A word from Pala
Voted "Best Pizza" by Daily News readers. Pizza is taken seriously at this Lower East Side pizza restaurant. Chef/Owner Gigio Palazzo creates oblong Roman pies made with your choice of an ORGANIC MULTIGRAIN Crust or GLUTEN FREE crust. Palá is known for fresh, innovative pies such as "Zucca" pumpkin puree, pancetta and smoked scamorza cheese and "Bufala Cruda" oven melted cherry tomatoes, fresh buffalo mozzarella and whole basil leaves. Pizzas are served on long wooden "Pala's" or pizza peels and are excellent for sharing in groups. In addition to pizzas, Palazzo serves up homemade specialties like "arancini" and "fiori di zucca" not to mention an impressive list of salads, pastas and desserts. GLUTEN FREE and VEGAN menus available. Wine, beer and a full bar top off the experience at Palá. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "There is nothing especial about the food. If you have to eat there go for the pizzas."

  • "Pala may have slightly altered the ingredients for their GF crust; however, it remains the best GF pizza my wife and I have ever had. The service was good, even though our server admitted it was only her third day on the job. She was resourceful in trying to learn her position and it did not interfere with our dining experience. One addition to the beverage menu was gluten free beer- which was excellent. Pizza and beer for GF diners...and both excellent...finally! We can't wait to return."

  • "Pala has a great combination of great food and great service. But probably what's best is that their gluten-free menu is not only extensive, but delicious. Although I don't have celiac disease, I've eaten gluten-free pizza here with people who do, and it's really excellent. Staff is very helpful in navigating the menu for gluten-free and other allergy issues. I highly recommend."

  • "..and regular people too!! I'm a gluten-free vegan, but I work in the restaurant industry so none of my friends are as restricted and they often feel like there's no where we can all go and get an awesome meal together. This is it! It was great, our server was so sweet. I definitely recommend a reservation because the place is tight and there's not a ton of room to stand around and wait and not be constantly in the way. My gluten-eating, carnivorous date was as satiated as I was! It was great :)"

  • "The waiter and our food was fabulous. 5 girls out on a Friday during Lent had a fabulous, meatless, alcohol-filled Friday night and enjoyed ourselves greatly. We each drank and ate plenty, and we barely paid $50/ person. We had an especially great time after I lit my sleeve on fire while leaning over the podium to tell the host that our party was running late and we were going to be plus 1. The waiter was well-versed in the items on the menu and was able to recommend, everything, literally everything that we ordered. Thank you! We will definitely be going back, and I will be recommending it to anyone that asks. We did sit at the long table that is shared though, I wish we could have had our own table, but sometimes things happen!"

  • "The service is great, the staff is so friendly and accommodating. It's a fantastic place to eat with people with gluten issues, both gluten full and gluten free options were delicious and there are a lot of options for Celiacs. The beer list could be expanded."

  • "I've gone here with both friends and family and always enjoy the dining experience. Whether your are a "regular" eater or "gluten/vegan" eater, theere is something absoutely delicious for anyone to enjoy."

  • "Love this restaurant and the amazing food. The space is cozy and dim- not great for groups since the tables are pretty stacked. They offer loads of pizza and pasta (almost all can be made GF too!) and everything is delicious."

  • "Pala has great options for those who are gluten intolerant. Our server was very knowledgable and helpful with diet restrictions. They have one large table for big parties, so make sure you make deserve toons ahead of time if you're going with a larger group."

  • "Nice place for vegan people liking pizza. You can find a large selection of vegan (Italian) food , but also traditional Italian food."

  • "Ah, Pala. Are you looking for some yummy, gluten-free pizza and calamari? If so, come on down to this dark, cramped former garage. You will sit cheek-to-jowl with your fellow hipster diners. But it's all about the food right? Well, not quite. The food is very good but you will find some of the worst service in New York City standing right by your table. Don't spill your water as that was enough to send the pretentious android - oh wait, I mean waiter - into a tailspin complete with pained looks and sarcastic comments. To pretentious waiter who tried to to ruin our dinner: your time is coming - what goes around comes around. One day you will be treated like garbage, in a restaurant, and just know that we will be laughing somewhere."

  • "We loved the food at this place, and the service was amazing. Bartender and servers were helpful and funny. And most of their menu is available gluten-free!"

  • "I found this restaurant to be a little too self-important...it took itself too seriously. I can see this being a good option for people who are gluten free or vegan as there are a lot of options but as far as a restaurant for everyone else there are many more options with friendlier wait staff and more reasonable prices."

  • "I have been here three times now, twice with a small group and once with a big group for my birthday. Every time I've had pleasant waiters and the food has always been the best part (keeps me coming back). Portions are big and enough to share, while prices are cheap. It's a small restaurant so it's not too noisy and it's very cute and fun. Highly recommend it. Everyone in my birthday group were already asking if we could come back the next weekend."

