Chef Greg LaPrad brings a polished dining experience to the lush high-desert grasslands of Sonoita, poising this region as the Southwest's prized up-and-coming culinary destination. Named after cowboy slang for bacon, the term "Overland Trout" was first seen in a newspaper published in 1887. Here, we celebrate the culinary heritage of Arizona’s borderlands with our terrain that boasts a rare agricultural bounty of regional indigenous ingredients alongside rich soil that feeds our neighboring vineyards.   • "My boyfriend & I had heard great things about this restaurant & were looking forward to dining there. We were seated at a table for two at the window. Little did we know that the view would turn out to be the best part of our dining experience. It took our waiter 10 min. to take our drink order. Since we waited so long to order a drink, we decided to order dinner at the same time. Drinks arrived 5 min. later & it was another 40 min. before 2 meager slices of bread (although crusty, hot & delicious) arrived with our entrees. My mahi mahi was overcooked, dry & the size of my palm - for $29! My boyfriend's chili relleno was sitting in a pool of oil. We looked out the window and saw the chef-owner just arriving...so whose food were we eating???"

  • "We made a reservation in advance and subsequently learned that our status as a sustaining member of KJZZ in Phoenix entitled us to a $16 starter dish. We enjoyed a cheese plate with cheeses from around the world with relished with olives and fresh cruets. The mahi-mahi was awesome accompanied with a tomato bisque, and the Chile Relleno was the freshest we have ever tasted. We did have friends who came in as a large group without a reservation and they had to wait some time to be served. We couldn't have been happier."

  • "Unfortunately we had a very poor experience at a very cute place. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and great ambiance. It was unfortunate the service and food didn't match. The menu looked very appetizing with 4 special entrees and 3 Sonoran items. The chicken in all of the dishes was not hot and over cooked, the enchiladas were just a corn meal cake with no flavor and very little flavor from the items on top."

  • "three of us went for lunch and were disappointed as we drove down from Tucson specifically to dine at Overland Trout. there was nothing particularly interesting or fresh tasting in the sandwiches we had (grilled cheese, and the hot dog entree). the pickled veggies were unexciting and needed color. fries were quite good and tomato soup was real tasty. i've heard the dinners are wonderful."

  • "I made a reservation for a group of eight for 6 p.m. We were seated quickly and drink order were taken shortly after that. It took a bit to get the drinks served. The restaurant was about 1/2 filled so not overly busy. Appetizers came on time. It took about 45 minutes after placing our entree orders to get served. Two plates were cold, cold, cold when served. Very disappointed in the portions on the veal plate! For the prices that are being charged for dinner items, I was very disappointed in the service and portions."

  • "My friends and i found overland trout quite by accident when we went to elgin to visit wineries. The menu was fabulous and it is a true gourmet find. Everyone from the hostess to the wait staff was so friendly and helpful. I orderedthe ceasar salad and shredded chicken. The salad was crisp and fresh and absolutely delicious. I had a cup of soup and that was wonderful too. I will make this a regular stop when i come down from tucson with friends to go to the wineries. The ohotographs on walls are very artistic and interesting and the views of the landscape and mountains out the window charming."

  • "Not a bad first experience. We had a prefixed 4 course meal. The portions did appear small, but we found them to be filling. The sweet potato soup had aromatic Indian flavors that paired awkwardly with wine that was selected as part of the pairing menu. The main course of prawn and tenderloin was delivered on a single plate to be shared. Here we were given two prawns and two slices of meat (1 of each for both of us.) Although cooked well, it did not feel special and at $49.00 per person, not a value. We will try them again during the week for happy hour to get a better feel of the menu and value. A coworker raved about the Sunday brunch so we will try that too. If you are local or coming in from out of town try them!"

  • "I've been there 3 times- the food was wonderful. Chel LaPrad is a genius! So is his bartender! Service was outstanding the 1st and 3rd time, but the 2nd time it was not up to par with the menu pricing. I expect GREAT service if I am spending $200+ on dinner for 2. The waitress was a bit frazzled on our 2nd visit but it was a busy night...she was the same one at brunch the 1st time I visited, when it was not as busy. Go during an off hour for best service. The food and drinks will always be delicious! Highly recommend."

