Osteria Via Stato, a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant follows this definition and the Italian tradition of seasonally prepared dishes featuring local ingredients and artisanal producers paired with an all Italian wine list. Osteria Via Stato opens daily at five.

Diner Reviews
  • "We liked: roasted garlic comes with bread, the outdoor seating, portion size options, FANTASTIC service (everyone from the hostess to the manager works together) for the vino drinkers I don't think you would be dissappointed with the options (wine list is longer than the menu) What we didn't like: Nothing! **Noise level & ambience ratings are based on sitting outside and did not factor in city noise"

  • "OVS is really three different restaurants: a pizza joint with TVs, a romantic indoor quiet place, and an outdoor venue. All are great! We ate indoors and weren't disappointed. The Caesar salad was delicious with the dressing having that tangy zip that a lot of Caesars lack. The meat balls were very good and our pasta was perfectly cooked. The best part of our night was our server, Angelo. He was knowledgeable, upbeat, and very professional. Upon realizing this, we let him make our menu choices for us and ended up trying some things that we wouldn't have ordered on our own, like a great bottle of chianti and this fig tart. We will be back!"

  • "We have dined at Osteria Via Stato numerous times. While our waiter was friendly and attentive, we felt somewhat rushed. I ordered one of the specials, beef short ribs risotto, and it was a mistake. It had a good flavor, but was so over-salted that I couldn't eat it. My wife was kind enough to share her meal with me. The waiter was understanding when we explained the problem and agreed after tasting the dish back in the kitchen. We weren't charged for the that salty meal, which was appreciated, but not our goal. I just wanted the kitchen to be aware of the problem and had looked forward to a good meal that night. Since there are so many places to dine in Chicago, we will most likely try to find a new favorite place."

  • "We frequently eat at Osteria Via Stato, the one thing that sets them apart is the wonderful crusty italian bread with the olive oil, roasted garlic and balsamic vinegar..could make a whole meal on the bread ,the best..everything is very good but the bread is the best"

  • "Took my wife out to dinner for her birthday with a couple of friends. The food as always was Outstanding. The Chef's special was one of the best meals I have ever had. Wine list was not huge but was great."

  • "A great fresh Faro and Veggie salad, a Chicken sandwich on baguette so perfect it could not be better, and a small slice of chocolate tart so fresh and delicious. A memorable lunch, and not at all expensive."

  • "Loved the food and the service that we had at Osteria Via Stato. Everyone was very attentive. The spicy tomato sauce was just great. They have a wonderful wine list also."

  • "We eat here almost once a week! They have a really unique menu option, where for $25 you get "the dinner party" option and they bring you a variety of salads and appetizers, then 2 pastas. You can also opt to order an entree with this, for an additional cost, but it's a lot of food if you do. EVERYTHING is so fresh, well seasoned and they use produce and meat from many local vendors. They have the BEST olives in the world, seriously, and serve them with shavings on candied orange peel over top. Great value, wonderful food. And the bread - oh the chewy, crunchy, doughy bread. Hint: take some home for french toast! They also are very accommodating in you have food allergies, offering gluten free pastas and removing dairy from dishes, etc."

  • "where the people watching added to the experience...every great Italian restaurant starts with great bread and this places did not disappoint. try the roasted caprese and any pizza!"

  • "My husband and I went to celebrate our anniversary, based on a recommendation that this was a good romantic spot. While our food and our service were both STELLAR, the ambience was not what we'd hoped for. That being said, if you're looking for a good happy hour spot or a place to take a large group, it seems like this should be your first stop! We will come back, though not for a quiet evening."

  • "You'll start out with amazingly good bread served along with simmered garlic in olive oil. Everything from there will go downhill. The grilled octopus, tasteless, diluted with baby potatoes. The seafood tagliatelle would've been better with Ragu sauce. And the lamb porterhouse, despite the name the size of a mini filet mignon, tasted like salt, not meat. Even the bread pudding with banana was dominated by glazed sugar, which ruins the smooth experience you'd expect from bread pudding. You might as well have asked for hard candy. In general, an expensive and bad restaurant."

  • "Really enjoyed wine recommendation --great bread and entrees but most of all our server, Bill, was friendly, experienced and timely. Made the evening enjoyable."

  • "The food was amazing. I could tell fresh ingredients were used for my delicous pasta dish. Friendly and very efficient service from the wait staff."

  • "Our party of five enjoyed the Italian Dinner Party family style menu, which affords a taste of several apps, pastas, and entrees. The skate special was divine, and our special request to include the pappardelle with veal sauce was granted: heavenly! Chocolate bar for dessert a must, even if everyone's full beyond repair, as we were. The per-bottle corkage fee was the only turnoff of the night-may as well order off of their wine list."

