Diner Reviews
  • "What an enjoyable lunch at this charming establishment. I had the mussels (delicious) and the chicken sandwich. Such a great deal for food of this outstanding quality. Will definitely return!"

  • "Overall good food but occasionally hit or miss. We've been here for lunch, brunch, happy hour and dinner (very local to us). We often sit at the bar because service can be rather slow otherwise. Didn't care for some dishes, but that was more a matter of taste than preparation, and some are no longer on the menu. Their lunch and happy hour specials are quite nice and encourage one to come in and try things. I tend to gravitate to their menu more than my husband, but we generally enjoy our meals. One thing about the bar - those stools look cool but are hell on the posterior after a while!"

  • "I heard the Chef Chris Watson was gone and the menu has lost it's great Italian flare. We were lucky to have dinner when he was there because it was excellent. The area is a lot out of the way for me but Chris was worth the drive. Not interested in going back since they dumbed down the menu."

  • "The service was so poor, I have a hard time recommending this place. The food was good, but there were 6 of us having dinner, 5 of our dinners came out after a fairly long wait, the 6 dinner didn't come out for about another 15 minutes (I think the dinner should have been comped, but we barely got an apology), I believe the waiter said something like, "I said something to the chef.....sorry it was so late." Then we asked for dessert - 30 minutes after ordering dessert, it hadn't come - 2 different times I went in and said it was getting late - we had been there 2 1/2 hours and we wanted our check. It took 10 minutes after the second asking to get the check and then the dessert came out! Nothing had been comped - we spoke to the manager."

  • "My first time at Ovvio Osteria. Fantastic meal - had the short-rib ravioli. My friend had the pasta special and loved it. We both had glasses of their Pinot Gris -- some of the best we've had. We will be back!"

  • "Food was excellent. Noise level became unbearable since we had a very loud table near us. Service was pretty bad, since our server was either inexperienced or had too many table, probably both."

  • "The chef knows what he's doing - the food is EXCELLENT! He uses fresh ingredients in inovative ways. Try the daily special - you won't be disappointed."

  • " Very poor wait service. The waiter didn't know anything about the wines or beers, brought one of my guests the wrong eggplant dish which then took over 20 minutes to produce his meal. By the time his dinner arrived, we were long finished. Another waiter poured water into my other guests beer glass, then took it back only to come back with a glass half full of a new beer, which we were subsequently charged for. I was very much looking forward to my first meal at Ovvio. I had been there on several occasions for business mixers and liked the ambiance and the fresh made focus. The breads were delicious and dipping olive oil very fresh. My pasta dish was on the greasy side, however, with way too much butter and olive oil."

  • "The restaurant looks cute, the staff are super nice, however the brunch menu is very small. It is not kid friendly at all and food portions are pretty small compared to other Osterias I have visited. The food is good, nothing spectacular and not bad either. I wish them the best."

  • "I have been here twice and I've loved everything I've had to eat or drink. The service has been wonderful. My only complaint on the last visit is that they were too anxious to take our plates away. Someone whisked away my cocktail, which was not finished, before I could stop him, and they kept trying to take our plates away when there was still food on them and we were still eating. It was almost comical. Note: Just because you stop eating to talk, doesn't mean you aren't going eat any more. This would not deter me from going back, and I don't expect it to be a problem again."

  • "As a neighbor, I am as excited to have Ovvio here as much as I was excited at the prospect of it to open last year. From the welcome at the door, to the talented bartenders, to the exceptional service, to the menu that pleases every time, this is my go-to restaurant. I am so happy to see the tables full and the same smiling faces to great me every time I dine. I couldn't be more pleased with Ovvio. 5 stars!"

  • "Food was fine. Although very few patrons, service was inattentive. Slow, no personal attention."

  • "The service was excellent and attentive. The suggestions for lunch were helpful, the food was delicious and the atmosphere unique. Great find hidden away."

  • "We enjoyed the sweet sausage pizza which we shared- The thin crust was nicely done. The pasta with meat ragu was excellent. The arugula salad with shaved cheese and fennel was very good. They offered a very nice beer and wine selection, although the first two red wine- by -the- glass choices were not available. One of our favorite places to dine in this area."

