A word from Osteria Mazzantini
Allow us to introduce you to Osteria Mazzantini, the Galleria area’s newest restaurant from John Sheely, executive chef/owner of award-winning Mockingbird Bistro Wine Bar. Located in the heart of Post Oak Blvd., Osteria Mazzantini marries Old World with the New World – classic Italian dishes made with time-honored tradition in a contemporary osteria setting.

Fresh, handmade pastas, hand-tossed pizzas, housemade salumi, imported cheeses and the best local produce – this is what diners will find on the Mazzantini menu. And Mazzantini’s hand-crafted cocktails, award-winning wine list – which was just named one of the top 10 wine lists in Houston by Houston Press – and polished service are the perfect complement to the food.

Love this place. Brought girlfriends for lunch (starter and main for special price) and everything was delicious. The scallop crudo is delicate. The lamb meatballs are superb. The squid ink pasta, kale and sweetbread ravioli and fish entree were all delish. All seasone perfectly. Everyone agreed to go again.

Excellent food! The tomatoes that are used have the most delectable flavor! The food and service were outstanding! Nice variety of wine. We were there around 5:30 on a Wednesday evening and there was an after work crowd but not to noisy. Will definitely come back!

I was extremely disappointed with Osteria. The service was really slow. We got our appetizers before our drinks. The food quality was sub-bar. I was expecting more from Chef John. The fish did not have any seasoning on it at all. The scallops were ok. The dessert was the highlight of the evening. I will never be back....

Went with 4 other girlfriends which I know can be annoying because we are constantly chatting instead of listening to the specials, etc., one was 45 min. late and, of course, we want to split the check! Our server was awesome throughout, accommodating everything and bringing over the sommelier without my even asking. We also wanted to eat tapas-style, sharing several dishes. The one who was late asked for more bread/tomatoes with the Burrata. He recommended some lovely things like the pate to start and the scallops as an entrée. Wasn't a problem that two of us lingered, drinking our wine, until almost midnight. I am not always a fan of Italian wine as it can be so tannic, but the one picked was delicious. All the food was lovely.

We tried Osteria Mazzantini during Houston Restaurant Weeks. My husband loved his starter and entree, while I felt my food was average. Portions were very small, perhaps reduced to accommodate the fixed HRW prices?

Great lunch. The only strange thing was an ingredient was left off my companions plate. Instead of taking her plate back to correctly compose it, they brought her a bowl of the missing ingredient. Odd. Otherwise the food and service were good.

We were 7 of us and we really never figured out who our waiter was. One person explained the specials, another took the drink order and the told it to another waiter who wrote it down wrong. another waiter took our food order and another waiter gave us our bill. The staff nearly falls over themselves trying to beat you to the bathroom door to open it for you. I don't really need that much attention being drawn to me when I am using the bathroom. Also the water boy should be told to just refill the tap water without interrupting the conversation by asking each individual if they want more water. Great food, but the service model is not for me.

Great location but..., relatively uninspired menu, VERY noisy dining room, and expensive wine and drinks.... Needs some time to work out the kinks. Waitstaff was intrusive and interrupted conversations frequently (waiter was still in training). Everyone here is very courteous and eager to please and to fix whatever problem existed with the experience, but it's not up to Sheely's other bistro's (Mockingbird) standard.

Although the food was excellent, neither my date or I felt like we would be coming back. Because the restaurant is long and narrow with standard ceiling, it got so loud that we could hardly talk and we were in the back. Neither of us were especially enamored with the ambience.

We have been to Osteria Mazzantini a few times before this past Saturday night, July, 5, 2014. The restaurant was supposed to close for good after July 5th, but I heard that things have change and it will continue in operation. The food is good and imaginatively prepared. The great disappointment was our waiter's attempt to charge us for a drink we did not order. At first I attributed this mis-charge to a mistake. But when my wife brought it to the waiter's attention, she said he acted more like someone who got caught then someone who made a mistake. Perhaps their stressed financial state has led to desperate measures.

Upon learning of their imminent closing, we headed out to see if we could get a bite before that happened. We were happy to hear they were going to stay open and hopefully they continue to enhance their meals. We enjoyed our pre-dinner drinks tremendously, my husband loves a great Pisco Sour and they did not disappoint. The service was attentive and they provided a comparable wine when our choice was not available. Overall the experience was good, but it needs a more livelier ambience. The meal was fine and well prepared, nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps a revamp of the menu might make it stand out a bit more. Lovely, not lively.

My daughter and I chose Mazzantini for our first Houston dinner following relocation to the area. New Yorkers that we are, we may have harbored some snobby ideas about what we'd find. We were blown away! Everything from excellent and imaginative (not silly) cocktails (Campari/Proseco spritzer,) fabulous wines by the glass, appetizers (burata w heirloom tomatoes) salad with fried anchovies, and a vegetable risotto that made our taste buds stand up and cheer! The waiter was efficient and friendly. The decor warm and sophisticated. Eating outdoors in this city has its own vagaries (heat, humidity, car noise) but lots of people enjoyed this great restaurant al fresco. We'll be back!

My husband and I selected Osteria Mazzantini to celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary and it was everything we expected. The ambience was great. We had an opening and closing treat from the chef - an appetizer and a glass of wine with our dessert! The snapper was great - served whole for us to pull the meat off of the bones. The waitstaff was attentive, non-intrusive and polite. Also, the hostess gave us some home made cookies as we departed.
