Packing House is Randolph Street’s latest dining destination featuring modern American cuisine with a Mediterranean influence. Guests can enjoy exceptional bistro-styled dishes by Chef Amanda Barnes while sipping on craft cocktails, wine, and beer. Packing House offers extraordinary service under the guidance of General Manager Donald Whitcomb, who has worked with James Beard/5 Star chefs over his decade tenure in the industry.   • "The rooftop is fantastic here with a very unique view.... and that's about where the accolades end. They have some great charcuterie and cheeses, but were out of many of them. They were also out of the wine I selected. The service was slow (and they were practically empty!) and we repeatedly had to ask for more drinks, or whatever else one might need to enjoy the evening. I hope this is just due to the name/concept change, and I will give them another chance (and will amend my review if they've improved), but for now, I was extremely disappointed."

  • "Great service (not sure what the previous complaints were all about as I found the service to be wonderful), our waiter was extremely attentive, helped with the wine list as well as the cheese/meat lists-he even offered to choose the meat/cheeses out for us and did an amazing job. The food was wonderful-we had a group of 6 and every single one of us loved each dish that was prepared. I highly recommend the bone marrow, the meat/cheese boards, and the gnocchi. I typically never write reviews, but as this place is fairly new, I figured they deserved a fair and honest review unlike some of the previous reviews which I found to be completly off and ridiculous."

  • "Unbelievably rude staff. Made reservation with Open Table. Packing House did not have it. Informed us upon arrival that they were closing kitchen early – we had 10 minutes to make a selection. Staff seemed to be genuinely irritated that we showed up. Food was no better than what I could have made at home. Incompetent and rude staff, mediocre food. The building is an interesting design and it was a picture of the interior and the menu that originally attracted me – but after going there I can say the building deserves better food and better staff. Mystery how they stay in business with so many good places to choose on Randolph St."

  • "Had lamb shoulder, fish fry, watermelon salad, and fig truffle pizza and all were outstanding. Good portions for sharing plates (you could eat a second plate or pizza as an entree). Sat on the patio and it was beautiful-- perfect for double date night. BUT we had terrible service. Took 10+ min to get server, drafts were broken so we drank out of cans (they didn't give us glasses..), and we saw our server maybe 3 times. At the end, he apologized that "the service sucked" but he had a 10-top. Went to rooftop after for drinks & female servers were beyond rude. Ya it was crowded, but they were SHOVING people out of the way.. I want to like this place because I work nearby and the food/venue was awesome, but I didn't feel welcome at all."

  • "The food was good. I just ordered a simple burger and fried. The menu was a bit complicated. There are things from rabbit to octopus. I personally enjoyed the menu of the Market better. However, the ambience is still nice. It hasn't changed too much from the market."

  • "Had a very subpar mediocre experience here. I don' t know where this place got some sort of award as shown on it's Open Table page. I would recommend skipping this place, as there are quite a few other options nearby. Some highlights from our dinner experience for 5 people. *only one other table in the restaurant had anybody at it. Should have been a warning to us. The ceviche is way overpriced (over $25) for a very small bit of food. The service was a bit slow, which was odd since nobody was there. Ordered the meat tray. But repeated requests for bread were ignored until 4 pieces of toast arrived..for a table of 5. An entree was delivered...followed 8 minutes later by another entree...this repeated itself for 25 minutes. very odd"

  • "One of the more interesting small plates restaurants we've found. We went with a group of six on a Friday evening (7-9pm) and the restaurant was about 1/3 full. We wondered why. Because it was a few blocks too far West? Just a touch too casual and careless? Not quite right for business? Overly particular? (See other reviews. Note: They do not provide serving utensils … we had to ask for them. Do they assume you will share with your own forks?) It was a surprisingly good value and had plenty of interesting tastes for a table with varying palettes (and a few food allergies), but something was off and no one was excited to come back… which one of our party said was the true test of a first dine at a restaurant."

  • "This was our first time here, visiting from out of town for a concert. The food was excellent and the server was very friendly and informative. We enjoyed it immensely. I highly recommend the house-made pickles (all kinds of pickles: cucumbers, asparagus, celery, carrots...etc), fried rabbit, and lamb shoulder."

  • "Just opened April '14. Food very good. Nice variety and wide range of flavors, textures. Menu designed around sharing dishes, promoting excitement to try different items. Bar and bar tender are great. A few service / training issues remain with some young wait staff, but the manager is engaged and working hard. Prices were very reasonable. Packing House will build a strong following among the great restaurant choices on Randolph St."

  • "we chose this place because the menu has lots of choices. Began with the smashed fingerlings -YUM. the pickled veggies also quite good, and decent size. The Hamachi crudo is delicious and fresh. Burger was large, comes w/fries. Halibut entree was decent. Only open 2 months it looks like this place could be a winner. The bar area has lots of tvs and has a black curtain that separates from the main dining room. there is a rooftop which we didn't make it to, but wish I had."

  • "Went for dinner w a friend after seeing highlighted in a few magazines. Had one signature cocktail and 3 small shared plates. Wasn't wowed by anything. Was average food & beverage w price points that indicate it should be better than average. Small plates about $20 each and beverages around $12/$15. Security staff was the best. Hostesses unsure. Hoping they can works the kinks out. Good concept. Great space. "

  • "The manager is the restaurant's saving grace. Came here for Hawks Game 7, a server came to us 20 minutes after we sat down, food came 40 minutes later. And by food I mean appetizers, raw for the most part. Oh and our octopus? Never came, asked the manager about it 20 minutes later, turns out they've been out of it for a while. Strike 2 on our absentminded waitress. Seasonal pickles are doused in vinegar Eggplant is thinly sliced and lightly fried. Ahi tuna is good Braised Lamb (offered and comp'd by the manager) tender and comes with an indulgent potato purée, small amount of lamb. How in the world does this place think it's gonna survive if their waiters aren't taking orders and checking up on customers during a game?!?"

