  • "I have been here about 4 times because of the lure of 1000 OT Points. I find the ambiance is what it is... The service is normally adequate and the food has thoughts of excitement however is a bit of a let-down to the palate. We had: Meat Balls very tasty; Stuffed Squash Blossoms which were bland except for the fry oil; Pizza which was half-cooked and soaked in the juice of the Mozzarella; Flank steak in a NOT so provocative presentation but tender & tasty; Bolognese which was bland and looked as if they used ground beef; Papardelle with Chicken breast diced into tiny pieces and flavor was also bland. Osteria always excites me when I read their Menu, however I feel their dishes definitely don't carry the description to the palate."

  • "We made reservations for a birthday dinner for a colleague. There were 5 of us in total. We had the following -- -Pork Sausage, speck, Crimini Mushrooms pizza (delicious! my favorite pizza here so far!) -White Corn pizza (okay/good. i was not impressed by this pizza but it's still good.) -Bacon, Marble Pototoes, Westcome Cheddar pizza (delicious! had this for brunch before and it's great.) -Tagliatelle Bolognese (delicous! i've ordered this before and it's always good.) -Conchiglioni (first time ordering this dish and I enjoyed it!) -We ordered a dessert which was new that I haven't tried before. I believe it started with the letter "Z". It was a little strange. Had a weird colored sauce on it that did not look appealing! Choc cake is good!"

  • "I've eaten here several times. I love the food, the the service has always been painfully slow. This most recent time, the service was slow and my entree came 3 min after my salad came. I literally had to HOLD my salad plate while I ate it and wait to give it to a server before I could eat my entree! The staff has always been very nice, but they are not trained to think about the customer needs."

  • "Yet another disappointing experience in the bay area. We were one of only 4-5 tables seated in the restaurant. The waitress was not helpful, not attentive, condescending, and just this side of rude. The food was ok. I ordered squash blossoms and got 4 barely bite sized, greasy "blossoms". The chicken was dry but i could eat it. My wife thought the food was, well, ok at best and the service was aweful. She will not go back based on service alone. For two appetizers that were more the size of a canape or an amuse bouche, and entrees barely large enough to call an entree with tax and tip it ran us $85. I'm not above paying well for good food and service. This was neither. I will not return."

  • "Order wine or beer here. We ordered pre-dinner cocktails, ones not on the menu (old-fashioneds....not some obscure thing) and they were highly watered down, flavorless. However, the server was really awesome about it. She was great. We didn't make a fuss, and just orerderd beer. The food was excellent. Very good pizza, and pappardelle cooked perfectly.I think to make up for the bad cocktail, they comped us 2 moscatos after dinner. Very nice. The only other thing was, we had great table by the window, but for some reason there was a a small table right behind us with a sliverware tray on it, and servers kept coming up to replenish tables. It was super distracting. However, we will be back for the food. And wine and beer. :-)"

  • "Lunch at Osteria never disappoints; the food is fresh, original and very delicious. It is always a treat to go there and I enjoy celebrating my birthday there. Most of the dishes are unique to their chef and ones I have not enjoyed elsewhere...which is one of the reasons I like it so much."

  • "We had a very good dining experience...the ever changing menu reflects seasonal items (salmon tartare) as well as inventive items from the chef (ravioli with a soft ricotta cheese)...the only minus...I ordered a margarita using the "well" tequila...it was C- at best...we sat at the bar and the service was very good...attentive without being intrusive..."

  • "When a customer asks for something like minced garlic, the server shouldn't say "i doubt it" it was a small indicator on how the service was going to be. Not only was the server not aware what was on the menu she never tasted it so she couldn't tell us what the herb tasted like. We got more service from the guy serving water. She disappeared for 20 plus minutes. it took too long between the antipasto and dinner, we were going to get the manager, then our food came out."

  • "Let's face it, there just aren't that many great choices in San Mateo. Osteria Coppa was a staple but the service has definitely fallen off the mark. We went to the bar while we waited for our table to be ready, and it took several minutes for the server to put dinner menus in front of us. Dinner menus that do not contain any drink options. Getting her attention to get cocktail menus was the next challenge, and it was not even busy. Our drinks took forever (and was there any alcohol in them?), which we ended up taking to the table without having a sip. Lame. Dinner service not much better - had to ask for wine, for parm (hello, it's an Italian restaurant), etc. The food was good, but the service was a meal ruiner."

  • "The service from our waitress and manager was impeccable throughout the night. As my steak entree was overcooked, they brought another as well as comped the meal as it didn't turn out the second time. They also served an appetizer while the wait was long and made sure we were satisified. Our waitress was very attentive and intuitive. We all had a great meal ending with the special birthday dessert for our daughter. I would highly recommend this restaurant and we would return again."

  • "This restaurant is a local favorite of ours. We love the food, service and ambiance. We had reservations for Sunday night and had requested a booth. We got there about 5 minutes before our reservation time, and were very disappointed to see another party who did not have reservations, seated in the very last available booth as we looked on. When we immediately alerted the hostess about the error, she was extremely dismissive so we asked for the manager. We were so very impressed with the manner in which he handled the situation. He acknowledged the error, apologized, re-seated the other party, and declined our offer to send something to their table, saying he had already taken care of it for them. Kudos also to the other patrons!"

