cutting corners...the vegetable
tempura roll seems to be 2 pieces of carrot fried to a crisp, and the shrimp tempura also suffers from the bad fry...the service takes forever even if you beg for a check so not a good idea to plan a concert after this meal. The sushi is not delicate its very salty as if preserved for a long sea voyage. The waiters are unfriendly and try not to look at the waving customers. The beer is warm.... NOt sure what the draw is here?...... but the best thing here is the colored glass lights. "

Food was good but the waitress was
very unfriendly and looked like working there was a painful experience."

We came to Otoro for our wedding
dinner, just four of us after a City Hall wedding followed by a ferry ride to Sausalito. What a perfect day, and Jimmy ended it superbly (as usual). Special, special sushi superbly prepared. I have known Otoro since before it was opened, and know the care and quality that goes into serving every customer. A neighborhood gem indeed!"

First time dining in Otoro Sushi.
I arrived on time for our reservation. The maître d' / manager was stacking glasses when I entered and said "I'll be right with you". A minute later, he came over and asked if I had a reservation. I said that I did and gave him my name. He said he would seat me when the entire party (2) was there. I explained that my friend was parking the car. Despite the fact that there were 5 open tables, he insisted that I remain standing in the tiny entrance way until my friend arrived. We asked for an ice bucket to keep the white wine chilled but they said they only had one ice bucket and it was already in use. Despite the nice service from the table-side server and the OK sushi I will not be returning here."

I took two friends out for a
pre-concert meal on a week night, our first time here. We sampled about ten different dishes --hot and cold appetizers, including veggie caterpillar roll, dragon roll, sea bream, the astonishing asparagus and kobe beef special, melt in your mouth tofu agadashi, a special of green lipped mussels with a spicy sauce, the seaweed salad, and more. Everything was exquisite, delicious, beautifully to look at, and presented by an attentive and welcoming server. The two specials were so good that we ordered repeats. I cannot recommend this place enough! Prices commensurate with the area, and very good value for this level of quality. Be sure to make reservations; many people waiting around 7PM."

The sushi is tasty and fresh here
but the manager is absolutely rude. He doesn't know how to treat customers from the way he talks. We felt like he was barking at us the moment we walked in the door and when we paid our bill. I have never had a manager point his finger at my face when being spoken to. Just rude. The waitresses who serve the tables are great though."

Their Otoro on the specials board
is the best sashimi I've had in SF."

Always a fantastic experience.
Great fish and sake'"

Otoro Sushi is my go to place if I
want to have sushi before a performance nearby. The rolls are creative and artistically presented and the fish is very fresh and cut properly. The service is warm and efficient, which is important for pre-performance dining. Highly recommended!"

Went there for a two year
anniversary. We had hamachi sashimi, uni nigri, aji nigri (spanich mackeral), iwashi nigri (sardine), otorro (fatty tuna) and kanpachi nigri (amber jack) and uni. All of the fish was very fresh and the cuts were a good size. The spicy squid tentacle appetizer was really good as well. We had one of the rolls as well and it was the only thing that was forgettable. This place is for good fish, not specialty rolls. Two large sakes and two beers rounded it out for $115 before tip. We'll be back."
Dined on 3/11/2014
I went with friends and had
several nigiri, some sushi rolls and some sashimi and everything was delicious. Their sake list is also very good. We did have to wait about 15 minutes for a table to open up AFTER our reservation time, even though our reservation was for 9:30pm, so that was not so great, but we fixed that issue by getting a bottle of sake to start drinking while waiting. The fish is really fresh and delicious. I spent time in Japan (several months in total) and I find the sushi here to be of very good quality even when comparing it to food in Japan."

Some of the best fish my boyfriend
and I have ever had. Everyone (sushi chefs, wait staff, manager) was so helpful and nice. Pretty small place, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. Great place to grab dinner with a friend or significant other."

Otoro Sushi never fails to
deliver. Always fresh, perfectly prepared, great service, very nice people....this is the place to go for Japanese food in the Hayes Valley area."

They gave us free sake when we
accidentally spilled it, and we really appreciated the gesture. Sushi was delicious."

Sushi was great - fresh and well
prepared. Service was slow and rather unattentive."

The Bay Area is sadly lacking in
spotless sushi bars with amazing fare. Otoro Sushi meets and goes far beyond that Japanese standard: absolutely delicious, imaginative food served by friendly, efficient, polite staff in an artfully lovely, clean setting. The small space means you must create privacy via courtesy -- a small price to pay for such always-delicious dining pleasures of Japanese standards and daily specials. From their house special Otoro Roll to the incredibly light and eye-rollingly-tasty gyoza, sunomonos, tempuras & impressive selection of saki, Otoro Sushi is THE off-Market Street Hayes Valley tiny but terrific treasure. It stars on our well-whittled-down A-list of San Francisco's best. Reservations a VERY good idea."