  • "Over 50% of pasta & 3/4 of pizzas contain pork. Recommend some alternatives or offer some replacement items. Our salad, (no meat was listed on menu), contained pancetta (pork). The Fried Baby Artichokes appetizerwas interesting but ends were dry and would have benefitted by a dip or a drizzle of an interesting sauce. Our meals (soft shell crab and beef Rib ravioli) were served A la Carte (no reference to that on menu). There are some salads on menu but no other side dishes. Portions are rather small considering no sides. The crab was disappointing being heavily breaded supressing the crab flavor. Served over a corn puree that was essentially a thin sauce. Tiramisu was excellent but tiny. Not sharable esp. w/ the small portionw."

  • "We were looking forward to trying this restaurant. The best thing we are was the eggplant appetizer. Main course pasta with clams was extremely small. Pasta did taste homemade. Dessert dish of sorbetto was just about 1 bite for $8. Wine by the bottle was really overpriced as well. Overall disappointed in the food and the value. Will pass on coming back."

  • "We had been looking forward to going here after seeing some of the reviews. Wow! what a disappointment. Went there on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was very slow, maybe 6-7 other tables. We ordered drinks which came soon after. Then we ordered dinner, which was 3 salads and 3 pasta dishes. That's when the wait began. It took 25 minutes to bring 3 salads that at $11 were incredibly measly. Then it took another 30 min to bring our supposed entrée size pasta dishes. Again, at $19 we expected a lor more. In the meantime, our waiter was nowhere to be found. The manager did eventually come over and apologize and, to her credit, comped our salads and entrees. This restaurant has a lot to learn. Time will tell if they do."

  • "Food was good, prices were about right for an "upper" scale restaurant. Drink prices seemed a little high for nothing more than a shot with a soda topper."

  • "We went to Ovvio when it first opened and, having Celiac, I of course asked about gluten free options. At the time they said the chef was working on GF pizza and pasta. I've heard that before (yes, I'm looking at you, Matchbox), but Ovvio has delivered! Granted, the pasta and pizza crust are bought, not hand made like the rest of the menu. And all the pasta options are spaghetti based. But, my gluten free pizza was deliciously light and oven fired. Overall, very pleased with the effort and will now include them in heavy rotation. "

  • "Ovvio is great for lunch. It has a "quick lunch" which is part of the main menu. You can get 2 items off the list for a very reasonable price which was around $17. I had mussels and good size pizza for this price. We decided to have dessert and mine was well worth the price. I asked for cannoli and received 4 small ones of different flavors. My friend and I had not seen each other for some time so we visited well past the lunch time. They allowed us to visit uninterrupted. Then at 4:30, we realized that they were setting up for dinner. We never felt rushed. It was a lovely afternoon."

  • "We wanted to try something new in Mosaic, but it turns out this restaurant is actually on the other side of Lee Highway. Valet parking worked well. The staff is exceptional, front desk to wait staff. The food was fine, just fine. My husband had pizza and I had seafood. I will probably visit again because I liked the vibe and I can always hope the food will improve. My above note that I would recommend would be Yes, but don't have high expectations. "

  • "Love this restaurant! Short, creative menu of modern Italian specialties, most made in house. The short rib ravioli is outstanding: tender, home-made pasta with meaty filling and flavorful mushroom sauce. nice wine selection, including many choices by the glass. Service is excellent--knowledgeable and friendly but not overbearing. Dining room with open kitchen is a wide-open loft-like space, yet still quiet enough for conversation. "

  • "Tucked into a mostly condo/apt area the four of us were blown away by this fantastic spot.. From the salads, the fresh fish and the pizza everyone kept raving about the quality of the food. Our waiter was perfectly charming and the meal started off with fresh italian bread and a fantastic dipping sauce. The salads were so fresh. Two branzino were better than Blacksalt in DC. But I think the risotto with cauliflower and pork belly stole the show. WE had to leave for a movie in Angelicka so we could not try coffee and sweets. But we will be back."

