Diner Reviews
  • "Are you kidding me? I was hungry an hour after dinner..."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "Nice selection of entrees despite the limited menu. Everyone enjoyed their dish (Halbut, Bolognese, burger, trout and duck for our table). Pigs ears are crazy good. Waitress was initially attentive and, while not quick, was acceptable. Then service hit a wall, despite the fact it was not busy. I could even see the server eating in the kitchen. They had picked up half the finished plates from the table and never came back for the rest. I finally got up and told the waitress in the kitchen to come back, get the plates and ask about dessert. She came immediately and comped the appetizer plate (the charcuterie...which is good too)."

  • "It was loud.. there wasn't an option for that under "noise level." Food was great and cocktails too."

  • "The food was well prepared- fish stew, hamburg. pasta and beef ribs. Pretty good service. On the covered porch, the leftover moisture from a thunderstorm, felt refreshing as it misted in. However, meal over, stepping inside to leave brought the noise level to that of a packed bar- way too loud to enjoy a meal."

  • "We tried Outliers this past weekend and it was a great experience. The entrees were delicious and the dessert was spectacular. The Wine list was very good and we wished we had tried one of the cocktails from the menu as they looked pretty interesting. Oh well, maybe next time. We would definitely go back."

  • "The place has a hip atmosphere, though, there was a mix of ages (30s to 70s). My partner liked his fish while I thought mine had little taste. The roll was not to my liking. The wine is fairly priced. I wanted to like the place more than I did."

  • "a good time--great food and service was fine. Ran out of prosecco though had to substitute with champagne--prefer prosecco"

  • "The food was well-prepared, good-tasting, and innovative. A couple of ingredients we asked to be left out weren't, but these dishes were replaced quickly. That was part of the attentive, very friendly, and excellent service. The seats were uncomfortable, hard wood office chairs. The noise level was terrible, and we contributed to it because we had to talk loudly to be heard at all. That's one benefit to eating outside, which we weren't able to do. Yet altogether, the four of us had a fun evening!"

  • "Tuna was very fresh, great scotch selection. Good atmosphere (albeit a bit loud). Overall a very good experience. Would recommend it to anyone."

  • "Food was great. So loud we could not hear each other"

  • "Food is good, staff is friendly but very slow and inexperienced. Wasn't great, wasn't bad, overpriced. Tomatoes on burrata salad were the worse I have ever tasted, should not be on a plate at all. Would go back with less expectations. Great location."

  • "Honor is due the creators of Outliers who took a tired bar and turned it into a beautiful new urban space with marvelous views of Portland Harbor over the Harbor View Park. The food is excellent and creative, especially the presentation on seemingly handcrafted tableware."

  • "It was the first nice day and the first day of June. We decided to sit outside and I am happy that we did. The service was outstanding and the food was to die for. We had a very relaxing morning. Glad my friend suggested it."

  • "We enjoyed the short ribs and duck breast.. food was delicious. The fingerling potatoe was a bit doughy, the spinach was not to our liking.. but the remainder of the dish was excellent. The waitress recommend a lovely drink, I had two of them ( I cannot recall its name). This was my second time here.. I will be back. "

  • "We had an excellent meal at Outliers. All of us had a seafood dish, and all were delicious. It will be a wonderful place to have dinner outside when the weather finally warms up."

  • "Food was very good. Duck was great and the sauce was wonderful. Pricey for Portland. Restaurant is very loud, making you speak, almost shouting to be heard as everyone else is also. Enjoyed the conversations from about half the nearby tables."

  • "We enjoyed our food, but skip the donut holes. Omelets and blueberry muffin all great. Our "neighbor's" deviled egg was most interestingly presented and in the other direction, eggs Benedict looked inviting. The ambience is gray and dark and the seating not all that comfortable. For us "older folks" the noise level was unacceptable. We should not have to shout nor repeat what we have to say. It is near the water but the view is limited. The porch looked inviting in warmer weather. Parking is on the street. The West End is fun to visit. We got there early for our brunch -- it crowded up later on."

  • "We had a great dinner at Outliers! It was a little noisy, but if you go late enough it quiets down. Great dinner and interesting cocktail list. "

  • "We made the reservation early and requested a window seat. When we arrived a window seat for two was open. They did not give it to us because they were saving it for someone at 730.(ours was 645). So why were they more important than me?? The food and service was good, but that left a bad "taste" in my mouth!!"

  • "Overall we enjoiyed our dinner experience but I wouldn't be in a rush to go back. Cocktails were interesting and good as well as the appetizers. Our salads were limp and a bit bland. The main course of lobster and scallops was just okay. Scallops were only pan seared on one side and the lobster was a bit chewy. We had the chocolate cake desert which wasn't all that chocolatey. We will go back at some point to give the resaurant another try."

  • "I am well aware that this review makes me sound like I am much older than my 36 years, but this place was painfully loud. At a table for four, we were shouting at each other and even then often we were unable to hear. (And you can imagine that if our table was shouting, so was every other table.) We had to point at the menu to order because the waitress could not hear what we requesting. While the food was good, I will not return because of the volume."

  • "Very good restaurant. Loved the décor, food and service. Did find the noise level a bit loud. Would go again."

