A word from Painted Pony
A culinary island in Southern Utah, the Painted Pony brings a touch of class--and intriguing flavors--to St. George. The restaurant, tucked away in Ancestor Square, is exceptionally clean and cozy, with contemporary art, fresh flowers, and -- in the evening -- a top notch romantic atmosphere with subdued lighting and patio dining.

If your surroundings don't clue you in, your first glance at the menu will. Painted Pony is not your standard fare. Contemporary American cuisine evidently doesn't mean just another good steakhouse, and the simply written food descriptions promise something new and intriguing for your palate.

The Painted Pony has perfected the fine art of using fresh ingredients and delicate flavoring. An exceptional wine list, generous portions, attentive service, and reasonable prices will convince you to return to "the Pony" anytime you're in St. George.

Diner Reviews
  • "This was our third visit to The Painted Pony and our least favorite. Little on the menu jumped out at me. I had a rib eye that was overcooked; the blue cheese salad dressing on my iceberg wedge was white, not particularly "cheesey" The new chicken entree was Moroccan, but paired with a risotto, which I thought was odd. Great and pleasant service, though."

  • "I come from a land down under, where women glow and men write restaurant review. The Painted Pony was engaging and very pleasant dinning. The service was attentive and appropriate. Although the menu was not particularly adventurous, the meals we chose were well presented and delicious. The wine list catered for most tastes and was no overly priced. The greatest problem for someone out of town is finding the place!"

  • "Best rack of lamb. Remarkable service an overall great dinning experience. I'm looking forward to dinning there again. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling to St George or living there. In short it was a "Fabulous" dinning experience."

  • "Excellent food using only fresh ingredients. A bit pricey, but one of the best meals I have had in some time. Will need to try out the patio next time."

  • "If you are from Utah, this is going to seem like a 5-star joint. I say that because I'm a southern Utah native and know what I thought was excellent food growing up! -Service was amazing. Wine knowledge great, offered to decanter, etc. For an appetizer, my wife and I shared the quail. It was decent, but tasted a bit dry and chicken like. For our main course, my wife had the lamb, myself the rib eye. The lamb utilized bread crumbs that I can't explain except to describe them as tempura like, which distracted from the marginal lamb. My rib eye was no better on flavor than what you might find at Texas Roadhouse. The blue cheese fritters were a bit on the heavy side for the rib eye. It would be better suited with a simple blue cheese alone."

  • "Our favorite restaurant in St. George. Everything they make is wonderful. We love the beet salad, carrot jalapeno soup, steaks, pork chops, and the duck. Always save room for dessert."

  • "We always can count on an excellent meal at Painted Pony. Our waiter was friendly, attentive but not overly so. The Portabella sandwich is fantastic along with on of the best house salads around. The carrot-jalapeno soup is always a great starter. I had a Reuben which had some of the best corned beef I can remember. Great lunch."

  • "Three of us dined recently at the Painted Pony, our favorite place to eat when we visit St. George. We have never been disappointed. The hangar steak, the pork chop and a new special, a pea and parsnip ravioli dish, along with their sides were all splendid. We shared, so we know! The bacon wrapped date started was also a pleasant combination of flavors. The ambience is standard southwestern, and the noise level can be high, depending on the table and the crowd. The only serious drawback I can see is that it is not easily accessible. The elevator doesn't stop at the mezzanine level, so the only way to avoid stairs is to use a ramp from the ground, and I would think the trip up the ramp could be a challenge for some."

  • "Our waiter, John was great. He knew the menu inside and out. The french onion soup was very good. I felt it was the perfect appetizer in both taste and size. The best FOS I have ever had. Duck was delicious. ambiance and atmosphere perfect. I brought a group with us and scheduled in advance and they handled everything else. I highly recommend this restaurant. Thank you for a great night."

  • "We went in for lunch and weren't able to choose just one item to eat so we ordered a whole variety of items to share. Our server had the kitchen split it so we had our own portion instead of a crowded table full of plates and serving utensils! It made all the difference. The patio looked like it would be nice in warm weather and had nice flowers on it, despite the cold wind. The food was delicious! Well balanced flavors, innovative use of ingredients, and it fit the season nicely. We then wandered around town for a bit, stopped at some shops, then WENT BACK for dessert! It was superb, fit the season, and was plated very artistically. Mexican coffee with a mountain of whipped cream finished off our food filled afternoon. EAT HERE."

  • "The food was extremely tasty. The chicken fricasse was pure heaven, and the ravioli was just as good. But be aware walking in here that entrees range from $25-35+. Be prepared to spend a little money. However they have goblets to drink out of to make you feel like a king/queen, so that was a lot of fun! Definitely recommended."

