Excellent, upscale Italian cuisine. Focused, smaller menu - all well executed. Build your own artisan charcuterie and frito misto outstanding apps followed by an excellent gnocci w/scallops in a goat cheese cream and a nicely done salmon. Bar and desserts are a great supporting cast. While the service is friendly and accommodating, it is not up to the level expected of such an excellent dining location. There is a difference between slow (European) pace and slow service and the staff here had a misstep or two - nothing a little training can't fix. Ovvivo is on the edge of very good and excellent - with a few tweaks, excellent is easily attainable.

This restaurant NEVER disappoints- Pizza is crisp and delicious, and I would say it is the best in the area. Last night I had the Chicken piccata, and my husband the lamb chops, and we shared the grilled Caesar salad- Everything was excellent!

  • What's up at Ovvio?
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

We were SO impressed the first time (grilled bronzino was outstanding). But now? Despite the attentive wait staff (Carlos was terrific), our entrees were disappointing. Crispy sucking pig was quite dry, and served on a bed of too-dry white beans. We took that concern to the chef; his response was that the dish was designed to be that way. Didn't do it any favors, as far as we were concerned. Grilled salmon was mediocre: we turn out tastier on the home grill (at much lower cost), accompanied by a sweeter-than-pie-filling dollop of sweet potato mash, and kale that was too tough to get through. We were there early with friends, so the decibel level was moderate. It increased as the evening progressed and the dining room filled up.

The food was good, but service was slow even though it was not very busy. One waiter seemed to be handling most of the restaurant and he was kind of spacey. They didn't know basic details about a regular special (price fixe) on their menu and were confused when we asked about it. Portions were adequate, but not great for the prices. While the food was good, the overall experience was disappointing as we had heard positive reviews from friends. We'll likely give it another try in the future.

This was our second trip to Ovvio Osteria and admittedly, I wasn't completely wowed after the first time, but it was convenient to grab dinner before the movie at Mosaic. I don't know what has changed, but the menu was much better -- there were at least five entrees on the menu that I wanted to try. The bread was outstanding, the specials sounded delicious as they were written on the chalk board and the wine selections were excellent as well with many different price points. The ambience feels a bit rustic, Restoration Hardware-ish, casual, but upscale. A great time the second time around and looking forward to a trip back soon!

Got seated just before a big influx of others, so service started pretty well for us, although it slowed down a bit later in the meal. We love the tastes of everything we have at Ovvio! The pear & prosecco martini was interesting as always & the balsamic & olive oil combo for the warm bread was a terrific starter. Shared 2 mains that were both excellent - capocollo, fresh mozarella & sundried tomato pizza plus grilled grouper with olive tapenade and polenta. Shared an espresso, chocolate and vanilla gelato dessert that was a great way to close out dinner. We love savoring each dish we have here & will be back! I do think a big part of the experience is that it's not your neighborhood chain restaurant & feels unique.

Surprised to find this relatively new, neighborhood restaurant situated in new Merrifield complex on the Dunn Loring side - watch the chef work his art from the bar. Outdoor dining on the sidewalk is available. Pasta specials are very good; fresh catch of the day served over polenta with green chopped-olive garnish was also tasty. Servers were attentive, but not overly so. All in all, a good find that got us in and out before our movie at the Angelika on the other side of Merrifield.

Went with work group and all enjoyed their meals. The lunch menu option of 2 for $12 is a nice way to serve lunch. My butternut squash soup was really tasty. The paparelle bolognese was also nicely done and though both were small servings, they were enough for me. A large man probably would not have enough food from that selection. Would go back again. Very modern, clean setting.

We had not visited Ovvio for five months but were eager to return. We were frankly disappointed; quality seemed to have declined. The luncheon portions were smaller but of more importance, the pastas were not up to Ovvio’s previous standards. Mine was served warm and seemed stale. My wife’s pasta was far too salty, something that has been the case with this dish previously. On a more positive note, the soup we ordered was superb and the desserts remain first-class. We’ll be back but this time hoping we won’t go away disappointed.

