A word from Osteria Mazzantini
Allow us to introduce you to Osteria Mazzantini, the Galleria area’s newest restaurant from John Sheely, executive chef/owner of award-winning Mockingbird Bistro Wine Bar. Located in the heart of Post Oak Blvd., Osteria Mazzantini marries Old World with the New World – classic Italian dishes made with time-honored tradition in a contemporary osteria setting.

Fresh, handmade pastas, hand-tossed pizzas, housemade salumi, imported cheeses and the best local produce – this is what diners will find on the Mazzantini menu. And Mazzantini’s hand-crafted cocktails, award-winning wine list – which was just named one of the top 10 wine lists in Houston by Houston Press – and polished service are the perfect complement to the food.

Diner Reviews
  • "Upon learning of their imminent closing, we headed out to see if we could get a bite before that happened. We were happy to hear they were going to stay open and hopefully they continue to enhance their meals. We enjoyed our pre-dinner drinks tremendously, my husband loves a great Pisco Sour and they did not disappoint. The service was attentive and they provided a comparable wine when our choice was not available. Overall the experience was good, but it needs a more livelier ambience. The meal was fine and well prepared, nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps a revamp of the menu might make it stand out a bit more. Lovely, not lively."

  • "We have been to Osteria Mazzantini a few times before this past Saturday night, July, 5, 2014. The restaurant was supposed to close for good after July 5th, but I heard that things have change and it will continue in operation. The food is good and imaginatively prepared. The great disappointment was our waiter's attempt to charge us for a drink we did not order. At first I attributed this mis-charge to a mistake. But when my wife brought it to the waiter's attention, she said he acted more like someone who got caught then someone who made a mistake. Perhaps their stressed financial state has led to desperate measures."

  • "Our experience at Mazzantini was very disappointing....The first things we ordered were not available and the first bottle of wine was bad. Not a good way to begin! the food was so so. I honestly cannot find anything to recommend this restaurant."

  • "Brussel sprouts were delicious Ordered the chicken but way too salty!!!"

  • "My daughter and I chose Mazzantini for our first Houston dinner following relocation to the area. New Yorkers that we are, we may have harbored some snobby ideas about what we'd find. We were blown away! Everything from excellent and imaginative (not silly) cocktails (Campari/Proseco spritzer,) fabulous wines by the glass, appetizers (burata w heirloom tomatoes) salad with fried anchovies, and a vegetable risotto that made our taste buds stand up and cheer! The waiter was efficient and friendly. The decor warm and sophisticated. Eating outdoors in this city has its own vagaries (heat, humidity, car noise) but lots of people enjoyed this great restaurant al fresco. We'll be back!"

  • "My husband and I selected Osteria Mazzantini to celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary and it was everything we expected. The ambience was great. We had an opening and closing treat from the chef - an appetizer and a glass of wine with our dessert! The snapper was great - served whole for us to pull the meat off of the bones. The waitstaff was attentive, non-intrusive and polite. Also, the hostess gave us some home made cookies as we departed."

  • "The noise level was quiet because we had dinner oustide, and it was perfect for us. Inside the noise was very awful."

  • "Chef Sheely put together a great tasting menu. Every dish was as great as the previous one. The brown butter ravioli was absolutely heavenly! Thank you, team Mazzantini for a fantastic Father's Day outing!"

  • "We dined in the side room, still unbelievably loud. The food is consistently great. Wine list is interesting ans enjoy the variety of wines offered by the glass. Service was perfect, always there when we needed him, but not hovering. But the noise level, please do something about it. Every time we have been, our lasting impression is the noise level. It keeps us from going back."

  • "It was to loud for my taste. The food and service was great but I would hesitate going back only because of the noise level."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "They were very accommodating, voluntarily reducing the cost of the wine they substituted for the one we sent back"

  • "I don't understand what the big fuss is about-- the menu is very limited, prices are high. Food is medium, service more of an Olive Garden than of an exclusive restaurant. Go figure."

  • "Fabulous dinner - marvellous menu - the ravioli were spectacular."

