Diner Reviews
  • "We had the same experience on both visits. The food is very good though the portions are a bit small. The decor is beautiful - sort of a contemporary bistro feel. But the service, while friendly, is a bit lacking. The servers don't know the menu, and service was erratic despite being only one of a handful of tables each time. I hesitate to criticize the staff because they were very nice, but they need a lot more training. I hate to think of what would happen if it was very busy."

  • "Beautiful night to dine outside. Service excellent. Love the special drinks on the menu, especially the pear martini with prosecco. Cheese & sausage plate was perfect - flavorful tastes that everyone really enjoyed. Pizzas here are awesome, including the Bianca & the veggie. Tagliatelle bolognese & ravioli really hit the spot & were perfect with the pizzas we all shared. Will be back again soon!"

  • "I always enjoy my meal at Ovvio. I love that the menu is simple but always changing based on the time of year. Good wine, good service, and a great atmosphere. I will continue to eat here."

  • "Ovvio Osteria has an immense amount of potential. But it's falling just short right now. In a 90% empty restaurant, the hostesses didn't know where to sit us when we arrived on time for an early reservation. The wait staff doesn't know the menu like a wait staff should. When asking for a recommendation, the server shouldn't have to come read the menu over your shoulder. The signature cocktails were delicious, though slow to arrive. We always start with a charcuterie and cheese plate. When asking what our choices were, we were directed to two large chalk boards, neither were legible from our seats. The pasta and risotto dishes we ordered were rich, balanced and delicious. But slightly overpriced for the area/quantity. It can be great…soon."

  • "Low/medium budget atmosphere with high end food prices. The food was good but our waiter was not. He left the menu with us the entire meal - they are huge and we had a tiny table. We were seated next to the waiters computer and it felt like the waiters were on top of us. The atmosphere is very much like the Chipolte food chain restaurants."

  • "Went here on a Friday evening for a girls night out. We sat outside and had wine and appetizers and then dessert! Out waiter was great...kept the drinks flowing and never tried to rush us out. We spent three hours there and enjoyed every min of it!!! The food was great!!!! Perfect night. Will definitely be going back."

  • "Happy hour menu is interesting. The daily special bruschetta was generous, but had a slightly unusual flavor that we couldn't identify but did't really care for. The salami platter presentation was lovely and interesting, but the amount of salami was a bit skimpy. We shared a mushroom pizza - again delicious but not overly large. Service was a bit spotty in the bar area. We would go there again because everything was tasty, but not if we are craving a hearty, filling meal."

  • "Looking forward to trying a new place with friends, we were a bit put off by the industrial setting and loud noise (from not many people). The food was okay -- arancini were good, but the bruschetta was nothing but tomato with basil on undertoasted (i.e., limp) bread points. Service was good -- sommelier was quick to replace a bad bottle of wine once we pointed it out, but had recommended something quite off the mark to one of the party. All in all, seems much more a convenient place for after-work Merrifield folks than a place to actually seek out for dinner."

  • "Convenient to the Dunn-Loring Metro stop, this neighborhood gem provides consistently good Italian food at a good price. The quick lunch special (M-Sat; appetizer and brick-oven pizza) for $12.00 is spectacular! The modern decor and open kitchen concept combine to create an elegant, but warm and welcoming, atmosphere. Grazie mille!"

  • "Our dinner was enjoyable. More like 3.5 stars. I had the salad with pears ( canned I think) - it was fine. I also had the short rib ravioli which was tasty but had several large lumps of gristle which detracted from the dish. My dinning companion had the caesar salad and pasta with ragu - enjoyed with no complaints. We both had the chocolate desert which was excellent. We enjoyed the dinner and would recommend the restaurant."

  • "We ordered few different entrees , bolognese was great although a bit on the salty side , seafood pasta was good, ravioli with braise beef was great, sausage and margherita pizza was also very good, the calamari and burata cheese appetizer were also very good. Our waiter seems very knowledgeable about the menu. The chef said hello and checked up on us ,he delivered the pizza himself to my little niece, and nice enough to accommodate my sis in laws special request, since she doesn't like spicy food. Overall it was a great experience except for the parking. They have valet parking, it was raining really hard when we got there and the valet guy, I guess did not want to get wet, he told us we can just park ourselves."

