Diner Reviews
  • "We have dined at Ouest previously with better results, but on this evening, our dinner was less than a success. The appetizers were fine- gravlax and the mixed seasonal greens. We chose the rack of lamb as our main course. The rack looked beautiful and was cooked as ordered, but was impossible to cut much less eat. The server replaced it with the steak, but it too was full of gristle and difficult to cut and eat. At these prices ($37 for the lamb, $53 for the steak), this shouldn't happen. The restaurant did remove both from the bill after our complaints. It will be some time before we return."

  • "Passover brought few guests and chef's night off it seemed. Only delicious things were the hummus spread and baguette. Otherwise the food was forgettable. Nice staff, but something off on kitchen last night."

  • "The endive salad was generous in portion size but the dressing was harsh in flavor. The entree of crispy duck breast was not crispy. It came in a bowl that made cutting the meat with a knife difficult, and was presented in a broth that took away any crispiness. This was not an enjoyable dinner experience, despite the very pleasant staff."

  • "Sunday brunch at Ouest never fails. Excellent food, good service (very friendly server, but had to keep asking for coffee/water refills from staff) and a hip yet cozy and classic atmosphere to the place."

  • "We had the pleasure of a wonderful meal to celebrate my wife's birthday. It's not your every day restaurant. Not exactly a young crowd. However, when you'd like to celebrate an occasion or get together with special friends, Ouest is the place to go."

  • "Good food as usual, if at high prices. We have been regular diners here, and we had alerted the restaurant that it was our anniversary -- which they ignored."

  • "Great food, even better than when it opened some years ago, in a handsome, welcoming space. An unpretentious, exceptionally delicious place to come for any special occasion."

  • "Wow! It has been about 12 years since I was here. When the place first opened we used to say that the UWS finally had a restaurant worth taking the 1 train for. it does not disappoint. The special melted provolone cheese appetizer and perfectly prepared duck breast were outstanding. I won't wait 12 years next time."

  • "The skate was bland and the steak was ok though nothing special. The dining room was freezing cold, and despite telling the hostess when we sat down that it was too chilly, and reminding them halfway through dinner, I ended up eating with my coat on. When I called to complain to the manager about this after dinner, he told me that they had to keep it cold because the heat in the kitchen would rise to the restaurant's balcony, making it unsuitable for those upstairs! He then hung up on me. We were a party of two women, and the casual contempt he had for that was unmistakable. Ridiculous to say in this day and age, but had a man been with us, I believe we would have been treated with much more respect."

  • "To tell you the truth; I was excited about finally getting to eat at Ouest. The experience came up short. The food was ok, the service was poor. The Wine fell short, the choice we made never really opened up and we spoke to the waiter on it twice. Never offered us a new bottle or to bring his manager over. He had no clue on how to pour wine into a glass. He was very young & inexperienced. It was a Monday, but at the prices we paid, no excuses. Glad we went, will not be back."

  • "Food was outstanding, both my husband and I got the hangar steak which was cooked beautifully and melted in our mouths and the cauliflower soup was delicious. Although we still enjoyed dining at Ouest, our service was lacking. Our waiter seemed annoyed to be waiting on us from the moment we sat down, and had minimal interest in our needs. He never once came back to check on us after our food came."

  • "We went to the restaurant for our anniversary. Our sons, unbeknownst to us, had ordered us a bottle of wine as a gift. CHUCK was so helpful to them in making the selection, which took, I believe, more than one phone call. So kind and helpful. And the food was delicious."

  • "I walk past this seemingly tiny restaurant almost every day and barely notice it. What a pleasant surprise to walk in and find a cool bar with innovative cocktails and a great bartender, a large restaurant with great round booths and amazing, creative, delicious food! The French "breadsticks" and hummus set the tone and it just keeps getting better from there. The skate is fabulous!"

  • "Loved the semi-circular red booths. We felt part of the restaurant but could speak more privately with one another. Really nice restaurant."

  • "an oasis of a high class restaurant in a sea of middling UWS eateries."

  • "I enjoyed my visit to Ouest for brunch. It was so good, that i am thinking of going back, which by living in NYC its something rare i do, since there are so many different and new places to go. The food was very delicioius. I had the french toast and the Omelette souffle. Both amazing. My only problem was that the brunch is on a pre-fix menu. Which is sad, because the dishes look amazing and if they are as good as the ones i had, its a shame they cant be tasted. I asked the waiter if i could get the frech toast and the omelette and he went to ask in the kitchen. They were very gracious and told me that they would make an exception that time. The place looks great. The service was great too. I recommend this place"

  • "old world ambiance, a little stuffy. good plain food (if a little over priced) a fit if you need a basic, classy restaurant in the neighborhood. Older crowd; pleasant service. Nothing memorable but also nothing wrong with it."

  • "I enjoyed my meal and my time at Ouest. I saw that it had great reviews online and was close to the Beacon Hotel and located in the Upper West Side neighborhood of NYC. I was seated immediately for my 630 reservation and was by myself (traveling for business). They seated me in a quiet area of the restaurant. I ordered from the prix fixe menu and had roasted beats with pistachios and chevre cheese, salmon and mashed potatoes, and crème fraiche. I also tried their Hemingway daiquiri, a house specialty. All were delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone who visits this part of NYC."

