Diner Reviews
  • "Every part of our dinner was outstanding! Noise level was very high."

  • "The restaurant is intimate and a great place for date night. We tried the drink special, a vodka cocktail with infused fruit, the beet salad, the special entree, sea bass with salad, and the rack of lamb with risotto. We had the Meyer lemon pudding cake and blood orange sorbet for dessert. Everything was delicious with tons of flavors. Would definitely go back any time I'm in Santa Cruz."

  • "Another wonderful dinner at Oswald celebrating two birthdays! and lots of options with bar and regular menu. Thanks for the candles!"

  • "Oswald is an old favorite that is losing its touch. Catering now to sports fans, the food is often not seasoned as well as it used to me, menu is repetitive and expensive. The bar and bar menu seems to be the draw now, overflowing into the dining room - which used to be a special meal out. The noise level continues to be a problem in their "new" space. The wait staff continues to be excellent. I just wish the owner/chef didn't seem burned out on cooking carefully"

  • "Friendly atmosphere with attentive service. We were there primarily for the food which was well prepared, presented and delicious. The menu offered a variety of seafood and meat dishes. While our party had fish and a pork chop dish I would love to go back and try some of the other interesting offerings on their menu. The wine menu and mixed drink offerings had something for everyone even alcohol free drinks. It was a bit noisy as tables filled up but that has to do with the physical openness of the restaurant. We plan to go back again, and again, and again. ."

  • "My Bride had the Sea Bass special, and I had the Lamb. Everything was cooked perfectly! The bartender made an excellent Old Fashion, and Martini. This was accompanied by an excellent server who knew when to come by and when to let us enjoy. We will defiantly return to this restaurant."

  • "Please add a semi healthy veg entree. The mushroom bread pudding is good but feels heavy. A pasta dish with fresh vegetables would be way better."

  • "Oswald's is one of the best restaurants in Santa Cruz, which is sorely missing really excellent restaurants. The service was excellent, and they were very accommodating in making substitutions in the entrees that we ordered. They were very good, although my chicken was a little heavy on the salt. We were on a bit of a schedule and they were great in keeping us on time despite a busy Friday night."

  • "Excellent staff, food is always good and very fresh. We go there frequently , it is on the top of our list!!"

  • "Great food, friendly service, bar menu is a deal and the drinks are festive. We love to go see a movie downtown and then time our reservation for right after the show. It makes for a great night out."

  • "Dinner service & ambience were great. We have been several times but this weekend we came and were not impressed. The bread is bland the butter is unsalted yet there is no salt on the table."

  • "I really enjoy coming to this restaurant. the service is great, the food is excellent and they always do a great job. I like getting my food quickly and hot, I usually don't have 2 hour meals, so the service is really prompt and attentive. For appetizers, I had the fried abalone and crab and avocado salad. For salads, we had the butter lettice and the beet salad with feta, both month watering. For our main entree, we had the succulent sea bass and the flavorful rack of lamb. To top it off with the decadent chocolate souflee. I was in heaven."

  • "Exploring Santa Cruz dining after relocating from Chicago area. Happy to find this very good food opportunity. Fine food and good service make a great combination for success at Oswald. Pricey for sparse surroundings but justified, I guess. Give it a try."

  • "Great food & service, but so loud we three could barely carry on a conversation. Makes it hard to want to hang out for a long leisurely dinner, esp. when spending a lot on great food."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "Given that restaurants such as Laili which is just around the corner and Shadowbrook are close, this restaurant seems too expensive for the quality offered... It has great food and a nice ambiance, but you will be better served with even better food at places like Shadowbrook or Laili, which can be cheaper!"

  • "Very good food and service, however, especially on weekends the noise is so loud only by shouting can you carry on a conversation."

  • "We have been driving by for years! What a loss! Tried it on a Sunday evening and everything was great! Our only "complaint" would be the wait for our second round of drinks! We will be back soon!"