  • "This restaurant exceeded our expectations. We were visiting Sonoita for a second time and previously had had only fair dining experiences. This new restaurant was a great find. I had read an article that the chef had left the Phoenix area to open a restaurant in Sonoita. Our party of four was most pleased with all aspects of the evening."

  • "This is an interesting place. Wine list is "different" and very overpriced. They encourage you to try a certain wine, but when you order it... They're out... We are at 6:30. They were already out of some of their specials??? I guess people in Sonoita start having dinner at 3? Service was very polite, but very slow. Don't know this place will make it at these prices... $250 for two people with 2 glasses of wine and one beer. No dessert. One shared appetizer, one side salad and two entrees. Food tasted good."

  • "The bartender for Happy Hour was great! Eager to share knowledge and tastes of locally produced drinks and the appetizer we shared was very good--fresh date with cheese and excellent local bacon. Dinner was so so. The men had veal which they thought was good. We ladies had a chicken dish over cornmeal but did not taste the cheese and poblano described on the menu. The cream brûlée was average, couldn't really taste the Tres Leche. We saw some beautifully plated dishes ."

We waited 35 minutes to order after being seated for Sunday Brunch. And... we were the first group (4) in the place. The menu looks very inviting, but the food was just average - nothing to brag about. A lackluster experience for sure. Sorry."

  • "Service was very good but due to lack of supplies sometimes slow. appetizer was great. French fries were very cold and over spiced plates cold also, don't advertise a drink that you do not have. buffalo burgers great ,pork sandwich strange, wine list very limited NO Chardonnay by the glass???? Limited reds? and you are in the middle of AZ wines that people would like to taste. Prices are high and not justified, better food then keep them up to stay alive This could be a great restaurant but at this point will not last one year. Too bad because the service was so good that you knew everyone was trying. WE will go back but only once if things don't change.."

  • "This was our fourth or fifth visit since the restaurant opened. The food has always been great and tonight was not exception. The veal scallopini melted in my mouth and the sauce was superb, the potato truffle soup was great, and the chocolate-peanut butter mouse was to die for. Overland Trout continues to be gem in the grasslands. It is well worth a trip from Tucson or Sierra Vista."

  • "I was able to make reservations and even got a call back to verify, which was nice. We didnt get the appetiser we ordered untill we had been there for 45min! We were brought 2 pieces of bread b4 that but when I asked about the soup I was told there was a computer glitch! The wait spoiled the tone for the evening. We kept seeing all the other guests served, while we waited. I feel an executive decision should have been made to overcome this challenge by writing the order on a piece of paper and keep the food comming. HOW DID WE OPERATE B4 COMPUTERS? A new restaurant needs to be as concerned about customer service as the menu & other items!"

  • "What a wonderful way to spend a day. We visited 2 wineries, and then sat down to a spectacular dinner. Both dishes were prepared to perfection, and the banana creme brûlée was spectacular. The room was a little cold, but very tasteful furnished with spectacular western art photography and beautiful hand-carved rosewood chairs. The waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, honest, and professional, and the owner came to our table to make sure that everything was to our satisfaction -- it was. The prices were fair. in Scottsdale, a dinner this good would cost twice as much. It was a wonderful experience, and well worth the 50-minute drive from Tucson. We'll be back."

  • "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Overland Trout. The atmosphere and the food were outstanding and the wait staff were accommodating and professional. We had the Sonoran Oysters and Artisan Cheese Board to start...very good. I had the flounder with winter squash mash and roasted cauliflower and enjoyed it much. The flounder was cooked perfectly. My husband had the Veal Scallopine and said it was delicious. For dessert I had Creme Brulee and he had the chocolate and peanut butter mousee. The Creme Brule was perfect. My husband had one cocktail and said it was quite strong; I had wine. Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening and worth the drive."