  • "First irritation was the waitress. When asked which pasta entree she most recommended, her annoying response was, "Well, they are all good." Not very helpful. The food was just average. Nothing awful, but nothing whatsoever memorable. The restaurant was not full, so it was not too loud nor frenetic, so atmosphere was OK, but again nothing distinctive nor memorable. All in all, just average."

  • "We went on a Saturday night and didn't know about the valet ($9 - and worth it) parking and drove around for 35 minutes before calling and being told about the valet. That was our start - from there it took forever to get first, a drink, then an appetizer, then an entree - each time the wait was way too long. We gave up having a dessert. BUT, the food is wonderful, fresh and inventive for a typical Italian restaurant. I'd go again, but on a week night with fingers crossed. "

  • "I've worked in and run some great restaurants in Scotland and Europe, and so I can speak (I think) with some experience. Honestly, I was expecting more from the restaurant: the ambience was OK, not great. The greeting and table attendance was good and the person waiting on the table was very polite (not too chatty) and attentive. For a menu passing itself as a real northern italian restaurant, there was too much pizza. Not only does that change the ambience, but pizza is not served that much in northern Italy compared to southern Italy. I ordered the Oso Buco - it was well presented and the plate surround was clean and you could not see wipe marks (another good sign), but it was small. For the $140.00 range I expected more..."

  • "Went to Osteria Coppa for the first time after hearing some good reviews and we were very disappointed. We got three different entrees and all three were just ok. The service was less than stellar. Our waiter first told us he would explain the specials but then just pointed to the board and told us they were listed there. My husband and I both got a drink before dinner and were going to order a glass of wine with dinner; however, the food was placed on the table by someone other than our waiter and the server walked away before we could order wine. So we did without the wine and the restaurant missed out on the additional revenue. We have no desire to return to this restaurant."

  • "It was difficult to find a pasta dish without cream in it. Since I don't care for cream in my food, I ended up with Tajarin (I didn't know Italians used "j" in their alphabet) - with a red sauce that included the trend du jour: bone marrow. The unusually wide pasta noodles were good. The sauce was good. i'm not a big fan of bone marrow so i tried to leave it behind. The kale caesar salad was really good, too. My glass of red wine was just right for the food. The service was friendly enough, although the waiter didn't offer much information other than his name unless specifically asked. The outdoor table we opted for was too small for the 4 of us. I'll try Osteria Coppa again if they change the menu to one with lighter food preparations."

  • "Went for an early dinner, sat in the back patio this time. It's hard for a restaurant to make the best of what is basically an eating area that borders an alley but they do a pretty decent job making you forget about the nearby cars and trashcans. What might be better is having some very quiet music playing to distract from the parking lot noise. The food was very good as usual. I had the Tajarin (tah-ha-reen, had to ask) pasta with smoked trout. Delicious! Also ordered the fritto misto as a starter. You can pass on this unless you want a large mound of fried calamari and lemon slices with most pieces the size of your distal phalanges. Try the kale caesar instead."

  • "The restaurant is definitely popular with the locals. The customers were packed in pretty tightly but nobody seemed to notice or care. Parking was a nightmare and it took me over 20 minutes to finally wrangle a spot. The food was pretty tasty but we found the menu very limited. The entrée my son chose (chicken) was dark meat on the bone and had very little else on the plate except for some kale or other dark vegetable. My pizza was good although there were puddles of oil on top of it, along with cheese that slid off the crust when I tried to eat it. The prices were pretty high for the amount of food that we were served. I compare it to a similar type restaurant where I live, and there was no comparison. $7 for a bottle of water? Really?"

  • "My husband and I always enjoy dining here. We enjoyed the special soft shell crab appetizer and arancini. We had two pasta dishes, a baked rigatoni and a fettuccine pasta with mushroom and ramps. The rigatoni was very good, but the fettuccine was overcooked and a little soupy. It might have been an off night. The service was good and we enjoyed the wine recommended by our server. We will return because we enjoy their ever changing menu. "

  • "I have tried Coppa a 1/2 dozen times and it is very hit & miss. The Chef wants to create a menu of 'unique' interest, however the himself & his staff do not have the ability to pull it off. The specials are not fused with a mature finish which will leave you disappointed. The Pizzas have become bland and a few years ago they were bursting with topping flavors! We dined outside because it was a very warm night and the trains were a little bit much! Our server was receptive however busy with other duties inside since I think she was an Assistant Manager. The Busboys took care of our needs. I believe the only Gastronomical 'find' in San Mateo has NOW closed... those continuing should K.I.S. and they will cater to the mass and stay open! "

  • "Had great hopes that restaurant would live up to the expectations provided by website of being voted Best Italian restaurant in the bay area. The service was not good as it appeared that waitress was a new hire and was being shadowed by supervisor. Waitress was slow in getting our initial orders and refill on drinks was even slower. The food wasn't anything special that made it stand out which was a huge disappointment (ordered the fried calimari and chicken dinner). I am usually lenient when it comes to reviews but I would definitely not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends."
