Diner Reviews
  • "Paggi has been there a while but still makes a good meal. Not much white tablecloth pretension, but some. The dishes are artful, a little small but well thought out and pretty good. Very uncrowded inside because most folks like the patio. Their valet only parking lot is annoying and seems a little abusive of customers money (I parked a a meter down the street). Wine is overpriced and limited."

  • "everything was fantastic for happy hour except the beet salad. terrible which is very unusual for Paggi. The pickled jicama was so pickled I couldn't talk after I ate it. THey should have left the jicama alone and served more beets on the salad"

  • "We have been to PH many times over the years. This was the last time we will go for three reasons: 1. The menu is unclear. While it is divided into four sections, one of which is Starters, there are appetizer portions mixed in with the other three sections, Green, Sea, and Land. A gentleman in our party order fish from the Sea section. It was an appetizer portion, very small. I know he went away hungry! 2. The service was kurt at best. Not more I can say about it. 3. Our food took a long time coming out and was not hot, but luke warm when it did arrive. Too many options in Austin for mediocrity to be paid for."

  • "I have been to Paggi House for brunch before and decided to get together with friends to celebrate my birthday there. To call the service horrible is an understatement. A person in our party of 8 ordered eggs and never got them and glasses of water, cups of tea and cups of coffee went empty for 10 minutes before we even saw the waiter to ask for a refill. Paggi House serves a great brunch, but after my experience on Sunday I would say it's horrible for groups and would certainly hesitate about going back there myself. And of course, because there were eight of us in our party, we had a mandatory 20% gratuity, so there was no way to monetarily express our displeasure with the service."

  • "Lots of dinner options. Chef accommodated a request for a vegan main dish. My vegetable dish was very good, but on the small size. Good wine list."

  • "The food was delicious!. The locale was simple and stylish! The only thing that was missing when compared to Wink and Uchiko, was the service. The server was not invested. By the end of the evening my wife and I left the restaurant without this feeling true confort and satisfaction from the experience."

  • "My girlfriend and I agreed that the food was just "ok" and the service was awful. I made a reservation on OpenTable; upon our arrival the hostess declined our request to sit outside, claiming that since we didn't mention it in our reservation, we would have to sit inside. The atmosphere inside was comfortable, but the walls were completely bare - no art or pictures anywhere. There was nothing to look at as we waited for our food, which took unusually long to prepare and serve. It was an hour before we got our appetizer, and another half hour before we got our main course. The mushrooms (appetizer) were great. The scallops dish was good, but the duck breast dish was undercooked, very dry, and overly salted."

  • "Great restaurant with fabulous food but it was the service that really made it outstanding. Our waitress knew each item on the menu incredibly well as well as the entire wine list. She was fantastic! The lamb entree was out of this world but the mussels were a little too salty for our taste. I would also recommend the cheese board as a starter."

  • "Sat in the patio, and while it was nice, it was very windy and the tent was pushing over our table. We moved to the bar and waited about 10 mins for service. We ordered our entrees, and then another 20 minutes later the waiter came and asked us if we were ready to place our order again. He had forgotten to put in the order originally, he apologized and said he would have the chef put a rush on our order. While the food was tasty, the buffet food was good but so much for the rush on our entrees, as they were only lukewarm. The waiter didn't charge us for our drinks due to his mistake (we had coffee, juice and tea). Would have liked to just have a manager apologize, wasn't even asking for a discount, just an acknowledgment, never saw one."

  • "This eating establishment is both upscale and comfortable, the old of a historic registry home featuring comfortable, modern decor. The wait staff is very attentive, the menu creative and the wine list, although not lengthy very adequate to most needs. We enjoy the fact that it is located very near the Long Center for Performing Arts and other performance venues making it an easy walk to and from the venues. On this dinning occasion we were encouraged to stay parked at Paggi House while we enjoyed the Austin Symphonies performance. I'm know we will continue to return for many great meals in the future. P.S. A great Sunday Brunch location."

