Diner Reviews
  • "Great spot for business lunch. Specials vary daily. "

  • "Recommended by a co-worker, we had a very enjoyable evening - attentive service and superior food - we will definitely be back again!"

  • "We were seated at our reservation time and the restaurant immediately and politely accommodated our +1 bringing our group total to 11. There was a group of about 15 sitting next to us and appeared to have arrived just before us. After 30 minutes, we hadn't ordered drinks and the other group was getting refills and their food. We realized that both groups and a few tables were sharing one server. Listening to my entire senior staff grumble was PAINFUL. I asked the manager for better service and he sped things up for a few minutes but overall it was agonizingly slow. I'm still going to look around the Fi-di for some place that can quickly serve a large group."

  • "My husband and I, while visiting San Francisco, found a play to see at the Eureka Theater in the Financial District. I did an online search of the area to locate a restuarant. It is always a pleasure to discover a new restaurant and enjoy the experience. We ate a light pre-theater dinner of pizza margherita and grilled asparagus; both delicious. Our favorite find was a "seasonal cocktail" called 'scotchtail'; it was delicious!"

  • "You don't need to eat here --- your money works at any other restaurant that has mediocre Italian food. The service started off pretty good but TANKED. They had (1) server for the entire restaurant. The "owner" apparently has no clue how successful restaurants are managed. To make matters worse, he's got a really bad attitude. There are so many great restaurants in San Francisco - this place doesn't belong here."

  • "we often go with a group, either family or friends. we always feel very welcomed by the staff and the warm well designed interior. it is a great place to go and share food and try lots of different things. everything is good. we sometimes bring our grandchildren and they are accommodating. if they have a special tasting menu for a holiday or special occasion-do it! it is so delicious and fun."

  • "We have nothing bad to say about this restaurant other than there are many more in the area that are better in every category - especially at their price level!"

  • "The small town feel and the great food and service combine to make this a real find in downtown San Francisco. I love it when the owner is involved with every custom to make sure they are satisfied."

  • "We had a lovely waitress who was very attentive and very friendly. Very pleasant place to have a meal."

  • "The restaurant is spacious, comfortable, and with a moderate noise level. So many restaurants in SF are so cramped and eating right next to another table, that we really appreciated the privacy. The service was impeccable and every we ordered was very satisfying and delicious. We especially liked the pasta which was offered in smaller portions, so we were able to enjoy variety of other dishes."

  • "Palio has potential, but judging by special offers on discount sites,it is not there yet. This should not dissuade you as the pastas were marvelous, and the service excellent, and the physical setting attractive. The entrees were passable. Unfortunately, the main dining room was off limits due to a bus tour and the other dining room had a large noisy party. Try it and if you hit the right evening and stick with appetizers and pasta, you may have a winner."

  • "Too long of a wait between dishes; spent more time in the restaurant than I wanted"

  • "The food was excellent, great cocktail menu and wonderful service. My only complaint is that we were seated right behind and very close to a large table of people who were very loud, and it took away from the ambiance a bit. Overall I'd absolutely return as the food and service were perfect!"

  • "The pre fix meal for four was a great deal. The food was delicious and the staff and owner were terrific. I would definitely return."

  • "Classic Italian food, rotating seasonally through different regions of Italy. Love the wild mushroom risotto, a primi, on the prix-fixe menu. Also loved that the prix-fixe menu allowed choice of one soup or salad, one primi, and one secondi...we are not dessert eaters and usually prix fixe forces a dessert choice!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner very much. The Prix Fix menu gave us several good choices. Caesar salad was good especially as it offered anchovies. Lobster ravioli were great and the main course of veal was also. The drink menu was unusual and was included with the price. We would rather have had a glass of wine or basic mixed drink instead of the "special" combinations. Regular wine prices were all quite high. No special parking rate was offered anymore."
    Dined on 2/25/2014
  • "Average food, pasta was served cold, the veal was very tough. The only redeeming dishes were the chicken & the salad. Will not go back!"

  • "As a foodie, this place has good food, good service, but not outstanding (like a Perbacco level outstanding). Its very nice and easy to come here, great if your a tourist and with a family. Garage parking is across the street. Very pretty inside. Just nice."

  • "Pailo d'Asti was a very pleasant surprise, the menu was excellent, lots of gluten-free options. Our server was fabulous, very knowledgeable about the menu and the wines!"

  • "I thought the restaurant was just wonderful and our waitperson was the best. Food was delicious only comment a few crab shells in our pasta but the food was outstanding."

  • "I was underwhelmed by the Prix Fixe Valentines day food items. Much of the food seemed poorly prepared or as if it had been prepared much in advance and then heated up later. Definitely not worth the price. Will not be coming back."

  • "Waiter well versed in the menu, he even ordered an item that was not in the menu per our request. He didn't write down our orders; food came out promptly but he did forget one of our appetizers. Cocktails were excellent, tastey and well-balanced. The veal appetizer was delish. My Lasagne was excellent, my date's carbonara (special request) was lackluster at best. Semi-romantic, ambience became rather loud once a party of ~12 was seated near us. Overall tastey food, smaller portions, can be pricey."

