A word from Osteria Via Stato
(OH-STEH-REE-YAH) A casual Italian tavern where people gather to enjoy antipasti with wine, a plate of pasta or an Italian feast, all served with the warmth and hospitality of family. Osteria Via Stato, a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant follows this definition and the Italian tradition of seasonally prepared dishes featuring local ingredients and artisanal producers paired with an all Italian wine list. Osteria Via Stato opens daily at five.
Pizzeria Via Stato located adjacent to Osteria Via Stato is a cozy, Roman-style pizzeria that continues to highlight Executive Chef Digregorio’s passion for market-fresh ingredients. The tavern pizzas have crispy, thin crust with both artisanal and classic toppings. The tavern also features 300 Italian wines, local bottles and draft beers as well as an extensive selection of small plates. Pizzeria Via Stato offers both lunch and dinner

Diner Reviews
  • "The photos around town of the Caprese Salad are SPOT ON! If you don't order that, to start, you're missing out. It was all very yummy."

  • "We love Osteria and have been dining here for years. The food is excellent and the service makes it even better. The waitstaff is always knowlegeable on both the food and wine. This night Terry was our server and he was great. He knew everything about the food and drink. We are usually too full for dessert but the Gelato is homemade and OUTSTANDING. We had blackberry granita and a caramel gelato. Both were excellent."

  • "My wife and I chose to come to Chicago for our honeymoon, and quickly looked up a well rated Italian and wood fired pizza place near our hotel. Osteria Via Stato was one of the first to come up. Unfortunately, we got a bit lost on the way to the restaurant and were late for our reservation, but they made arrangements for a table inside. Overall, the food was simply unbelievable. Everything we ordered tasted lovely! Highlights included the Veal Meatballs, the Grilled Octopus and the thin, thin crust pizzas. So crispy! Would highly recommend to any friend or family member who enjoys Italian!"

  • "A quiet, busy restaurant in the heart of the city near theaters. Friendly attentive service. Remarkably only a single unisex bathroom with one toilet for a large restaurant and bar."

  • "This restaurant, for being downtown on a busy corner, was like walking into a romantic bistro; it was just beautiful and the ambience great. I ordered the Spring Pea Ravioli, my husband the Niman Ranch Short Ribs and our friend ordered the Pappardalle with 3 meat Ragu and all were outstanding, not to mention the bread that came to the table before dinner! My blood orange Bellini hit the spot as well. This was my first time here but I will definitely be back."

  • "Been here many times for dinner both in the Pizzeria and dining room! Food is fabulous and the best crusty hot Italian bread ever! This time we decided to try the dinner for two menu and were very pleased! My only complaint (if you even want to call it that) is that the waiter never asked us if we wanted another drink (we had to stop and ask him twice), there was a very long wait before the main course and you cannot get served pizza on the dining room side. You actually have to eat in the pizzeria and the dining room both in order to be served anything from both menu. A little ridiculous, but the food is never disappointing!"

  • "This restaurant was recommended to us from a friend and what a great tip it was. Everything was great, food and service were fabulous. Will definitely come again. Best Red sauce we have ever had. Highly recommend the Meatballs appetizer. I had the short rib and mushroom risotto and it was to die for. Everyone at our table raved about their meal."

  • "This is one of our favorite Lettuce Entertain You restaurants. Rustic, warm atmosphere - great menu options. They also do a great job with special events (I held my niece's bridal shower there). Not pretentious - the perfect blend of class and casualness. I highly recommend!"

  • "I always enjoy bring a large group here and ordering the Italian Style Dinner. Tons of great food for both vegetarians and omnivores - everyone finds something they love."

  • "The outdoor dining was a perfect choice for our casual dinner. The roasted garlic olive oil dip with bread was proclaimed the best ever by several at the table. Other highlights were the carbonara, short ribs, and white wine sangria. Yum!! Will definitely be returning."