  • "Ultra-thin crust pizza with housemade sausage was divine, reminding us of pizza we ate in Rome. (Believe me, that's a huge compliment!) If you like crisp, cracker-thin pizza as a change of pace from the usual thicker Chicago-style pizza, Pizzeria via Stato is for you. The wine list offers a nice variety of all-Italian wines at decent prices. Service was excellent, including the manager who stopped by our table to say hello and came back with homemade chocolate for us to sample. A satisfying dining experience from start to finish. We'll definitely be back."

  • "This place never disappoints. Everything from the bread and garlic to desserts is very satisfying. This is one of my staple restaurants. I appreciate that the servers can speak about the wine on their extensive wine list. "

  • "My boyfriend and I went for dinner and had the best time. The food was absolutely amazing! The spaghetti, the prosciutto, the gelato...those were some of my favorites! Mark is a wonderful and attentive server with amazing recommendations...especially the wine! Great place! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "The fixed price ($40 each) in the more-formal restaurant section was disappointing. Quantities were large but, except for the 2 asparagus preps (quite good), food mediocre. Skate was just a bit odd. Service and ambience were just fine. We have eaten in the separate pizza restaurant several times and enjoyed it. They make some innovative and tasty pizza. Better deal. "

  • "This was not our first time at Osteria Via Stato and we enjoyed ourselves again. Unfortunately, 75% of the restaurant was taken over by private parties, so it took a bit away from the normal ambience of the place. The service and food was still terrific. The veal meatballs are amazing as was the prosciutto and fresh mozzarella. I had the lobster pasta and it was good. My husband had the ricotta pasta and it was good as well. We will return."

  • "Every item we had here was excellent. The homemade bread with the roasted garlic, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar was a good start. The mini veal meatballs were tasty. The risotto with lamb sausage and basil had a nice creaminess that wasn't overwhelming and had a nice spice to it. And the pappardelle is some of the best I've had, with a delicate sweet sauce to complement the meats. "

  • "I knew this companies restaurants well in the 90's and would talk them up and visit them often when in the Windy City. This was an uninspired experience from go. The dining room was smelly and had no air circulation. The server indifferent and the food average to bad. The risotto was wet porridge overloaded with cheese, the Parmesan onions were good, octopus was bland but tender and the cavatelli was decent but lacking in any distinct flavor. If the Melman kids are now running the show I would say the apple missed falling under the tree by a wide mark. "

  • "if you really like food...if you like supporting local purveyors...if you like unique dishes...if you like wine...then you need to go to Osteria via stato. Go with the family dining experience and with the 'bring me wine' option. Everything was stellar! I am a specialty food rep and have eaten all over...for the price, you cannot go wrong. Their spring menu is fantastic! Seriously, we loved everything that we were brought. And when they ran out of a certain antipasti, they brought you something else but then brought the one that was behind in prep as well! Our waiter, Angelo, was wonderful! He truly loves his job and you can tell! Awesome service...amazing attention to detail! It was one of the best meals we have ever had in Chicago!"

  • "This our first time at the restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had driven by the restaurant numerous times, but never stopped. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Our server was one if the best I have ever had. She was great. The food was very good. The only drawback was that it was noisy, which made it difficult to have conversation. We would definitely go back. "

  • "Lovely dining room. Service was disappointing. Our server started out very intrusive interrupting frequently to take our order. Antipasto plate was slapped down on the table with no explanation of the items - and Dijon mustard????? Pasta dishes were good - overall average dining experience/nothing special. With so many italian gems in Chicago, I'd recommend you look elsewhere."

  • "Loved everything about Osteria Via Stato. The dining room was very comfortable and homey. We had the family style option and loved all the dishes. The bread with roasted garlic was amazing as well. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes and wine list. The whole staff was friendly and made us feel welcome. All five of us left very full and happy. A great place to spend our 31st wedding anniversary! "

  • "Relaxing outdoor dining experience, the thin-crust vegetable pizza was delicious, and our server was very friendly and patient (we were catching up with an old friend so it took a long time for us to stop gabbing and make our choices from the menu)."

  • "I tried this restaurant on a recent trip with my wife to Chicago and we had a really great experience. The food was really tasteful and well prepared (and we went to Italy many times, so we know !) The ambience is really nice too. The only downside was that the entrees were brought to us too soon after we finished our appetizers, but apart from that it was perfect. Definitely a restaurant to try in Chicago ! "

  • "My husband and I were visiting Chicago for our wedding anniversary from Las Vegas. We were only in town 2 nights, and were stumped on where to eat for the second night. I had remembered passing Osteria Via Stato while walking around, so I decided to check people's yelp reviews before making a reservation on Open Table. Needless to say, we were thrilled that we had decided to dine here."