  • "I was up to the challenge of planning a romantic Valentine's Day, for my first date, it was a wonderful experience and my date was very impressed, we had a wonderful time, the food was absolute perfection, The ambience was great and we dined through the menu for almost 3 hours with great conversation. The staff was very attentive to all my needs to make this a special occasion for me and my date. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone just having a wonderful evening, and first date, a second date, this is the difference between eating and dining. Thank you so much. Dr.Foote"

  • "We went here for the set menu for Valentines Day. We enjoyed the food and the service, but the ambiance was something to be desired. For a romantic day, the entire restaurant was lit up with every light on. You would think for a romantic day they would have turned the lights down, had it a little more romantic. We asked if they could dim the lights but they said they were all the way down. How about turning some of them off? It felt like a diner in there with the booths along the walls and tables in the middle with all the light shining hard down on every table. I can't recommend that I would send someone here for a romantic date. If you're going for the food and a business meeting, probably a good spot."

  • "Palio D"Asti makes you feel like you are dining somewhere in Northern Italy. The menu is authentic and delicious. We especially enjoyed the wild boar lasagna, gnocchi with wild mushrooms and duck legs with polenta. There is a wood burning oven for pizza. The staff is friendly and efficient. We highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "What a great dining experience! Pleasant greeting on arrival, quickly shown to our table and a server (who by the way was bar manager helping out due to short staff) who was very helpful and attentive. I had the snapper special and it was perfect! My companion had the veal and she described it as scrumptious. All in all great service, excellent food and nice ambiance. A real winner."

  • "Atmosphere great for business lunch. Wait staff attentive to our time constraint, allowed guests to have soup and desert and not make it a 2 1/2 hour lunch for a party of 6."

  • "I used to frequent Palio D'Asti in the early 90's and found it surprisingly familiar and friendly with wonderful food, staff, ambience. The bolognese was killer as was my kale salad. Service was excellent. Thank you all for making this a very pleasant dining experience and I will return."

  • "Our food was outstanding and the atmosphere was great. The service was poor and the Manager was better than our server who forgot about us numerous times. We had to ask the manager to bring our refill drinks and our additional food orders."

  • "Hello All, I am not recommending this restaurant. It took us over two and a half hours to receive our entree. I requested that I speak with the manager regarding the exceptionally slow meal service. His response was "Well they have to cook your chicken. You do not want bloody chicken, do you?" Well, that did it! I have never eaten at a supposedly high quality restaurant where the manager laughed at our concerns. The chicken dish was dry and looked like it shrunk from being OVER Cooked! We had to ask for silverware, napkins, and never once did anyone bring us a refill of water or bread. Low class dining. Yes, they did comp a few less expensive items, but I would never eat at this establishment in the future, nor should you."

  • "Went to Palio d'Asti as a result of gift from a NYC friend. What a pleasant surprise. the decor is beautiful and the noise level is low. The food was most delicious and the service was outstanding. I will return and bring friends. It is a very comfortable restaurant. The manage and waitress were very attentive. I highly recommend you give this gem a try. You will be delighted. On another note, each table has a glass dispenser filled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The vinegar is in the shape of grapes within the larger container, so they can be poured separately. It made for a beautiful table sculpture. I ended up buying two for me and a friend."

  • "Waiter somehow mixed up order of squash soup, for squash ravioli, but that was OK -- he comped us the ravioli, which I enjoyed for lunch the next day. We had that soup, a swordfish carpaccio, the spaghetti with veal (meatballs and bacon), and a side of sprouts. The last was lackluster -- a bit softer and blander than ideal -- but not actually bad; the pancetta helped. Everything else was excellent. The fish carpaccio was well balanced and fresh. The veal bacon was deliciously smokey and the pasta well made. We also had cocktails; the pomegranate Crush is a standout. The Zenzucca, with pumpkin syrup and cinnamon, is sweet enough to be considered a dessert, but it's tasty, and novel. I need to go back to try the pizzas; they looked great."

  • "We booked a going away dinner for a great executive and were highly disappointed in the entire experience. We were seated right away however the server did nto come to take the order for over 20 min. The attention seemed to be lacking. The food was quite disappointing and restaurant was empty. All in all we will not be back."

  • "My fish was bland. But a friend had the pumpkin ravioli which was delicious"

  • "The menu was a four course dinner. Our first courses included soup, salad, swordfish carpaccio, and the hit of the evening, polenta fries. The pasta course included all the favorites--only the butternut squash ravioli disappointed (amaretti cookie crumbs just didn't work). Beef and fish dishes were great, but we were all jealous of the pork shank. Cannoli was truly special, but the Tiramisu was also excellent. The servers were excellent and staff had noted our comments and ensured that our table was convenient for our father, who is in a wheel chair."
