We went here for my mom's birthday dinner on Saturday night. We arrived and after the waitress took our drink orders, she informed us that the kitchen was backed up and our food would take at least 30 minutes to prepare (no matter what we order). I understand that, however, it would have been nice if we could have gotten something free or discounted for the wait. She brought us multiple drinks but we still had to pay for all of them. As someone who has a dairy protein allergy, I was also upset that the menu in the restaurant did not match the menu on the restaurant's website, since I had already picked out what I could eat. Luckily, the waitress was very helpful in finding something I could eat. My chicken was fine and my mom loved the mussels and the rigatoni. My dad ordered the halibut and he said it was overcooked and that one of the potatoes he received was bruised and inedible. Our drinks were great (I had a lemon drop and my mom had a margarita). The bread was okay. The desserts were delicious (lemon sorbet = exquisite).

  • Off night

I've been here a lot but Monday must have been an off night. The service was slower than usual and our server seemed a little checked out, didn't give suggestions on the wine list or tell us about the specials until we asked. Took our order and ran away for 20 minutes then came back and said they gave our pizza to another table. The manager did come out immediately and comped appropriately, apologized etc. So that was good. But overall it seemed like an odd night and experience. We left laughing b/c we weren't sure if we were being punked the whole night!

I love Osteria Coppa but this time the menu just seemed rather lame. The pastas were uninspiring and the quality was not what I expect. I had the pumpkin fettucinne and the sauce was just watery and bleh. Too bad. Hope they pick it back up!

I've never been to this restaurant. The food was fine but nothing to write home to mom about. Basic Italian fare. The wines we had were tasty. Not sure if I will have to rush back but would go if someone wanted a place to eat in the area.

We've dined here maybe three or four times. Its always been very good. The specials have been unique such as stuffed zucchini blossoms (comparable to some we had in Nice) or pasta with black or white truffles or a duck confit salad with pomegranate and persimmons. Pastas--good! and I know pasta, having lived in italy for 12 years.

this is one of our regular spots in San Mateo to stop for a bite. Most recently we brought friends there who had never been but heard nothing but good things about the food from many. On this particular evening we booked a table (we usually sit at the bar -- just the two of us). The service wasn't the best; the wait person seemed off. Not only was my husband and friends first choice not available they had been provided incorrect menus so that had to be straightened out. Then my friends husband 2nd choice wasn't available. It all worked out and we had a nice dinner. I'm not sure our friends will come back as this was their first experience where in our case we know how could the service and the food can be.

We made a 9pm reservation so we could give out candy beforehand. Coming in late provides a much more relaxed atmosphere, much quieter and the servers are not as rushed. Food did not disappoint, as always. The only "oops" I had was ordering the broccoli (which I love!) to accompany my pumpkin pasta with black truffles and English peas. The broccoli seasonings were too strong a dish beside the delicate flavors of the pasta and truffle, so we boxed it up and enjoyed it the next day. Also ordered was the pork chop which was prepared perfectly. Dessert of the salted caramel gelato finished off a lovely evening.

I've had dinner here a couple times over the past 2 years. Each time was a pleasant experience with inside service. This reservation was made for Sunday brunch with family and co-workers. The outdoor seating area is too close to Caltrain. It is really difficult to have a comfortable conversation with the passing trains every 30minutes. The service was very disappointing. We had a long 25 minute wait for our food and not all of the entrees were delivered at the same time. We had to wait 5 minutes until the last dish was delivered, letting everyone else's food get cold. The ravioli had very little flavor. Lastly, the bus boy cleared plates away without asking first.

We have been several times...and almost always we have had a great experience...not this time, the entrees were poorly prepared and the menu was ordinary...possibly a change in the kitchen or just trying to reduce the cost of the food being served...it needs new "eyes" and some imagination...otherwise, it will become a casual pixie place and not much more...

I've dined at O. Coppa quite a few times. I like the place. This visit brought to light two issues I hadn't experienced before. - Food and wine specials with no prices mentioned. I'm skeptical when the waiter or management are too embarrassed to let diners know the prices of food & wine specials. My reaction - I never order a special without knowing the price. - Veggie options. I brought two strict vegetarians with me. A surprise that the chef uses only cheese made with animal rennet. Non-animal rennet cheese is readily available. I can't tell the difference between the two versions of mozzarella. Result - O. Coppa is out for dining w/ veggie friends.