  • "My wife and I took a friend for his first visit to this true gem. We had built it up huge so they had a lot to live up to. Paggi did NOT disappoint! From the appetizer right through to cappucino and dessert each step was remarkable. The expresson creme brule was an awsome finishing touch. We will all be back."

  • "This would be a fun place to sit outside for happy hour. My mom and I wanted a light meal and it was everything but light. It was very rich. Our waiter was terrible. He brought us the wrong items three times, then seemed annoyed that we were annoyed. The best thing there was the bread on the appetizers. The Mahi Mahi was great too just RICH FOOD!!"

  • "So according to our 'server' who couldn't move any faster because her skirt was so short and her heels too high. We had to wait 10-15 min for every round or anything we ordered. She said they were short a bartender. But offered no discount or birthday comp or a managers apology. Ridiculous sad service for paying $10 per cocktail!!!! We tipped 22% anyway- because we are F&B people. I could go on but wasted enough time."

  • "Where has the old Paggi house gone? Extensive wine list had very few California reds (maybe 3 cabs) and it used to be one of the best in the city. Food was hit or miss. Menu was extremely limited without a light fish or a steak listed. Scallops were delicious, mushrooms had no seasoning , duck was too gamey for anyone to eat and deserts weren't memorable. Atmosphere was a little boring and not near as hip a vibe as it once was. Very pricey for the experience we had. We brought friends from out of town and was hoping for a beautiful dinner but still with a happening vibe. Sadly, this doesn't seem to be te case anymore. With so many new restaurant options in this city, I can't say we will ever return. It used to be a favorite!"

  • "This was among my favorite restaurants in Austin. I was really disappointed with the menu change. Only small plates, and not as good as I would have expected. I was hoping for the fantastic entrees that used to be on the menu. Even the bread wasn't good and it used to be great! Even worse, I actually went for a business dinner and set very high expectation on the place among my guests. What a disappointment!"

  • "Sunday brunch is one of the best in town. Everything was great except for one dish - chicken and waffles. the lemon/ricotta pancakes and the crab eggs benedict probably the best I have had."

  • "We were 5 of us. Valet parking was smooth. Service at the bar was extremely slow (took 15+ min to take our drink order, another 20+ min for our drink to be served). Service at the restaurant was faster. Friendly staff and was knowledgeable about their dishes. Each dish was super delicious and we all loved them! Only downside was each portion was very small, so this isn't a place to eat until you feel stuffed. Nice place for romantic dating or special occasion. They tend to be very busy on Fri and Sat night, so reservation is a must!!"

  • "I made the reservation at Paggi House because all of us girls hadn't been together for a while. The reservation was for the patio, however, since we were there for happy hour we had to move inside to the bar area in order to receive happy hour prices and choices. I was very disappointed by this, as the main reason I chose Paggi House was to sit on the lovely patio and enjoy the evening with the girls. Other than that, the service was fine."

  • "As a regular visitor to Paggi House, I was surprised management hired a young lady with a negative personality to act as hostess. Not only did she act as a downer, but she continued to act like it was a burden to resolve seating issues, when the restaurant was less than 50% full. Most of the wait staff are very upbeat and would make a much better initial impression. I hope the restaurant management looks at the personality and observes the reaction of diners, and hires upbeat people to great guests in the future. Austin has way too many fine dining venues to patronize one that makes you and your guests feel uncomfortable."

  • "The lamb was so heavily seasoned you couldn't taste it. The gnocchi was barely present on the plate--a few tiny pieces. We were overcharged for the bread that we shared (ordered one but they charged us for two); I didn't spot it until I got home. Most serious is a safety issue: there is a staircase from the parking lot. It is steep and long. They wrapped Christmas lights around the handrail so that one cannot easily hold the handrail while walking up or down the stairs. They have a far better impression of themselves than I do of them, and they push this attitude at you. It comes across in their food prep, their service and their safety. They can keep their attitude... and any future business of mine that they thought they might get."

  • "The food was great. The wine list had nice selections but was very overpriced generally. The service was subpar but we think the waiter was having a bad day and plan to return to find out. Very nice view from the outdoor deck. Good memories."

