A word from Osteria Il Paiolo
Many native Italians attempt to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the states, but only few succeed. Alex Palumbo, founder, owner, Executive chef, Manager and at times Waiter, is one of those few. Hailing from the mountainous region of Piemonte, Alex serves a menu focused on Northern Italian cuisine featuring grass fed meats, homemade pastas, and fresh hand picked fish from the market like whole oven roasted branzino.

In it's rustic atmosphere Alex keeps the Osteria intimate, friendly and fun but takes your dining experience seriously providing white table clothes and seasoned waiters.

Hang at the bar after work for a pasta and a glass of wine for under $25. Or, indulge in the full menu. Either way Alex aims to keep it real by providing a low key, fun-loving (like him) but serious (also like him) place to have exceptional food.

Enjoy many nightly specials including the occasional black truffle treat!

  • The service was fantastic.

The service was fantastic. Incredible reminiscent of my time spent in Italy with a knowledgable and friendly staff. It was on the quieter side on a winter Wednesday night but I'm sure they have more busy nights during the weekends and summer. While our entrees were delicious the appetizer of prosciutto and burrata was other-worldly.

Our party of seven were quickly and efficiently seated and the helpful waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. The noise level made it impossible to hear the people across the table. The drink prices, such as $16 for a shot of Scotch, were painfully expensive. The kitchen let us down, the spaghetti with clams being small, short on clams, dry and devoid of the briny and garlicky character of a good linguine with vongole. The polenta with wild boar ragu was third-rate, and the hen needed some kind of sauce or gravy to bring it to life. The entire dining process took too long and the waitstaff, oftentimes, were missing in action. At a cost of over $500 for seven, the experience should have been much more memorable.

Gave this spot a chance on account it was in the neighborhood, looked good, and had great reviews. I was not impressed though. I've had way better tasting food for cheaper. Next time I want italian food I guess I have to go to bay ridge, williamsburg didn't cut it.

The food was really disappointing. The pasta was overcooked and then hard as it must have been sitting under a heat lamp. The fish was totally bland. We were a party of five and were all disappointed with the experience.

We returned after a while away. This place used to be packed, this night it was half empty. We ordered some drinks and wine. Ok. We ordered one appetizer. OK We ordered two different pasta dishes. Really bad. The waiter (the only that stays from the old time) was so kind and did not charge for the pasta. I felt so bad since I was willing to return.

This restaurant was very pretty. However, the service was uneven, appetizer took half an hour to arrive only to be followed by main course a few minutes later. Very pricey for mediocre food. My entree was luke warm. Ordered rack of lamb and meat was chewy. I would not recommend this restaurant. ey

Not our first time to eat here. Food was good but surprised to see only 4 tables of customers (out of maybe 30) on a Saturday night at 6:30 PM. Looks like it's no longer in with the "in crowd" Prices also seem to have risen a little as well. $14 for a tomato and mozzarella appetizer was pricey. Waiters seemed a little snobbish (or bored?)

Great restaurant nestled in the hipster section of Williamsburg. Food was exceptional, service was excellent. Weds night is a nice quiet time in Osteria. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere in stark contrast to their large and loud neighbor down the street. The fresh bread straight out of the oven was outstanding. No shame asking for a second helping because it was so good. Excellent sausage and brocolli rabe appetizer - freshest sausae ever in NYC. Duck l'orange was exceptional and the parpadelle & peas in a light creamy sauce with sausage was superb. The portion was on the small side for the price, but again, the final product was exceptional. Looking forward to returning here again soon.

I took my parents there for their anniversary dinner. My father is Sicilian so I was a little apprehensive about bringing him here. But they loved it. The food was wonderful and beautifully plated We started out sharing a few appetizers, an outstanding octopus dish, some stuffed shrimp and a deliciously toasted brucchetta. We then had some wonderful fish and pasta courses. Overall the food was excellent no complaints. We came in a bit early (parents after all) the restaurant had a few tables with families and some jazz that started around 7 which I really enjoyed. The only dissapointment was the espresso, which was weak and watery but that's par for the course with push button machines. We will defintely be returning.

We've been going there for quite some time now and the food is always dependably delicious, service is fantastic, and consistently phenominal which is not always the case with the restaurants in the area. We've been there for all different kinds of meals, both special occassions and for regular weekend as well as week night dinners and brunches and they never fail us. The wait staff is so friendly - can't recommend this place enough. The best part is its never too crowded and roomy when we go - even on a busy special occassion/holiday night, it's not over packed like some of the other restaurants that it is still quite enjoyable dining experience. Love this place.

Our waiter was rude to my Mother. When she asked if she could add shrimp to the Florentine omelet he replied in a condescending tone, "madame, we do not alter our dishes. These are traditional Italian dishes." That's fine if the Chef doesn't want to alter, but the way he said it was yucky. Then he came back said, "I think I misunderstood, I can change the bla bla for you...didn't make sense as to why he could change one egg dish and not the other. Seemed like a poor attempt at service recovery. He screwed up her order anyway...food was mediocre and all we had were omelets, nothing complicated.

My family of 7 adults 2 kids & 1 infant celebrated my moms birthday at osteria il Palio Saturday night. The food was delicious &!the service excellent. They served the kids right away & there were enough choices for my gluten free sister which can be hard to find in an Italian resturant. Love the burata super creamy but not too heavy & the homemade pasta with fresh truffle shaved at the table. I highly recommend this resturant for big & small groups. The only thing u should be aware is its on the noisy side so don't expect quiet I intimate.

After reading the reviews I had high hopes for this place, FAIL. The service was great and when an Italian restaurant has Italian servers I think there is a good chance this extends to the kitchen, clearly not so here. The cured meats were delish, all they had to do was slice it. I ordered the Cornish game hen with broccoli rabe, at 7:30 pm they had run out of the veg (only 3 other tables were there!). When I asked for sautéed spinach I asked that it be sautéed in garlic and butter, it arrived sans garlic. The dish fell completely flat, although the meat was grilled perfectly what a shame that it lacked ANY flavor, had it been cooked with some herbs or zest or something it would have been a hit. Blah what a shame!

My girlfriend and I went for New Years Eve. It was fairly busy and we got a small table in the back. After figuring out what we were going to eat, the server gave some wine suggestions. We chose a chilled white wine and ordered our food. Realizing that our small table would be quite cramped with a bucket of ice to chill the wine and our plates, the server move us to a 4 seat table. It was really common sense, but we've been in that situation before and the server just trys to cram everything onto the small table. Great service, excellent food. I'd of preferred it a little quieter for my romantic meal for two, but it WAS New Years Eve. Great place, can't wait to go back!

Williamsburg Northside is not rich in white-tablecloth restaurants offering an authentic Italian dining experience, so we were delighted to try Il Paiolo for a dinner with old friends who are more used to heading to Manhattan for their fine dining nights out. We were not disappointed, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming nor the service more attentive. Our waiter, who spoke a variety of languages fluently, made excellent recommendations about what to order and the wine he suggested, a Piemontese Nebbiolo, was perfect. All our main courses were perfectly executed (roast chicken, steamed sea bass, pasta with monkfish sugo, roast kid), as were the appetizers. Excellent ingredients + perfect execution = success.
