Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I had dinner on Sunday. We've been there several times. The restaurant is excellent, reliable and quiet. We had the Restaurant Week Menu. We had the lemon risotto with snails, the ocean trout and the deserts, which were very tasty. When we arrived, the hostess seated us right away. The service is very well organized and efficient. The waiter was very nice and polite."

  • "The food is quite good. At a lower price point, it would get 5 stars but for $30-$40 per entree the expectation is quite high and the food nearly delivers. Presentation is very nice, and the flavor and technique are at a high level. Everything we had was quite good - the barley salad was fun and tangy, the escargot were very nicely prepared, pork and steak were very nicely done and presented. The desserts were rather small and disappointing, though, except for the cappuccino sundae which was excellent. Ambiance is great, feels like an old-timey place with red leather benches, but also definite modern feel with the fixtures. Overall, I would recommend to a friend."

  • "Food was great, waiter was delightful. I'm pretty sure anything you order will end up delicious."

  • "I've been here many times, but this was my first Restaurant Week experience. My friend and I started with lemon risotto with escargots, which we agreed was delicious. This was followed by a smoked pork chop entree and a hanger steak entree. Both good, not great. I'm not usually a fan of prix-fixe meals, and this confirmed my feelings. I love this restaurant, and would much rather choose from their regular menu which does not disappoint."

  • "The food was very good, and the ambiance is great, the service however was really slow. 6:30 reservation and did not leave until close to 10pm. For ex. ordered bottle of wine, the server presented bottle but did not return to pour for twenty minutes. In addition, the hostess assumed our long-winded dinner was due to our conversing, as she came over at one point and asked us to relocate to the bar because she needed the table--she did offer to buy us drinks to make up for the fact which we said no. At that point we were actually trying to leave and waiting for the server to charge our credit cards so it was upsetting. The host should have checked with the server about the table and would have learned that we were trying to settle our bill."

  • "Dined for the first time at this restaurant during restaurant week. Had looked on the website at the menu and decor. The red leather booths and atmosphere were mentioned. Had an early reservation at 5:30 pm for two people. Restaurant at that time was almost empty yet we were taken upstairs to an area with wooden square tables with table cloths. As the restaurant began to fill up, there were several tables downstairs with the red leather seating where two people sat at one end and another party was seated a few chairs away. The dining venue wasn't what I expected; however, the food was delicious and portion sizes larger than other NY restaurants. The lemon risotto was outstanding. Very convenient location for dinner before Beacon Theatre."

  • "Red leather banquettes and mellow wood paneling lend grown-up sophistication, a rare pleasure on the kid-friendly UWS. Food is consistently solid and worth the price, especially the prix fixe option. Unfortunately they had run out of the featured rose and warm-weather gazpacho by 8:30 when we ordered dinner. Other pleasant choices were found, so hardly a disaster. But still a small disappointment on an otherwise lovely evening."

  • "Ate there pre-concert. The food was divine! Soft shell crabs with a rice corn side, nothing was left. Martini was best ever!. Beautiful red leather banquet seating."

  • "The ambiance is comfortable, the decor is soothing. The noise level is energetic. The star of the evening was the food, all of which is highly recommended, especially the gazpacho, the pork chop and the hanger steak. We'll be back."

  • "The seafood salad was excellent, and the restaurant helpfully split it for us to share. The octopus was good. Restaurant let us order corn risotto -- an accompaniment to another dish -- as a side order by itself. It was delicious. The hangar steak was also very good."

  • "As always, our meal (gazpacho, skate, crab) was excellent. But the service went beyond attentive into "we want you out of here as quickly as possible." Plates were cleared as soon as knife & fork touched a plate; dessert menus were placed even as plates were removed. In addition, the room was exceptionally noisy. Based on previous visits, we expected a more relaxed experience."

  • "We saw Ouest when we were walking down the street so I Yelped it and the reviews sounded interesting. It was great. The server was knowledgable and nice, the food was delicious and approachable. We would definitely go back."

  • "We had a pretty good meal here over Fourth of July weekend.they had prix fiix special which included soft shell crab-"sandwhich:which was nice-also oyster stew. the seats in bar were dark and not the most comfortable...,but i didnt realize there might have been a choice.perhaps sitting in the restaurant proper would have been a much more pleasant experience.may try that..."

  • "Had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings. So much food!!! All 5 courses were wonderful with one exception - the skate was way too salty. We didn't bother telling the waiter and ate it - our mistake as I'm sure he would've done something about it. I've done tastings at other restaurants and I've never seen such large portions! The wines were perfect with each course. One in particular was so good that I asked the waiter to write the name down for me. When I researched it at home, I discovered that it was a $12 bottle - a true find! And lastly, the waiter was so professional and friendly - so much so that the dining experience was enhanced by him."