  • "We've been to the Paggi House on numerous occasions and have enjoyed our visits. On our most recent visit the menu had changed, and unfortunately, not for the better. The menu was surprisingly limited and while the food was prepared competently, the selections were quite limited. I was also surprised that they charge $ 4.00 for a couple of pieces of focaccia, a better (and complementary) version of which one can get at Mandola's. We probably won't go back until they change (and expand) the menu."

  • "The fire was dancing, exuding warmth as we were seated at our table on a chilly February evening. We were celebrating our 35th anniversary. The service was wonderful. I was looking forward to the meal. However, when we reviewed the menu, it had changed recently. I am not quite as enthused with the new menu. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the cast iron wild mushrooms and my duck breast was delicately delicious. The Mahi Mahi was a pleasure as well. At the time, we also tried the lamb belly. That was interesting. We enjoyed coffee with the decadent chocolate bonfire cake and espresso creme brulee."

  • "We had a nice quiet corner table for Valentine's Day. Great selection of Pinot Noir's - Bordeauxs, not so much... Food was very good and we had a very attentive but not overbearing server. Would like to see a little broader slection on the food menu, but what they had was good... Thaks for a pleaseant and stresss free evening..."

  • "Terrible. Our server didn't greet us until after 10 minutes. He did not know the menu or able to make any recommendations, he just repeated what the menu said. Speaking of the menu, it was limited at best. food portions were small, and sides were not offered. There was no drink service on the patio, music playing was classic rock (for a romatic dinner?). i have been here before and had a good experience, but they really messed up a Valentines Day dinner."

  • "We went for the brunch on Sunday and had a really terrible experience for the price. $30 per person brings a certain expectation with the dining experience. The expectation is that the food will be excellent and the wait staff will be on their toes. Well, both were way off. It took us over half an hour to get a drink order in from a very dejected looking waiter. The crazy part is that it wasn't busy inside or out, so it isn't like the table volume was the issue. They did seem short staffed which is unacceptable if you are going to charge this much. The flavor profiles of the food were poor. The brisket was too heavily smoked and had no seasoning or spice at all. The potatoes were bland and that is the sign of a weak chef."

  • "I came here with a friend for dinner on Valentine's since both of our husbands were out of town. The food was excellent, but the server was strangely unfriendly and it became a running joke to see if we could get him to crack a smile. It wasn't poor service, necessarily - everything came out and he checked on us. It was just that he wasn't very pleasant, didn't introduce himself and didn't really seem to want to be there at all, so maybe the guy was just having a bad day. Still, the place is gorgeous, the deck is surprisingly quiet for being right behind Lamar, and the food and drinks were good."

  • "Food is good but limited options, small portions and rather expensive. Service is very good. Check the menu before you go and make sure they have something you want because there is not a lot to choose from. Smoked foie gras is excellent."

  • "You cannot go wrong with Paggi House. In a town with many fine dining options, Paggi House is on my short list of places to take my girlfriend or clients. The menu never disappoints, the service is typically excellent and the atmosphere (whether dining inside or on the patio) consistently lends itself to a romantic evening or quiet business discussions."

  • "My husband and I chose this restaurant for the purpose of celebrating my birthday. We could not have been happier. The food was excellent, and we really enjoyed the smaller plates menu as this allowed us to try many different items on the menu. The ambiance was lovely, the drinks superb, the view of the city lovely, and the dessert was extraordinary. I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning soon!"

  • "First let me say that I love Paggai House, but I was not impressed. The meals were okay and the service was slow. Not what I've come to expect from this restaurant. I'm not ready to give up on it yet, but have had better meals and better service there."

  • "Great ambiance and great food-- service was great. I had the braised pork jowl, which was perfectly cooked and treated like a deconstructed banh mi sandwich. My girlfriend had the almond-crusted mahi mahi, which was very flavorful. I also had a well-prepared sazerac (which can be hard to come by in restaurant bars). Would definitely go back."
