  • "Wanted to love Palo Alto Grill. Great location.....nice ambiance but the acoustics are dreadful so it's very difficult to hear your tablemates' conversation. Interesting menu. I particularly liked it because it wasn't too big. I had the fried brussel sprouts - amazing! Also the butter lettuce salad which was nice. Others had the scallops and the steak which they said was good. Rolled lamb chops weren't a hit as they were too fatty. Artichoke soup was excellent. The ricotta entree (don't remember the name) was not good. Hopefully it will improve a bit to compete with all the other great PA restaurants."

  • "This was our third visit to the Palo Alto Grill.It used to be steak place( which was good)but new menu is even better.We have artichoke soup and green salad to start, for main scallops and pappardelle pasta. Best meal that I had in long time. Fresh pasta was perfectly cooked and scallops were great. Save a room for dessert Will be back"

  • "I have dined at Palo Alto Grill three times when they were known to be a steakhouse. A group of us decided to come back and check out the new menu. The new summer menu definitely had a rustic feel to it and now they offer more food choices. I'm so glad they kept the signature fried Brussels sprouts and avocado corn dog dishes. The new menu still had one steak dish. This time around our table ordered the scallop, duck and steak. I always come here for the small bites! Triple cooked potato fries? yes please! Fried Brussels Sprouts, make that two! Chicken Waffle bites, do I have to share? And don't skip the dessert! you can always run it off tomorrow, but you won't find homemade Beignets or burnt almond ice cream like this!"

  • "It was a terrible experience. They had just changed their menu and it had no steaks or meat dishes that were on their original menu. Appetizers were good, but it took over an hour and a half to get our main course and the food was horrible. They did comp the bill and were very sorry for the whole dinner experience. Might give it another try when they work out the kinks. "

  • "Went here for a business lunch. Fish entree was the size of an anchovy. Couldn't be heard over the noise of traffic through the open doors. Drink order delivered incorrect twice. Long delay between delivery of first two entrees and the second two -- allowing first two to get cold. Basically everything that a restaurant could do wrong was. I seriously recommend that you go elsewhere. "

  • "I'm a fan of molecular gastronomy, but it should be executed well and food should taste good. Cocktail: Cucumber Yuzu Drop - Over half the drink was a chunky liquid nitrogen citrus mass, which was supposed to melt into drink. Just too much - looked unappetizing and made drink muddy and sweet. Wine: by the glass - good Appetizers: Ceviche Mixto with liquid nitrogen avocado sorbet shell. Ceviche was fine. Liquid avocado shell did not add to dish at all; Masala-Rubbed Scallops - scallops were cooked well, a bit heavy on the masala rub. Entree: Bacon Pecan Crusted Filet - meat was cooked well. Bacon on side. Hush puppies dry. Kale extremely salty. Seemed like dishes had potential but were over-ambitious. Liked variety of dishes."

The owners have taken great pride in establishing a menu that is from the heart.   • "The restaurant was a HUGE disappointment. The 1st course...Octopus...was literally not edible Our main course "mystery steak" was passable Billed as Very Popular it certainly was not...a few tables were occupied The wine list left a great deal to be desired "

  • "Excellent, creative dishes, beautiful presentation. Staff was warm, friendly not ostentatious and indifferent. Several big groups but noise level was low, also many spots for just two. A little difficult to recognize, (it is closer to Alma,) but look for it!"

  • "I went here for my first time, on business. Great ambience, the staff was attentive but not bothersome. The only unfortunate thing was that we ended up doing appetizers only as my manager had a dinner to go to. The steak options looked fantastic, I will have to come back to try them. Avocado corn "dogs" and the masala scallops were delicious. I will need to bring my wife back for a proper sampling of the full menu."

  • "Had dinner for 4 last night and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a vegetarian and loved the vegetarian sides and non-standard steakhouse options that Palo Alto Grill offered. In particular, the avocado corn dog, faux apple waldorf salad, fried brussell sprouts, poblano mac and cheese, and potato fritters were all amazing. My non-veggie friends enjoyed the filet mignon and flat iron steak. There was a very nice jazz band playing in the background. The ambiance was lively but easy to have a conversation. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be back! "

  • "After the first visit, our waitperson remembered me, and that I was with someone different than my first visit. After several weeks, I thought that was remarkable. After 2 visits, weeks later, she remembered us and what I liked to drink, and what we had for dessert! Something about being known at a public place makes me feel really welcome and comfortable. I also really like their changing seasonal menu. Always something new to try."

  • "My husband and I went to the restaurant because we are fans of the Chef at Palo Alto Grill, Ryan Shelton. When given the opportunity, he will create the most amazing unusual dishes. We live in Santa Cruz, where he used to be the Chef at Cigare Volant before it closed. I hope the customers in Palo Alto don't expect a boring beef and bourbon kind of meal from him."