Small place but excellent sushi.
Menu seems to change a lot but fish was superb, staff was friendly prices were reasonable. Would definitely return."
Dined on 2/27/2014
This is the best Japanese
restaurant that I have visited in in a long time. I plan to come again soon."

It was amazing, the food was so
delicious. And the service terrific. They kept on bringing the food fast and you can tell that everything was fresh."
Dined on 2/8/2014
Otoro Sushi is consistently
excellent with both a wonderful selection of fresh sushi and sushimi as well as Japanese style cooked food. The people are wonderful and service is great at this small (30 person) intimate restaurant. Truly a favorite!!!"

We had dinner here before the
symphony and had an enjoyable experience. Nice selection of fresh fish and sushi, somewhat expensive but expected. Good service. Quiet enough to enjoy conversation. Somewhat tightly packed in, however. Would return."

Don't rush out and swarm them!
This is a neighborhood gem close enough to the Opera House to make a marvelous pre-dinncer spot. Everything was delicious, especially the soft shell crab special and the sushi. You wont be disappointed."

great food and awesome service!
really glad I stopped by this place :)"
Dined on 1/4/2014
The food is quite innovative and I
encourage you to order off the chalk board menu for the best experience. Exciting and interesting combinations, nice sized portions, and the food arrived in a timely manner despite how busy they were...This is a tiny restaurant with very poor waiting space, and on a cold night, it can be chilly when the door is opened. Despite having a reservation, we waited almost 30 minutes for a table for two. Service was very good and we will definitely return."
Dined on 12/14/2013
The food was delicious and
selection was varied. We asked for something that was not on the menu (Chawanmushi), a delectable soup that is not very easily thrown together and they made it!!! It is a small restaurant so reservations are likely a must and you may have to wait a little even then. Thanks O Toro! Great experience!"
Dined on 12/19/2013
This neighborhood sushi/Japanese
tapas bar and restaurant maybe small, but it is big on fresh fish and great service. Melt in your mouth bits of blue fin, tuna toro, hirame, Aji, etc. and the most FABULOUS garlic crab ever (we had a second order). This is a must try if you love sushi and other Japanese favorites. Jimmy handles the front and he moves effortlessly making his customers happy. We loved Otoro. The Lampkins"

I booked Otoro for my birthday
dinner last minute and was expecting a mediocre, chain-type sushi place. Wrong. This cozy joint near Hayes/Civic Center was the best sushi I have had in quite a while! Everything was so fresh. The selection was abundant. Even the shoyu ramen was divine. And the best part? It will not break the bank! From now on, Otoro Sushi will be the only place I visit!"
Dined on 11/4/2013
Otoro is still one of the best
sushi restaurants in San Francisco. The quality of fish is always consistently high. The specials often feature walu, aji, albacore toro, and otoro. The sake menu also features some wonderful bottles. While you do not have the one-on-one sushi chef relationship, you can rest assured that there is someone making sure each and every piece of fish is prepared properly. If you are looking for fresh, properly cut sushi or sashimi along with some Japanese delicacies, Otoro will meet your needs."

We went here with a few colleagues
for a work dinner and it was an awesome experience. Loved the fact that the restaurant was small which allowed for a nice conversation. The food was superb, and the prices - more than fair. Especially lived the spider rolls, the Otoro rolls (wrapped in mango!) Highly recommend this place."

Small (10) tables with sushi bar,
and a bustling vibe, with terrific selection and preparation. Just go chef's choice and enjoy."
Dined on 11/18/2013
We enjoyed excellent sushi, gyoza
and grilled mackerel in this pleasant, lively space. Service was charming and helpful, though a little slow for a pre-opera dinner. We'll definitely be back to try some more adventurous offerings."
Dined on 11/15/2013
Very fresh sushi. Delicious
Albacore toro - we should have ordered more. The chicken heart skewers were fantastic. Service just a tad slow (but no big deal)."
Dined on 11/8/2013
Perfect dinner with a few friends.
Great food - simple, high-quality sushi. Not much more to say -- everyone wants to eat some delicious sushi now and then, and Otoro's got it. Good place, easy seating, great location."
Dined on 10/23/2013
Great food and ambiance. The food
is tasty, delivered quickly and the music is nice and soft. This is a great neighborhood restaurant with very nice decor."
Dined on 10/14/2013
Otoro is far and away one of the
cities best sushi & sake restaurants!"
