  • "My husband and I went to the restaurant because we are fans of the Chef at Palo Alto Grill, Ryan Shelton. When given the opportunity, he will create the most amazing unusual dishes. We live in Santa Cruz, where he used to be the Chef at Cigare Volant before it closed. I hope the customers in Palo Alto don't expect a boring beef and bourbon kind of meal from him."

  • "Started out by having a sparse bar. No Johnnie Walker Black? That's pretty much a staple for any better restaurant particularly a 'Grill'. I have to say the server covered well. Then my medium-rare steak came out medium and was labeled that way. The server remembered I ordered M/R. I had to wait for a new steak. Either one of these could have been overlooked, but two bad hits in one night? They did seem short on staff and I didn't see the server much after these two faux pas, perhaps having written-off her tip which was another mistake, actually. It might be worth another try as the food was very good."

  • "Came again after not having been here for a few months to meet a friend. The menu had been changed quite a bit which was a nice surprise. the place was pretty busy for a Wednesday night and one of the available "party" rooms was booked as well. Service was - as always - quick, friendly and the server knew her stuff. The scallop appetizer was outstanding, so was the salad with green goddess sauce. The steaks we ordered were cooked right, tasty, and the sides (brussels sprouts and fries) were good as well. Deserts and coffee are always a treat here, especially the beignets. All in all: not cheap but excellent quality, good service and nice presentation."

  • "I split the bone-in-ribeye with a friend and it was really delicious - and plenty of food. Looked like something from the Flintstones - the bone hung off the table. Great Brussels sprouts and Mac 'n Cheese. The wine by the glass was pricey ($14-$15) and the 3 different types of salts were a little pretentious. But overall a very good meal."

  • "It was so nice to see a restaurant try different things. Most restaurants have variations on the same old food items. The Palo Alto Grill takes some chances, and gets away from the same old thing. Interesting combinations, great sides, lovely service. All of the dishes that we had were not only delicious but they were also beautifully presented, especially the desserts."

  • "Overall I wasn't to thrilled about anything. Peppercorn burger was nice and juicy, and decently flavored. Brussel sprouts were a bit greasy and could have been served in a different type of dish, color mis match made it less inviting. Friend got the steak salad which I thought was a total rip off: Ice berg lettuce and very little onions & corn with a very small portion of steak. The steak did not look like an expensive cut of beef but more of a cheap flank steak type.... all for about $20 Lunch crowd was minimal. Expected a lot more patrons for the location, but i guess word got out about the food."

  • "My wife had some errands at Stanford Shopping Center and Downtown Palo Alto, so we decided to meet here for lunch. It's convenient with a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. By it's location and ambiance, I expected it to be a great experience, and reality is that it was even above and beyond that. Service was attentive, hospitable and engaging. Food was well presented and flavorful. Highly recommend the Fried Brussels Sprouts with brown sugar and butter pecan, the Masala rubbed Scallops, and the Le Steak Frites. Lots of extra touches to make this place a cut above others. Enjoyed the background music as well, not your typical canned elevator tunes. Hope to go back for one of their "jazz" night concerts."

  • "My overall impression of the Palo Alto Grill was great. The service was very friendly and task oriented. The drinks were very pleasing to the palate. I ordered char-broiled octopus, which was well made to the finest detail. My guest had the sausage and shrimp gumbo. Originating from the South, I'm more accustomed to having gumbo served over rice, but the fried okra fared well. The music was a little loud for the dinner crowd atmosphere in my opinion."

  • "The waiter was attentive without being overbearing. The prawn gumbo was rich and filling. I had a passion fruit/vodka drink that was spicy and sweet. Delicious! A quaint jazz trio played a few sets. We loved that!"

  • "We arrived 10 minutes late to our reservation, but they were very helpful and still able to seat us. We were also unaware that there is a blues band that plays here on Fridays, though that was a pleasant surprise for our group. We very much enjoyed the loud and fun (yet still formal) atmosphere. The wait staff was fantastic. Our waiter gave us great recommendations on food and wine and everyone in our party of 5 enjoyed their meal immensely."