  • "Came again after not having been here for a few months to meet a friend. The menu had been changed quite a bit which was a nice surprise. the place was pretty busy for a Wednesday night and one of the available "party" rooms was booked as well. Service was - as always - quick, friendly and the server knew her stuff. The scallop appetizer was outstanding, so was the salad with green goddess sauce. The steaks we ordered were cooked right, tasty, and the sides (brussels sprouts and fries) were good as well. Deserts and coffee are always a treat here, especially the beignets. All in all: not cheap but excellent quality, good service and nice presentation."

  • "Started out by having a sparse bar. No Johnnie Walker Black? That's pretty much a staple for any better restaurant particularly a 'Grill'. I have to say the server covered well. Then my medium-rare steak came out medium and was labeled that way. The server remembered I ordered M/R. I had to wait for a new steak. Either one of these could have been overlooked, but two bad hits in one night? They did seem short on staff and I didn't see the server much after these two faux pas, perhaps having written-off her tip which was another mistake, actually. It might be worth another try as the food was very good."

  • "I split the bone-in-ribeye with a friend and it was really delicious - and plenty of food. Looked like something from the Flintstones - the bone hung off the table. Great Brussels sprouts and Mac 'n Cheese. The wine by the glass was pricey ($14-$15) and the 3 different types of salts were a little pretentious. But overall a very good meal."

  • "It was so nice to see a restaurant try different things. Most restaurants have variations on the same old food items. The Palo Alto Grill takes some chances, and gets away from the same old thing. Interesting combinations, great sides, lovely service. All of the dishes that we had were not only delicious but they were also beautifully presented, especially the desserts."

  • "Overall I wasn't to thrilled about anything. Peppercorn burger was nice and juicy, and decently flavored. Brussel sprouts were a bit greasy and could have been served in a different type of dish, color mis match made it less inviting. Friend got the steak salad which I thought was a total rip off: Ice berg lettuce and very little onions & corn with a very small portion of steak. The steak did not look like an expensive cut of beef but more of a cheap flank steak type.... all for about $20 Lunch crowd was minimal. Expected a lot more patrons for the location, but i guess word got out about the food."

  • "My wife had some errands at Stanford Shopping Center and Downtown Palo Alto, so we decided to meet here for lunch. It's convenient with a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. By it's location and ambiance, I expected it to be a great experience, and reality is that it was even above and beyond that. Service was attentive, hospitable and engaging. Food was well presented and flavorful. Highly recommend the Fried Brussels Sprouts with brown sugar and butter pecan, the Masala rubbed Scallops, and the Le Steak Frites. Lots of extra touches to make this place a cut above others. Enjoyed the background music as well, not your typical canned elevator tunes. Hope to go back for one of their "jazz" night concerts."

  • "My overall impression of the Palo Alto Grill was great. The service was very friendly and task oriented. The drinks were very pleasing to the palate. I ordered char-broiled octopus, which was well made to the finest detail. My guest had the sausage and shrimp gumbo. Originating from the South, I'm more accustomed to having gumbo served over rice, but the fried okra fared well. The music was a little loud for the dinner crowd atmosphere in my opinion."

  • "We arrived 10 minutes late to our reservation, but they were very helpful and still able to seat us. We were also unaware that there is a blues band that plays here on Fridays, though that was a pleasant surprise for our group. We very much enjoyed the loud and fun (yet still formal) atmosphere. The wait staff was fantastic. Our waiter gave us great recommendations on food and wine and everyone in our party of 5 enjoyed their meal immensely."

  • "My group of 4 had a wonderful time trying things we'd never had before, both drinks and food. We went early, 5pm, and were the only patrons there. It was very quiet for the whole meal, and was just filling up as we left. We picked several dishes from the Croatian menu, and were delighted with the selections, and then filled out the rest of the meal off the regular menu. We passed plates and shared most everything so we could all try a lot of dishes. I started off with a Moscow Mule to drink, and enjoyed the copper mug it was served in. It kept the drink much colder than a glass, which it is normally served in, at least in my experience, and it was icy all the way to the bottom of the drink. We'll go again, and go early for a quiet dinner."

  • "The entrees were delicious and interesting, the waiter was charming & attentive, and the atmosphere conducive to good conversation. The only negative about this very fine restaurant is that there wasn't a single glass of wine available under $12, which was disappointing. In contrast, the entrees were not only tasty & inventive, but reasonably priced. My husband had a glass of the Justin cab for $12. Lovely wine, but $9 would have been more in line with other restaurants. I had a wonderful cocktail for the same price - it was delicious & had a fun presentation, too. I would have ordinarily ordered a glass of wine with dinner, but the high price put me off. Other than the overpriced wine, we were very impressed & plan to return."
