Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was delectable (I had the special steak, my girlfriend ordered the rabbit) and all of the staff were nothing short of gracious. It's a very small, quiet, intimate sort of space. I went here for my birthday with a couple of friends and was pleasantly surprised that we were actually able to hear one another across the table. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu."

  • "We went here for a sort-of anniversary dinner and it was perfect. Unpretentious and cozy, good neighborhood feel, noise level manageable for two 50 year olds. The service was excellent. We went all-seafood and liked everything we ate, including a cold sardine special appetizer. The wine list is modestly priced, we enjoyed a very drinkable white Douro recommended by our waitress. We shared the egg-white based dessert with a glass of excellent port (go for the expensive!)."

  • "I went back to this restaurant after quite a long time (8+ years) and again it was really nice: Tasty menu, impecable service and great atmosphere."

  • "The food and service were both disappointing the other night. Went there with three other people. The only dish that was really good was the fried cod fish cakes appetizer. It was excellent. The rabbit, which had been highly recommended, was utterly forgettable, even poor. The sauce was thin and flavorless. The side salad was undressed (!). Other dishes we had included a duck appetizer, a warm squid appetizer, a salad, and a tiger shrimp entree. They were all mediocre. Service was slow initially; it got better. The atmosphere is wonderful. I did express my dissatisfaction with the rabbit to the manager. He seemed genuinely disconcerted, so perhaps they'll improve that dish in the future. Management was very nice."

  • "This was a lovely and delicious authentic portuguese restaurant. The green wine is fantastic! We were in a bit of a hurry to get to a fashion show so unfortunately we didn't get to finish the bottle but wished we could have taken it home it was so good! We came here on a living social deal two apps, two entrees, two desserts. I had the tiger shrimp over bread pudding and he had the steak. We both LOVED our dishes. Portions are small as you would expect from finer dining, but we were satisfied at the end of the three course meal and didn't feel too full. The chocolate mousse was also spectacular. The service was great, the place was empty at 6 but by the time we left it was almost completely full. Would recommend for sure."

  • "Great authentic healthy food, nice wines and wonderful service -- one of my favorites!"

  • "Although I went there with a coupon, the food was good, portion was good, people were friendly. Since the restaurant was crowded with customers with coupons like us, the service was little under the weather. But I would definitely go back and try their other wonderful dishes."

  • "Great Portuguese food and excellent service. Used a living social coupon and was able to order anything off the menu. Great wine too and a complimentary glass of port at the end of the evening. Would go back without a coupon."

  • "My wife and I were given a dining voucher to Pao's by some friends. My first impression was of a cosy but romantic place which I knew I'd enjoy eating at. The food was excellent - nicely presented, full of flavor with good attention to detail. Also, I never expect much from house wine but their house red (which was a part of our meal voucher) was very smooth and rich in flavor which was a nice surprise. This was a truly amazing gift by some thoughtful friends and we will go again without doubt."

  • "The dining room was tiny, so it didn't matter that we were running late; there were no tables to be had for a while, anyway! The scallops we had were resplendent; soft and buttery with a lightly crisp exterior, and in a typical diced tomato sauce. The grappa-seared linguica was flamed table side, and had a lovely flavor and aroma. We opted for rabbit and the lamb shank; these were fine, but have had better renditions elsewhere. The show stopper was egg white pudding, a super-soft meringue drizzled in caramel. Heavenly. Add in the Portuguese wines and it's a nice trip abroad without spending too much!"

  • "Food is consistently good and service is helpful and friendly. We came back with good friends bc we knew they'd enjoy it as much as we did, and we had a great time. We relaxed and had an animated conversation over good food and wine, without being rushed. The scallop app, and fish w truffle mashed are outstanding; watercress and orange salad a simple but refreshing palate cleanser. Ambiance is cozy - the place is small."

  • "Restaurant layout is cramped, more so than the usual NYC restaurant. The owners' children or relatives' children were running around making noise and causing distractions to the staff which was annoying. Food was good for the most part but nothing super impressive except for the snapper dish and the chocolate salami."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. There were plenty of dishes to choose from, and there were no restrictions with our voucher. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The staff was friendly and our waitstaff was attentive."

  • "I love seafood from this restaurant, this restaurant is a little far away from the center of Manhattan but it worth the walk. Food is special and good tasting. Servers were friendly and attentive. Restaurant is very small, 3 large tables & 2 couple tables that's all."

  • "Unfortunately it was not what we expected but this was the only Portuguese restaurant in NYC"

  • "I recently bought a LivingSocial deal for Pao and took the time to look it up and decide that it would be a good purchase to make. I went ahead and booked reservations through OpenTable and had good expectations for the entire dining experience. Our reservation was for 8:30 which we arrived on time and the owner explained that the OpenTable and reservations made via over the phone got mixed so we waited until 10 to get seated. In the meantime the owner expressed his apologies and gave us free drinks and a appetizer. The food, once we sat, was very good. The wine was delicious. And we both left very full and exhausted from a long dinner date that was not expected."

  • "I found the restaurant because of Living Social which had a great deal. I've never had Portuguese food before but it was great! My boyfriend enjoyed himself thoroughly and we would definitely go again. It was my first dining experience in the city and it will be hard to top."

  • "I got a deal on living social and since it got some many good reviews I decided to go and I am so happy I did,! Everything was delish! For appetizer my favorite was the crab cake which was highly recommended, for dinner we had the steak and the cod and egg dish both of which were so tasty! We had the green wine which complimented the meal and for dessert we had the pound cake thing which was great, we also got this other chocolate thing which we didn't love but it was good. All in all I highly recommend it!"

  • "Classic Portuguese dishes are tasty, hearty, and often healthy treat to begin with. The folks at Pao have not only managed to master these classics but also added a tasteful twist of genius to each plate. Portioning is careful but plentiful compared to the excessive generosity found in many Newark, NJ establishments. The ingredients seemed fresh and of good quality. But the twist can be found in creatively replacing the cuisine's age old mashed potatoes with a whipped potatoes made with a touch of white truffle oil to accompany an expertly prepared snapper. The creation was excellent."

  • "Unusual tasty menu choices, friendly well-timed service with good recommendations. the scallop appetizer is excellent, snapper entree was perfectly cooked w crispy skin. space is a little small, so I wonder if it would be noisy on a busy nite. we definitely want to come back w friends."

  • "I recently dined here with my husband after a several year hiatus. The food was delicious - octopus salad, sardines, flambe sausage, fish in a honey broth -- and the service attentive but not crowding. The only reason I didn't give it an excellent score is the lack of gluten-free dessert options. It's a real treat. Check it out!"

  • "Wonderful food, service and atmosphere. Scallop and Octopus appetizer were both wonderful. Flank steak and Cod over sweet peppers were both delightful. Will visit here again next time we are in NYC"