  • "Had a reservation, and when we arrived we spoke to the outside host who said he could seat us outside in 20 min. Decided to have a drink at the bar while we waited, but 40 min later we still had not been sat. When he spoke to the host it was clear we had been forgotten about. He said if we waited "just another moment" they would have a table. 10 more min and still nothing, so we asked to be seated inside. We were brought inside and seated, but right under a dripping air conditioning vent. We asked to be moved and finally sat. Seating drama aside, the food was lackluster, mediocre at best. Overcooked pasta, bland sauces. Decent wine. For GREAT Italian, try Davanti, Quartino, RPM, Centro. No shortage of Italian in River North so skip Osteria."

  • "This is my second visit to Osteria and I will be back again! The food is outstanding and has an updated twist to many classic Italian dishes. Next time I have to try dessert! Compliments to the chef and management of this great spot."

  • "Loved sitting outside and watching all the activity on State St. Good food, good prices, we will be back. As previous reviewers mentioned, the bread is outstanding. But I don't inderstand why you have to choose between the pizza side and the restaurant side -- they are next door, why can't one of us get a pizza? And I have to say my risotto was very salty. Good flavor, but couldn't drink enough water the rest of the night! Another picky comment: why no ice in the water glasses? Reminds me of Europe, in an unfavorable way. And the waitress acted put out when I asked for ice."

  • "Food delicious. They initially messed up my order but were happy to take it back and made a fresh plate very fast."

  • "we ate in the restaurant side and really enjoyed the place. Great food and service. Not too expensive. Will defiantly stop by again when we are in town."

  • "We had the the tasting menu and loved all of the dishes. There was more than enough food and the wine flight provided ample wine with the dinner."

  • "My wife and I would not recommend this place, especially for an anniversary. We got seated next to two tables with kids. We ordered the "Pre-Selected Dinner" and its main ingredient was peas. The salad was by far the best of the unlimited portions. Very disappointed considering what we paid. We have gone to most of the LEYE restaurants and this was the only one that we didn't like."

  • "We liked: roasted garlic comes with bread, the outdoor seating, portion size options, FANTASTIC service (everyone from the hostess to the manager works together) for the vino drinkers I don't think you would be dissappointed with the options (wine list is longer than the menu) What we didn't like: Nothing! **Noise level & ambience ratings are based on sitting outside and did not factor in city noise"

  • "OVS is really three different restaurants: a pizza joint with TVs, a romantic indoor quiet place, and an outdoor venue. All are great! We ate indoors and weren't disappointed. The Caesar salad was delicious with the dressing having that tangy zip that a lot of Caesars lack. The meat balls were very good and our pasta was perfectly cooked. The best part of our night was our server, Angelo. He was knowledgeable, upbeat, and very professional. Upon realizing this, we let him make our menu choices for us and ended up trying some things that we wouldn't have ordered on our own, like a great bottle of chianti and this fig tart. We will be back!"

  • "We have dined at Osteria Via Stato numerous times. While our waiter was friendly and attentive, we felt somewhat rushed. I ordered one of the specials, beef short ribs risotto, and it was a mistake. It had a good flavor, but was so over-salted that I couldn't eat it. My wife was kind enough to share her meal with me. The waiter was understanding when we explained the problem and agreed after tasting the dish back in the kitchen. We weren't charged for the that salty meal, which was appreciated, but not our goal. I just wanted the kitchen to be aware of the problem and had looked forward to a good meal that night. Since there are so many places to dine in Chicago, we will most likely try to find a new favorite place."

  • "Took my wife out to dinner for her birthday with a couple of friends. The food as always was Outstanding. The Chef's special was one of the best meals I have ever had. Wine list was not huge but was great."

  • "We frequently eat at Osteria Via Stato, the one thing that sets them apart is the wonderful crusty italian bread with the olive oil, roasted garlic and balsamic vinegar..could make a whole meal on the bread ,the best..everything is very good but the bread is the best"

  • "A great fresh Faro and Veggie salad, a Chicken sandwich on baguette so perfect it could not be better, and a small slice of chocolate tart so fresh and delicious. A memorable lunch, and not at all expensive."

