Diner Reviews
  • "Staff can be inconsistent and the challenge of getting in sometimes is real (this week they said their phones had been out of order for a week -- sort of odd), but the short, intense menu is intensely good and we keep going back on every visit to SF."

  • "I took a friend here for lunch and while the acoustics are unpleasant and it's hard to hear, the food and service were wonderful. I definitely would recommend this restaurant, but this is a restaurant for a younger demographic due to the noise level. It's really too bad, because I am older and my recommendation would always include that unfortunate design error, when really, the focus should be on the marvelous food and excellent staff."

  • "We just love going there for brunch every week! We look forward to our spring rolls and pho! I like the chicken pho and my husband likes the beef pho. We love the food, service and the ambiance. Such a great place!"

  • "I like this place a lot. The service and food are consistently good. Starting with the friendly greeting by the hostess and continuing with good service throughout the meal. The menu doesn't change much but the food is reliably fresh and good."

  • "Always love the great food and friendly service! Spring Rolls, Chicken Pho and Beef Pho are always great Saturday brunch items to enjoy. "

  • "Tried new menu items and changed things up. Started with the daikon cakes, full of flavor and great presentation. The steak Bavette with chimichurri sauce was so tender, delicious and cooked to perfection. We also had the lemongrass pork dish, came highly recommended by our server... which was out of this world. AMAZING!!! Dominick gave us such amazing recommendations. He always takes such great care of us and makes our dining experience exceptional! "

  • "We wanted to go to The Slanted Door but there were no reservations. They offered other restaurants affiliated with the slanted door, and the menu looked great at Out the Door! We were not disappointed for our 16th anniverary dinner. We had the prawns, asparagus, brown rice and a chocolate dessert. All were taste treats, and my husband thought it was a special meal. The service was excellent. Would recommend highly. "

  • "We loved this place. Service was great- helpful and professional. All the food was so delicious. We especially loved the Papaya salad and clay pot chicken! Wow! "

  • "We love the food and service. We go there every weekend for brunch. The manager always greets us with a friendly smile. Our server/bartender always takes such good care of us. We love the spring rolls, beef pho and chicken pho. Maybe we will try something new next time. "

  • "Amazing food, service and fun atmosphere. A bit loud but cuisine was amazing. We were all blown away by our shared app (Soup Dumpling Potstickers - a must get) entrees and shared desserts. LOVE the wine on tap from small local wineries. All in all can't say enough good things."

  • "Had an amazing meal! Really really delicious - some of the favorites of our table were the daikon cakes, scallops and the peanut butter/chocolate dessert. I love that no matter what day of the week we come or time for that matter - always great service, food, and atmosphere. Always on point and we appreciate all of the hardwork from OTD to deliver that. Had a fabulous evening - a huge thank you!!"

  • "incredibly loud! took family from out of the country we couldn't talk during dinner at all, people at nearby table were so loud the whole place has horrible acoustics"
    Dined on 4/26/2014
  • "We've been to OTD about 5 times, and were very disappointed in the food this visit. The crispy spring rolls were OK, the crab noodles and the chicken salad were mediocre. What's happened to the chef? OTD has turned from a food lover's delight to plain, same old stuff you can get elsewhere, nothing special."

  • "Arrived with reservation and seated immediately on a busy night. Lovely service, wonderful food. The only negative is the noise level which is very loud. Worth the long walk from our hotel in Union Square. Felt like a local."
    Dined on 4/18/2014
  • "OTD serves good Vietnamese (Americanized) food. Plenty of variety. Noise level is too loud. A very conveninent place for lunch. Ambience isn't good enough for a quiet, relaxing dinner."
    Dined on 4/16/2014
  • "Found OTD listing on "Open Table" and after reading the reviews, thought we would try it. We were surprised by the excellent food and the service. Their street signage is almost non-existing, so make sure you have the address. We will certainly return. "

  • "I come here mostly every sunday and every time I do come staff is wonderful. The food is excellent all the time. The manager is so friendly and nice. I always sit up at the bar and the bartender is always pleasant and nice! He is just wonderful. I will be back actually this sunday for Easter."

