  • "Damond was amazing at keeping track of my table of 10 ' s individual orders. Food was amazing as always!"

  • "My wife and I recently celebrated our one year anniversary by revisiting the the site of our first date, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food and drinks were great, the service was good but a little slow at times. i don't know if that is the fault of the server, or the the result of an overly crowded restaurant on the same day as the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade. Regardless, I would not hesitate to return to Oyamel for another meal or recommend it to others."

  • "Took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner and, we both loved it! Great food and amazing margaritas."

  • "food was mediocre at best. server forgot some of our dishes we ordered. there were 6 of us. menu was not easy to use. seem very chaotic."

  • "My main draw to Oyamel was the grasshopper tacos, aka chapulines. I was allured by the semi-exotic thought of eating bugs. So, I got the chapulines, but, I wasn't that impressed. The sauce in which they are cooked had a very peculiar flavor. Not bad, just something to which I am unaccustomed. I also ordered the chilorio de res and a taco with a chunk of beef brisket. Those were both very good, the chilorio being the better of the two. Oyamel has the best guac and salsa that I have ever tasted. The salsa has a very rich, smoky flavor and is divine. The guac is fan-damn-tastic. This is the freshest-tasting guacamole I've had, and you can choose your level of spiciness. I highly recommend dining here, but you'd better make a reservation."

  • "My group loved both the food and the special margaritas. Great service"

  • "Very rude waiter for lunch visit. Pretty much the opposite of service with a smile. All the employees seemed overworked and miserable. Food was just ok -- definitely overpriced. Salsa was fantastic, but it's delivered in tiny amounts and then you are charged extra. Not returning."

  • "My husband and I ordered 5 tapas plates at Oyamel. Two of his and one of mine appeared within 10-15 minutes, and his final dish came about 15-20 minutes after that, whereas mine, after I asked, came about 35-40 minutes after our first dishes had been cleared. It was a lamb dish, one of the most expensive on the menu (about $18.50), and while it was delicious, the big gap in the meal was trying, and the waiter didn't attempt to do anything to make up for the mistake. The classy thing to do would have been to offer me something else to eat for free while the (forgotten) lamb was being prepared or to take the lamb off of the bill. Neither of these occurred."

  • "Sometimes being different turns out to be a disaster. Food was bad I had stomach ache after eTing here. Meat was hard and tough to chew .Never coming back . Server was hand to understand and he seems to b in a hurry always even though the place was half filled."

  • "Remains one of, if not the, best restaurants in DC! Dinner with "Ron Cooper" is the best part of the day."

  • "We were very excited to eat here after great experiences at two other Jose Andres restaurants. This was a huge let down. They lack of flavor was the main topic of conversation of our party of four. The little mix up of orders was no big deal, but bland and Mexican should never share the same sentence! To be fair, Jaleo right next door was great!"

  • "Oyamel is one of my favorite DC restuarants. The service and good is always great."

  • "Menu was confusing. Too many options organized poorly. Choices were disappointing. Too many pork options, not enough chicken, beef or vegetarian. Food was disappointing and sometimes gross. Shrimp tapas was basically a few small slimy shrimp in tobasco sauce (gave me heartburn). Octopus did not seem fresh and had bland taste. And the prices were outrageous for the quantity/quality. The only thing that was good was the guacamole."

  • "We got seatted really fast but it took forever for us to recieve our drinks, and our waiter was very absent. We had to remind him about our food multiple times and every still took forever. The food is great though."

  • "There was a real problem with service. It was very crowded but they should be prepared for that. I will not go back for dinner. Lunch may be a better option."

  • "Make a reservation. The food is worth the effort. The decor is charming. Bring friends and share tapas. The variety and ingenuity will delight. Desserts are consistent with what you'll by then expect: authentic, innovative and a delight to the palate."

  • "We (4) stopped in after a show at the Wolly; starving so we immediately asked for drinks and chips/salsa/guac. When they finally arrived (read: service not great this night), everything was delicious. My girlfriend and I were over the moon from the frijoles refritos and the special ceviche. No one left a drop on the plate and I look forward to returning and working my way through the margarita list ."

  • "Oyamel wowed my out-of-town guests on a Friday night. The small plates were perfect for sharing, giving everyone a taste of several different things without being limited to a single choice. The chef's selection were the biggest hits, but we were happy with everything."

  • "The service at Oyamel was outstanding. They really know how to make you feel welcome. As for the food, we loved the eclectic menu...we didn't even read the whole thing before picking out what we wanted since everything we read sounded incredible, which means we'll be back!"

  • "Having been to other restaurants in this group, I had high hopes. But I (and all of us in my party of four) was disappointed. The food was bland and unexciting. The only high were the Brussels sprouts. We tried so many things...tacos, ceviche, meatballs and guacamole. All of them were fine...but bland. We were all just...disappointed."

  • "I always try something new at Oyamel, and am rarely disappointed. Part of what makes this restaurant so amazing is the creativity and diversity of flavor combinations. If you have an adventurous palate, this restaurant will always wow you. My took my coworker as a treat, and she loved everything! Some of my favorite items are the mango and guava agua fresca, the guacamole - extra spicy, ensalada de chayote, scallops, brussel sprouts and the papas al mole."

  • "the sound level in this restaurant is deafening. There appears to be nothing that softens the dining room nor the loudness of the adjacent bar area. I would not bring business clients here because it is too difficult to sustain a conversation in normal tones."

