We were in Chicago for a conference so we can only report one meal. Wonderful crusty bread was brought to the table along with carmelized garlic in oil. Excellent! Meatball appetizer was very good. Short rib was great but my husband's pasta was very dry- not so good. There is a prix fixe available but we weren't interested. We did take advantage of a wine flight. There were 2 offered- both 1 white and 2 reds. One was $25, other was $50. We did the $25. We enjoyed the first two and really disliked the last. There was a convention in town (reportedly 100,000 attendees) at the same time. I can't help but think this affected the restaurant scene.

We sat inside and there was a private party in their private room and it did get very loud with the dance music they were playing. Other than that the food was outstanding and I would go again regardless. If you want a quiet spot this might not be it.

The food is delicious here! Would definitely go again and would absolutely recommend it! My friend and I shared 3 dishes (spinach ravioli in brown butter sauce, penne pasta with red sauce and chicken, and my personal fave the gnocchi). All three were so good! The ravioli portion was a little small compared to the other dishes. The gnocchi was so delicious. Creamy and light and tasted divine! We also has the chocolate tart. Very rich, perfect to share! The Italian cosmos were refreshing and citrus-y and a perfect complement to a wonderful birthday meal! Perfect ambience for a romantic meal! Next time I'm taking my honey!!

For the price, this restaurant is better than most in Chicago. The bread with tasty garlic and olive oil for dipping made a great beginning to our meal. The artichoke appetizer was delicious and topped with the most perfectly cooked sunny-side up egg I've ever had. The beet salad was fantastic, as were our two entrees-risotta with lamb sausage and spinach ravioli in butter. Kudos to the bartender for superb Manhattens with tart cherries rather than the old tired maraschinos. And the gelato for dessert was a perfect ending to an consistently fabulous meal. It's a small matter, but we appreciated the choice of sparkling vs. non-sparkling water, which was replenished frequently. The service was affable and efficient. Great job by all!

I am so glad we made reservations to go here for dinner. I have walked past this place numerous times. The ambience was very nice and the food was fantastic. The veal meatballs were the best I have ever tasted. The penne pasta that my wife had was wonderful, but my short rib risotto was by far the best.

This was the best food we had during our whole trip to Chicago. Everything was outstanding and fresh and made with excellence. The wine was nice also. The gnocchi was great, highly recommend. My only complaint was the bread pudding which was very good but super tiny; I mean like a silver-dollar pancake, definitely about 1.5 inches across. No excuse for that. That was just ridiculous. But it was still very good. Highly recommend.

was our first time dining there, as we were looking for a new place to celebrate our anniversary dinner. Was initially concerned as we went at 645 on a Saturday night, and the place was not crowded. However we were pleasantly surprised. We had everything on the menu, appetizers, salads, pasta, entree and dessert. The food quality was top notch. Was spot on on everything we ordered. The restaurant did fill up by the time we left at 845 or so. Definitely will go back.

We love Osteria and have been dining here for years. The food is excellent and the service makes it even better. The waitstaff is always knowlegeable on both the food and wine. This night Terry was our server and he was great. He knew everything about the food and drink. We are usually too full for dessert but the Gelato is homemade and OUTSTANDING. We had blackberry granita and a caramel gelato. Both were excellent.

My wife and I chose to come to Chicago for our honeymoon, and quickly looked up a well rated Italian and wood fired pizza place near our hotel. Osteria Via Stato was one of the first to come up. Unfortunately, we got a bit lost on the way to the restaurant and were late for our reservation, but they made arrangements for a table inside. Overall, the food was simply unbelievable. Everything we ordered tasted lovely! Highlights included the Veal Meatballs, the Grilled Octopus and the thin, thin crust pizzas. So crispy! Would highly recommend to any friend or family member who enjoys Italian!

This restaurant, for being downtown on a busy corner, was like walking into a romantic bistro; it was just beautiful and the ambience great. I ordered the Spring Pea Ravioli, my husband the Niman Ranch Short Ribs and our friend ordered the Pappardalle with 3 meat Ragu and all were outstanding, not to mention the bread that came to the table before dinner! My blood orange Bellini hit the spot as well. This was my first time here but I will definitely be back.

Been here many times for dinner both in the Pizzeria and dining room! Food is fabulous and the best crusty hot Italian bread ever! This time we decided to try the dinner for two menu and were very pleased! My only complaint (if you even want to call it that) is that the waiter never asked us if we wanted another drink (we had to stop and ask him twice), there was a very long wait before the main course and you cannot get served pizza on the dining room side. You actually have to eat in the pizzeria and the dining room both in order to be served anything from both menu. A little ridiculous, but the food is never disappointing!

Had a reservation, and when we arrived we spoke to the outside host who said he could seat us outside in 20 min. Decided to have a drink at the bar while we waited, but 40 min later we still had not been sat. When he spoke to the host it was clear we had been forgotten about. He said if we waited "just another moment" they would have a table. 10 more min and still nothing, so we asked to be seated inside. We were brought inside and seated, but right under a dripping air conditioning vent. We asked to be moved and finally sat. Seating drama aside, the food was lackluster, mediocre at best. Overcooked pasta, bland sauces. Decent wine. For GREAT Italian, try Davanti, Quartino, RPM, Centro. No shortage of Italian in River North so skip Osteria.

Loved sitting outside and watching all the activity on State St. Good food, good prices, we will be back. As previous reviewers mentioned, the bread is outstanding. But I don't inderstand why you have to choose between the pizza side and the restaurant side -- they are next door, why can't one of us get a pizza? And I have to say my risotto was very salty. Good flavor, but couldn't drink enough water the rest of the night! Another picky comment: why no ice in the water glasses? Reminds me of Europe, in an unfavorable way. And the waitress acted put out when I asked for ice.

OVS is really three different restaurants: a pizza joint with TVs, a romantic indoor quiet place, and an outdoor venue. All are great! We ate indoors and weren't disappointed. The Caesar salad was delicious with the dressing having that tangy zip that a lot of Caesars lack. The meat balls were very good and our pasta was perfectly cooked. The best part of our night was our server, Angelo. He was knowledgeable, upbeat, and very professional. Upon realizing this, we let him make our menu choices for us and ended up trying some things that we wouldn't have ordered on our own, like a great bottle of chianti and this fig tart. We will be back!

We have dined at Osteria Via Stato numerous times. While our waiter was friendly and attentive, we felt somewhat rushed. I ordered one of the specials, beef short ribs risotto, and it was a mistake. It had a good flavor, but was so over-salted that I couldn't eat it. My wife was kind enough to share her meal with me. The waiter was understanding when we explained the problem and agreed after tasting the dish back in the kitchen. We weren't charged for the that salty meal, which was appreciated, but not our goal. I just wanted the kitchen to be aware of the problem and had looked forward to a good meal that night. Since there are so many places to dine in Chicago, we will most likely try to find a new favorite place.

We eat here almost once a week! They have a really unique menu option, where for $25 you get "the dinner party" option and they bring you a variety of salads and appetizers, then 2 pastas. You can also opt to order an entree with this, for an additional cost, but it's a lot of food if you do. EVERYTHING is so fresh, well seasoned and they use produce and meat from many local vendors. They have the BEST olives in the world, seriously, and serve them with shavings on candied orange peel over top. Great value, wonderful food. And the bread - oh the chewy, crunchy, doughy bread. Hint: take some home for french toast! They also are very accommodating in you have food allergies, offering gluten free pastas and removing dairy from dishes, etc.