  • "My partner and I were very excited to come to OTD for date night dinner. But overall, we had a pretty negative experience. We didn't get our entrees until abut 55 minutes after being seated. Furthermore, this didn't seem to be an issue to any of the staff, including our waitress, who never apologized for the delay or even acknowledged it. The noise level was so loud it was it was distracting. My companion and I we were literally SHOUTING at each other, but I still had to ask "WHAT?" every time he said something. The food was...fine. Nothing special, didn't really feel worth the price. Due to the above issues, we passed on dessert and hit up the frozen yogurt place on Fillmore instead."

  • "The food at OTD is very, very good. However, OTD is not a place to linger over the food or have any conversation."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "The food at OTD continues to be fantastic. I love the flavors and freshness - yum. But acoustics certainly were not a consideration when they built this place, MUCH to the detriment of the enjoyment of their guests. This was my first trip to OTD for dinner in years, and now I know why (lunch is a bit less deafening). If anyone in your group is at all sensitive to noise or hard of hearing, I'd have to recommend a pass - would be unfortunate to miss the food, but it would be too unpleasant for them. This is not a place to have an enjoyable dinner where you can talk to your companions. Service remains spotty - very dependent upon your server. Ours was friendly and knowledgeable but a bit slow and inattentive. But oh the food!"

  • "The food, service and ambience are adequate, but all one full step below Slanted Door standards. Frankly, I worry that Mr. Phan has become stretched a bit thin... Nonetheless, the basics are sound, so with some thoughtful attention to managing this restaurant, it could be really an excellent spot in the Fillmore Street zone."

  • "Still creates excellent food, might want to mix up entrees more. Brunch is totally different and you should try it, we were delighted."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "Have dined here numerous times and taken out even more. As always , the food is superb. But I've come to expect that I won't find a wine to my liking and was not surprised this visit. Don't know why- I'm not that hard to please having an appreciation for many varieties and styles."

  • "Great small restaurant that just has awesome food-had the prawns and a few appetizers and it was just awesome"

  • "dining here due to incredible noise level even after moving tables with help of amenable staff. My ears still test adequate but my friend and I could hardly converse.. on the verge of headaches."

  • "Great services, excellent food. Love this place too much."

  • "OTD has never failed me. When Slanted Door is booked, I'll head here or when I don't feel like dealing with too many tourists at the Ferry Building. My faves include: Cellophane noodles with crab, veggie imperial rolls, pork belly appetizer, mung bean dumplings and fried chicken with sriracha butter."

  • "Great food. Salt and Pepper Calamari so good. Hostess was so nice, waiter was great too. Lovely place to get a bit in the neighborhood."

  • "Even though majority of the patrons of this restaurant are not Asian, this restaurant does churn out good Vietnamese food. Prices are higher than your typical Vietnamese restaurant but you also get the ambience and better ingredients. The service was very nice and quality of food is good. The only thing lacking is a full bar - they only offer wine and beer for alcohol."

  • "This is our third time getting together with friends and relatives for Sunday brunch during our visits to the Bay Area. The menu is great. Beignets!!!! French press coffee! Interesting pancakes, french toast, bread pudding, and the usual Vietnamese lunch favorites. I had egg white scramble with kale and mushrooms and sunchokes. So much fun. Wait staff is friendly and informative. We will return."

  • "no place captures the brilliance and freshness of asian inspired cuisine better than these folks. the food is exceptional, the vibe great, the setting lovely. my favorite place for a casual dinner out when in SF. wish it were in boston!!!"

  • "Went for brunch. Small menu which was not overly interesting. Above average food preparation. Very poor service. Shared starter course arrived three minutes before main dishes. Waiteress, who rarely shopwedup, was annoyed that we were not yet ready."

  • "Having eaten at OTD several times in the past I was expecting a satisfying tasty lunch. However, the food was uninspiring: the daikon rice cake was heavy and dense, the noodles, cellophane, rice and egg, were overcooked and oily, and the cauliflower, although seasoned well was undercooked and lacking tastiness."
    Dined on 2/5/2014
  • "The food at OTD is consistently good, I am never disappointed. The food has an asian influence and is meant to be shared. The noise level is pretty loud. The service is usually good, this time it was a little off the mark."

  • "I had brunch there and selected some items that I did not know anything about and was very pleasantly surprised. Everything was just excellent and very tasty. I also enjoyed the way the waitress answered our various questions - knowledgeable and friendly. I am looking forward to my next visit."