  • "Seated promptly with reservations. Glass was never empty and food was prepared perfectly. The ambiance was great as was the view (even if it was somewhat restricted). Probably my only gripe was the noise. While it made for a lively dining/bar setting it was extremely difficult not to repeat yourself due to the noise. Trying to carry a conversation across the table was frustrating, somewhat diminishing the dining experience. I believe this is due to the excessive use of hard surfaces, the sound simply has no place to go."

  • "This was our first time eating here. The place is cute but very noisy! Our food was delicious ! The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I had the lobster and gnocchi and every component was great. My daughter had the vegetarian option which was good too. The only complaint I could have, besides the noise level, is I wish restaurants had more than one vegetarian option. "

  • "Our waitress was most attentive throughout our visit. She was open to feedback and sincerely listened when we offered constructive feedback on one of our deserts. I don't recall her name but this was just her 3rd day working there and she did an excellent job. She made our experience 5 star."

  • "Our first dinner here last July was enjoyable and the food was good. This time, we went on a Saturday night and arrived at 6PM for our reservation. We ordered cocktails, which were good. Our appetizers arrived too quickly, while we were just starting our drinks. Our burrata salad was average and the mussels were served with a rather watery and under seasoned sauce. My lobster was overcooked and served with a sauce that was so sour that I could not eat it. My wife had cauliflower that was both soggy and burned, accompanied by 2 sour and flavorless sides, an inedible vegan attempt. I sent my lobster back and got a hamburger, which was edible. My wife didn't have the heart to send hers back, but got some peanut m&m's on the way home."

  • "Wonderful brunch and great space!and the service was amazing!!"

  • "Had a nice pre Mothers' day dinner Saturday night. As with previous visits, the food was well prepared, with an emphasis on local ingredients. The five of us had 4 different entrees and salads/appetizers. All were very tasty and well prepared. The setting and inside decor is very stylish, but the noise level is very high and the service was a bit impersonal, perhaps because it was so loud that we found it hard to converse with the waitress as well as among us at the table -- and we were in a corner by the door and sitting across from each other "

  • "This was our second visit but we were disappointed. Slow service ( waitress twice advised us our food was coming- a bad sign), extremely noisy, and one entree was undercooked and uninteresting. We will not return. "

  • "After reviewing the menu and comparing to other places we decided to go here and I'm so glad we did! It was absolutely wonderful!!! Smoked salmon on a bialy, eggs Benedict with fresh Maine lobster, breakfast burrito, boozy coffee, and a mimosa between two of us was amazing!!! Will definite to return when again in Portland!"

  • "The food was great. The chairs were extremely uncomfortable. It got very loud in the restaurant when it got busy at the bar. "

  • "My husband and I ate at outliers on Saturday night April 26. The hostess was very frazzled. We had reservations for 8 and showed up at 8. The hostess told us our table would be a few minutes and never directed us to the bar, we thought it would be quick. She was setting 2 tables and seemed very irritated, never smiled. After 10 minutes we asked if we had a reservation and she responded " there is only one of me". When were seated the waitress was very friendly. We ordered 2 glasses of wine and were told it would be a few minutes because all the wine glasses were in the dishwasher. The food was very good. I will not hurry back. There are too many really good places to eat in portland with excellent service. "

  • "The restaurant is small with tables close to each other. The food and service were great. The wait staff knows the menu and handled my lactose intolerance well."

  • "I keep tellingly friends to go, now we're just bringing them there. This is a great little gem and always enjoy the flavors, presentation and the food is always the temperature it is supposed to be!!! Can't say enough good about it. TRY IT!"

  • "Breath of fresh air and off the beaten path. Nice bar, good food, just enough vibe. Cool place. "

  • "I love the food and cocktails at Outliers but it is crazy loud in there and the lighting is so dim that I couldn't even read my menu. There were some timing issues the night we were there and food took too long to arrive, but the server made us feel better by comping our dessert. Good food and drink, good service, sleek and upscale atmosphere, but too loud for comfortable conversation. (I don't think one should have to shout to make oneself heard at a small table.) Some sound-absorbing material at the ceiling and/or carpeting on the floor would help immensely and make me a more frequent diner."

  • "Great food, really nice (surprising) spot, on the edge of neighborhood overlooking Casco Bay Bridge. Food was really good, and reasonably priced. The service was really bad, however. After 20 minutes, I had to ask the hostess if we had a waitress, and when she finally arrived, seemed to be bothered by us being there (even with reservation). At the end of the meal, she asked if we were considering dessert....when we answered yes, she sighed, and said, "Well, I guess I have to go through them with you, then"...and she wasn't kidding! Maybe we caught them on a night when they were short staffed. The bartender and hostess were great, and the food really shines. Only gripe would be our waitress and a sub-par wine list."

  • "great except noise level, we are older gals and it felt like we were yelling most of the time, going to try again soon , loved it except for that!"

  • "Portions small, prices high, food good but unremarkable, service mediocre. We are four women with small to medium appetites & we left hungry. Our bill was $165 + tip for 3 glasses of wine, 3 salads & 4 entrees. I had the vegetable risotto - $17 - it was barely warm enough. bland & included few vegetables - 2 pieces of artichoke and 4 small parsnips. The salmon and scallop dishes were similarly small & luke warm $29 & $25. The salads were fine, but expensive. I found the lack of beets (4 small bits) in the beet & green salad a little comical. The server was friendly, but not that knowledgeable & forgot a few things. In a foodie town like Portland, I don't understand how you can survive charging such prices for unremarkable food/service."