  • "We received a very warm welcome to the restaurant, were the first to arrive for dinner, and a bit early. The bartender was excellent, we enjoyed sitting at the bar for a drink. However, both the Restaurant Week and regular menus were disappointing, not showcasing an imaginative or trendy chef, and lacking in presentation. Perhaps the regulars prefer reliable fare, but for these first timers, not worth a return trip."

  • "It was my Birthday. Went with 2 close friends. Food was great. Our Waiter (Jarrod) was helpful and We had a high booth in the middle of the room (try to get one) Every time I eat at Ouest, I always have a great meal and a great overall time! Great energy at this restaurant!!"

  • "Ouest is a great dining spot for taking your wife or significant other. It's a little pricy but they treat you like a king and the food is very good. My wife and I sat next to Lesley Stahl from 60 minutes. She didn't ask me for my autograph."

  • "Wonderful food; a real plus on the upper west side. Pricey, but worth it as long as you can afford it. Seats upstairs are more private; tables other than the banquettes do not allow a private conversation...that's the one drawback."

  • "I have gone here in the past. This time was disappointed in the food. Lamb and duck was chewy and soup had no flavor. Too expensive for what you get."

  • "Ouest is a very deceptive restaurant! As you walk in to a small bar area and a couple of booths, you assume the place is small and mellow. Then, you walk past the booths into the back and the restaurant opens up with a wide dining space and tons of energy. Our meal started with a decadent truffled omlette with a decadent sauce and a rich tomato soup. I had the venison with spaetzle and my wife had the hanger steak. We finished our meal with creme caramel, which was incredible. All in all, a fantastic meal with great service and a fun evening. We highly recommend this restaurant and will be back when we visit NYC in May!"

  • "Having been lucky enough to garner a ticket for the Allman Brothers Band show at the nearby Beacon Theatre, it's always my tradition to dine at Ouest, and I've never been disappointed. Chef Tom and his staff always make it a pleasant experience all around, even for a single diner on a busy Tuesday night. I opted for the Prix fixe and felt the preparations were spot on. I love beets, but the Ouest beet salad is still one of the best I've had. I've tried to recreate it, but can't do it as well as they do. For entrée, I chose the slightly smoked salmon and it was perfectly cooked with that nice, crispy skin you always hope for. When they say "slight smoke," they aren't kidding. But, there was a hint there and it really complemented the fish"

  • "I have been to Ouest quite a number of times, and always loved the food. I do not know what was wrong this past Sunday evening! The food was bland, even the short ribs that my guest ordered!!!! The restaurant was actually not even half full! Something is not right there!"

  • "I ate here in March 2014 for Sunday brunch and the food was fantastic, as was the service. Ouest has very large comfortable booths and an awesome bread basket that puts other brunches places on the UWS (with lines out the door) to shame. Try the mushroom omelette souffle. Very yummy & highly recommended."

  • "This restaurant is a great addition to the west side. While pricey, servings are generous and delicious sitting upstairs is much quieter and more private than the downstairs area."

  • "The atmosphere downstairs is quite ordinary. The table waiter was very good, but the bus staff needs training. The food on restaurant week was interesting and well prepared."

  • "The food was well prepared, nicely served and as ordered. The sorbet dessert was too icy. I still don't get why coffee is always an extra charge."

  • "Go early (11 a.m.) for Sunday brunch for an ideal place to catch up with old friends and expect superb, high-quality food. We actually had an opportunity to talk, with wait staff respectful."

  • "Tables were close together. The kale salad for NY Restaurant week was not the same as on the 2014 on-line menu., although it was very good. The so called "pork chop" was instead a large slice of ham. There were no side vegetables with the ham other than a very slight portion of what looked like pureed squash. I was told that sides are available for an additional charge."

  • "One of my guests had to send his hanger steak back as it was so tough he couldn't cut it. My other guest's lamb was overcooked. My venison was fine. Appetizers were very good and the desserts were OK. I had been there before and was very satisfied then but I was disappointed this time."

  • "We went to ouest for my birthday celebration based on its reputation. I ordered medium rare rack of lamb. My partner ordered striped bass. The rack was served not carved and upon its return is was raw in the center. You could smell the old fish as it was being served. It was dry and inedible. No options were available due to "Friday night of restaurant week". We were there on Saturday night? All in all it was a big disappointment . Thanks to the host/manager we weren't charged for this meal. Not enough tho won't ever be back."

  • "We dined from the New York Restaurant Week menu offered by Ouest and were very pleased because it provided us with an opportunity to broadly sample the restaurant's fare and we will go back. Service was attentive and excellent. The wine list is too pricey and Ouest (as well as other NYC restaurants) should take a page out of Becco's book and offer better wines at more reasonable prices -- starting at $25.00."

  • "I am a Ouest regular and there was one serious flaw last night. It was a very cold and blustery night and my guest and I asked to be relocated because of the icy blasts whenever the front door opened. The reseating was done with the Ouest staff's customary charm and grace and a flawless dinner continued."
