  • "We liked: roasted garlic comes with bread, the outdoor seating, portion size options, FANTASTIC service (everyone from the hostess to the manager works together) for the vino drinkers I don't think you would be dissappointed with the options (wine list is longer than the menu) What we didn't like: Nothing! **Noise level & ambience ratings are based on sitting outside and did not factor in city noise"

  • "OVS is really three different restaurants: a pizza joint with TVs, a romantic indoor quiet place, and an outdoor venue. All are great! We ate indoors and weren't disappointed. The Caesar salad was delicious with the dressing having that tangy zip that a lot of Caesars lack. The meat balls were very good and our pasta was perfectly cooked. The best part of our night was our server, Angelo. He was knowledgeable, upbeat, and very professional. Upon realizing this, we let him make our menu choices for us and ended up trying some things that we wouldn't have ordered on our own, like a great bottle of chianti and this fig tart. We will be back!"

  • "We have dined at Osteria Via Stato numerous times. While our waiter was friendly and attentive, we felt somewhat rushed. I ordered one of the specials, beef short ribs risotto, and it was a mistake. It had a good flavor, but was so over-salted that I couldn't eat it. My wife was kind enough to share her meal with me. The waiter was understanding when we explained the problem and agreed after tasting the dish back in the kitchen. We weren't charged for the that salty meal, which was appreciated, but not our goal. I just wanted the kitchen to be aware of the problem and had looked forward to a good meal that night. Since there are so many places to dine in Chicago, we will most likely try to find a new favorite place."

  • "We eat here almost once a week! They have a really unique menu option, where for $25 you get "the dinner party" option and they bring you a variety of salads and appetizers, then 2 pastas. You can also opt to order an entree with this, for an additional cost, but it's a lot of food if you do. EVERYTHING is so fresh, well seasoned and they use produce and meat from many local vendors. They have the BEST olives in the world, seriously, and serve them with shavings on candied orange peel over top. Great value, wonderful food. And the bread - oh the chewy, crunchy, doughy bread. Hint: take some home for french toast! They also are very accommodating in you have food allergies, offering gluten free pastas and removing dairy from dishes, etc."

While our food and our service were both STELLAR, the ambience was not what we'd hoped for. That being said, if you're looking for a good happy hour spot or a place to take a large group, it seems like this should be your first stop! We will come back, though not for a quiet evening."

  • "You'll start out with amazingly good bread served along with simmered garlic in olive oil. Everything from there will go downhill. The grilled octopus, tasteless, diluted with baby potatoes. The seafood tagliatelle would've been better with Ragu sauce. And the lamb porterhouse, despite the name the size of a mini filet mignon, tasted like salt, not meat. Even the bread pudding with banana was dominated by glazed sugar, which ruins the smooth experience you'd expect from bread pudding. You might as well have asked for hard candy. In general, an expensive and bad restaurant."

Chocolate bar for dessert a must, even if everyone's full beyond repair, as we were. The per-bottle corkage fee was the only turnoff of the night-may as well order off of their wine list."

If you like crisp, cracker-thin pizza as a change of pace from the usual thicker Chicago-style pizza, Pizzeria via Stato is for you. The wine list offers a nice variety of all-Italian wines at decent prices. Service was excellent, including the manager who stopped by our table to say hello and came back with homemade chocolate for us to sample. A satisfying dining experience from start to finish. Unfortunately, 75% of the restaurant was taken over by private parties, so it took a bit away from the normal ambience of the place. The service and food was still terrific. The veal meatballs are amazing as was the prosciutto and fresh mozzarella. I had the lobster pasta and it was good. My husband had the ricotta pasta and it was good as well. We will return."

  • "I knew this companies restaurants well in the 90's and would talk them up and visit them often when in the Windy City. This was an uninspired experience from go. The dining room was smelly and had no air circulation. The server indifferent and the food average to bad. The risotto was wet porridge overloaded with cheese, the Parmesan onions were good, octopus was bland but tender and the cavatelli was decent but lacking in any distinct flavor. If the Melman kids are now running the show I would say the apple missed falling under the tree by a wide mark. "

Go with the family dining experience and with the 'bring me wine' option. Everything was stellar! I am a specialty food rep and have eaten all over...for the price, you cannot go wrong. Their spring menu is fantastic! Seriously, we loved everything that we were brought. And when they ran out of a certain antipasti, they brought you something else but then brought the one that was behind in prep as well! Our waiter, Angelo, was wonderful! He truly loves his job and you can tell! Awesome service...amazing attention to detail! It was one of the best meals we have ever had in Chicago!"

Our server was one if the best I have ever had. She was great. The food was very good. The only drawback was that it was noisy, which made it difficult to have conversation. Antipasto plate was slapped down on the table with no explanation of the items - and Dijon mustard????? Pasta dishes were good - overall average dining experience/nothing special.
