Diner Reviews
  • "great place to dine before show at filene center. the open setting in the beautiful VA countryside can't be beat."

  • "If you don't want to bring your own picnic, Ovations is a good alternative. The fried chicken and she-crab soup were fantastic. The boiled spiced shrimp was great appetizer. For the firs time our service was not good. They try to balance the load among servers at this buffet setting, but our guy was behind all night- with the water, the drink order, refills, and plate clearing. This late in the season he should have it down."

  • "We were seated immediately, nice table next to the rail overlooking the lawn and woods. Service was good at first, but took a long time for servicer to return. Food selection was very good, and fresh..nice selection of salads and entrees. However, for what we had, it was not a $32 meal. You're paying for the location and convenience to the performance."

  • "Lovely leisurely & delicious meal overlooking field & woodland. Our reservation was for 6pm. prior to a 8pm. concert performance so we had plenty of time & didn't feel rushed. Recommend asking for a table at the edge of the terrace. Good variety of nicely presented & tasty buffet dishes. We were lucky to have a pleasantly cool & sunny evening in mid August."

  • "Dishes were dirty - wine glasses came with lipstick. Food was good but cleanliness was not"

  • "Food was not great. The worst fried chicken I have ever had. It was conveneient and since we drove for 5 hours through all of the traffic I was thankful that I dd not need to goanywhere else to get dinner"

  • "We have gone to Wolf Trap for years and eaten at Ovations because it is convenient, but never for the food. Last year, the food was better than average and we were really excited to eat there again. This year I found that they had gone back to less than average. It's not that the food is bad, the roast beef, ham and salmon were good. The vegetables and salad were fresh and tasty, but for $32 a person I expect more. The rolls were out of a package and almost stale, the desserts were just ok, and the service was mediocre at best. I overheard someone say, "It's like eating at the Golden Corral, but 3 times more expensive and with a better view. I had to agree."

  • "If you are not going to picnic and you are going to Wolf Trap then you want to go, for dinner, to Ovations. It is all buffet with a very wide assortment to fit all tastes and desires. The chef will work with you if you are plagued with allergies. Food is fresh and loaded with flavor. Spent dishes are immediately replaced so that the serving line is always looking fresh. One sits in an open air fancy tent with a view of the lawns and picnicers. Go and enjoy!"

  • "It's convenient and easy to dine at Ovations when seeing a show at Wolf Trap. The food is not especially outstanding, but the buffet only is served hot and well."
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "All wait staff were very upbeat, friendly, and accomodating. The atmosphere was relaxed and unhurried but efficient. It rounded out a truely beautiful evening."

  • "This is an open air buffet at Wolf Trap. Convenient if attending an event but not inexpensive for what you get. Huge place, harried servers, multiple buffet lines with acceptable buffet food. Fried chicken, sliced ham, tough roast beef, vegetables, fairly good salad bar including steamed shrimp in the shell if you want to get messy and nice deserts. If the weather is good or even reasonable, come early, bring your cooler of food and use the picnic area."

  • "Got convinced to try Ovations before the Boney James concert, so made the reservation and figured for $33 a piece, the food must be good. Well.....the buffet reminded me a local restaurant who is trying out the whole buffet thing...and not sure how to get it right. Most of the food was not hot and many of the dishes were either not available at the time or just small crumbs of food left. Service was slow...almost overwhelming for the majority of high school/college aged servers.....don't expect refills on soft drinks in a timely manner....the only saving grace...the concert was awesome! Will eat before arriving or bringing a picnic basket!"

  • "Good dining opportunity when attending a Wolf Trap performance after dinner"

  • "Hassle free dining on site at Wolftrap. The food was comparable to a Vegas buffet, not over the top but well worth the price & comfort level. Hang out at your table until the seating bell rings. Ovations is now a must experience prior to any seated shows at Wolftrap."

  • "The restaurant is great. Lots if good food, and you're right next to the venue. Always a good time at Wolf Trap!"

  • "The food was cold and not that great, especially for the cost. The service was great and it's convenient. That's the best I can say."

  • "We are frequent Wolf Trap visitors but for the past couple seasons we'd skipped Ovations because it really wasn't special. Last Friday night we decided to give it another try. We were honestly blown away. The food was so much better than ever before. The prime rib was tender and perfectly seasoned. The turkey was moist and tasty. Rare outcome for turkey. The catfish and remoulade sauce turned out to be the dish I had to have seconds of. I must admit I didn't try much from the salad table. I just didn't have room. I tried the brownie and pecan pie on the dessert bar and was very happy with both. We will definitely include Ovations in our next Wolf Trap outing."

  • "While it is convenient and has a nice ambience, the food on the buffet is, overall, pretty bad - especially for $30+ per person. There were a few items that were flavorful and prepared properly but so many offerings were bland, dry, cold and/or improperly made. Even the fresh fruit and vegetables were tasteless - in the middle of summer! We have eaten there more than a dozen times in recent years and have been "OK" with it. This year is the first (I think) where the buffet is the only option. We used to order a la carte to find something that was acceptable. We have tried the buffet twice this year - both times the overpriced meals were no better than going to a school cafeteria. We will be picnicking on future visits."

  • "The food is good (especially the desserts) and it is a convenient place to eat prior to the show."

  • "The food is medium to low-end buffet food. The service was very pleasant and I would describe the desserts as industrial quality. This does not mean it was bad just that one should not have high expectations for the food. The setting is very nice and the location is perfect for those attending a concert. Convenience is a bonus."