  • "My family and I enjoyed brunch at Overland Trout this past Sunday. Long-time area residents, we have been patiently awaiting another "Sonoita Seasons" fine dining experience such as we used to enjoy at Karen's many years ago. Finally, our hopes have been answered! The food was delicious and unique, and it was clear that the chef's intent to use local resources for food and wine were well met. The ambience is delightful, and the dining room's views are outstanding. Coupled with all the other attractions in this area, Overland Trout should be a draw for visitors from far away as much as for the locals. The wait-staff may not be as polished yet as in urban areas, but their hearts are in the right place and that's good enough for now!"

  • "Even though we had read mixed reviews we decided to give Overland Trout a try. We were disappointed. My husband's beef loin was tough, even though the waiter had said he had tried it and it "melted in his mouth". The ceviche (sp?) was good but the green salad had too much salt on it (there shouldn't really be any salt on a green salad) as did the potatoes. The wine pours seemed stingy. My husbands second glass was a better pour than the first. all in all the meal was not a good value. Our tab was $96. The chef really needs to lighten up on the salt."

  • "It's so sad to say, but these guys really don't know what it takes to run a good restaurant. Coming from Phoenix and Quiessence, where I have been many times, I expected a lot more. The food was wildly inconsistent (two of us ordered the same fish dish -- one was great, the other was awful). Some dishes were really good, others were inedible. We received a 'free' dessert for a birthday and it was literally awful. When we told the waiter about it, he said, "oh, I heard something about a bad batch." Um, really? Many of the wines we ordered (the local wines) were out of stock. We asked to speak to the manager but he's the owner and also the chef, and he refused to come out of the kitchen. Just a poor experience. It's too bad."

  • "This is a fantastic concept, and I can't wait until it gets to where it needs to be. Unfortunately, it's not there yet. There were only two other tables during Sunday brunch, yet service was spotty at best. Our server knew little about the menu and had tasted only a few of the dishes, so she was of little help. She also disappeared for a long time, leaving us to ask other servers for help. And help was needed. First, our soup was only lukewarm and very salty ($9), but the large shrimp garnish was delicious. The pork entree was quite fatty ($18), and the bread products were crumbly and dry. The Arizona wines cost at least twice as retail, which didn't make us want to order it when we could drive a mile and get it for half the cost."

  • "We came for brunch with a group of friends from out of town. The view of the Sonoita hills from the window took our breath away. Hot drinks and cocktails were good, and the brunch choices intrigued us. Everything really was great but something was missing with the meals...fruit, garnish, toast, something. My Divorced Eggs were scrumptious but needed an accompaniment, perhaps a side of warm tortillas to sop up the egg yolks and salsa that pooled on the bottom of my plate. There was not much food on any of our plates for the price we paid for them. We come down from Tucson frequently and hope to return for lunch or dinner. We would like to see the place succeed as Sonoita needs a nice place to dine."

  • "Overall, this restaurant needs work. With our reservation, we were seated quickly. Asked for water without ice when we arrived, and got water with ice -- no big deal. Was provided a wine list ; our server did not the wines, and no one came o our table who did. We ordered the Snapper and Steak. The snapper was grizzly and parts not edible. My rib-eye steak was extremely dry -- I was told it was because it was corn fed -- for $28, you would expect better. So overall, for the price of about $140 (with wine) for two; we were extremely disappointed. I hope they can get their act together. The next day we heard from other patrons (without solicitation) of their dissatisfaction as well. So unfortunately, we were not alone in our review."

  • "This new restaurant features interesting twists and tastes on simple food, well prepared. Lots of pork, oysters in various iterations, and, of course, trout. Not much here for vegetarians, but it is a welcome addition to the southern AZ wine country scene. The chef seems to be getting his sea legs with service and a changing menu, but the "bones" of a fine dining experience are here."

  • "We had an excellent lunch at this recently opened Southern Arizona gem. My meal started with a fine glass of grape-infused Belgium-style beer, which I believe is only served at Overland Trout. For an appetizer my wife and I shared a platter of three different, delicious trout preparations. For my main I chose soup and salad. The soup was a creamy fish/scallop concoction that really hit the spot. The salad was made from the freshest tomatoes with an indescribably good balsamic-like dressing. For dessert we split the chocolate cake, which was brownie-like in its texture and taste--another winner. We will definitely return when we are in the area again; we are eager to try dinner.!"