  • "Food was ok (not great) but they jack-up the cost for inferior cuts of fish (skate, sea trout)."

  • "The food was wonderful, the table (on the landing) lovely and quiet. The service, however, was erratic - my dining companion ordered a before- dinner drink and it came right away. I ordered one, and it did not arrive until after the server had collected our salads. The salads arrived very shortly after they were ordered - then he brought my before-dinner drink - then the entrees arrived, almost too soon! Overall, a great place - just wish the service had been more calm and orderly."

  • "Went with family for father's day..food was excellent but service was subpar. We had a reservation and had to wait for 30 minutes for our table even though we were on time. ridiculous."

  • "great food in a welcoming, well-lit setting (those red circular banquettes!). especially great dishes include the smoked duck breast, the smoked salmon, the gazpacho, the vinaigrette. and the French fries (!)."

  • "I've never been disappointed at Ouest. The special appetizer was provolone brulee, which was basically melted cheese on a plate, but delicious. The seafood salad appetizer was my entree, since I wasn't particularly hungry. It had lobster, scallops, and shrimp, in good supply. My companion reported her ravioli was just ok though. And I really love the flavor of the lemon poundcake I had for dessert."

  • "Ouest is a consistently wonderful restaurant. The braised cabbage is delicious and both their meat and fish done perfectly. A pleasure to eat out"

  • "Very pretty restaurant with great round banquettes which accommodated our group of 5 very comfortably. The service was very good and friendly. The food, while good, falls short of excellent. Mostly because the sauces and dressings are made and applied with a very heavy hand. I found the salad and side dishes gloppy. Nevertheless I would go back and recommend this atmospheric UWS restaurant , especially for special occasions"

  • " Delightful dining experience. The decor was lovely and the noise level was very very low. Intimate dining. Our meals were all very delicious and artfully presented. the service was equally wonderful. we will return and try more from the menu."

  • "We've been to Ouest more than 30 times since it opened and it continues to be our favorite. We can't come to New York without visiting Ouest. Their martini is a classic. My favorite appetizer is the smoked sturgeon (now smoked trout) salad with frisee, poached egg and lardons. My wife had the monkfish on this visit and declared that it was the best she's ever had."

  • "terrific food, sense of privacy, lovely wait staff; just a wonderful evening."

  • ""Simply grilled" salmon was a tiny portion from the tail end and overdone despite a medium rare order. Skate was very mediocre. Service was inexperienced--a summer intern? Polenta--generally a must--was gloppy, starchy and not particularly tasty. House salad starter was good and sauteed spinach side was good. WHAT HAPPENED?"
    Dined on 6/2/2014
  • "We've had a lot of great meals at Ouest over the years. On this visit, the restaurant was uncomfortably warm, the service was terribly slow, and the food was nowhere near as good as what we've come to expect. Bummer. "

  • "As with my only previous visit here about four years ago, the food was terrific and the service attentive and efficient. Choices aren't terribly numerous, and portions are too large, but what they do, they do splendidly. When the room is full, the noise level can begin to bear down."
    Dined on 5/20/2014
  • "The service here is friendly and skilled. The rooms are comfortable and attractive. Importantly, the food is very good with a couple of unexpectedly delicious surprises for a few dishes. It is expensive. If you've got the money, it's worth a try."
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "The menu is varied, the wine selection is great, and the ambiance is nice wherever you are seated. We celebrated my birthday here and it was a perfect place to do so with a small group of family. The prices are a bit high, which is why I don't frequent here, but it's always definitely worth the spend."

  • "Truly not a very good dining experience...decor was dated, the menu limited and the service mediocre at best. Our table/booth was very tight, uncomfortable and awkward. I am sorry to give such a poor review as a good friend recommended this restaurant highly but had not been there for several years. "
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Everything was OK, nothing great. Squab dry, steak ordered medium rare, came out just a tich too well done, service competent but not especially helpful, decor needs refreshing. They need to put some energy back in their game. On the positive side, the mixed green salad is still wonderful and the bartenders know everything about every major league player that is playing or has played the game."

  • "I have lived in the neighborhood for 8 years and visited Quest in the past. I recently visited and was disappointed to find pre-made dishes which allowed for no substitutions and no ability to negotiate dietary restrictions. Additionally, my party, which included African Americans received "that" undesirable table too close to the front door for comfort again with no ability to negotiate better placement. I think the restaurant is tired or lazy or both. "