  • "My group of 4 had a wonderful time trying things we'd never had before, both drinks and food. We went early, 5pm, and were the only patrons there. It was very quiet for the whole meal, and was just filling up as we left. We picked several dishes from the Croatian menu, and were delighted with the selections, and then filled out the rest of the meal off the regular menu. We passed plates and shared most everything so we could all try a lot of dishes. I started off with a Moscow Mule to drink, and enjoyed the copper mug it was served in. It kept the drink much colder than a glass, which it is normally served in, at least in my experience, and it was icy all the way to the bottom of the drink. We'll go again, and go early for a quiet dinner."

  • "The entrees were delicious and interesting, the waiter was charming & attentive, and the atmosphere conducive to good conversation. The only negative about this very fine restaurant is that there wasn't a single glass of wine available under $12, which was disappointing. In contrast, the entrees were not only tasty & inventive, but reasonably priced. My husband had a glass of the Justin cab for $12. Lovely wine, but $9 would have been more in line with other restaurants. I had a wonderful cocktail for the same price - it was delicious & had a fun presentation, too. I would have ordinarily ordered a glass of wine with dinner, but the high price put me off. Other than the overpriced wine, we were very impressed & plan to return."

  • "We went there for the 1st time on Valentine's Day. They had a fixed menu with seafood as the 2nd dish. I'm allergic to seafood and asked if I could have something else. They were not accommodating. We also were not thrilled with the food for the price. We'll give it another shot, but others I've talked with didn't have many good things to say either."

  • "This is the old Miyake converted to a steakhouse. The problem is the restaurant doesn't know what it wants to be. It had a feel of sports bar but wants to be fine dining. The servers are indifferent and disengaged. There isn't a full bar only beer and wine which makes it feel like a casual joint. The lighting is weird like you are in a cafeteria. We ordered steak and halibut. Both were mediocre tasting. The utensils are cheap and my Pinot noir was served in a small wine glass. Will not come back."

  • "We came here because we heard that they had a side menu of several Croatian specialties in addition to their regular menu. (The General Manager is Croatian.) So if you're in the mood for burek, sarma, cevapcici or Adriatic-style grilled sea bass and octopus, this is the place! Service was excellent, starting with a basket of freshly baked bread and soft pretzels with mustard dip. Upon request, we were offered a very nice extra virgin olive oil for dipping. Decor is casual elegant, nice table settings. Only wish they had more fine Croatian wines on offer-- hope those can be added to the menu soon!"

Our Hostess was gracious, knowledgable and thoughtful - never missing a step or opportunity to provide that small item extra that makes the difference between a good dining experience to one that makes you think fondly back upon it a day or two later.   • "My husband and I went to the Palo Alto Grill over the weekend for his birthday dinner. The host asked if we wanted to be seated closer or farther from the live Jazz Band - we opted for farther away - and he happily accommodated our request. Our server was very prompt in coming to our table, offering suggestions and her favorites on the cocktail and food menus. Her recommendations were spot on. She was super friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive (without hovering). When we ordered dessert, I told her we were there for my husband's birthday, and she brought the dessert with a candle and even comped it for us! We will definitely be back!"

We were celebrating a special birthday, and I assumed there would be table cloths, fabric napkins, being a spiffy steakhouse, and we were seated near the bar with live musicians... Nice, but you couldn't converse! The waitress was great, helped us move to another table, had recommendations from the menu, but it was pricey! Crab was mushy, presentation was midi ocher, not enough vegetarian dishes for one in our party, steak was very high priced, so were the drinks and wine! Won't rush back!"

The service was exceptional and we were pampered. At home, my husband was still raving about the great experience at this restaurant, although it was on the pricey side, but worth it."

  • "Open only since April, this is a must go place. The food had unique twists on favorites and unusual dishes as well. The spicy passion cocktail packed a hot punch but was a favorite at our table.   • "We ate here on Friday nite after a movie. The food didn't disappoint and the service was unobtrusive and excellent. They comped us the roasted (?) Brussels sprouts with pecans as a side. They were delicious! Much of the food is Croatian which surprised me because of the name of the restaurant. (Grill). We had three different dishes and they were all outstanding. Fish cooked to perfection and deboned for me, Poke, and a steak. We were all very happy with our choices. You could also make a meal of their small dishes.I will go back!"