  • "Food was cooked to perfection. Lots of interesting appetizers choices made it tough to choose just two. Sea bass was perfectly cooked and paired with an outstanding pickled greens. Lamb was also cooked perfectly and the winter vegetables were great. Good wine and beer selection and very knowledgeable and helpful wait staff. We'll definitely go back."

  • "First visit on valentines day. Prix fixe 3 course menu for $55.00 was reasonable and each dish was delicious and perfectly prepared. Can't wait to return"

  • "My husband had the crab for appetizer - which was really good. I had the mixed green salad - too much dressing, too oily. For dinner we had the brisket and chicken dishes - both very good. Service was excellent. We do not drink so we had water and never had to ask for our glasses to be filled - which is really nice."

  • "20 minutes wait despite reservation is a little bit disappointing, but it was a busy night from the looks of it. Otherwise the food was delicious."

  • "Meat cooked perfectly, gnocchi lite and creamy but greens bitter.Too limited menu. Ambiance nothing special. Nothing special that would bring me back."

  • "French press coffee was Luke warm and weak. Endives salad was good. Ceasar salad chicken had a coating ((crust) not tasty! Will not go back to this. Restaurant"

  • "Food, service impeccable. We went Sunday and it was quite than usual. I feel like I get just the right amount of attention from the wait staff, and something creative and new from the menu. This time beet chips and warm frisee."
    Dined on 2/9/2014
  • "Every bite was so delicious! But they didn't follow through on my "advanced" request to put a candle on the soufflé.... That was a downer since we were celebrating my bf's birthday."

  • "We loved Oswald. Just moved to the area in Sept so still trying out the dining scene. Oswald tops the list so far!! Food was great and our server was excellent. Our son was able to order a burger off of the bar menu which made him happy and saved us money."

  • "We had eaten here before and were looking forward to our return. Our return visit was on a Saturday night and this may have been the reason the room was so loud. Has the bar grown since our last visit? It seemed so. The food and service were excellent. Conversation was almost impossible."

  • "We went here for our four year anniversary. Bar tender was very knowledgeable about different types of scotch The flavors of the food were fantastic. The temperature of my soup wasn't hot enough for me. By the time I was half way done, the soup wasn't warm at all. They'll make you something great to eat no matter what your dietary restrictions/preferences. Which is wonderful for those who are vegan/have allergies."

  • "Last Saturday night was my second time dining at Oswald's and the menu changed a bit but my selection was still so good! All of the food I've tried there is so delicious. Great romantic atmosphere and the drinks are to die for. I'd go for the soufflé alone. YUM"

  • "Food was great. Rack of lamb and trout. Wine list was good although they only had 1 cab by the glass. But the waiter said it was really good. Jason Stephens. 2008. You know, he was right. It was lovely. Best dining experience in a long time. When we're back in Santa Cruz you'll know we'll be dining at Oswalds."

  • "I brought my girlfriend to Oswald's for our 2 year anniversary. I'd never been to this place before, but I had a friend who used to be a chef here and I thought we'd give it a go. Both of our meals were absolutely delicious, well prepared, and had a well thought out presentation. We went on a course-style night, and we had no more than probably 2 minutes of waiting time between courses, once we were finished eating. The hostess was very personable and professional, and had a good knowledge of food and wine. I will definitely be back, once my wallet permits!"

  • "The restaurant from the outside is easy to miss. At the corner of a parking garage you wouldn't expect anything other than a suppy closet, lest a restaurant. When you enter you walk immediately into a contemporary bar spread with frosted accent lights illuminating the spirits and liquors that grace the walls. The place can be very tame, or a zoo. But still, never comes off as pandemonious. The staff is friendly, and the bar tenders pour only the strongest, not watered down drinks. The menu is limited, but thats because it's seasonal and really attempts to bring focus to a few star ingredients. I had the brisket served in a port reduction and it was wonderful."

  • "This was my first time in since they moved to this location. The décor was pleasing and comfortable and the food was very good. Our only complaint was a very salty polenta dish which was cheerfully removed from our bill. We will be back to sample some of the other dishes soon."