  • "Outstanding Italian. Range of menu excellent. Service outstanding. Waiter was exceptionally well schooled. He enhanced the entire evening with just the right advice."

  • "Went for brunch on a pretty quiet Sunday around noon. Not too crowded, would have been nicer with a few more people. The food was great, service attentive, $1 mimosas were a nice bonus. Recommend for a brunch that's not heavy on waffles and scrambled eggs. Look forward to going back for dinner."

  • "We got off to a bad start but the service improved as the restaurant got busier. They have great happy hour food specials every day. I am on the fence about whether we will try it again."

  • "We went to dinner for the first time at Ovvio Osteria on Friday, and though the food was ok, nothing special, we did not appreciate the proximity of the other guests dining around us. It wasn't all that crowded, yet we were placed about one foot apart from customers on either side. I understand the use of limited space in places, but the proximity to others just takes away from the overall experience. We do not plan to go back to the restaurant."

  • "I met a friend at Ovvio Osteria for lunch and it was wonderful. The food and service were notable and we were able to have a leisurely lunch without being rushed. The lunch special was very reasonable. I love the space and the Halstead District is fun."

  • "Seated right away. The wait staff were pleasant, responsive to requests, and available but non-intrusive. We all enjoyed our meals, especially the beef ravioli dish. Never got so noisy that we could not carry on a conversation."

  • "Great food in a great package. The only issue I had was that I noticed the restaurant was a little understaffed in my opinion, based on the fact it took a while to get our food. The bartender had to keep running back and forth to check on orders while also tending to the bar guests."

  • "I read that Ovvio Osteria had gluten free pasta, which for a Celiac is a dream come true. However, when we were giving our orders, we were informed that they did NOT have any gluten free pasta that night."

  • "this is rapidly becoming one of my favorite restaurants. The menu some offers dishes not found elsewhere. Home-made pastas are outstanding, salads are fresh and flavorful. Mushroom risotto mushroomy comfort food. The lunch special: 2 items for $12 is a great bargain. Service is very professional. Space is stylish, and surprisingly it's not too loud to hold a conversation."

  • "I went with a small group of friends. My second time, my friends first time. The restaurant is located in the newly hip area of Merrifield (never thought hip and Merrifield in the same sentence). This is a foodies place. Really great entrées with unusual twist (wild boar anyone?). Meatballs....yum! Smoked mussels...wow! Cannot complain about tbe food. The first time I want to Ovvio, the service was fantastic. This last time...scored a BIG zero. The waiter was terrible. ..slow...not knowledgeable. ...just all around bad experience. Even the staff that brought the food...would hastily place the food and run off. The restaurant wasn't even that busy to warrant such bad service. I will give it one more shot and hope for the best."

  • "What an enjoyable lunch at this charming establishment. I had the mussels (delicious) and the chicken sandwich. Such a great deal for food of this outstanding quality. Will definitely return!"

  • "The service was so poor, I have a hard time recommending this place. The food was good, but there were 6 of us having dinner, 5 of our dinners came out after a fairly long wait, the 6 dinner didn't come out for about another 15 minutes (I think the dinner should have been comped, but we barely got an apology), I believe the waiter said something like, "I said something to the chef.....sorry it was so late." Then we asked for dessert - 30 minutes after ordering dessert, it hadn't come - 2 different times I went in and said it was getting late - we had been there 2 1/2 hours and we wanted our check. It took 10 minutes after the second asking to get the check and then the dessert came out! Nothing had been comped - we spoke to the manager."

  • "Food was excellent. Noise level became unbearable since we had a very loud table near us. Service was pretty bad, since our server was either inexperienced or had too many table, probably both."

  • "My first time at Ovvio Osteria. Fantastic meal - had the short-rib ravioli. My friend had the pasta special and loved it. We both had glasses of their Pinot Gris -- some of the best we've had. We will be back!"