  • "My congratulations! Everything about your restaurant is very good save one thing: it is really noisy. it is hard to have a conversation at the dinner table because you cannot hear the person across the table from you unless they raise their voice considerably. I would urge you to put some carpeting on the floor and hang a few drapes in the room to absorb some of the vibrations from the high voices.."

  • "Our dining experience with a group of 10 was just terrific, as were my two previous experiences, once just me and hubby, and once just me. Every time, the service was understated but just right. For two people, sharing a antipasti and a primi (primus?), followed by individual secundi was nearly too much food, but every bite was well worth it. The sommelier offers great insights into the very nice wine list. Get the Budini for dessert. "

  • "Food was adventurous yet uninspired. Wine pairing by wait staff was a mismatch. Food portions were all super-sized. You wouldn't know this restaurant was from the Mockingbird group."

  • "Our son was in town from Midland and wanted to go out for a nice dinner. We are fans of Mockingbird Bistro so we decided to give this a try. Yummy food, excellent service. Loved the attention and will definetly go back. A bit pricey for us as a weekly place but will do for a special occassion. Good job!"

  • "The food was outstanding but the service changed our experience. They have an extensive wine list so the waiter attempted to help us but instead of bringing us tastings he brought us glasses of wine he thought we would like and then did not return for 20 minutes. The wait time between the time we sat down and received a drink was about 30 minutes. We then sat and waited another 20 minutes for a menu. Once we ordered the food came out very quickly but the first impression needs improvement. Still a great restaurant for Italian food they just have some things to work out. "

  • "I have eaten here several times: some really strong dishes and some not so much. The menu changed a little - it was missing some items that I previously liked a lot."

  • "We so enjoyed our entire evening, Ana our waitress was on target with with her timing of service and recommendations. She clearly enjoys ensuring her customers are very satisfied. My husband ordered the Pork sausage and lentil appetizer and I had the bone marrow. Both were very good...the bone marrow was one of the best I have ever had. My husbands halibut with tomato jam combination on top of Brussels sprouts was divine and perfectly cooked as was my pork chop with red cabbage. You would think it would be tough to marry a bottle of wine with these various flavors all over the map but sommelier Samantha hit it spot on recommending the Donna Elena Barbera d'Alba. We will definitely be returning."

  • "We are conditioned to expect certain food items on menus of Italian, Mexican, and other ethnic restaurants. Mazzantini's took us a bit out of our comfort zone, offering interesting-sounding, but unfamiliar Italian food items; even after reading the descriptions, we weren't sure what things would look like when they arrived. You have to be in the mood to explore a bit. That said, the food was delicious — beautifully prepared and presented — and the service was excellent — timely, professional, and pleasant. We arrived early, when things were fairly quiet, and were handled very nicely during our short wait; by the time we left, the restaurant was nearly filled and energetic — i.e., close to noisy. We enjoyed our dinner and will return."

  • "I found the ambiance rather boring with all the beige and browns, and it was very noisy to the point we had to yell to communicate with each other - and we were just two sitting next to each other. The food ( ragu pasta) was average, certainly not deserving $26. However the desert (zeppole) was excellent it made up for the rest and so was the wine. I would like to come back to sit outdoors as the patio looks nice and the arugula prosciutto pizza looks promising."

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria Mazzantini (OM). We ate in the main dining room and while crowded, it wasn't noisy as I have seen mentioned in other comments. We did sit in a corner - perhaps that's the perfect spot to request? We really enjoyed the meatballs and the quail risotto. While you might think you would need a different wine for each course, Samantha (the best sommelier in Houston - no doubt), found one perfect wine to go with both courses. And other restaurants should take note, she has fabulous wines which do NOT cost a fortune. Dessert was a light lemoncetta - perfect way to end the meal. Service was excellent - Matthew was a pleasure. Can't wait for our next trip to OM."

  • "With only six months under its belt, I anticipate great things in the future from OM. Osso Bucco special was terrific. The wine list is one of the most interesting and engaging I've seen. Many kudos to the Somm on a terrific program."

  • "I was really disappointed with the price increases on the menu. When they opened before Xmas the burger at lunch was $10. 2 months later it's $18!! There is no glass of wine under $14. I wont be coming back."