  • "Loved the food and the service that we had at Osteria Via Stato. Everyone was very attentive. The spicy tomato sauce was just great. They have a wonderful wine list also."

  • "where the people watching added to the experience...every great Italian restaurant starts with great bread and this places did not disappoint. try the roasted caprese and any pizza!"

  • "We eat here almost once a week! They have a really unique menu option, where for $25 you get "the dinner party" option and they bring you a variety of salads and appetizers, then 2 pastas. You can also opt to order an entree with this, for an additional cost, but it's a lot of food if you do. EVERYTHING is so fresh, well seasoned and they use produce and meat from many local vendors. They have the BEST olives in the world, seriously, and serve them with shavings on candied orange peel over top. Great value, wonderful food. And the bread - oh the chewy, crunchy, doughy bread. Hint: take some home for french toast! They also are very accommodating in you have food allergies, offering gluten free pastas and removing dairy from dishes, etc."

  • "You'll start out with amazingly good bread served along with simmered garlic in olive oil. Everything from there will go downhill. The grilled octopus, tasteless, diluted with baby potatoes. The seafood tagliatelle would've been better with Ragu sauce. And the lamb porterhouse, despite the name the size of a mini filet mignon, tasted like salt, not meat. Even the bread pudding with banana was dominated by glazed sugar, which ruins the smooth experience you'd expect from bread pudding. You might as well have asked for hard candy. In general, an expensive and bad restaurant."

  • "My husband and I went to celebrate our anniversary, based on a recommendation that this was a good romantic spot. While our food and our service were both STELLAR, the ambience was not what we'd hoped for. That being said, if you're looking for a good happy hour spot or a place to take a large group, it seems like this should be your first stop! We will come back, though not for a quiet evening."

  • "Really enjoyed wine recommendation --great bread and entrees but most of all our server, Bill, was friendly, experienced and timely. Made the evening enjoyable."

  • "Our party of five enjoyed the Italian Dinner Party family style menu, which affords a taste of several apps, pastas, and entrees. The skate special was divine, and our special request to include the pappardelle with veal sauce was granted: heavenly! Chocolate bar for dessert a must, even if everyone's full beyond repair, as we were. The per-bottle corkage fee was the only turnoff of the night-may as well order off of their wine list."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "Ultra-thin crust pizza with housemade sausage was divine, reminding us of pizza we ate in Rome. (Believe me, that's a huge compliment!) If you like crisp, cracker-thin pizza as a change of pace from the usual thicker Chicago-style pizza, Pizzeria via Stato is for you. The wine list offers a nice variety of all-Italian wines at decent prices. Service was excellent, including the manager who stopped by our table to say hello and came back with homemade chocolate for us to sample. A satisfying dining experience from start to finish. We'll definitely be back."

  • "My boyfriend and I went for dinner and had the best time. The food was absolutely amazing! The spaghetti, the prosciutto, the gelato...those were some of my favorites! Mark is a wonderful and attentive server with amazing recommendations...especially the wine! Great place! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "This place never disappoints. Everything from the bread and garlic to desserts is very satisfying. This is one of my staple restaurants. I appreciate that the servers can speak about the wine on their extensive wine list. "

  • "The fixed price ($40 each) in the more-formal restaurant section was disappointing. Quantities were large but, except for the 2 asparagus preps (quite good), food mediocre. Skate was just a bit odd. Service and ambience were just fine. We have eaten in the separate pizza restaurant several times and enjoyed it. They make some innovative and tasty pizza. Better deal. "

  • "This was not our first time at Osteria Via Stato and we enjoyed ourselves again. Unfortunately, 75% of the restaurant was taken over by private parties, so it took a bit away from the normal ambience of the place. The service and food was still terrific. The veal meatballs are amazing as was the prosciutto and fresh mozzarella. I had the lobster pasta and it was good. My husband had the ricotta pasta and it was good as well. We will return."