  • "The chef knows what he's doing - the food is EXCELLENT! He uses fresh ingredients in inovative ways. Try the daily special - you won't be disappointed."

  • " Very poor wait service. The waiter didn't know anything about the wines or beers, brought one of my guests the wrong eggplant dish which then took over 20 minutes to produce his meal. By the time his dinner arrived, we were long finished. Another waiter poured water into my other guests beer glass, then took it back only to come back with a glass half full of a new beer, which we were subsequently charged for. I was very much looking forward to my first meal at Ovvio. I had been there on several occasions for business mixers and liked the ambiance and the fresh made focus. The breads were delicious and dipping olive oil very fresh. My pasta dish was on the greasy side, however, with way too much butter and olive oil."

  • "The restaurant looks cute, the staff are super nice, however the brunch menu is very small. It is not kid friendly at all and food portions are pretty small compared to other Osterias I have visited. The food is good, nothing spectacular and not bad either. I wish them the best."

  • "As a neighbor, I am as excited to have Ovvio here as much as I was excited at the prospect of it to open last year. From the welcome at the door, to the talented bartenders, to the exceptional service, to the menu that pleases every time, this is my go-to restaurant. I am so happy to see the tables full and the same smiling faces to great me every time I dine. I couldn't be more pleased with Ovvio. 5 stars!"

  • "I have been here twice and I've loved everything I've had to eat or drink. The service has been wonderful. My only complaint on the last visit is that they were too anxious to take our plates away. Someone whisked away my cocktail, which was not finished, before I could stop him, and they kept trying to take our plates away when there was still food on them and we were still eating. It was almost comical. Note: Just because you stop eating to talk, doesn't mean you aren't going eat any more. This would not deter me from going back, and I don't expect it to be a problem again."

  • "We enjoyed the sweet sausage pizza which we shared- The thin crust was nicely done. The pasta with meat ragu was excellent. The arugula salad with shaved cheese and fennel was very good. They offered a very nice beer and wine selection, although the first two red wine- by -the- glass choices were not available. One of our favorite places to dine in this area."

  • "Over 50% of pasta & 3/4 of pizzas contain pork. Recommend some alternatives or offer some replacement items. Our salad, (no meat was listed on menu), contained pancetta (pork). The Fried Baby Artichokes appetizerwas interesting but ends were dry and would have benefitted by a dip or a drizzle of an interesting sauce. Our meals (soft shell crab and beef Rib ravioli) were served A la Carte (no reference to that on menu). There are some salads on menu but no other side dishes. Portions are rather small considering no sides. The crab was disappointing being heavily breaded supressing the crab flavor. Served over a corn puree that was essentially a thin sauce. Tiramisu was excellent but tiny. Not sharable esp. w/ the small portionw."

  • "We were looking forward to trying this restaurant. The best thing we are was the eggplant appetizer. Main course pasta with clams was extremely small. Pasta did taste homemade. Dessert dish of sorbetto was just about 1 bite for $8. Wine by the bottle was really overpriced as well. Overall disappointed in the food and the value. Will pass on coming back."

  • "We had been looking forward to going here after seeing some of the reviews. Wow! what a disappointment. Went there on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was very slow, maybe 6-7 other tables. We ordered drinks which came soon after. Then we ordered dinner, which was 3 salads and 3 pasta dishes. That's when the wait began. It took 25 minutes to bring 3 salads that at $11 were incredibly measly. Then it took another 30 min to bring our supposed entrée size pasta dishes. Again, at $19 we expected a lor more. In the meantime, our waiter was nowhere to be found. The manager did eventually come over and apologize and, to her credit, comped our salads and entrees. This restaurant has a lot to learn. Time will tell if they do."

  • "We went to Ovvio when it first opened and, having Celiac, I of course asked about gluten free options. At the time they said the chef was working on GF pizza and pasta. I've heard that before (yes, I'm looking at you, Matchbox), but Ovvio has delivered! Granted, the pasta and pizza crust are bought, not hand made like the rest of the menu. And all the pasta options are spaghetti based. But, my gluten free pizza was deliciously light and oven fired. Overall, very pleased with the effort and will now include them in heavy rotation. "
