A word from Painted Pony
A culinary island in Southern Utah, the Painted Pony brings a touch of class--and intriguing flavors--to St. George. The restaurant, tucked away in Ancestor Square, is exceptionally clean and cozy, with contemporary art, fresh flowers, and -- in the evening -- a top notch romantic atmosphere with subdued lighting and patio dining.

If your surroundings don't clue you in, your first glance at the menu will. Painted Pony is not your standard fare. Contemporary American cuisine evidently doesn't mean just another good steakhouse, and the simply written food descriptions promise something new and intriguing for your palate.

The Painted Pony has perfected the fine art of using fresh ingredients and delicate flavoring. An exceptional wine list, generous portions, attentive service, and reasonable prices will convince you to return to "the Pony" anytime you're in St. George.

Diner Reviews
  • "While visiting St. George on a house-hunting trip in July, my wife and I had dinner at the Painted Pony. From the hostess at the front, to our server(s) and helpers, the staff was attentive, professional and helpful at all times. However, it is the food that is the real star of this show. I had the beet salad (extraordinarily good), the pork chop (perfect) and the mango sorbet for dessert (wonderful). My wife had the filet and is still talking about how good it was. The wine list is excellent and fits the style of the food quite well. If you are in St. George, you owe it to yourself to experience dinner at the Painted Pony. It is in the historic district in northwest corner of Ancestors Square and well worth the trip."

  • "So. Utah is limited in terms of 'fine dining' and Painted Pony 'fills the bill'. The French Onion Soup is creative and 'to die for'."

  • "On our way home to Las Vegas from our cabin on Cedar Mountain my wife wanted a place to go out for a nice Father's Day meal. I turned to Open Table and was pleasantly surprised to find an intriguing restaurant in St George. The Painted Pony is tucked away in a quaint shopping village. We were immediately impressed with the decor. The service was attentive but not stuffy. Our waiters Brice and Dominik were great at helping make entree decisions. Our food was unique and had an amazing presentation and flavor. The almond stuffed dates wrapped in bacon were a delightful start. The beet salad was beautifully presented. The steaks were cooked to perfection. Painted Pony has done it right and is a great dining experience in St George!"

  • "I can't really say enough about this place. The food was terrific, service impeccable and wine fabulous. We had one of the best waitresses I have ever had at a restaurant . She knew when to be there and when to disappear. She also made some great suggestions- including dessert which we usually forego. But the lemon frozen soufflé was just to tempting!"

  • "Took my family here for a pre Father's Day dinner. This fine dining restaurant had a casual elegance. The food was not only inventive but delicious. One thing of particular note was how good the acoustics were. We heard little to no chatter from the table around us. Overall a very pleasant experience."

  • "For our 45th anniversary we went to our favorite St. George restaurant and, as usual, we were extremely happy with our food. Our waiter John was the perfect guide to the fare, and everything from the crab cakes, squab, prosciutto-wrapped chicken breast to the perfect Italian-style sorbets in three fruit flavors (just made!) was perfect. We ended the meal with a perfect cup of coffee roasted by a local company in nearby La Verkin, which was a pleasant discovery. Although their wine list is excellent, we brought a special bottle from our own wine cellar for the occasion (they allow this useful privilege). All in all, the perfect evening."

  • "As always the Painted Pony was superb. We don't think it's capable of being otherwise. From salad through lunch to desert and wine there simply is no better....Bryce, by the way is a very fine server."

  • "Excellent food, excellent service - and would definitely recommend to fellow travelers. The beet salad is fantastic - as were the crab cakes. "

  • "We went to Painted Pony as a special birthday dinner. The service is amazing and impeccable. The food is beyond description with a most beautiful presentation that makes it delicious well before it ever hits your palate. I will definitely be going back without occasion to try more of their delicious food. "

  • "The Painted Pony is a little difficult to find, tucked away upstairs in a square with other more prominantly located and signed restaraunts, but it is well worth the effort to find. Beautifully prepared dishes utulizing fresh ingredients are lovingly served by a very attentive staff. Good wine list is an added bonus. We were in town on vacation and celebrated our anniversary while in St, George and the staff helped make our special evening more special with the premium table, service, meal, and well wishes. They even gave us a celebratory desert topped with a candle."

  • "My wife and I were beginning a couple of weeks of hiking in the Southwest and decided to find a spot to eat in St. George. We found Painted Pony on Open Table and we're glad we did -- we had a very nice evening. Food, service and ambience were all very nice. And I thought it ironic that we enjoyed a great bottle of wine just steps from Brigham Young's summer home!"