  • "This restaurant is unique in that it is suited for a romantic outing, a special occasion like a birthday, or a group outing. And It's just as good a place for lunch as it is for dinner."

  • "We stopped in for lunch at Osteria Mazzantini and ordered a prosciutto/arugula pizza. The crust was thin and crispy, just the way I like it and the toppings were to right amount. It was hot when it came out and the wine suggestion (ripossa) went perfectly with it. The service at the bar (TJ) was very helpful and prompt. Others in the bar were also very happy."

  • "The menu was inspiring. Not your typical American Italian food. We were very well tended to. The bartender even came over to make sure the drinks were right. The atmosphere was great and although we didn't dine outside, the outside guests appeared to be enjoying their atmosphere as well. I would highly recommend!"

  • "Somewhat of an unpleasant experience. Arrived early for a 7pm reservation for 6 guests. All met at the bar and ordered cocktails. Great cocktails and service at the bar. About half way through the cocktails the hostess said she needed to seat us due to another reservation at that table at 9:15.” It is now maybe 7:10. We thought that it was a bit odd but we took our seats. From that point on we were constantly rushed. We ordered appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts, finishing desserts right at 9. Food was fair but not great. Before we could sign the bill, the hostess was asking us for our valet tickets. There are many great restaurants in Houston and we frequent some of the best, we will not visit this restaurant again."

  • "The restaurant was wonderful. The food was a bit too FANCY for our tastes. The foodies in Houston would LOVE this place. The service was A+."

  • "Have loved mockingbird bistro for years, and happy to have Osteria even closer. There are still a few details to work out. For example, we had a very attentive excellent server, but she felt an obligation to mention and describe every item on the menu. Went on too long, but she was great. There were other minor things, too. These details will no doubt be worked out, and this place will get to its full potential. It's all there. Go, you will like it."
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "I heard this place was opened by the Mockingbird people and while I was dining at Mazzantini, it made me miss Mockingbird Bistro which has a much nicer atmosphere. It's expensive and aimed at the yuppies who work and live in the Galkeria/River Oaks area. I like that they offer 2 sizes of their entrees because the salads and appetizers are substantial and if you're not a big eater, the smaller entree portions are perfect. Everything was exquisitely prepared and tasted very fresh. Extensive wine list with some good choices by the bottle but the wines by the glass are over priced or under poured. We sat in the "private dining area" to be in a quieter area but it was still close to the bar which was pretty noisy with some happy hour people."
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "The happy hour specials are great, and the outdoor patio looked enticing, but we were completely unimpressed with the food. Everything we ordered tasted like it had been soaked in butter and salt. I couldn't even eat the bed of lentils under my scallops, because it tasted like I was eating a bowl of salt. You could hardly taste the actual food that was behind it. For a restaurant that received such rave reviews by the press, I expected more."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "I have been here about 3 or 4 times in 2 months. The happy hour bar menu is great. The homemade bread is fab, the bucatni is the best pasta I have ever had and the mussels were amaze. Highly recommend."

  • "They presented the food well and tried hard. But the menu was very limiting. I was off to a bad start there when my Gin and Tonic came out looking like someone had spilled something into it. And it tasted horrible. They said they make their own Tonic. If that is the case, they need to throw it out and go to the canned variety. I can usually find something to eat at an Italian restaurant even though, admittedly, I am not one to experiment too much. But here it was nearly impossible for me to order. They did try hard to create for me, and my companions did enjoy their meals (But no one could drink that G & T.) A foodie would probalby like this place."

  • "We dine out a lot, and Osteria Mazzantini has become our favorite restaurant in Houston. The ambiance is elegant and fun, the service is excellent, and the food is consistently delicious. A special highlight is the exciting and well-thought-out wine list by sommelier Samantha Porter. If you're having trouble picking a wine, just put yourself in her capable hands and she will exceed your expectations. John Sheely's rustic Italian cuisine is creative and satisfying. Don't miss the outstanding starters - our favorites include the cotechino, polpette, mussels, and funghi with polenta."