  • "I visit Oyamel often and even when it is noisy and crowded the experience Is worth the pain. This time our waitress clearly had other things On her mind and was totally negligent. We will be back, but I hope By then she has found a new career."

  • "I had been looking forward to trying Oyamel's because I read the reviews and was excited to try small Mexican plates. It was a Tuesday night and I was going to the Capital's game as were several other patrons. Chips and salsa came fairly quickly to the table and food was ordered, however, only half of it came. The first two items came quickly but after waiting for over 20 mins for the final item to arrive and brushing off several attempt to clear the table the frustration level was very high. To make matters worse, the waiter came to inquire about dessert! Needless to say he got an earful and all I wanted at that point was the check so I could leave and go to the game. Food was good but not worth the wait."

  • "A little on the pricey side, but dishes were tasty and margaritas great. Bar was hopping as we arrived during happy hour, but we were seated in the adjacent area, which was not terribly noisy. Cute decor and fun dining experience."

  • "Fun, energetic environment with very good and somewhat unusual Mexican food. Cranberry margarita (and the traditional ones) are very tasty. Guacamole made at your table to your request for "heat level." Lots of choices of meat, seafood, vegetarian. Plates are small, so you need to order several, but they can also be shared around the table. Worth a visit!"

  • "The staff are exceptional, very attentive, knowledgable and friendly. The food is excellent! I really love this spot. I first visited for happy hour with some co-workers about a week ago to celebrate an employee's new position. I had never been there before, but fell in love with just the happy hour cocktails and snacks. I brought my husband back the next week for dinner after raving about the food and cocktails to him. He loved it too. I'll definintely be returning."

  • "only complaints are lack of valet parking and noise level in the restaurant. Hard to have a conversation with more than one person because of how loud it was."

  • "My husband and i ordered 4 different small plates to share. The food was full of flavor, two weighed very heavily on lime juice so we should have chosen more wisely. Each plate was wisked away only to be immediately replaced by the next. We could have finished our dinner in 20 minutes if we had let them. We went on a Saturday early evening and it was hopping. If we are going to spend $100 on dinner for two (21/2 rounds of drinks). I would at least like to savor the food. With so many options to dine, probably a one and done experience. Food is good, but the experience was sub par."

  • "We were a group of 6 couples, 2 of which were visiting DC. We wanted to show them around and decided to done at Oyamel. Our experience was fantastic. Normally, I am very critical of things but I could not find anything to be negative about. The ambience is great. The food and service were awesome. We loved the margaritas, they struck the right balance. The menu is unlike any Mexican food we have ever had. Each dish was great. Loved the fresh guacamole, ceviche. We somehow got enough courage to even try the grasshopper tacos, they were amazing. I would definitely go there again and recommend it to others"

  • "One of the few Mexican restaurants that does not serve boring Americanized Mexican food delivered in huge portions. You will need to order 3 to 5 tapas size dishes, depending on your appetite, but get your taste buds ready; it will be a delight."

  • "Very noisy and crowded, although we booked an early table and were seated right away, in the midst of the commotion. The food was well done but very salty and I was a bit dismayed at the tiny portions, given the prices. The coffee and dessert were very good. My margarita was very good, as well, but rimmed with coarse salt which, given the salt content of the other selections, was a bit much for me. The noise level was pretty loud, but due to the happiness of the hour, and the age of the crowd, to be expected. Fine for partying after work, but not a quiet dinner. We were not really able to converse. After our wonderful experience at Zaytinaya, I'm afraid i was disappointed."

  • "Walking in the door, the host nicely agreed to find me a table early and accommodate that we would only be two not three for lunch. As quickly as my guest arrived smooth see rive began. food came in waves stating with the great salsa and table made Huac. as ever all was great and my out of town guest thanked me for picking Oyamel."

  • "The service was wonderful -- they keep the plates coming and keep checking that everything is ok. But you don't have to rush. Squash salad, black bean soup, shrimp, tacos -- everything was well prepared and uniquely flavored. It would take many visits to try everything we wanted. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Ate here with a group of 6. Overall, the service was slow. Had to wait a long time to order. Then food comes out sporadically. Menu is a bit overwhelming. You need to make notes of what you order (3-5 tapas style dishes per person) because the names are in spanish and not easily memorable. The servers didn't know who got what so we had to figure it out. I thought the prices were high for what the food was and the portion sizes. $4 for a mini taco? Afterwords my husband and I said we'd rather go to Chipotle for a fraction of the cost."

  • "Bustling restaurant with really nice menu and service. Dishes were inventive and really good."

  • "Our cocktails were outstanding: my friend's sea-foam margarita was, according to her, the best she had ever had, and I loved Oyamel's version of a mojito, which was served in a cocktail glass. The chips and salsa were fresh and delicious, and the guacamole was excellent and prepared at table side. The small plates that followed were delicious and creative; I particularly recommend the brussels sprouts. Two people in our party had hot chocolate for dessert and said it was very good. The decor is bright and whimsical - I loved the butterfly mobile. Late on a Saturday night, the place was energetic to the point of being quite loud, which I did not mind but is something to keep in mind if you are planning on carrying on much conversation."

  • "The food at Oyamel was very good, suprisingly the tacos were a dissapointment but the salsa and ceviches were outstanding. The main dissapointment was the porr service."