  • "The food was just ok. My husband had a steak, it wasn't the greatest. I had the Ravioli, it was good, but had to pay separate to get a salad. The bread was not the greatest either. I love going to a good fine dining restaurant where they have wonderful fresh baked bread made from scratch. This bread tasted like it came from the local grocery store. Our server was attentive, but didn't have much of a personality. I accidentally spilled some balsamic vinegar on the table cloth and the bus person covered my side of the table with a napkin! My husband called it the "napkin of shame", but we had a good laugh over it, but it was kind of insulting. I love the ambiance, but would probably not go back."

  • "The Painted Pony is, quite simply, an excellent restaurant. We discovered the restaurant on Open Table and Trip Advisor. The food was outstanding in all respects. I ordered the carrot soup which was wonderful as it had a little kick of jalapeno. My wife ordered a steak which was cooked to perfection. I had the monkfish as a special and it was delicious as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food, the servers, and the space were superior; one of the best meals we've had this year (and we don't commonly throw out superlatives unless we mean them). The mixed green salad was fantastic (and not even my first choice--you'd run out of the beet salad). I appreciated the quality of the tenderloin and also the fact that I could order a more reasonable amount of food (instead of the huge portions some restaurants force you to eat). We both noticed how attentive & carefully synchronized the wait staff were. When we're in St. George, we'll dine with you."

  • "We enjoyed a romantic Valentine's dinner at the Pony. As is our usual experience at this restaurant, the food and service were excellent! We both had the monkfish special - my husband with the scallops and I had the always fabulous beet salad. Our server, Brice, was attentive and helpful thoughout the meal. It is no wonder that this is our favorite restaurant in the area and that we saw several of our friends enjoying a night out here as well!"

  • "Delicious food! Great lunch prices! Excellent service. Perfectly atmospheric! We will definitely be back again and again. We had the rosemary chicken sandwich and the beef brisket panini and both were fantastic and so was their raspberry lemonade. And the small house salad that comes with the sandwiches is so yummy! That is rare to be able to say that about almost any restaurant so I think that really says something about the quality of this place. I wish we had been hungry enough for dessert!"

  • "My wife and I have eaten at the Painted Pony on a number of occasions and have always considered this as one of our favorite places to go. We eat there every Valentine Day and on our Anniversary every year. In addition, we take friends here from out of town and always recommend the Painted Pony when someone from out of town asks for recommendations to a good restaurant. Food has always been outstanding with absolutely fabulous service. We been going to the Painted Pony for the past five years and never have had a bad experience."

  • "The Painted Pony was selected by my husband for our special Valentine's Day dinner. Unlike many other couple's we took our 10 year old twins with us because they too are part of the love of and meaning for us. That being said, we were in aww of the menu choices and the option for our children as well. Our waiter and wait staff did not disappoint with appropriate timing without being intrusive to our ongoing family conversation. The food was excellent! Although they did have a special V-Day menu, we opted to order from the regular selections. I had the rib-eye and came with creamed brussel sprouts and it came ordered to perfection, yum! I think I ordered the perfect wine to accompany it, Ste. Michelle Merlot! Enough said!!!"

  • "I travel and stay thru St. George so I can eat at the Painted Pony. The food is perfectly prepared and presented. The staff is well trained and attentive. You are never rushed or left waiting for anything. I find the wine list diverse enough for most including some local favorites. I have never had a bad meal and I love the desserts. Can't wait to find a reason to go back."

  • "Painted Pony is the place to go in St George, especially when you have something special to celebrate. Very creative menu, food well presented and delicious. We started with the parmesan encrusted asparagus appetizer. I followed with a spinach salad. For entrees, my wife had the coconut shrimp. I went with the tuna, seared and surrounding noodles with edamame. Both were excellent. Food comes when you're ready for it.There is no rush to get on to the next course. I highly recommend."

  • "We head to St. George, UT for a weekend get away at least once a year and have looked forward to our meal at the Painter Pony each time. We always appreciate the professional staff and the gorgeous presentation of a fabulous and interesting meal. The fig appetizer and beet salad are my favorite and it is often hard to try anything different than the duck. When I do, I'm always pleased. My husband had the pork chop and couldn't decide if he enjoyed the perfectly prepared poached pear more than the succulent pork."

  • "Carrot soup was bland, no real kick though it is supposed to have a jalepeno in there. Served in a bland cup on a paper doily that had smudged carrot soup spilled on it before it came to the table. Ribeye was good, but nothing spectacular for $30 and for the PP's reputation. Spent $90 for 1 soup, one petite top sirloin, one ribeye, tip. Maybe if I was drunk, the experience would have been less unfortunate. Good, not great, food, nice place but spending that much in St. George for a "nice" dinner is kind of foolish. Plus, when we got up to leave, it looked like the local nursing home was having a night out on the town, and I'm 42, we felt like kids in there."
