastas.friendly service. I especially enjoyed the pasta with asparagus and lemon zest."

  • "Having lived in northern Italy for four years, I can tell you they do their pasta and other dishes correctly. Portions are reasonable without being over the top. Try the artichoke appetizer and the ricotta cheesecake cherry dessert is NOT to be missed. Not cloyingly sweet, but so yummy. "

  • "A real neighborhood find. Everyone in my party thought the food was delicious if a bit pricey but, hey, it's Madison Avenue. I've walked by the place for years and assumed it was probably a rather sleepy in the evening. Not so. It was fully booked until 9:00 pm on a Wednesday night. My only complaint was the combination of the tile floor and the lively crowd makes Paolo's a bit noisy. "

  • "Our family party of 10 needed a restaurant in Manhattan for Sunday brunch to celebrate a graduation. A place we could reserve and not wait. My brother recommended Paola's, having dined there several times. The staff were very helpful and accommodating in every aspect, including specially setting up a table in the front corner to seat our full party. (I could only reserve 2 tables of 5 online.) There are a good variety of brunch-appropriate menu items available. The food was very good and well presented. The members of our party ordered a variety of items, all of which pleased. I ordered the frittata, which was superb! The setting was very enjoyable as well. Not elegant, but classy and comfortable enough. Highly recommend!"

  • "Paola's Restaurant is just like the restaurants I went to growing up in Rome, except that it's in New York! The ambiance is terrific, the food is delicious, and the service is excellent. Grazie mille Paola per un'altra serata splendida."

  • "We've been here several times for family events and have always been treated well and served wonderful Italian food. This time they were especially accomodating in allowing us, over two weeks, to expand from three people to seven for our reservation (DON'T try this on OpenTable -- you have to call the restaurant!). Everyone was entranced by the food, though I would recommend the chocolate cake over the tiramisu. We will certainly be returning here."

  • "Nice food, good service. What more can you ask for in the neighborhood gem."
    Dined on 5/9/2014
  • "The menu is varied, with many dishes you don't often find in this country. The service was relaxed, friendly, and prompt. And it's a nice room, not too big and not too small, with windows onto Madison Avenue. We enjoyed a long early lunch with some old friends and agreed Paola's was perfect for that and we'd be back."

  • "this is definitely the best italian food of the UES and UWS!!!"

  • "The food is consistently terrific, every dish we have tried is exceptional, the servers are excellent and Paola walks around the restaurant making sure everything is fine. "

  • "The menu at this neighborhood gem is outstanding, with an inclusive selection of dishes to satisfy any palette, Dishes are thoughtfully prepared and are rarely disappointing, even though the selections are vast."

  • "The outstanding food is matched by the warm, friendly, and wonderful service. A must: the artichoke appetizer. "

  • "On the very upper East side there are a number of good, but very small bistros with very tight tables. Paola's provides a larger space, with just a little more space inbetween their white table clothed tables, to allow diniing and speaking without entering into your neighbor's conversation at the same time. It has wide windows and even on a rainy evening, it felt air and still cozy. The food presentation was excellent. "

  • "The food here is consistently excellent. Whatever we order at this restaurant is terrific. We have never had a mediocre meal and continue to rate it as our favorite restaurant. The wait staff is terrific and attentive. The owners are also there to ensure that everything goes well."

  • "Paola's is our UES go to restaurant. The food is always delicious!! If you like artichokes definetly try their Roman style app dish. Also I have trouble not ordering just their simple spaghetti in red sauce, it's always perfect! Only complaint it that I felt like they were rushing us out of there! I saw them bring our pastas out when we hadn't even finished our first course......was a bit annoying! The scene is a bit noisy but that only because of the space itself. Otherwise great spot."
    Dined on 4/28/2014
  • "Paola's is a wonderful Rome-centric Italian restaurant in the UES. It's one of the rarer restaurants that truly means "homemade" and "housemade" when it comes to the pastas and cheeses. The service is always excellent, and the prices are reasonable for the excellent quality of food."
    Dined on 4/27/2014
  • "The salads were skimpy and obviously made in the morning, because the plates were frozen, the pastas were average, and the expressi after dinner were bitter with a foam that disappeared after the first sip...the service was polite and proper, without a touch of warmth or concern. The room itself we knew about from previous incarnations in the same space, with 20" ceilings (a former supemarket many years ago), and when it's full, the noise level creates the Lombard effect, where everyone feels they have to speak louder than the person next to them in order to be heard. There are too many other good restaurants in this neighborhood for us to return here."
    Dined on 4/25/2014
  • "The food is surprisingly delicious and inventive. I really love the food here. My only complaint is how tight the tables are. Diners and packed in and can practically share food from the table next to you. "
