Based on the price, I see a lot of patrons will discount the experience unless everything is absolutely perfect. For us, yes it is more than we generally spend, but when I see my wife thoroughly delighted by the preparation of her food, it makes it worthwhile. The only disappointment I had was that it was my 60th birthday and I thought the staff would at least offer a complimentary dessert, which they did not. We will include it in our special places to frequent in the downtown S.D. area.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding Dinner!We've dined at the Palm many times, and on Saturday night, they didn't disappoint us. We had, by far, the best steak ever - cooked perfectly and brought to the table as soon as it came up. Thanks to our experienced and talented server, we were served a delicious, piping-hot steak straight from the grill; it never knew the heat lamp. Oh, what a glorious piece of meat for a happy carnivore! We started our evening with the Palm Sunrise - delicious blood orange vodka, followed by an amazing Salad Gigi, then added creamed spinach and mashed potatoes to our steaks. No room for dessert. We will most definitely be back. It tasted tender, fresh and sweet, just like it just came off the boat (I am from Maine and know what they are supposed to taste like). The service is always impeccable.....from the front desk staff to the server. What a great dining experience. The ballgame traffic is always a challenge, but certainly worth the drive from Carlsbad, although it would be nice to have a Palm restaurant closer. There are so very many restaurants to choose from downtown. This is one of the best!!!! Service was excellent, food was prepared to our liking and the portion sizes are large to very large! We suggest sharing an entree if you have a smaller appetite. We used the bread to sop up the left over butter. Didn't want to waste a drop! The bone-in ribeye was perfect as usual. The special 18 oz. boneless ribeye with portobello mushrooms, lobster, and bordelaise sauce was interesting. The steak was cooked to a perfect black & blue with blackened seasoning on it. It could be a little stronger for the meat. The bordelaise sauce overcast the lobster so you really couldn't tell if you were eating lobster or mushroom as it robbed the lobster of its flavor. I would suggest just a garlic herb butter or maybe hollandaise, some kind of cream based sauce to let the lobster shine a little. The night we went was pretty quiet, so the usual din in the dining room was replaced by an elegant calm that really let us enjoy the food and attentive service.
