Another DC Italian restaurant that's just fair...meatballs we're like golfballs and the chicken liver terrine was just fair, but too cold to really enjoy. There is a row of tables against a wall with couples stacked closely to one another...if you want privacy, don't get stuck there. Also, we were limited to the three-course restaurant week...overall disappointing, but not surprising

Osteria Elisir is an awesome place to dine. I've eaten there quite a few times, and have never been disappointed! Chef Enzo is always friendly, and the food is delizioso! The homemade cavatelli with meat sauce just melts in your mouth! Can't wait to return! Complimenti al Chef Enzo!

I had really find memories of Elisir when it first opened. The food was fabulous and the whole experience felt very special. In its current more "casual" format I just felt a lot if this was lost. The food was good but really not distinctive, and the ambience somehow just seems very flat. I'd recommend it as a comfortable nice place to meet friends or something but not for a special night out.

We had a wonderful experience at Elisir: both the plates of cheeses and cured meats were delicious and well served. We went for a light meal, but the menu offers many inviting dishes that should be tried. Soft music did not disturb our conversation, and the staff was just perfect. This restaurant was a total revelation: take advantage of Restaurant Week to give it a try. We'll certainly be back!

The decor is simple but tasteful. We went early so the noise level was very low. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The pre-meal spreads, for bread, were delicious. The pasta dishes were plentiful, with fresh ingredients and properly cooked. My roasted lamb dish was outstanding. The sea bass had a unique and pleasant taste. The deserts were excellent also. I would recommend this restaurant and plan to return when in the area.

I decided to look around for new restaurants for us to try, and located Osteria Elisir through a neighborhood restaurant search. I am so glad I did! We had a lovely meal, we ordered the eggplant spread with the bread - it was excellent. I had a wheat pasta dish, with fresh shaved truffles on top - delicious. My husband also ordered a pasta dish, it was great too. We will definitely be back!

We enjoyed an early dinner before heading to the theater. Restaurant is cozy and open to kitchen. Wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We had a fish and a pasta dish after appetizers and plenty of wine. Food was excellent and portions were plentiful. I would definitely recommend for a romantic or intimate dinner.

My girlfriend wanted to try the lasagne, which was only available "for two", so I joined her in that entree. It proved much more than we could consume and she carried home over half of it along with an order of cookies. She reports that the lasagne was as delicious the following morning, afternoon, and evening as it had been in the restaurant -- once we added some extra hot pepper flakes. I got a very tasty salami appetizer and ended with strawberry gelato and strawberry-basil sorbet, the second of which had a very intriguing flavor. With several glasses of wine and a couple shots of Irish whiskey to end the meal, the bill totaled $188 before tip. We will return, especially since the Osteria is just a block from the E Street Cinema.

So disappointed at the service. Our entrees were delivered by another, who asked if I wanted another glass of wine (yes). waited a long time. She finally brought it over, but in a warm glass, clearly just out of the washer – no way to treat a $15 Super Tuscan! I didn't get any pepper or cheese. We asked for to go bags & were very surprised that no containers were to be found and our very sauce soaked food was put into cardboard boxes in a paper bag. In a short time, the boxes started to leak. We asked if the food could be wrapped in aluminum foil. She then wrapped the leaky boxes in foil. Pretty pitiful at the prices Elisir charges to have no containers. Too many good restaurants with impeccable service to spend my time/money here.

Osteria Elisir is fantastic in every way. Everyone in our party of four was "over the moon" with their food! Salads are fresh, crisp and uniquely put together; chicken liver appetizer is divine; many delicious pasta options; delicious fish. Heavenly ice cream trio for dessert. We enjoyed a very "hip" martini as well as a glass of wine with our meal. Highly recommended. It's our new Italian favorite in Washington!

Wish I had more room to rave…it was a quiet Friday evening, the staff was very attentive, our server was quite charming in helping us make choices (too many good selections!). The olive oil/sea salt addition to the bread was intriguing. The pork tenderloin was AMAZING, albeit on the smaller side. The lamb steak was wonderful—tender, flavorful, and HUGE. The cheesecake was different, fluffy, and served warm. Too lemony for my wife but still tasty, and a nice small size for sharing after a large meal. The server had overheard me say something to my wife about our anniversary, so at the end of the meal she presented us with a "happy anniversary" card they'd made and signed by all the staff…a sweet gesture we really appreciated.