We started with the baked clams. Delicious but a bit overpriced. 5 clams for $15 seems expensive. The spinach salad and Caesar salad were very good and the wild salmon was also very good. The wine from the Slo Down vineyard was excellent and we will order that again. We will return as this restaurant is always very consistent and enjoyable.

I celebrated a friend here with a lovely fall lunch in the sun. It was a bit windy that day but the sun was so gorgeous we could not resist sitting outside. The staff was extremely accommodating to our wishes even though we were the only ones choosing to eat outside. We loved the option of the more petit portions and choices for the quick lunch even though we made it a very leisurely meal. Because we knew we had ordered the smaller portions we splurged and ordered the anti pasta. For the two of us we selected one meat and one cheese and it came beautifully garnished with honey, wholegrain mustard, dates, and a delicious caramelized onion jam. It was divine! The whole experience reminded my well traveled friend of being in Europe.

Great food. I had the papparadelle bolognese and it was delicious. They make their own pasta at the restaurant as well as the sauce. Our party ordered a variety of dishes which were also good and They had a nice selection of draft beers and wine. Parking can be problematic and I wish I knew about the complimentary valet parking before scouring the area for a space. While our waiter was very good, it seemed as if they were short staffed so service was slower than I expected. Although part of this's as our fault as we wanted to chat over drinks before ordering. The noise level was such that one side of the table could not hear what the other side was saying. We will return for the food is good.

Brunch includes $1 mimosas - oh yeah! Husband had filet & egg. He complemented the chef on cooking a perfect egg, and a filet cooked just right. Would have preferred some potatoes instead of arugula with the meal. Pizza with sausage, mascarpone, burrata and black truffle was tasty and rich. Couldn't really taste the truffle. Crust was crispy and chewy. Tasted even better with my husband's arugula! Restaurant has never been full on any prior visit. Great food, good prices and lunch/happy hour offers.

We had the same experience on both visits. The food is very good though the portions are a bit small. The decor is beautiful - sort of a contemporary bistro feel. But the service, while friendly, is a bit lacking. The servers don't know the menu, and service was erratic despite being only one of a handful of tables each time. I hesitate to criticize the staff because they were very nice, but they need a lot more training. I hate to think of what would happen if it was very busy.

Ovvio Osteria has an immense amount of potential. But it's falling just short right now. In a 90% empty restaurant, the hostesses didn't know where to sit us when we arrived on time for an early reservation. The wait staff doesn't know the menu like a wait staff should. When asking for a recommendation, the server shouldn't have to come read the menu over your shoulder. The signature cocktails were delicious, though slow to arrive. We always start with a charcuterie and cheese plate. When asking what our choices were, we were directed to two large chalk boards, neither were legible from our seats. The pasta and risotto dishes we ordered were rich, balanced and delicious. But slightly overpriced for the area/quantity. It can be great…soon.

Low/medium budget atmosphere with high end food prices. The food was good but our waiter was not. He left the menu with us the entire meal - they are huge and we had a tiny table. Happy hour menu is interesting. The daily special bruschetta was generous, but had a slightly unusual flavor that we couldn't identify but did't really care for. The salami platter presentation was lovely and interesting, but the amount of salami was a bit skimpy. We shared a mushroom pizza - again delicious but not overly large. Service was a bit spotty in the bar area. We would go there again because everything was tasty, but not if we are craving a hearty, filling meal.

Looking forward to trying a new place with friends, we were a bit put off by the industrial setting and loud noise (from not many people). The food was okay -- arancini were good, but the bruschetta was nothing but tomato with basil on undertoasted (i.e., limp) bread points. Service was good -- sommelier was quick to replace a bad bottle of wine once we pointed it out, but had recommended something quite off the mark to one of the party. All in all, seems much more a convenient place for after-work Merrifield folks than a place to actually seek out for dinner.

Our dinner was enjoyable. More like 3.5 stars. I had the salad with pears ( canned I think) - it was fine. I also had the short rib ravioli which was tasty but had several large lumps of gristle which detracted from the dish. My dinning companion had the caesar salad and pasta with ragu - enjoyed with no complaints. We both had the chocolate desert which was excellent. We enjoyed the dinner and would recommend the restaurant.
