  • "Good food. Baja salad and pablano chili were excellent. Great outdoor seating with plenty of heaters if needed. Cute and quirky"

  • "The Panama Hotel is a special place for a casual celebration with a few friends. With the recent summer heat, their outdoor patio was a treat. The menu is nit extensive but adequate. The food is delicious but their seafood salad while tasty was skimpy with the seafood. 3 prawns and a very small slice of salmon."

  • "If you want to escape to Baja or anyplace south of Marin, and you only have two hours, have lunch at the Panama Hotel. Unhurried, tasty, fresh, quiet enough in the outdoor dining area to hear the fountain's music amid the banana palms. Also, some interesting wines by the glass."

  • "I go for lunch at Panama Hotel almost every Friday, meeting various friends from various parts of the Bay area. Every one I introduce to the restaurant comes again, bringing friends of her own. It's always a wonderful place to be, especially in the garden, each friend finds her favorite dish or two and won't budge from them. It's a joyful, beautiful, serene kind of place which has me looking forward to going back the minute I walk out the door. The neighborhood is also a lovely place for walking, with beautiful, old houses on tree-lined streets. Don't miss them in the fall. Don't miss them anytime."

  • "Eating lunch in the outdoor patio at the Panama Hotel Restaurant is sheer delight. The lunch menu, which has both, a Mexican influence and a Mediterranean influence, is broad and the very tasty dishes are beautifully served. I love the tortilla soup and the Baja salad, each of which display delicate Mexican flavors. The décor is colorful and transports me to a quiet villa in Mexico. Umbrellas and trees provide adequate shade; the chairs are very comfortable; the wait staff most friendly and efficient."

  • "My wife made the recommendation. She said she hadn't been there in 20 years. We enjoyed lunch with a special business colleague from France. Food service and ambiance were perfect. It will be a regular for us now."

  • "The Panama Hotel is a true original. Comfy, tasty food, good wine, great vibes. A touch kitschy. A place to wind down and relax. Always a pleasure."

  • "Many years ago I frequented the Panama for many businesses lunches. Perfect spot for really good consistent food, worth while wine list, and good lunch crowd. After many years and the next chapter of my career meant dinners with my wife. Still very good comfort food, worth while wine list to try out a few things you won't find easily, and the staff and patrons create a comfortable space."

  • "I've been here many times over the years and it's still my favorite place to lunch in San Rafael during warm months. The outdoor patio dining with ample umbrellas to supply shade for all who desire it is charming and the service is always warm and friendly. There is something for everyone on the varied menu."

  • "Three of us had this salad and it was very good. One had Ceasar salad and it had plenty of chicken. One had egg as florentine and liked it. So overall everyone was happy. The wine corkage is a little steep."

  • "We love this place. Lunch, brunch or dinner this restaurant always rises to the occasion. The food is excellent and you can't beat the ambiance."

  • "I have frequented this restaurant since it opened 30 years ago. It has remained one of my top choices for any occasion. The owner is professional and good to his employees."

  • "Good food but the service is always lacking. Last two times I've been, it took 15 min to place my order; once the food was received, I never saw the waiter again. Granted, each time it was the same waiter."
    Dined on 6/4/2014
  • "The food was very good. The ambiance is lovely. Warning!!! The Tables are SQUISHED together inside the main dinning room. Very uncomfortable table layouts. Everyone bumps into you and the table in the back of you is 2" from your back. Our friends were so bothered that in the middle of dinner we had to change tables. Wish they would address that problem. Recommend sitting outside if the weather permits."

  • "I love the Panama Hotel not only is the food and service superb but you always feel as if you've entered another world. It's not as if the tables are too close together, because they're not, but this dinner was conversation was going to be quite personal in nature. I specifically chose the Panama because they have a tree hidden porch with only three tables. That corner of the restaurant feels truly like a separate world. We spent four hours talking over a relaxed dinner and were never made to feel like we were holding up the business of the restaurant. I find myself going back more and more often these days and always enjoying my experience. "

  • "Something about their burgers -- they really know how to make them here. My petrale sole special was not as special as expected, but the burger was outstanding and the salads were very good. Lemon tart was delicious. Always an enjoyable dining experience with superb service."

  • "I sent a written request to please put a candle in my friend's dessert as we were celebrating his birthday. When we checked in, I told the maitre D this was a birthday, and I mentioned it in conversation while the waitress was with us at the table. Nothing -- no candle, no mention of it. I was so disappointed and so was my friend. Also the service was extremely slow getting food to table. I am going to stop bringing my friends here to celebrate occasions, sadly. "

  • "I've lived in Marin since 1987 and the Panama hotel has always been there and has never disappointed. Great food, a diverse menu and wine list and great service. Keep up the great work! I want to eat there when I'm 90! (That's 30 years from now!) :-) "

  • "Words we never herd after our dinner was dumped in front of us. We never saw another person throughout dinner until I finally waved my arms and the host came over so I could ask for water. I had to ask if there were special offerings that evening. Oh yes we have lobster tail. He walked away before I could ask him if there were special starters or soup. The kitchen was very slow and we finally flagged him down for our check. The pretty black Lab dining outside with his owners received better service. "

  • "Panama always delivers. It's comfortable and friendly yet the food is as good as any you'll find. And it's not noisy!"

  • "We ate before a concert at the Civic Center. It was early evening and we ate outside. It is an elegant but relaxed kind of a place. Feels special but not stuffy. The menu has so many reasonably priced appetizers it was hard to choose--we wanted all of them. The ceviche was wonderful and so were the Greek salad and the mussels. The Baja Seafood salad is wonderful too. The waiter was attentive and personable. It has that small neighborhood feel. Very nice experience."

  • "I had eaten there some time ago for a birthday dinner. It was so good I knew I wanted to go there for my really special occasion. The dining experience surpassed my expectations. Fabulous meal and left overs too!"

  • "The Panama Hotel is off the beaten track, been around for a while - and still a terrific spot for lunch, brunch or dinner - sometimes live music!! Interesting menu and great value!! Highly recmmend"

  • "The food was quite good. I ordered the special for the evening, fish stew and my husband ordered the rack of lamb. Wine list was also adequate. However, we ate inside and the noise level was very annoying. I would definitely recommend this spot but make sure you eat on the porch or in the garden. "

  • "The Panama Hotel is our favorite midday restaurant when the mercury in San Rafael rises to 70. Guests from chilly San Francisco are particularly appreciative of this relatively unknown (in San Francisco) gem."

  • "I love jazz. However, I don't like dining with others in a small space with live music. Impossible to have a conversation--impossible!!!!!"

  • "I love this restaurant! I attended a wedding reception here decades ago and noted that it was a very charming place (albeit somewhat hidden) in a residential neighborhood. Since then, I've introduced so very many people to the Panama Hotel & Restaurant and not one person found a thing wrong with it. The food is wonderful, the ambiance fabulous, eating outside is always a favorite thing to do. Although, my hubby and I did eat inside on Valentine's Day and it was very romantic. I haven't had the pleasure of enjoying the live music for very long (having had early reservations), but I will say that many people have told me how great that is too! Put it on your list and I guarantee you will be back."
