They gave us free sake when we
accidentally spilled it, and we really appreciated the gesture. Sushi was delicious."

Sushi was great - fresh and well
prepared. Service was slow and rather unattentive."

The Bay Area is sadly lacking in
spotless sushi bars with amazing fare. Otoro Sushi meets and goes far beyond that Japanese standard: absolutely delicious, imaginative food served by friendly, efficient, polite staff in an artfully lovely, clean setting. The small space means you must create privacy via courtesy -- a small price to pay for such always-delicious dining pleasures of Japanese standards and daily specials. From their house special Otoro Roll to the incredibly light and eye-rollingly-tasty gyoza, sunomonos, tempuras & impressive selection of saki, Otoro Sushi is THE off-Market Street Hayes Valley tiny but terrific treasure. It stars on our well-whittled-down A-list of San Francisco's best. Reservations a VERY good idea."

Small place but excellent sushi.
Menu seems to change a lot but fish was superb, staff was friendly prices were reasonable. Would definitely return."
Dined on 2/27/2014
This is the best Japanese
restaurant that I have visited in in a long time. I plan to come again soon."
Dined on 2/22/2014
a very nice room with good
lighting and beautiful roses,, The sushi was lovely the cooked salmon is way over done and dry . The chicken wings were very good,,,,,"

It was amazing, the food was so
delicious. And the service terrific. They kept on bringing the food fast and you can tell that everything was fresh."
Dined on 2/8/2014
Otoro Sushi is consistently
excellent with both a wonderful selection of fresh sushi and sushimi as well as Japanese style cooked food. The people are wonderful and service is great at this small (30 person) intimate restaurant. Truly a favorite!!!"

We had dinner here before the
symphony and had an enjoyable experience. Nice selection of fresh fish and sushi, somewhat expensive but expected. Good service. Quiet enough to enjoy conversation. Somewhat tightly packed in, however. Would return."

Don't rush out and swarm them!
This is a neighborhood gem close enough to the Opera House to make a marvelous pre-dinncer spot. Everything was delicious, especially the soft shell crab special and the sushi. You wont be disappointed."
Dined on 1/6/2014
great food and awesome service!
really glad I stopped by this place :)"
Dined on 1/4/2014
The food is quite innovative and I
encourage you to order off the chalk board menu for the best experience. Exciting and interesting combinations, nice sized portions, and the food arrived in a timely manner despite how busy they were...This is a tiny restaurant with very poor waiting space, and on a cold night, it can be chilly when the door is opened. Despite having a reservation, we waited almost 30 minutes for a table for two. Service was very good and we will definitely return."
Dined on 12/14/2013
The food was delicious and
selection was varied. We asked for something that was not on the menu (Chawanmushi), a delectable soup that is not very easily thrown together and they made it!!! It is a small restaurant so reservations are likely a must and you may have to wait a little even then. Thanks O Toro! Great experience!"
Dined on 12/19/2013
This neighborhood sushi/Japanese
tapas bar and restaurant maybe small, but it is big on fresh fish and great service. Melt in your mouth bits of blue fin, tuna toro, hirame, Aji, etc. and the most FABULOUS garlic crab ever (we had a second order). This is a must try if you love sushi and other Japanese favorites. Jimmy handles the front and he moves effortlessly making his customers happy. We loved Otoro. The Lampkins"

I booked Otoro for my birthday
dinner last minute and was expecting a mediocre, chain-type sushi place. Wrong. This cozy joint near Hayes/Civic Center was the best sushi I have had in quite a while! Everything was so fresh. The selection was abundant. Even the shoyu ramen was divine. And the best part? It will not break the bank! From now on, Otoro Sushi will be the only place I visit!"
Dined on 11/4/2013
Otoro is still one of the best
sushi restaurants in San Francisco. The quality of fish is always consistently high. The specials often feature walu, aji, albacore toro, and otoro. The sake menu also features some wonderful bottles. While you do not have the one-on-one sushi chef relationship, you can rest assured that there is someone making sure each and every piece of fish is prepared properly. If you are looking for fresh, properly cut sushi or sashimi along with some Japanese delicacies, Otoro will meet your needs."