  • "The food was good, very small portions, which are fine to be shared with one or two others. The entire experience, however, was off. The staff wasn't familiar with the menu, making things tough as one in the party has serious food allergies. I know that's annoying to deal with, but if you consider yourself "upscale," you should be able to accomodate accordingly. We were back and forth between the front of the house and the kitchen, with the waitress as the middle man. It was uncomfortable, and we only ordered the few items we knew she could definitely eat safely. In my opinion, that responsibility should rest on the chef to come out to the table, or make sure your staff is informed in those situations. Unfortunately, will not be returning."

  • "The most important aspect of any restaurant is the food. The chef refuses to alter any menu item, no exceptions. We were excited to try this new restaurant. The atmosphere was nice. The server was friendly. However, as soon as we asked to have our fish prepared without the sauce, we were told that the chef refuses to alter her dishes. You can't even get a salt shaker on the table because you cannot choose to add salt to your food. Apparently, the chef knows the perfect balance of spices, sauces, etc. If your taste is slightly different...too bad. Unfortunately, we won't be going there again. We believe in some flexibility in our food menu."

  • "We were hoping to sit on the rooftop on Saturday but it doesn't open until May 15. Nevertheless, we sat on the street-level terrace on a lovely night. The drink menu here is good, with lots of reasonably priced beers on up to creative (but pricey) cocktails. Explore beyond the pizza and main plate menu. We had a salumi trio, a cheese trio, and the pick-5 crudo platter. We let our waiter Will pick everything, and he did a great job. The pork rillette was also delicious but I had to throw in the towel after over-indulging on the meat and cheese. The crudo (2 ceviches, escolar, tuna and another whitefish I can't recall) were amazingly prepared. For dessert we had yummy "soft serve gelato." Adventurous eaters will be rewarded here."

  • "Great food. Charcuterie board and cheeses were great. The truffle cheese was outstanding. Loves the Bibb salad. Have to try the Crab Spaghettini. Cool atmosphere with “art tv’s” on the walls. Modern trendy atmosphere. We went on a Monday so wasn’t super busy but I could picture other nights of the week being a really hopping scene there. Highly recommend this place. Best of all, the waitress was really cool and helpful. And don’t forget the awesome specialty drinks…..some great whiskey selections."

Misleading food fest options and service mistakes did not result in a comped drink or write off. If you want to spent 200 for two people for bar food you found your home. "

  • "The bar was packed with Blackhawks fans before the game. No way to get a glass of wine while we waited. Once seated, the service was good. I asked for the heat to be turned down (felt like an oven) and they quickly accommodated. The server explained that they are new and still perfecting the regulation of temperature. The food was a huge disappointment. Everything was extremely greasy or over flavored. We started with the tartar, you couldn't taste the beef. We moved onto the ceviche (Snapper), the citrus was overpowering. Next the marrow, again no taste other than fat & grease. We finished with gnocchi, which was wonderful until the pieces that were in the sauce. Again greasy (you could see grease it in the bottom of the dish)."

  • "Found this spot w/my Open Table app - wanted something close to the UC for a quick bite before the Blackhawks game. Turns out they just opened a week ago. Food was very good, fresh ingredients, unique, but simple preparations w/delicious results! Drinks were the reason I gave it 4 out if 5 stars for food - I don't like it when I get bad mint in my drink (ordered a Moscow Mule). If you don't have fresh mint, don't use bad stuff just to get the drink out - either get some fresh mint or tell the customer you can't make their drink! It seems like a small thing, but when everything else was so fresh, it was a big disappointment. Still, I'd go back & I'll tell people it's a good choice. "

However the ambiance and scenery made up for it. The appetizers offered were average. I'd dint have a chance to eat off the full menu in the main bar.   • "Came here for brunch and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Three of us shared the crabcakes, the steak, truffle fries and shrimp and grits. Portions were big enough and food very flavorful. It was a little quiet on a Sunday but it is def. more crowded in the summer for their great roof top bar/seating area. Will return!"

  • "Really enjoyed our experience here. My parents had been here before and loved the Caesar salad pizza that was on the menu. It's been removed from the menu but the server asked and they were still able to make it for us. That's great service. The truffle fries are also fantastic. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to eat."

  • "Market is always one of my favorite spots to go with friends. It has a bar feel but really good restaurant food. You can catch a game there during sports seasons with friends and also have a nice (not too expensive) dinner. The rooftop is also awesome. Overall, it has become one of my favorite spots in the city. Oh and the pizza is A-MAZING"

  • "Cool spot but the service is hit or miss. Could use a better menu and more experienced bar staff. When it first opened it was great but now...eh...popcorn shrimp had more cornels than shrimp...the bartender could not make a good margarita even after two failed attempts. Has lot of potential but could use some tips on providing customer service."

  • "Market is right by my home and I have been their a dozen times, I would say I have had one good experience there. They just can't seem to get their act together. Stay for one drink and leave! Head down Randolph to the better places!"