Appreciated being seated even though last person was running late. Ordered an extra appetizer, which we would not have otherwise done. Three out of four dishes were excellent. One dish we didn't like was removed from the bill. (Pasta w/orange mushrooms? Not mine!) Really liked the flat pasta with pork and beef sauce. Would have it again! Dishes came out quickly from the kitchen. Wines by the glass were limited. The only Cabernet was $19.00. I didn't want to spend that much. Server recommended another red, which I enjoyed, for $14. Noise level was a bit too robust. Bar was busy. Service was prompt and professional, although server's attitude was lukewarm. Figured she was tired.

Osteria Coppa is a nice solid restaurant that's in the neighborhood - if you want good pizza, pasta and a delicious salumi or cheese plate-this is your place. I will say that the truffle pasta was delicious, but the porcini mushroom pasta was sort of a miss. Perhaps the mushrooms were left in the wine reduction too long? Not sure, it was still okay, we ate every bit, but it was the disappointment of the evening b/c everything else was delicious- including the duck confit salad. Great for a relaxed girls night out.

As seems to be the pattern at Osteria Coppa, food was excellent, service was not. Service: we arrived for our reservation promptly at 7pm. The room was busy, but no more than 2/3 full. The hostess said they were waiting for the people at our table to pay their bill. When my wife asked if we could sit at one of the many empty tables, the hostess looked surprised, but agreed to seat us. She may have known that the table where she seated us was next to a larger party, and might impact our service, but she didn't mention it. We then waited 10 min for acknowledgement by our server, and the long waits continued through the meal. The good news is the food was, as usual, very good. We have had this experience before, so no surprise. Be prepared.

We have eaten here several times and have always rated it highly. Tonight was an exception, our server appeared to be new. He was unfamiliar with the wine list, and suggested that I read the descriptions. He also did not feel comfortable describing the specials. He did, however, offer to have the manager help us with the wine, who saved our evening. His description of wines, appetizers, and entrees were extremely helpful. We enjoyed the appetizers of burrata, early girl, tomatoes, and basil, and the oven roasted calamari. The calamari was tasty and tender. My husband had the special tortilloni with burrata, and I enjoyed the scialetelli with eggplant. We shared the salted caramel gelato and the bottle of wine!

House-Cured salumi and barrata with pearl tomatoes was outstanding. Tomatoes tasted like they were just picked which went well with the soft barrata. The olive oil poached halibut on a bed of potato puree, with fresh corn, wax beans and basil pesto. The flavors were perfect together and the beans cooked just right. The Tagliatelle Bolognese, ragu was beef and pork. So good together. Ania brought us each a glass of moscato. We normally don't like moscato because it is too sweet but this was lightly sweet with slight effervescence. "Delish". Finally a scoop of dark chocolate with dark chocolate chips and salted caramel gelato. Really nice finish to our meal. Ania was familiar with the menu and made an excellent wine recommendation.

Osteria Coppa is my favorite San Mateo downtown restaurant. we proudly took a party of 6 there Sunday night for another great experience and the newcomers probably will not return because, although we were seated outside where it WAS quiet so we could visit, the server ignored us for over 15 minutes and one of our guests had to talk to the hostess to get service. Also, one of the same couple's orders was incorrect. Once the correct food came, everyone agreed it was delicious but the experience was definitely not what I had expected.

You would think the service should be good. Boy was I wrong! The waitress were not very nice to us and seemed unhappy for the most of the time. They also charged us $3 per person for the cake fee. I used to frequently enjoy Osteria Coppa, but hadn't been for about six months. After my recent lunch visit, I won't be back. Nearly everything was way over-salted (all in my group noted that). Unlike in the past, nothing really stood out, other than the loud and annoying 80's rock music. Most of the dishes we ordered sounded great and had potential but were poorly executed. Service was right out of the Denny's playbook.

Although she had shellfish allergies and a few specific needs the waitstaff and team made efforts to accomdoate.