  • "Sadly, Ovations leaves much wanting ~ needs better food and better service. We attend Wolf Trap at least 3 times a month in the summer returning 5 years in a row loving the variety of shows. We have tried to give Ovations a chance eating there 5-6 times a season. We have reached our limit this season ~ had only 54 diners last week. Maybe folks have decided like we ~ just cannot come to grips with a $32 meal plus the cost of drinks for cafeteria like food with hohum service. Will Ovations consider bring back salads entrees? We have suggested this each year. Last week, my husband, "Enough!" We will picnic the rest of the season. So sad."

  • "We arrived early because we like hot food but that did not matter since the main courses we tepid at best. The choices for the buffet were expansive. They had a wide range of pastas, soups and salads for starters that were very good. But the main courses of NY Strip Steak, potatoes and veggies were warm. There were a variety of desserts that ranges from Key Lime Pie to Brownies that offered a pleasant end to the meal. If you like buffets for the variety and quantity of food than is would be a good choice. Overall the food is good but for the price you would expect more flavor and for the food to be hot. Especially since we were one of the first people there."

  • "I usually don't pay to much attention to bad reviews, but the reviewers got it right on Ovations. Starting with the table, it was dirty as well as the glasses on the table. The cold food was not cold and the hot food ran out of the popular items. They ran out of plates and silverware. It was so mediocre that it is a shame that some notable chef's have associated their name with the menu items. I would compare the food to a salad bar at the Giant grocery store. Even the desserts were unappetizing. Over priced and poor food quality for such a lovely location. Really to bad. To top it off the restrooms close to the restaurant were out of hand soap, really disgusting, how were the food handlers washing up?"

  • "Beautiful outdoor setting and a nice way to relax before a concert at Wolf Trap. Food was average, not great but not bad."

  • "Service and food selection much better than last visit."

  • "We had been to this restaurant six days earlier and had a nice time. Our waiter was very nice and attentive so the low overall score does not reflect the service we received from him. The restaurant ran out of wine. This wasn't late in the serving hours and we found this unbelievable. When we ordered a second glass of wine, we were told it wasn't available. We tried the Shiraz first; followed by the Malbec - neither was available. The waiter brought a substitute red, then when we got the bill, we were charged extra for this substitute. We asked about it and he went to the manager, who reduced our bill by $3 (the additional charge)."

  • "Meat was very tough and unable to cut with knife provided. Selection of entrees was poor. My adult daughter who was my guest was disappointed that there were no vegetarian selections. She ended up eating a salad, mashed potatoes and rice. At that price of $32.00, it was a shame that there was not a better selection for her. Not even a pasta dish. Also, the food was not at a very warm temperature."

  • "We had a wonderful birthday celebration in honor of my husband's birthday. The food was excellent."

  • "My wife and I eat at Ovations about once a summer for a Wolf Trap performance. Two years ago, there was a menu overhaul and this buffet-oriented dining experience was pretty good, all things considered. This visit was disappointing. The menu has been changed again (and a la carte options eliminated). The hot food was only fair -- boring steamtable fare. Although pork loin and beef round were individually carved, neither was very good. Deserts used to be a highlight. Not any more, although they couldn't do much to the ice cream and berries, which were fine."

  • "The chairs were uncomfortable to lean back in. The tables are on pedestals with X bottoms on the floor. It was impossible to move the chair close under the table because it ran into the pedestal. One could not lean back comfortably in the chairs regardless of the pedestal."

  • "Ovations is a must (at least once a summer) before a Wolf Trap performance. Food is good. But sitting outside and relaxing is the best."

  • "Had a great meL with friends before the Wolf Trap concert. The food was great, and the setting was lovely. Great experience!"

  • "Great waitress, but I agree with other reviewers that the food is hit or miss. Bragging that the recipes come from high-end restaurants does those establishments no favors. The tables are so crammed together that it feels claustrophobic even though you're technically outdoors. The wait staff didn't pick up our dirty dishes until we had a good stack of them and we pointed them out. But our waitress was friendly and did seem to be running around to her tables as best she could. The convenience of eating at Ovations helps takes the sting out of the mediocre food and the rather high bill. A plus is that they don't rush you away--linger over that full dessert buffet!"

  • "This was not a good dining experience. If these dishes represent the best of your restaurant, I have no desire to visit them."

  • "Going to Wolf Trap for a show there is just no better place to relax and have a fine meal before the show."

  • "Food is self service buffet style but better tasting. Simply too expensive. Dinner for two with 2-3 drinks total is $100."
    Dined on 7/31/2014
  • "Best thing Ovations has going for it are the convenience before a performance and the outdoors/view. The salad bar usually has good, fresh choices, but the hot food is steam table warmed over and the desserts are mass-produced, wish-I'd-just-brought-something-from-home cookies and brownies. The young, inexperienced-seeming waiter took our wine order and disappeared. We thought he forgot the order and were trying to find him when he finally showed up as we were almost done eating. The price has gone up steadily over the years, but the quality has not. It is WAY over-priced at $32/head for the buffet, and there is no longer an a la carte menu alternative available."

  • "First off the service is very good. But, that's it . Food was so so. Way over priced. We never recommend to anyone I like!"
    Dined on 7/30/2014
  • "Waited 25 mins after completing the meal before receiving the charge receipt to pay for the meal. Completely unsatisfactory. Will skip Ovations in the future and dine elsewhere before enjoying the Wolf Trap entertainment!"
    Dined on 7/29/2014
  • "The soups, salads and breads are so good, you can almost skip dinner. How nice to beat traffic and get good parking and relax with a meal and a drink before the show!"