  • "My friend and I scoped out the restaurant for our monthly dinner group after reading a review in the Northern Virginia magazine. We are definitely coming back with our dinner group in August most likely. It is just the kind of place we seek. Great food. Unique and delicious with a menu that is reasonably priced."

  • "2nd visit for lunch. Got 2 for $12 lunch special, that provides some great combos to choose from for a really nice lunch. I had Caesar salad and margherita pizza. Salad comes as uncut romaine lettuce with dressing and parmesan crisps. Tasty. Margherita pizza had buffalo mozzarella, great crust, but could use more fresh basil instead of piece in the center. If there was more underneath the cheese, I couldn't detect it. Lunch companion ordered wine, but 2 of the reds by the glass were not available. Need to update menu or offer replacements. Had to choose a less bold red wine than preferred. Ovvio's wine selection is diverse and includes some uncommon Italian wines. Great for trying new wines. Looking forward to trying brunch."

  • "Missed my opportunity to book a Mother's Day buffet brunch at our favorite Mom's day spot that our kids also enjoy. Somehow came across Ovvio Osteria on Open Table. Brunch (not buffet) sounded great. Reviews looked good. Kids were a little sad that we were not going to our old place. Seconds after the kids bit into the amazing Nutella Buns they said "can we come here again?" Food was outstanding for brunch. Atmosphere was great. Open but not loud. Service was efficient and friendly. We all ate every last bit of our orders. If you have not been to OO, go! You won't be disappointed."

  • "It had been a couple of months since we had last come by Ovvio for a Sunday lunch. In the meanwhile, they had changed their brunch menu to feature exclusively breakfast type of dishes. When I indicated that I had hoped for a more lunch-like menu, my waiter said no problem, promptly brought out the old brunch menu, indicated a couple of items that were no longer available, and said that they would be happy to prepare anything else on it for my wife and I! After a delicious bowl of mussels in a pancetta and parsley sauce (she) and a wild mushroom pizza (me), topped off by bomboloni and espresso, we left quite happy and looking forward to our next visit."

  • "Found a restaurant I hadn't noticed before, and it's in the Mosaic District. The food was delicious, the wait staff was attentive, and they had a bonus feature, too. I was with a person who needs a gluten-free diet, and she was thrilled to be able to have many choices. We enjoyed our meal!"

  • "Ovvio is a good restaurant that has flashes of greatness. We've been there a number of times - this time with more angst than last. From their parking lot being full and Valet not being available, their bread still baking after our great pate appetizer was served, the missing wine that took 10 minutes to find was not available, but was replaced at same cost with a higher priced one. Having to ask for cheese to be brought after the great pasta had been served - it was a one step forward, one step back evening. "

  • "Ovvio is a nice restaurant, good wine list and menu selections. I was disappointed by the lack of vegetarian options and when pushed the server did speak to the chef who accommodated the request. "

  • "The service was so poor, that I just can't give them more than a 3. But I have not experienced such poor service in this level restaurant in a very long time. From taking drink orders (poured water and neglected to ask us if we wanted to order drinks) to absentminded serving (waiter suggested he could select meats for our antipasto but when served, neglected to explain what was on the platter until we called him back over) to bringing the wine without a corkscrew & forgetting to come back right away until we flagged down the waiter. The food and wine were excellent, but at these prices we had much higher expectations from the service. "

  • "Monday mid-afternoons are quiet for lunch, so Trace could take care of us and chat, telling us about Sunday brunch, happy hours, the weekly wine tasting, the unique Italian wine selections, and whet our appetite to come back and enjoy "OO" even more. 2 for $12 lunch selection is great. My menu had a previous week's menu, but no problem to still get an arugula salad. Endings to some words often changed- panino instead of panini -but results are the same. My caprese panino was yummy and olive bread great to dip in the wonderful olive oil and balasamic. Trace got me a sample of Greco di Tufo wine from Campania before committing to a full glass. When I did it was wonderful. Look forward to going back for a wine tasting and brunch."

  • "Great Italian grub in a cool atmosphere, really enjoy this restaurant. Have been here for dinner on numerous occasions and they have nailed it every time. It is also worth mentioning that Ovvio also has one of the best gluten free menus I've ever seen. This place is worth checking out."
