I've eaten here for work a few times including some group dinners, but this time I went on my own dime with friends who we haven't seen in a long time. Context is all the difference. This place was fun as in rollicking good time. The portly maitre 'd sold us on the egg yoke fettuccine with shaved truffle that was bought at auction and flown from Alba, Italy 48 hours after capture. We were a little skeptical though none of us ever really had fresh truffles, but served this way (and with that presentation) we were knocked off our feet. It's a seasonal dish--from the first rains to the first frost. The pork soaked in milk, slowly braised with creme polenta and fennel gratin melted in your mouth. The mixed seafood grilled seafood plate was pretty good--squid was a little tough (maybe stick with pasta). Anyway, it was delightful evening.

I was excited to finally try this place, their menu looks very appealing. We were seated in a nice booth straight away, the restaurant was about half full. The service started out okay but later slowed down quite a bit. We had to wait a long time to place our food order and also for a second glass of wine (although they made up for it by giving us an extra half glass free). I think they were just understaffed. The food was okay. I had the risotto special which had a weird taste, probably the cheese on top. The meatballs were good but you could get the same if not better in any other Italian restaurant. My favourite item was probably the hazelnut cake and ice cream for dessert. Overall, not bad but you can probably do better in this area.

Hard to find a great dining option for a last-minute decision to drive into city for dinner. Restaurant atmosphere was not very inviting, waiter was really harried and service was slow, and food was good, but not great. Had the Caesar salad (very good), arancini (good), spaghetti and meatballs (good), and funghi pizza with roasted garlic (good, but a bit flat in taste). When you pay that much, you want the food and the overall experience to be better.

I made this reservation last minute and we had a good meal/value here. There was a slight problem with one of the dishes and the management apologized and brought a replacement. They made every effort to correct the situation. The service was good and food was decent.

Not on the "beaten path" but well worth finding this gem located on the border between the financial district and Chinatown. The service was impeccable, and the food was excellent and well-presented. I had a wonderful burrata, veal piccata, and finished with a formaggi misti. The wine list is good, and it is flexible enough for a single diner, with a good list of half-bottles. I will be coming back whenever I am in SF!

I have have been to Palio's 3 different times for all different occasions. The first time was to catch up with my manager after her returning from a business trip, it was quiet and easy to get through everything we needed to. The next time was with my mangers daughter and she is 7, she loved the gluten free pizza! The last time was to grab a nice dinner before some friends and I went to see a performance at the theater. It fit all the occasions perfectly. The art on the wall is faint but beautiful and everyone was very kind, the food could have came a little faster but other than that everything was great and I plan to return. If you tell them you have some where to be after they willl speed things up a little for you.

Warm caponata as an appetizer set the tone for the meal. It's hard to find caponata in any form and the generous portion provided made a wonderful appetizer (would have been right-sized for two). My test of Northern Italian cuisine is veal piccata, and this may have been the best version I've had outside Italy. Plenty of sizable capers, just enough lemon to keep it bright without makiing the dish sour, tender veal pounded to appropriate thinness, and a smooth sauce with just enough oiliness to complement the lemon. Haricot verts were cooked perfectly, still crunchy but without the still-raw taste that some restaurants seem to think is desirable. Definitely a place I will return to.

The margarite pizza was undercooked so the crust was soggy still. The well conceived calamari, shrimp and veggie appetizer was also undercooked resulting in doughy texture for the breading. And alas the nightly special of fresh swordfish was way overcooked so the fish was dry and tasteless. Good ingredients, good service: poor execution.

Service was slow (perhaps not enough servers). Food was good (our group enjoyed pasta dishes including meatballs and spaghetti and fettuccine with fava beans). Romaine salad was good but could have used more dates and cheese. Assorted cookies and biscotti were ok and presentation was unimaginative. Loved the French press coffee. Space is large so conversation is easy. Owner served some dishes and was very warm and welcoming.

Decor, food and overall atmosphere is outdated and from the late 80-90s. For the prices charged they need a serious update and a general scrub down and cleaning. The place and restrooms are dingy. The china are worn out. If this place was a dive restaurant with cheaper prices then this review would have been so critical.

We had theater tickets with a 7:00pm curtain time so dinner needed to be fairly fast. Ae 5:50, Palio d'Asti is very uncrowded and our waiter was excellent, so getting food fast was not a problem. We shared several antipasti, a salad, a pizza, and a pasta. The pasta was amazing, the salad good, but the rest of the food was very disappointing. The space is lovely with well spaced tables, so that even if crowded would be quieter than normal, and they clearly handle large crowds well - and large parties in their special rooms. It is obviously a great place for large groups. Great for a couple that just orders salad and pasta. Maybe the main dishes are okay, we didn't try one.