This is a lovely setting, very convenient location downtown. My group of 4 business friends was celebrating a special occasion. It was the perfect place for that. Elegant enough but not fussy. Attentive service and very quiet because not too many of the tables were occupied. Food was very good. Portions are large, especially the soups. Try the spreads for the bread. We had a great hummus (not overly garlicky), and an eggplant, also outstanding. Soups were equally great. Pasta entrees very good. The only glitch was that one order for soup was apparently overlooked. it was fixed but it did mean that one person ended up eating her soup after the rest of us had finished our appetizers which we ate before they got cold while waiting.

The restaurant was dead on a Friday night. That was the first red flag. The restaurant is decorated nicely, but I found the TV's showing plates ready to be served a bit odd. Perhaps this would be an interesting and unique addition to the dining room, but they didn't serve much purpose or provide entertainment value as plates coming from the kitchen were few and far between. The drinks were terrible. Stick with wine or straight liquor if you go. The mixed drinks contain next to no alcohol. This is a tell tale sign of a struggling restaurant. The food was mediocre at best and certainly not worth the price. I would never return.

I don't know how else to say it. Chef Enzo has created the perfect home for his cuisine once again. Went for lunch this time, and was transported to culinary heaven in the middle of the day! Order the olive oil and salt tray for your bread! I then went on to the duck ragu pasta (Garganelli) and Charred Beef Skirt steak with gorgonzola cauliflower mash. Wow! Enough to share these two with a dining guest. Then the buffalo milk ricotta cheesecake for the table. The individual cups of cheesecake were rich and accompanied with lemon curd, hazelnut cream and gelato...a sweet flavor explosion! A tray of small homemade cookies accompanied our coffee. I always walk out of here with a smile!

If you live in the Penn Quarter, Osteria Elizir with Chef Enzo Fargione at the helm, should become your favorite restaurant for the range of choices on the menu and for the extraordinary quality of preparation. Add to that impeccable service and the fact that, if you are a repeat customer, both the chef and the staff will remember you. You'll feel as if you're home. If you don't live in the neighborhood, this restaurant is worth the journey. And it's easy to get to: Just two and half blocks south of Metro Center. You'll find Italian cuisine made with a fine hand, culinary art and, if you're lucky, the chef's grandmother's meatballs that appeared on the menu last winter. The menu changes but the quality and friendly atmosphere stay.

This looked like a nice quiet Italian restaurant, but I have to say we were disappointed in the food. We both ordered the veal chop and found the chop to be very fatty and chewy. Also the dish was way too salty. We both ordered a glass of wine, and we thought for the price the restaurant was skimping on the serve. When we asked the server if this was the end of a bottle since the amount seemed to be a bit low, she replied that she checked with the bartender who said it was a "standard 5 ounce pour." That is already in the low end of an acceptable size range, and I'm not convinced it was even that much. The service was fairly prompt and very friendly, but unfortunately did not make up for the meal. Wouldn't recommend.

I was meeting the Managing Partner of our firm for lunch. He'd suggested another Italian place he'd been but I suggested we try something new. There was barely anyone in the restaurant - and we got there at noon - but we were very well taken care of by our waitresses. The zucchini appetizer was amazing, and I could eat buckets of the green olive spread! We split the watermelon salad and the tilapia for our lunch. The salad was really good, but the tilapia was a bit disappointing - thin and overcooked. Overall, however, the place was great. While they didn't have them on at lunchtime, I loved the fact that the chef has TVS in the restaurant that overlook the kitchen so you can watch food being prepared!

While on the pricier side, the menu was varied and the food was delicious. I had the soft shell crab pasta and it was delicious. The charred octopus appetizer was also very tasty (though a little on the saltier side). Waiter was great in bringing out food in a timely manner as we mentioned that we were going to the theater. Wine list also interesting and tasty- wish there was a bit more description on the menu with respect to the wines so that your waiter doesn't have to explain everything to you. But nonetheless would visit here again for good italian food!

On our second time we were pleasantly rewarded with another exceptional meal. The freshness and overall quality of the food is top notch. Most-order items include the italian sushi rolls and the Saffron Tortelli. Additionally, the constant updating of their menu items ensures you will be trying the latest culinary inspirations of the chef. The service was both extremely attentive but not in the least bit bothersome. We never had to ask for our drinks to be refilled or plates cleared. If you are a foodie and an Italian food lover this place is an ABSOLUTE must!

This was the second time I dined here. Both pastas ordered (pacchiero and tortolini) were excellent. The wine chosen ($50 range) was quite nice, worthy of the price for cost-wary diners.