  • "Our experience was very good -- the waiter was very attentive, but not overbearing; the wines were great; our entrees were very tasty; and our dessert was very good. Would definitely return next year for another anniversary."

  • "This is the most upscale restaurant in St. George, and I like to take out of town guests here. The service and atmosphere are excellent and a good selection of wines is available. The price is reasonable considering the quality. "

  • "What can I say . . . . from the time we arrived at the Host's Station to tell her who we were until we left the experience was outstanding. They accommodated our request to sit outside, the food was unreal and the service in my humble opinion is the best in St. George of all the restaurants we've dined in. The crab cakes are wonderful and the Coconut Shrimp appetizer is a meal unto itself. Wonderful flavors and incredible presentations. Our compliments to the chef(s)!!!"

  • "My husband and I were so looking forward to eating here. I ordered the monk fish and he ordered the ribeye. The ribeye was ordered medium rare and came out uncooked. Truly raw. Then sent back and then of course came out over cooked. The monk fish tasted bad and was over cooked. Our server was horrified. He was gracious and comped our entries which was totally unnecessary. Lovely atmosphere and amazing service. "

  • "We enjoyed excellent service for our dinner. We had mussels, an entree salad and the hanger steak. Portions are oversized and we had no room for dessert. The mussels were from Chile, good sized and well flavored. The scallop salad was a tremendous value. The steak was very large and perfectly prepared. "

  • "I came here for lunch with a friend. We came early so the noise level was just right. The food was amazing and light for both of us. The waiter was not too attentive but with so few people, it didn't really matter too much as we had so much "catch-up" talk to do. The alcove we were put in was quiet and private. I had the coconut shrimp and my friend had a nice salad. We both had some tasty soup with amazing flavors."

  • "The food and service were good. The server was the better of the two. Last year the food was worth $35 a plate. This year it was worth $25. The online reservation noted a birthday and asked for a nice seat. Place empty at 5pm and neither happened nor was noted."

  • "have lived in may great places and have tried most top restaurants in each area. This is a great little gem for St. George. We've lived here for just 5 months and have been there for lunch and dinner and George's corner for breakfast more than a few times. It is one of our local favs. Would recommend it in a heartbeat. The wine list is not too shabby either. Their signature carrot soup is yummy and their steamed mussels are mouth watering not to mention their lamb...YUM!"

  • "Of all the places we have dined in this state, The Painted Pony is still on the top of our list. Every menu item we have tried has been excellently envisioned and prepared, with all flavors and textures blending perfectly. The staff is exceptionally attentive and knowledgeable about the dishes, and always courteous. The atmosphere inside the old sandstone brick building is very pleasant, and the outside elevated patio area is great when the weather permits. We highly recommend the Pony to all, and will go so far as to plan a trip to St. George solely to be able to visit this fine restaurant."

  • "Our waiter was outstanding. I told him that I was going to have a "big flavor" night. He was very helpful in recommending a flow of flavors throughout the menu. His knowledge of whiskey wasn't the best (but you can't have everything). We ended up pairing the bacon wrapped figs appetizer with a High West Double Rye. It was a great start to a very good meal."

  • "We enjoy many fine restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we were really pleased to have a great restaurant experience at The Painted Pony. The service was outstanding, the food was innovative. Try the beet salad as an appetizer. Great food!"

  • "I took my wife to The Painted Pony for our 20 year wedding anniversary. I had stopped by the restaurant earlier in the day and asked if the staff could bring a gift, that I had for my wife, to our table after we ordered drinks. Our server brought our drinks and the gift and my wife was very surprised. We had a very nice dinner, the food was great (as usual) and the service was outstanding! Our evening would not have been nearly as nice at a "chain" restaurant because our server would not have been able to hear our drink order over the noise! The folks at The Painted Pony are terrific, the atmoshere is perfect, the location is unique and I'm already making my plans for our 21st wedding anniversary! "

  • "This was our third visit to The Painted Pony and our least favorite. Little on the menu jumped out at me. I had a rib eye that was overcooked; the blue cheese salad dressing on my iceberg wedge was white, not particularly "cheesey" The new chicken entree was Moroccan, but paired with a risotto, which I thought was odd. Great and pleasant service, though."

  • "I come from a land down under, where women glow and men write restaurant review. The Painted Pony was engaging and very pleasant dinning. The service was attentive and appropriate. Although the menu was not particularly adventurous, the meals we chose were well presented and delicious. The wine list catered for most tastes and was no overly priced. The greatest problem for someone out of town is finding the place!"