  • "This restaurant has options for almost every style of eating (GF, vegan, vegetarian, meat eater..) and the food is GREAT! It's so awesome to find a restaurant where I (a vegan) can go on a date and not be "that chick making the guy try 'rabbit food'"! The food's delicious however I've had mixed luck with servers. The bar staff is great though and very friendly, at least those I've experienced :)"

  • "SUCH a great place to go with anyone with food allergies etc-they have a full gluten free menu (gluten free pizza!) and LOTS of Vegan options, as well as "regular" options. NICE to have a place thats not exclusively "Vegan" or "Gluten Free"-and the food is great!"

  • "I took my wife to this restaurant as she has a gluten free diet. The food was amazing! Both the pizza and pasta dishes were off the charts. I am not gluten free but I dined on gluten free selections at Pala and I was so impressed. We will certainly return to this restaurant and recommend it to all of our friends. It is worth noting that the restaurant has a full non gluten-free menu as well as vegan options. The range on the menu makes it appropriate for everyone, regardless of their dietary restrictions. Don't, wait, go visit Pala now! You will not regret doing so!"

  • "i was so looking forward to pala! i have had some pretty great gluten-free pizza before.. but honestly even dominos gluten-free pizza was better than what i had. i order the zucchini gluten-free pizza. my gf ordered a regular pizza and thought it was pretty good... definitely not worth the price. so disappointed!! i was really excited. the service and the ambiance were great."

  • "Have been eating at Pala for years and booked a table for 2 friends visiting from Ireland as I had been raving about it - they arrived 10 mins late due to traffic and the table had already been given away. Very disappointing esp for a place that I recommended as a "must" when they came to visit...esp as one of them had a gluten allergy. They had to wait for a table since theirs was given away within minutes."

  • "We were looking for a "low impact" restaurant for New Year's eve. Pala had reservations and pasta. The menu was pretty simple -- I think because they make everything both gluten and gluten-free. We went for the gluten and were pretty happy with the food, though I would have enjoyed a larger selection. The portions were on the small side, which is fine because we're not big eaters."

  • "I wouldn't normally spend over ten dollars on a pizza, but Pala's gourmet pizzas (also offered as gluten free) made it totally worth the extra dough ;). You get four slices in a pizza, which makes it great to split two with another person- or multiples with a group of people."

  • "This place has the most amazing gluten free pizza in the world! I have tried 3 different pizzas here and love all of them. Would definitely love the Zucca! I came and was an hour late for my reservation and they were amazing and gave us speedy service to satisfy both us and the people who reserved our table next!"

  • "We found this randomly online for dinner and were very pleased with the the food. It was honestly the best gluten free pizza I've found so far. The regular pizza was also top notch. I really liked that they had not only a regular menu but menus to suit gluten-free and vegan diets as well. The waiter was great and very knowledgable. Our only criticism is that the wine prices were higher than we realized and the price of a bottle was a little unclear. But everything was very good and we would definitely recommend to others."

  • "I'm so sorry to say that I had a bad experience here after spending a lot of money. I've been going to Pala for years, but no longer. Their staff is very rude. In my view nice staff far exceeds good food and Pala has fallen very short the past two times."

  • "I've been to Pala a few times for the gluten free/dairy free pizza (since almost no place in the city does this, let alone does this well). Simply put, their GF/DF pizza is perfect. They work with the ingredients to create a delicious dish on their own, as opposed to trying to recreate the pizza I once ate before the development of food allergies. Normally I go with one or two other people, and the space is great for that. Recently I went to Pala or my friends Bachelorette party, which was a very low key event. All other people in the party ate gluten and dairy and spent the night raving about their food. Whether it's the lamb sausage pizza, or the butternut squash, everyone was impressed and food was devoured."

  • "It's a bit difficult to find a place that can easily cater to a group of carnivores, vegetarians, and the gluten-free, but somehow Pala pulled it off with panache. I much appreciated that none of our group members was made to feel at all out of place by virtue of her dietary restrictions. We especially liked the vegetarian spinach pizza with ricotta, and the tiramisu was served in adorable little jars with spoons. A great spot to start the evening with wonderful food, wine, and friends, and it was an easy walk to the Bowery bars."

  • "I organized a party of 8. Apparently my OT reservation was just tentative. I got a voicemail from the host, but no introduction or callback number, just a snarky huff, "okay, then," and hang-up. When I called back, I confirmed the res, and I was told that whole party must arrive on time or we'd lose our reservation. 7 of 8 arrive 10 minutes early. I met the host, and she told me that we'd need to wait for the remaining guest. The last guest arrived 2 minutes early. Then, I was told that the table was not ready. 15 minutes later, the host told me that the table was ready and asked again if we had all arrived. I confirmed, but she counted heads, out loud. The server was great; he took very good care of us."

  • "I took my fiance here for his birthday this past weekend and the food and service was amazing. We got to sit outside and enjoy the nice fall night--the whole meal was delicious, started with gluten free calamari to GF pizza and GF dessert--perfect for people with food allergies. So many different options for pizza, they all looked amazing. Will definitely be back!!"