We went here with a few colleagues
for a work dinner and it was an awesome experience. Loved the fact that the restaurant was small which allowed for a nice conversation. The food was superb, and the prices - more than fair. Especially lived the spider rolls, the Otoro rolls (wrapped in mango!) Highly recommend this place."
Dined on 11/21/2013
Small (10) tables with sushi bar,
and a bustling vibe, with terrific selection and preparation. Just go chef's choice and enjoy."
Dined on 11/18/2013
We enjoyed excellent sushi, gyoza
and grilled mackerel in this pleasant, lively space. Service was charming and helpful, though a little slow for a pre-opera dinner. We'll definitely be back to try some more adventurous offerings."
Dined on 11/15/2013
Very fresh sushi. Delicious
Albacore toro - we should have ordered more. The chicken heart skewers were fantastic. Service just a tad slow (but no big deal)."
Dined on 11/8/2013
Perfect dinner with a few friends.
Great food - simple, high-quality sushi. Not much more to say -- everyone wants to eat some delicious sushi now and then, and Otoro's got it. Good place, easy seating, great location."
Dined on 10/24/2013
Great food and ambiance. The food
is tasty, delivered quickly and the music is nice and soft. This is a great neighborhood restaurant with very nice decor."
Dined on 10/15/2013
Otoro is far and away one of the
cities best sushi & sake restaurants!"
Dined on 9/29/2013
Loved the fresh selection of fish
and specialty rolls. Hot tapas were great! Will definitely come back"
Dined on 9/28/2013
Service: Friendly, timely, no
issues here. Selection of fish: Very good, except that they were out of the two things I most wanted to order. Guess that's what happens when your reservation is late at night on a Friday. Quality of fish: Very good - the aji was great, the otoro pretty good as well. We ordered one of the rolls from the daily specials board "dan" namite, which was a winner, as were the dragon and lava rolls. The spicy tuna was sort of average, and I think the lemon on the golden state roll was a little bit overpowering - the slices should have been smaller. Price/value: Nothing spectacular - prices weren't crazy high or any great deal - about what I'd expect for sushi in SF. Definitely plan to go back."
Dined on 9/28/2013
Great location and I love that you
can make reservations. The sushi was good, but nothing amazing. Maybe we just ordered wrong. I'd go back again."
Dined on 9/21/2013
Otoro Sushi is always a winner!
Very fresh fish, interesting specials, great service and a very nice group of people run the restaurant. Highly recommended."
Dined on 9/22/2013
well-priced, quality sushi/sashimi
and friendly, attentive service."
Dined on 9/14/2013
We ducked into Otoro Sushi
pre-Opera and were delighted by very tasty food and quick service. We indulged in several of the specials, sea scallops (sliced into four discs and served in scallop shells), garlic soft shell crab, hamachi tartare, and aji (Spanish Mackeral. The latter dish was a two course dish: sashimi is served first, then the skeleton is deep-fried and served as a crunchy foil. Very interesting combination of flavors and textures. The kitchen was quick and dishes came out in rapid order, so patrons of the arts won't be late for their evening performances."
Dined on 9/15/2013
We had a combination of apetizers,
rolls and sushi and enjoyed it all. Really great food overall; worth making a reservation as the place is very small...."
Dined on 9/8/2013
We had a group of 10 for an early
5:30 dinner before the opera and the restaurant was very accommodating. It is a small space but worked out great for us as we could hear each other talk and we weren't rushed out The group all enjoyed everything ordered."
Dined on 9/7/2013
I've eaten sushi in Tokyo before,
and Otoro's is on par with it, if not better! This really was one of the best sushi experiences of my life."
Dined on 8/28/2013
Otoro has a fantastic selection of
sushi. We had several rolls, maki, sushi and starters and all were delicious. The gyoza were excellent, along with the otoro (fatty tuna) sushi and pork belly! The restaurant is quite small but I really like the layout, it makes it intimate. You can sit along the bar and watch the pro's at work, too! AND they take reservations!!"
Dined on 8/22/2013
We enjoyed the monkfish pate,
garlic soft crab, and Spider rolls. I would like to go back and try the other interesting-sounding rolls - and their desserts. This place's got interesting-sounding plates - and I would definitely order these over the more usual, "ordinary"-sounding plates (e.g., ramen). I would also check out their blackboard for specials. If I'm in the area, I would definitely also go there for lunch. I am not that much into sushi, but this one place has convinced me otherwise."
Dined on 8/18/2013
Except fresh sushi. Staff is
extremely friendly and service is efficient and fast. Our favorite was the fresh scallops on the sell! Simply excellent!! Will definitely come back!"
Dined on 8/16/2013
We had an OpenTable reservation
for 8:30 but did not get seated till after 9. Crammed in the doorway. Sushi was good at a reasonable price. Chefs and servers were good but the place needs someone to manage reservations/ seating..."
Dined on 8/4/2013
The sushi was delicious! The
service perfect! A perfect place to go before the symphony!"
Dined on 8/2/2013
Food here is fantastic BUT we
waited for 40 mins for our OpenTable booked table. Then the service was slow. It took about 10 mins for them to grab our CC's from the table with the check and it is a small restaurant so they walked past numerous times before we got their attention. Shame as the sushi here is phenomenal!"
Dined on 8/1/2013
Small, intimate place with
friendly staff and exceptional food. Will return."
Dined on 7/31/2013
Great Sushi and incredibly
reasonable prices (a lot of options for around $6 for 6 pieces). The staff seemed a little busy at times so our service wasn't always as prompt as I would've liked, which was strange given how small the restaurant was. However, the quality of food made it worth the trip."
