Palio d'AstiOne of SF's Best Italian RestaurantFood here is consistently good. Especially love the Calamari and the pasta with the crab and arabiata sauce, which are staples. Some of the appetizers are on the small side, like the stuffed single artichoke. Prefer meat entrees like the rack of lamb to the seafood entrees, which can be on the bland side. Service was very friendly and professional. We enjoyed grilled spring onions with asparagus and stuffed artichokes as appetizers. The risotto, pizza and pasta entrees we shared were all delicious and nicely complemented with a side dish of fresh peas with mint. We brought our own wine to share for dinner, taking advantage of the reasonale corkage fee, but we enjoyed an excellent proseco to start, as the day was warm and it went well with the appetizers. Dessert was outstanding, high recommend the biscotti, gelattos and creme brulee.
Service was excellent, our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly in the traditional style. Our table was in a great location, the staff was very helpful and took care of us and made suggestions (that were all excellent, BTW). The food was first cabin. If you enjoy excellent food that is prepared perfectly & excellent customer service...give Palio a try. Service was a bit slow, it wasn't busy, so that wasn't the problem. We had a bit too much "down time". BUT, if you are out for a relaxed dinner and want great food along with a good experience, then please go to Palio! Our waiter, Martini, (how do you like that name!?!) was incredibly personable! I had a special request, wasn't sure if they could/would be agreeable. The owner himself, Mr. DeGrande, came to our table, he was very pleasant . He came back to our table later to check in. If we visit San Fran again, we will certainly return to Palio d'Asti! I just hope that we will get Martini again for service! The food was outstanding for a reasonable price - you pay for the number of courses you order, basically independent of what you actually order. The wood-fired pizza was really terrific. I left my computer at the restaurant and the owner drove it to my hotel and met me in the lobby with it. He could have easily waited until the following day and had me pick it up. Instead he went the extra mile to ensure his customer was happy.
