However, my last visit, Sunday, 5/5/12, Cinco De Mayo, brought one of the best meals I have had there: Steak, Prawn, Crab, prepared in a fashion that was not only fresh, but absolutely fantastic. I followed my meal with the gorgeous bread pudding. I can hardly wait to return HOME to Palomino, Westwood.
Palomino will always be "special" to me as when I formally retired from UCLA fall 2011 my faculty gave me a dinner there which was not only the best in food and service, but the exact place I wanted to remember my UCLA evenings after work. A seafood louie should have more than two shrimp and a very small lump of crabmeat. BTW -- if you have tickets to the Geffen, you can park for free and get a free dessert when you eat at Palomino. Lots of delicious combinations plus excellent salads and an interesting wine list. Our server was helpful but not intrusive. You can have a much fancier meal at Palomino and it's probably equally good. Delicious, fresh, and nicely proportioned, the food was ample without being excessive. It was a Sunday evening, so they may have been short staffed, and the service was lagging. There was only one server for an entire dining area.
Grilled artichoke appetizer was filling, well cooked, and the dipping sauce was superb. Our guest had the mini wedge which was an artful presentation of 3 bib lettuce "wedges" chock full of blue cheese, bacon, and onion crinkles. The atmosphere is lovely, elegant without feeling stuffy. The large windows give a pleasant light and openness to the restaurant. Everyone was very happy with their food, and there are several dishes that are reasonably priced. I particularly loved my grilled chicken salad with walnut encrusted bleu cheese. It was delicious! I will have a hard time returning w/out ordering the same thing.
